[TUT] How to fix a softbricked/bootlooped phone? (General) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is a tutorial for those who are new to android OS and rooted their phones early out of excitement (most of you might have done that ) of getting to flash new ROM's, kernels and blah.... There might be a few terminologies you don't understand. If that is the case please refer to the all time android dictionary by Diablo67: Android terms, slangs and definitions
I posted the tutorial on my blog too, but I think it will be much appreciated if I post it here too:
If your phone keeps rebooting
If you've flashed a ROM and your phone won't boot into the home screen, it's probably because you forgot to wipe your data and/or cache. It's trying to boot into the ROM, but some leftover data from your last ROM is causing it to error out, and it'll reboot itself over and over again. If your phone's eating a big bowl of boot loops, your first course of action should be to wipe its data and cache, which you can do from recovery mode. This method assumes you're using ClockworkMod Recovery, like the majority of Android users, but if your particular phone uses a different third-party recovery (like AmonRA), you should still be able to find these options in the interface. They might just be in a different place. To wipe your data and cache:
1.Power down your phone. Turn it back on and boot into Recovery mode. This is a bit different for every phone, so you'll have to Google how to do it for your specific model. Usually it involves holding down another button, like Volume Down, as you turn your phone on. HTC phones will have to then select "Recovery" from a menu, while other phones will boot directly into ClockworkMod. You'll know you're in ClockworkMod by the words "ClockworkMod Recovery" at the top of the screen.
2.Use your volume keys to navigate the menus, and your power button to select menu items. Scroll down to Advanced, and choose "Wipe Dalvik Cache". When that's finished, go back to the main screen and choose "Wipe Cache Partition". Lastly, head to "Wipe Data/Factory Reset". This will delete all your settings and apps, but you should still be using the correct ROM.
3.Reboot your phone.
If Your Phone Boots Straight Into Recovery: Flash a New ROM
If, when you boot up your phone, it goes straight into ClockworkMod, then there's likely an issue with the ROM you flashed. Note that some ROMs boot into recovery mode automatically after flashing, so reboot your phone once from recovery mode to make sure you're having a problem. HTC users: if you boot up your phone, it might go straight into the bootloader—check to see whether you can choose "Recovery" from the list before continuing to the next step. HTC phones usually don't boot straight into recovery.
In this case, you'll want to reflash the ROM from scratch. Try again with the ROM that messed up your phone, if you so choose, but if that doesn't work, try an entirely different ROM. The best way to do this is to download a ROM from somewhere on the net and putting it on your SD card. You'll need to take the SD card out of your phone, and you'll need an SD card reader that you can plug into your computer. Here's how it works:
Plug the SD card into your computer. Drag the ROM's ZIP file to your SD card, and wait for it to copy.
When it's done copying, eject the SD card and put it back in your phone. Reboot into Recovery mode.
Use your volume keys to navigate the menus, and your power button to select menu items. Scroll down to "Install ZIP From SD Card" and navigate to the ZIP file you just copied over. Give it time to flash the ROM.
When it's done, reboot your phone.
Hopefully, your phone should successfully boot into the new ROM. From there, you can probably assume that the previous ROM that messed up your phone isn't going to work, and you'll have to find another ROM for now—or find another copy of that ROM that isn't corrupted. Remember to make backups of your working ROMs so you don't lose all your data!

