[Q] NFC issue with Tec Tiles... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I purchased an iOttie car mount for the Note 2 (pretty awesome I might add) and decided to stick a Tec Tile to it (directly under the NFC antenna) so that when I place the phone in the mount, a series of things occur...Media volume 15, Ringer volume 7, CarHome Ultra launch, and Disable Wifi. I programmed the Tec Tile using NFC Task Launcher.
Everything seems to work just fine on the initial read, but after some time (it varies and doesn't seem to hold a pattern), the NFC tag will re-read and start everything over (the screen is on the whole time, btw). Then it will do it again, and again at various times. I can't figure out why it keeps re-reading the tag over and over again at various times.
Additional info:
4.1.1 stock rooted via exploit
Multi-window mod
Brightness nod
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jamie

I don't think you will have much luck placing a tile where your phone rest. It will attempt to read it over and over again. I ended up placing a tile on my dash. I hit the tile on my dash on my way to my dock in my car.

Thanks. That's what I did as well. However, just wondering why NFC keeps reading a tag on a random basis with the screen on the whole time. There must be some trigger or time-out internally. Oh well...the workaround works.

I know I found out that WidgetLocker (at least, since I apparently hadn't set it properly so the home button didn't unlock it) didn't properly "lock" my phone, so when I had this setup myself, and I'd turn the screen on, it toggled the tag. Because apparently screen on means the NFC reader turned on as well. Possibly when your screen refreshes it was doing the same thing?

[Q] 180-degree Screen Rotation

Coming from WM6, I find it odd that there's no manual screen rotation options in Android. Odder still, that there's no 180-degree rotation mode.
I have a universal Car Mount from my old phone that I like, mostly because it attaches to the air vents. I find this positioning is better than a conventional windshield mount on my car, and avoids the typical issues with suction cups continuously falling off (or melting into place).
The problem is that the dock blocks the USB charging ports on the corner of the Atrix. I can get around this issue by putting the phone in upside down, however to do so I need to 'flip' the display.
The Motorola Auto-Rotate feature does not support the 180-degree position out of the box. I've found several posts asking about this feature, but no answers except a vague reference to Cyanogen Mod, implying that this will take more than a standard app/widget can do.
So, is it possible to do this on the Atrix now that we have root and deodexing options available? This is my first Android phone, so I'm not yet familiar with its innards.
Alternatively, is it possible to flip the display on a given application, specifically Nav or one of the offline GPS programs?
Ideally, what I'd like to see is:
A Widget or shortcut to manually set and/or toggle screen rotation like what was standard on WM6. Outside of the car dock, this is also useful when using the phone on a desk or bed at odd angles.
Script/Shortcut/Icon that sets a specific rotation and then launches the car dock (or GPS app).
Use Launcher Pro.
Gives you full 360 screen rotation.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
No, unless I'm missing something, it does not.
LauncherPro does allow the home screen to be rotated (which is not what I care about right now), but it does not support rotating it 180-degrees (upside down).
Ahh you're right.
The dock will flip to 180, but the screen stops at 90.
Any ideas?
I don't mind playing with Androids internals (time permitting) if this is possible , but as I said my experience with Android so far is minimal (particularly compared to the xda experts).
According to http://developer.motorola.com/docst...at_runtime__Allow_the_user_to_set_preferences, the only options for application preferences are landscape or portrait. Not sure if this is applicable though.
I've found an old related thread for the G1 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=449688&page=2 added screen rotation to that device. It does note though that not all rotations are implemented, and is probably also talking in the context of 2.1.
Another related thread at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/...e-rotations-by-90-but-enable-rotations-by-180 seems to imply that the 180-degree rotation won't work until we get the Android 2.3 update.
The android docs includes a ROTATION_180 definition for the Surface object with a setOrientation method on http://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/Surface.html
It appears that CyanogenMod 7 adds this capability: http://nightly.posterous.com/rotate-180
Clearly we're not going to see CM on the Atrix for a while, but is there anyway we can backport this feature into the Atrix, or will this have to wait for the fabled 2.3 update?

Lockscreen without PIN entry on CM7?

