Sleep of death on ICS 4.0.4 with Wake Lock on - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought my s2, unlocked version, 1 month ago and a week later, it started shutting off when the screen was turned off or when I put it in my bag and moved around. I searched around and found it's called sleep of death. But none of the solutions worked. My phone is on ICS 4.0.4 and it is rooted. So far, I have tried 1. the clock app trick
2. disabling sumsung apps
3. load monitor app installed with wake lock on
It still goes into deep sleep only revivable by long press on power button. What is worse is that the battery drain, which was only one to two percent becomes a massive drop from 80 to 20 percent. It only happens when the phone is left unused for a while. No intereference with phone calls and messages yet. Service and such are also unreliable in myanmar. Anyone here has any suggestions? I'm at my wits end. Will a manual update to Jellybean solve this problem?

Update to 4.1.2,an advice

Thanks. I will try that.

Did a hard reset. Still doing OK.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2

You did a hard reset on 4.0.4?......
That, fella, is a bit like playing with a rattlesnake......see emmc brickbug...
Just be careful.....
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2

Thanks for the warning. Still going well though. I was just so fed up with random shutoffs.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2

I don't know if you want to stay "stock rooted", but my advice is to get as far away from 4.0.4 as possible.....
You have a number of options....
If you want to stay as close to stock as possible, get Moblie Odin pro from playstore and flash a firmware...either 4.0.3, or something newer than 4.0.4....
Or.....
Go the custom route....
Download cm9, cm10 or cm10.1 and a compatible kernel....Siyah, Dorimanx or Philz....all available on XDA, and use CWM (if it came with your root) to flash the kernel (first), do your required wipes (second) and flash your chosen cusROM and associated GApps (third). Just get away from 4.0.4.....fast. And for your phones wellbeing, just DON'T wipe data while you're on the 4.0.4 kernel....the brickbug may not have happened this time....but that's not a guarantee it won't happen next time......
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2

Didn't realised I've taken such a huge risk. Thanks again for the details. Will try stock jb.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2

It must have been fun tho
Sent from the little guy

That's what I'm currently running....if you do get mobile odin pro (paid version) it will inject your root privileges into the stock firmware and perform a safe wipe as well.....
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2

Not to sound too ignorant (but I am an absolute novice), what happen to the old root? Will the phone become unrooted on upgrade? I don't mind rooting again. Just not too sure about it.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2

You will lose root when flashing a new stock ROM.
The only way to "keep" root is by flashing a pre-rooted ROM or by flashing via Mobile Odin Pro.
Sent from the little guy

Yeah....if/when you use M.O.P to flash the firmware, make sure that the "everroot" option is ticked and root will be kept.....
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2

Thanks. I thought rooting might somehow interfere with the upgrade. Silly me.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2

Well, as I said, it'll "keep" root.
Both pre rooted ROM and M.O will root the new ROM while flashing it.
So yes, your guess was right, you'll always lose root when flashing a new ROM, these ways we mentioned gets you rooted again.

Flashed stock JB yesterday. So far no sod. And the battery is running fine. Hopefully this will be the end of my problems.

How did you get on with Stock JB and SOD? I'm using RootBox, and it seems that no matter what i try i still get an occasional SOD.

I am still doing fine with stock JB. Wish I could give you a better answer but I'm not very good with technologies myself. Hope you find a solution soon.

Was this a really dumb question or nobody knows?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
It's pretty much a matter of knowing what you flash before you flash it. If you've never flashed ICS, you're on GB bootloaders. If you flashed ICS you have ICS bootloaders. What does it matter anyways?

What i have read when you flash ics, does not change your bootloader, i have had no problems going back to gb

You are wrong.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
Not entirely... Flashing ics in a cwm zip does not flash boots. At all.
And the boots in the Odin flash dint seem to be any different than the gingerbread ones.
It's not like on some previous Samsung devices jumping from Froyo to gingerbread, where you HAD to upgrade boots or recovery was inaccessible
Oops. My bad. I thought I had read that the ICS Odin did change them. Sorry all.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
I'm pretty sure that Odin the first leak changed the bootloader, but the cwm version did not, so the people who jumped the gun with the initial leak had to revert to stock and redo the cwm and root process before flashing the cwm leak. This scenario caused most of the confusion a are still experiencing with all these different suggestions for the so called proper wiping procedure. You'll notice several different formats stemming from the initial Odin/exe vs cwm versions. Some people say"I had to do this x amount of times" and others say"I had to do this z amount of times in this order"... I have literally read almost every single post in this forum(general,Q&A,accessories,Dev, not so much themes) in preparation to mod my note without fail. In my opinion, people are being very lazy about the amount of research they should be doing before modding their phone. This lack of initiative causes confusion and repetitive Q&A's.