[HOW TO] Install EB01 ROM with SlicedFlav or Stock

Excited to give you guys a walk through again. I have included my hybrid flavor of the EB01 stock ROM. I have kept TouchWiz on there but removed all bloat ware and dibinged the phone. I have also included the Gingerbread keyboard apk (separate install, I just love this keyboard.).
Don’t worry, I have a link for the stock too.
First this will assume that you are on the DL30 leak. This is for the Fascinate and no other phone. I am not responsible for your doing. This is what worked for me.
If you are not up to the standard above click here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11177786#post11177786
**********************************************************************
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU DOING. THIS WILL VOID THE WARRANTY OF YOUR PHONE.
THIS IS JUST THE STEPS I DID TO GET MY PHONE TO EB01 FROYO.
***********************************************************************
You will need the following items:
Samsung Drivers
Odin 1.3
eb01modem.tar
update.zip
cwm_froyo.zip
eb01_SlicedFlav_pub.zip
OR
eb01_stock.zip
Now follow the below steps
1.] Download and install the Samsung Drivers
2.] Connect your phone to your computer and copy over the update.zip, cwm_froyo.zip, eb01_SlicedFlav_pub.zip (or) eb01_stock.zip to the “ROOT” of your SDCARD.
3.] After you download Odin and eb01modem.tar put them in the same folder.
4.] Disconnect your phone from the PC, power off, and pull your battery out. (It’s the easiest way)
5.] Plug in your phone while holding the volume down and turn the phone on. You will see a yellow triangle
***************************************************************************************
THIS IS IMPORTANT > DO NOT TOUCH ANY SETTINGS IN ODIN, ONLY USE THE PDA BUTTON AND THE START BUTTON.
IF YOU TOUCH ANY OTHER BUTTONS IN ODIN YOU COULD BRICK YOUR PHONE.
***************************************************************************************
6.] Launch Odin as administrator in Vista and 7.
7.] Select the PDA button. AND ONLY THE PDA BUTTON, YOU CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE.
8.] Select the “eb01modem.tar” file.
9.] Click on “Start”.
10.] You phone will shut off, give it a min or so and it will boot back into download mode.
11.] Unplug your phone, put your battery back in, and boot into recovery mode by holding volume up and down while pressing the power button. Let go of the power button when you see “Samsung”.
12.] Scroll using your volume up and down keys. Highlight "apply sdcard:update.zip” and use your “Home” key to select.
13] Now you want to “wipe cache” twice for good measure. Highlight “wipe cache” and use your power button to select now. Scroll down and select “Yes” both times.
14.] Now you will want to “wipe data/factory reset” twice. Highlight “wipe data/factory reset” select it, and then select “Yes”.
15.] Now you will want to select “install zip from sdcard” then select “choose zip from sdcard”.
16.] Scroll down and select “cwm_froyo.zip” and confirm it. The screen will go wonky for a second.
17.] Select “choose zip from sdcard” again.
18.] Scroll down and select “eb01_SlicedFlav_pub.zip” or “eb01_stock.zip” confirm your selection.
19.] Let it do its thing and boot up.
You now have the way SlicedDrip feels the Fascinate should be and the way Verzion thinks it should be.
Have fun.
If you want the Gingerbread keyboard, download it HERE, move to your phone, use your favorite file manager, browse, and install.
The following only applies to the SlicedFlav install:
ITEMS REMOVED:
All VZW apps
Blockbuster
Media Hub
All Share
Samsung Keyboard
My Files
Write and Go
All Demo Gams
Nuance
Buddies Now
City ID
Skype
Kindle
Most live wallpapers, kept default, when I removed it would give me errors on first start up.
Visual Voicemail
THINGS STAYED / SAME:
TouchWiz
Debinged Browser
Third party sync application
Swype

AH!!! I was looking for a stock eb01 but superclean with TOUCHJIZZ!!!! (without bloatware, frankly, it's the best laucher)
The other roms have time lag so I'll give this a try. If it still does.... then...... I still love you for giving me touchwiz. (this is the only reason I like touchwiz: The message icon bar on wallpaper has little numberings for message counts.)

[Noob Guide] How to recover from a brick

First off, I would like to say that I've been rockin Android since Donut. So I wouldn't necessarily say that I'm a noob, but I'm definitely not an advanced user. I have rooted and unlocked a couple phones but this is my first tablet. My goal for this post is to come up with a noob friendly guide on how to unbrick the Asus Transformer Prime.
Disclaimer: Proceed at your own risk. I am only responsible for what I do, not what you do. This is just documentation of what I have done.
I rooted my Prime using Debugfs automated root. Then I unlocked it using the Asus Device Unlock App. I used ClockworkMod Recovery (came with the root) to flash various Jelly Bean roms (for some reason, I couldn't do it from Rom Manager so I had to boot it into recovery manually). Because of all of the button pushes and holds, I decided to install Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). My Prime started acting strangely so I switched back to ClockworkMod. It was all down hill from there :crying:.
Ultimately, when booting up normally I get stuck on the start up screen.