I decided to give CM7 a go last night. Coming from Sense there are a few kinks, but I think most of them can get worked out (mostly just widgets that I liked from Sense). The rom on a whole is just blazing fast, and pretty cool to play with.
The only issue that I have been unable to resolve to my satisfaction is the way the lock screen and PIN/Password entry interact. It seems that every time the lock screen activates, the PIN request also activates. On Sense I could set it to only ask for a PIN after an hour of idle time(exchange server security policy minimum). The only thing close to a fix I have found is to disable to lock screen for 30 minutes. This would be fine if the volume buttons didn't wake the phone.
Can anyone who has been on this rom longer than myself suggest a fix for this?
Thanks
You can disable the 'wake on volume' feature in the settings. As for the pin that is tied to the exchange/mail app. You could try loading a different version (i.e. the one on the sense ROM you were using). That's one reason I use TouchDown for my exchange (it meets the cert requirements for a pin/lock but doesn't use the lockscreen, only prompts after timeout when you open the app, ie want to view your mail).
The disable wake on volume setting doesn't seem to do anything. The phone still wakes when I press the volume key. I tried this both checked and unchecked and performed reboots in between.
So I verified that the disable volume wake does work. However, it only works when the lock screen is enabled. Otherwise the volume key still wakes the phone. Is it possible this means my phone isn't actually asleep (ie I'm wasting more battery than if it shut off automatically)?
Is it possible that an app like widget locker would not be linked to the normal CM lock screen?
This rom is pretty awesome, and I would hate for this one small issue to make me go back to sense.
Yes. This is happening because you are using an exchange server that requires a pin. You can either find a patch, or install a previous version of the mail app, that doesn't support that feature. I believe since 2.1.
Here is the version that I have been using. You will have to remove the account, remove the /system/app/email.all, reboot, and install this app, and add accounts. Annoying, but it works.

I understand why the pin is required. I'm not asking to remove the pin. I actually like the fact that my phone is password protected, but I want to be able to apply the lock screen to my phone without needing a pin EVERY time the screen shuts off. I want a buffer. This doesn't seem to be an option with CM7. Sense 3.0 allows for up to an hour before the pin activates.
It is looking like this won't be an option.

Ok forgive me if this is not what you are looking for. But it sounds to me like going to Settings > CyanogenMod Settings > Lockscreen > Delay and Timeout, and changing those values might be what you are looking for???
Ha, nope that doesn't work either. That disables the entire lock screen for that amount of time, and them I'm stuck with the volume rocker waking up the phone and accidentally dialing people.
I do appreciate all the ideas. Hopefully one will stick.

What about disabling the Volume Rocker Wake?

The volume rocker wakes it unless the lock screen has turned on. So, I either have to set the timer to 0 and punch in my pin every time, or I have to set the timer to 10-30 minutes and deal with the volume rocker waking it. No clue why this is the case.
A code patch was required for this feature
This is an HTC Sense feature and it is not part of AOSP. Early this month, I submitted patchsets to provide this feature in CM7. They have been reviewed, approved and merged.
This feature is included in CM7 nightlies as of 27 July 2011.
There is fine-grained control for all four relevant delays, but selecting "Immediately" for the Slide Lock delays will reproduce the behavior of Froyo Sense. My personal config is:
Screen turned off:
Slide lock delay: 1s
Security lock delay: 5m
Screen timeout:
Slide lock delay: 5m
Security lock delay: 10m
My phone typically only times out if it is sitting next to me on the desk; I always power off the screen if I am going to shove it in my pocket.