No data connection after leaving WLAN-Network

I use the standard Rom ICS Germany.

When I restart my phone, all works fine...

I get the same. Doesn't happen every time, but it happens more often than not. I thought it was Juice defender that was causing the problems.
Using Generic DE through flashtool, and Doomlords Advanced Stock kernel build 8.
Full wipe and SD card formatted before install.
Is there any chance of hope getting rid of this problem?
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
Same problem here, generic DE, upgrade via Sony PC Companion. Might be related to Google's NetworkLocationService, last time I restarted it and it helped.
Try another firmware,it happened for me before on GB.
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk 2
It happens on Generic CH also.
Could it be that the problem lies with the kernel?
Same problem over here, on Advanced Stock Kernel

Mine randomly does it too, it doesn't even have to be on wlan first, it's just very random and you have to reboot to get data back! On CH generic
Sent from my Xperia S on which The Kernel has been installed but he bought no chicken.....
The same with Ka09 Xperia SSpeed and Advanced ICS Kernel, but I can't manage to get data back, even after rebooting, flashing kernel and rom several times ...
Stuck with wifi for now
EDIT: Data back again after a new "flash time"
I have this problem since my old atrix, and a friend with an EVO 3D has the same problem too.
I think it is an android issue...
I have the same problem on generic CH rom. I recently switched to ICS advanced kernel but I still seem to have the issue. It just seems to happen randomly and rebooting has (so far at least) always resolved it but it's irritating as I don't know it's happened until I go to google something or send an email
I went back to the GB Rom Europe. 75
Now all is well again!
The camera starts also faster than in ICS!

This happened to me randomly. Tested both the CH firmwares and the Nordic firmware also.
Ics is just buggy... We just need to wait for fixes..
You can also try another kernel with ics.
Those are more kernel related.

Gt-8160L/Ace 2 serious problem.

As seen in the title.. I own a Samsung galaxy ace 2. The problem i am having is that..basically sometimes, turning on my phone, it would boot come on... But every process would crash repeatedly. The phone would not be operable. Only solution would be to restore a backup made via cwm.
This problem doesn't happen every time i restart my phone. It happens when either my batt is low or less than half... And i have to restart for some reason...or if the batt died and i try turning on the phone before the batt level is charged past half.
Not sure whats causing the problem. My phone isn't rooted atm. I only have my kernel changed which is cwm. Os is 2.3.6. GB was previously rooted... But i get boot loops whenever i try to root it now. Thanks in advance.

Android version 4.2.2, kernel 3.0.6.4-CM.

Take a nandroid backup then wipe data via recovery. Test bluetooth. This either rules out or identifies the cause being the rom. If it works (and its not the rom / kernel) then its your data.
This is definitely the best first course of action imo. Cuts the field down the middle and narrows it by half

Thanks for taking the time to respond.
I wiped the data area and no dice, so I'm flashing the latest PA to check if it's a problem with the ROM.
EDIT --
Flashed PA and Bluetooth now works with no problems. Then just for posterity I went back and flashed a clean copy of Xylon and it had the problem right from the start.
It's a shame, I really liked Xylon. But looks like I'll be using PA from now on.
Thanks for the help everyone.
At least you've identified it. Paranoid android is good though. My current favourite

Flash back to stock with odin and reroot and install recovery .... then see if it still does it ... could be hardware issue or stay on stock for a couple days and see ...if it's hardware get it replaced otherwise it could just be a bad software issue that could be fixed by starting over ...

Ok will do thanks! This didn't occur until maybe a week or two ago so I can't be sure of the cause. I'll find a guide and see if I can figure out how to do all of that.

After looking for fixes what worked for me was flashing twrp recovery

Could you post a link for the TWRP recovery. I just had a modem crash for the first time today. I thought I was on the latest stable TWRP version, but if there's another one that may be better I'd be ok flashing that.

You've been getting modem crashes on a regular, sustained basis? Are the moments repeatable or unpredictable?
I've had them when completely stock with only root, and when running stock DeOdex, plus when on custom roms, on both NABD and NC5D (ie, before and after WiFi calling).

Very unpredictable when they happen.. I cannot replicate. They've all happened since flashing the NC5 engineering bootloader. Once i had 3 in a row all back to back about 5 to 10 minutes apart.
I've contemplated flashing the NC5 developers bootloader but from what you've just told me, they'd probably still occur.
Right now they occur maybe once every or every other week.
This never occurred while i was on stock NAB