If I plug in to by computer via USB, Windows will recognize it. You can check in the Device Manager (on Windows XP Start --> Control Panel --> Switch Classic View if in Category view --> System --> Hardware --> Device Manager). Note: I am using the Naked Universal Driver.
Tip: If you hold the power/vol up buttons for about 10 secs it will show a black screen, vibrate, and then shut down (when it is not plugged into computer). When plugged in it will reboot back to start up screen, however, after it vibrates, if you let got of the power/vol up and then hold the vol down button it will reboot to "RCK" screen (just hold the power/vol down buttons to power on, then after vibrate, hold vol down button until you see the "RCK" screen, if starting from a shut down). Just let go of all buttons to go into fast boot selection. Remember, you have 10 secs to make a selection
Now here is a noob area for me. I don't believe I have ever worked in fastboot (if I did it was only once when I rooted my MyTouch 4G...did it the long way with detailed instructions). Once my Prime says "Starting fastboot USB download protocol" that is the end of the journey (for now ).
In all the forums, topics, and posts I've read with similar fastboot issues, they stated it was fixed by installing/reinstalling the drivers. Been there, done that, didn't work for me. It is being recognized in Windows.
Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is another noob area for me. Fortunately I had it on my computer already from the time that I previously rooted my phone so I just updated it. Like I said before, I used it probably only once before so when I read about using ADB, the light bulb is not lit . I know it is included in the Android SDK in the platform tools but other than that... .
Tip: I have a janky computer--got to upgrade soon--so here is a short cut to get to the appropriate path in the Windows Command Prompt. Setting up the short cut is easy but initially adds on a few secs to the process but is so worth it to me. From Windows XP, Start --> My Computer --> Tools --> Folder Options --> File Types --> select Folder, then Advanced --> New --> Action=Open in Command Prompt, Application=cmd.exe, then ok all the way back my computer. Navigate to android-sdk --> platform-tools --> right click on any folder and select Open in Command Prompt.
When I try to see if my device is recognized in ADB by entering ADB devices, it's a no go .
Update: I found a great guide on ADB/Fastboot. I learned that I can't use adb commands in fastboot. I'm tinkering with fastboot and will probably come out with a noob guide a little later...and here it is.
I can boot into Recovery just fine. Tip: Just as I had to do when it was stuck on the start up screen, I have to shut it down with the power/vol up buttons. To boot into recovery, hold power/vol down until you see the "RCK" screen. As soon as you do, let go and immediately hold the volume up button. Technically you have 5 secs.
Unfortunately, I think I wiped everything but the recovery from my Prime. When I try to: install zip from sdcard --> choose zip from sdcard --> clockworkmod/ --> it says no files found. So I downloaded Euroskank on my computer. You can download any ROM you want. It's just a matter of preference. List of ROMs and Kernels
I can see my device in Windows.
And this time I can see it in ADB .
For the sake of simplicity, I cut and pasted the downloaded ROM into C:\ (less to type and less likely to mistype). I also renamed it update. In the command prompt, I pushed the zip by entering adb push C:\update.zip /sdcard/ and gave it a few minutes to do it's thing.
In CWM Recovery, install zip from sdcard --> apply /sdcard/update.zip --> yes - Install /sdcard/update.zip
Once it's completed, reboot and Wah lah!
I hope that I have helped the noobies in a clear and concise manner. Just a word of advice moving forward...before asking a question in the XDA forums, please google it to see if there is an answer. Can you imagine hundreds of thousands of people asking you the same question even after you stepped up to the mic on live TV and gave the answer out? I imagine that's how these "know-it-all" feels :silly:. They can be a little testy, give you a tongue lashing, and then send you on your way. A lot of noobies are intimitated. If we all start documenting our own personal problems and solutions, as I have, then maybe we will get more noob guides.
BTW, I'm not a know-it-all so if you have a question feel free to ask. Just be clear and concise about what the problem is so I don't have to answer a question with a question...Just the answer to the question. If you are greatful for this noob guide, hit Thanks! :good:

[Q] Help installing Newts Incredible HD ROM

I see that everyone is recommending using 4ext to install this ROM. In the past I have used CWM and an unfamiliar on the steps to take to install this ROM. Could someone please help on the steps necessary to install this ROM, its phone crash fix, and new radios?
Setting up 4eXT:
You can install it by going to settings > apps and checking unknown sources, then scanning this QR code with the barcode scanner app to download the 4ext recovery updater app.