I LOVE YOU!!!! thank you so much. cant wait for slayher to merge source and push out another build now... **** yeah!
Thank you. This is terrific news!
Yeah, this was a definite pain point for me: the choice between potentially pocket-launching apps (and rearranging widgets, WTF?!) or inputting my security unlock every few minutes. Why choose? It's a false dichotomy. I love CM7 and didn't want to have to make excuses for a lacking feature.
I believe this is even better than Froyo Sense because users are given the option of granular control... sometimes I power on my screen right away after turning it off (forgot something) and don't have to deal with any kind of lock due to my chosen config, yet I know I am able to shove the device in my pocket without concern (which takes >1 sec).
I realized others would want to reproduce Froyo Sense behavior, so that's their choice as well in this feature ("Immedately"). Others aren't interested at all, which is why I included an overall toggle (defaulted to disable the feature, but will remember your previous Slide Lock settings even if you flip the toggle on/off/on).
Feature control is in CM Settings -> Lockscreen -> Delay and timeout (surprise!)
I am happy that others are interested because this was my first foray into Android development (why start with apps when you can start with the OS?). I have been using this for over a month now without issue on my Inc.
Of course, on my own prerogative I back-merged it on top of 7.0.3 in my dev environment and deployed that to my device, for great overall stability justice, with no changes required for my patchsets. My execution of the change is fairly innocuous and I hope it persists over time despite the deplorable lack of a comprehensive, automated CM7 JUnit regression test suite that I wished to contribute to but doesn't exist.
Cheers. Hope it satisfies everyone!

to disable the volume wake open root explorer and go to system/usr/keylayout open mecha-keypad.kl in text editor and delete the "wake" beside volume up and down. Then save and reboot.
Organophosphate, thanks for relaying this great news!
I've been asking around different places to see if anyone knew if the pattern lock screen could be delayed and nobody had a response or even understood what I was asking about. I didn't even realize it was a HTC Sense feature until I was fiddling around w/ a friend's Samasung Charge. I'm also surprised this basic feature wasn't already included in previous builds. Well, better late than never.
I was able to achieve delaying the PIN activation by using the modified email.apk along with Delayed Lock from the market. Delayed Lock also integrates well with Widget Locker. The combination works pretty well.
The security lock screen delay is officially part of CM7.1 1.4!!! Woot

[Q] Sleep Mode Clock

I saw a review of the lovely Nokia N9, and I noticed that whenever it is put in sleep mode, it does not shut off the screen entirely - instead, it shows a clock that moves around the screen to prevent burn-in. I rather like this idea, and it apparently draws very little juice from the AMOLED screen (which is what my Captivate has).
I spent some time looking for an Android app that accomplishes something like this, but I didn't find anything like it. If there is such an app, could someone point me towards it? If not, is this even possible?
Alright, since this thread doesn't seem to be generating much interest, allow me to bump it with some ideas that might help spark your imagination.
- Replaces sleep mode completely, and might even replace lockscreens
- Displays notification alerts
- Can be toggled on/off by, say, holding down the volume rocker for a few seconds
- Uses the proximity sensor to disable itself when facing down or when placed in one's pocket
- Can be configured to only display under certain conditions (e.g. at night time when plugged in, so as to function as a bedside clock)
- Can cook bacon and eggs
Something like this probably doesn't exist, but would anyone else be interested in something like this if it doesn't use too much battery? If so, I might put up a bounty for whomever brings this to fruition. Would a developer be able to tell me if this is possible? I realize it would probably require root access, but that's fine with me.

Some questions by new owner and ex-tablet-Z owner.

OK so I got my Z4 tablet three days ago. Fantastic construction, fantastic specs on paper.
I had a Z tablet up until last weekend that I sold for a good price and got this as a much needed replacement.
Both are LTE versions.
Anyway, here are some things I've noticed and I would like to have your comments on.
1) The "antitheft" system for the first two days seemed to be a PITA. As my device is set for three users (me, my wife, my son), it kept popping for the others that it locked and needed MY credentials to unlock. I did unlock it at least five times for each, which means I can't really be... far from the device and let them use it. That I use two step authentication, makes things even harder. Once my "authenticator" phone was out of power and I had to wait several minutes to unlock the tablet. Yesterday I updated to latest firmware and I haven't noticed the issue since. But it's just one day, it may come back. Once (before updating firmware) I tried to disable My Xperia (although I love the find my device feature) so they could work, but it kept me "waiting". In the end I pressed back and it didn't get disabled. Any similar experiences with the theft protection?
2) Backlight (set in auto) seems to be too dark some times. I clicked on the intensity bar, set it brighter while STILL in auto (like it is now set to have a brighter "base value"?). Does this sound normal?
3) This is not a Z4 issue, I also had this in Z. It's probably a lollipop thing or I don't understand something properly. Clicking the volume buttons I can set it to "no" sound from home screen. Or so I think. Because even if I set it to "off", apps STILL have sound and I have to RE-adjust the volume to off from within the app (without the "priority buttons" under the volume bar)... Am I the only one to find this stupid?
4) Anybody notices some lag or ESPECIALLY stuck web browser, when other profiles (users) have run apps? If I reset the device and not visit the other profiles, the device is more snappy. If some other user goes in, even quiting every app they run, the device seems to get slower when back in "owner" user. Still fast but not as "snappy". Anybody noticed the same?
5) Any idea when we get Android M? Will we get 5.1 before that? I mean official firmware. Anybody?
6) Is there a way to go to test menu? The tablet Z method doesn't seem to work.
7) Serious. No restricted profiles. Why? Sony support replied that lollipop has this disabled only on 3G/LTE devices (that makes no sense), yet my Z was also LTE and both are on lollipop 5.0.2 and it DID have restricted profiles. What's up with that?
Thank you for your time people, have fun.
...wow
2) Yes.. brightness is usually set a little low at first for battery purposes.
3) There are different volumes for different things. Using the volume rocker on the home screen and putting it all the way down will only adjust ringer/notification volume. In-app sounds will use the media volume which you will need to adjust while media sounds are playing or you can adjust it in your sound settings. Not stupid imo, just gives more flexibility.
5) It'll come when it comes.. nobody knows except google and sony. I'd like to hope we'd get 5.1 before 6.
(pending something on the other questions above)
2) So the set value, when brightness is in "auto" is like a base value?
3) Well I find it stupid. Why: Because when I am in home screen I used to be able to manage the universal audio settings of the device. Turning device to mute, would turn it to mute. As simple as that. Also clicking a simple icon next to volume bar, you could separately adjust notification and ringer and stuff like that. Now? You THINK you set your device to mute, but you have only set the notifications. You sleep in a silent house (next to the wife or something), start a game, it YELLS with the last volume settings, ignoring that you set the device to mute in home screen and you have to "run" and re-adjust the volume to zero, usually with some delay (in the meantime waking everybody) since the device won't let you adjust anything while loading the game. No, I call this stupid.
5) Well if it won't delay 6, I don't mind for 5.1. But I want 6 the soonest possible.

Palm PVG100 Screen Wake On Plug & Fully Charged

I'm close to having the phone perfect but these two still persist. There is a myriad of old options for Xposed and I was wondering if anyone has had success with any of them? I use the phone for a GPS unit on a cycle with a dynamo hub, so the waking up is annoying.
I've sorted the sound already, so there are two wake up conditions:-
1. power is enabled
2. battery reaches 100%.
Cheers, Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I can't help with Xposed, but I have a suggestion and a side question.
My suggestion : try IpBike (with IpBikeKey to unlock it).
The author of IpBike reads and answers e-mails. He is opened to new features if the idea is good.
If IpBike can't force the screen off (I never tested, as I don't charge my device as I cycle !), he may add the feature.
My question : is the PVG100 ANT+ capable ?
I use a Sony-Ericsson Xperia Active as a cycle computer (powered by IpBike), with ANT+ Speed, Cadence and Heart-rate sensors.
I would like to replace it with a PVG100E/EU, but the ANT directory does not list any Palm device.
Have a nice day !
Cobus.
Probably not, ANT is an extra cost for a manufacturer.
I found an open-source app which works. It's a bit old but still it does the job.
Basically it registers itself as an admin app so it can control the screen, then when a wakeup comes in it turns the screen back off. It's quick enough that the screen doesn't get a chance to come on. No root required.

Have you tried enabling "zen mode?" Zen mode keeps everything on the phone from waking I believe. I have tried it, but got annoyed when the wifi would cut out once I turned my screen off, because it would stop what I was listening to. Not sure exactly what you're looking for, but zen mode might be something to play around with.
To activate zen mode, the easiest way is probably through the app "setedit." Under "system" options, scroll to the bottom and change zen mode from 0 to 1.