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Once it's downloaded tap the notification and tap install.
Then tap open.
Set up the app by tapping accept, then ok twice, then tap "online install | upgrade", then tap allow on the superuser popup, then tap ok, then check "Do not ask again", then tap yes, then wait, then tap ok until the popups are gone, then tap yes on the "is this your device" if it says thunderbolt, then tap "4EXT Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5 RC5", then tap ok, then tap install. Once it finishes installing tap ok then tap yes.
Installing the ROM:
From the main menu of 4eXT recovery updater, tap "Power menu" then tap ok. Then make sure reboot into recovery is selected and tap "Do it!".
Once in recovery, tap "backup | restore" and then tap backup and then the check mark.
Once it's done backing up hit the back button until you're at the main menu.
Then tap "wipe | format" then tap "format all partitions (except sdcard)"
Once it's done formatting hit back and do the format two more times.
Then go to the main menu and tap "install from sdcard" then "choose zip from sdcard"
Then scroll down until you see the ROM name then tap it, then tap the check mark.
Once it's done installing, tap the check mark then go back to the main menu then tap "reboot now" and tap the check mark.
I followed those instructions and was able to install the ROM. However, I am still having issues making calls. After the reboot, I let the phone sit for a while then did the initial settings. I let the phone sit again and then tried to make a call. I got the error "unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped." I then rebooted into recovery cleared both caches twice and flashed the phone crash zip. I then rebooted the phone and waited a while. I tried to make a call and still get the same error. Any ideas?
Make sure when u format in recovery you do it in ext3 format. All current tb ics leak based ROMs are structured that way, because no one can customize the kernel until it's released by HTC/VZW. If u have ext4 formatting, you will have issues. To check which one you got, in recovery select "info". It will list all partitions and their base format.
If any are ext4 (probably is), wipe everything again. Then go to "tools" and choose format in ext3. Reformat everything into ext3. Then reflash the ROM as listed above.

Click to collapse
I tired that method last and I still had issues. I really like 4ext better than CWM. Sounds like there might be a ROM update later this week. I think I will wait for that to try again.

THIS GUIDE ASSUMES YOU KNOW HOW TO USE ADB AND FASTBOOT (ENABLE USB DEBUGGING)OR AT LEAST KNOW WHAT THEY ARE AND DON'T SUFFER FROM GOOGLEPHOBIA
#1 Making a backup of this crap software when ADB , FASTBOOT and SP flash tool are working correctly is pointless (IMHO) (inm
Here's Everything you should need:
Stock ROM COURTESY...THIS DUMBASS https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9DmzLnUt5tuaUtJS1FHcjNyX1U/view?usp=sharing
ADB_&_FASTBOOT_executables, no need to install, just extract the .zip to the directory of your choice and execute openCMD.bat with a right click + run as administrator. it will open a terminal window, you can run all your ADVB & FASTBOOT commands from there:https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9DmzLnUt5tuM29vOTNHNEZya2s/view?usp=sharing
Driver installer & MTK_SP_FLASH_TOOL for MT8127 use this to install the drivers and flash the stock rom + custom recovery.img https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9DmzLnUt5tudVlrSEtzSE1tWHc/view?usp=sharing

STEP 1: INSTALL THE DRIVERS INSIDE THE MT8127 SP_FLASH_TOOL.zip" file you downloaded It will install the mtk usb vCOM driver we need for the mtk8127. if u have questions PM vampirefo. after that, turn your tablet upside down, FIND THE reset hole and jam the nearest tiny object in there until the screen does something different (like go black) release the reset button, hold VOLUME DOWN and plug in the USB cord and the tablet should be reconized as a preloader USB VCOM Port device under "Ports" in Device Manager

So, the necessary driver to save this POS is at hand. after it's done installing the tablet will probably reboot and the remaining drivers will install. (EVEN WITHOUT THE OTHER DRIVER YOU CAN ROOT AND FLASH NOW)
Fire up the MT8127 SP flash tool (run as administrator) you downloaded and you should see this:
Click "Scatter-Loading" and select the scatter file located in the stock rom folder you downloaded and unzipped (you DID unzip it right?) and click the "RECOVERY" FIELD LOCATED HERE:
and select the recovery image you downloaded called "UBIFSRecovery4SuperSu.img......yay, you should be all set up and ready to go!
Make sure youve already unplugged the USB cable AND hit the reset button. HIT THE DOWNLOAD BUTTON (the program is now waiting for your device...no rush) HOLD VOLUME DOWN AND PLUG IN THE USB CABLE, the computer will detect the device, the program will proceed to shove a bunch of ones and zeros down the the tablets throat and it will reboot (hopefully to a mediatek logo).
If so, youre not as stupid as everyone says when u leave the room
Toss "UPDATE-SuperSU-2.46.zip" on a microSD, Power off the device, shove the SD in his home and hold POWER + VOLUME UP until you get prompted to select either RECOVERY OR FASTBOOT, we want recovery so make sure it's selected and press VOLUME DOWN to boot into recovery & install your SuperSU.zip and reboot
once the OS is fully running, run TWRP.exe as ADMINISTRATOR in AUTO mode, TWRP recovery should be installed and u should still have root, if not, you'll need to go into advanced, then mount system before re-installing from zip.
NOW learn ADB and fastboot so I can save my breath next time:
PS, all your GAPPS are gone....quit *****ing, I've got em here: htpa_gapps-modular-micro-4.4.2-20140608-signed.zip(pa_gapps-modular-micro-4.4.2-20140608-signed.zip 85.3MB) & HERE: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9DmzLnUt5tuSl9lME9VZnFJTU0/view?usp=sharing(pa_gapps-stock-4.4.2-20140608-signed.zip 267MB))
I have requested this thread be removed, you are using my stuff without permission, and even crediting yourself with the firmware, I took the time to download, you yourself have done nothing but take others work including mine without permission.

Droid Razr XT910 bricked ???

Hi guys,
my phone was of course rooted and runing Jelly Been (do not look at my signature).
I tried to flash last CM nightbuild on my phone puting the file directly from my PC into my micro Sd card (through an sd adaptator) and replug then the micro SD to my phone: OK
I entered into the safetrap and could select the file to run. But an error occured. I could not go back to the OS I was using.
I tried to select other options but nothing worked.
I also arrived to the green robot with exclamation point.
Then of course the battery was out.
Even by pluging it to the electricity it doesn't load battery but I can access to the boot menu (I guess) by pushing together power +vol up +down.

apply update from external storage (I can see all file on my SD. I tried also to put 9.8.2O-124_SPUEM-14_S7_USASPDRICS01RTFE1007.0R_USASPDRJBRTFR_P013_A014_p2b_S1FF_fb_CFC.zip in it and flash but it doesn't work. always stuck at the red motorola logo)
apply update from ADB (do not know what is it ?)
wipe data/factory reset (I did it to try but maybe I worsten my case)
wipe cache partition ((I did it to try but maybe I worsten my case)
Can anybody tell me what to do using the right option ?
I imagine that I could load a file into my micro SD and then through recovery install it and start again properly my Droid ?
I made a back up of my data previously so I can lose data on my phone. And anyway it is still on my SD.
Waiting for your kind help to reanimate the beast.

Can anybody tell me what to do using the right option ?
I imagine that I could load a file into my micro SD and then through recovery install it and start again properly my Droid ?
I made a back up of my data previously so I can lose data on my phone. And anyway it is still on my SD.
Waiting for your kind help to reanimate the beast.

you wrote a lot but most of it is wrong, or irrelevant.
I dont think the firmware you posted, is an update. zip but must be flashed with a program like rsd lite.
firmware for the xt910 should be for the same carrier and region that was installed or it may not work correctly.
