How do you check which bootloader you have? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I assume there are only two right now correct? How do you check which version you have?

Was this a really dumb question or nobody knows?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2

It's pretty much a matter of knowing what you flash before you flash it. If you've never flashed ICS, you're on GB bootloaders. If you flashed ICS you have ICS bootloaders. What does it matter anyways?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2

What i have read when you flash ics, does not change your bootloader, i have had no problems going back to gb

You are wrong.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2

Not entirely... Flashing ics in a cwm zip does not flash boots. At all.
And the boots in the Odin flash dint seem to be any different than the gingerbread ones.
It's not like on some previous Samsung devices jumping from Froyo to gingerbread, where you HAD to upgrade boots or recovery was inaccessible

Oops. My bad. I thought I had read that the ICS Odin did change them. Sorry all.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2

I'm pretty sure that Odin the first leak changed the bootloader, but the cwm version did not, so the people who jumped the gun with the initial leak had to revert to stock and redo the cwm and root process before flashing the cwm leak. This scenario caused most of the confusion a are still experiencing with all these different suggestions for the so called proper wiping procedure. You'll notice several different formats stemming from the initial Odin/exe vs cwm versions. Some people say"I had to do this x amount of times" and others say"I had to do this z amount of times in this order"... I have literally read almost every single post in this forum(general,Q&A,accessories,Dev, not so much themes) in preparation to mod my note without fail. In my opinion, people are being very lazy about the amount of research they should be doing before modding their phone. This lack of initiative causes confusion and repetitive Q&A's.

Future GB roms

I've been reading a lot of threads about the ups and downs of ics, I'm yet to flash it and might stay on gb for a little while especially since I've been reading threads were people have tried to go back to gb and weren't able to do to either user error or otherwise. I'm wondering if the gb development will lose support do to ics being out, I'm sure it will especially once ics becomes more stable across the board.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
Dude, just flash ICS already. It's pretty freakin' sweet.
I find ICS alot more enjoyable than GB even if it's just a leak : it's stable enough to be a daily rom, and I work alot with my phone.
I found ics to be far to buggy go me. Flash the unofficial. I love it. And they're coming out with a I've ROM soon

I'd like to try it but not at the risk of not being able to go back. I've heard of several issues a few of which i wouldnt be able to deal with, YouTube not working right and poor call quality...my area is bad enough as it is.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
I don't think any of these issues are the norm.

ICS is amazing. Much better than GB. Not sure how people are having problems with youtube as I've flashed the Odin ICS and the saurom ICS with no problems. I've actually had zero app issues.

Nash...dont flash it. Just stick with GB roms until official ICS is released. Save yourself the trouble.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
I've used both extensively. I've been on ICS for months on my atrix. That's the biggest thing i disliked about switching to the note. Oh, and no notification light!
ICS is far more polished than GB. Its finally android that looks pretty. GB development is probably mostly dead.

is there a difference between the 2 ways to flash ics, odin/cwm? I believe flashing thru cwm keeps root but not sure about the other one. I wonder if one is buggier then the other.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
I can't say for sure, but from what I have read and my personal experience, installing the one click exe first, then cwm, then the custom ROMs is a good way to go. I did this and have zero issues.

What do you mean by first installing via one click than cwm? Did you install it twice or both ways?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
The one click ICS leak is a stock image. It formats the ENTIRE internal SD card. You will lose everything including root and recovery.

So did you use (and recommend) flashing via cwm?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
If you flash through Odin it formats your drive and no root. But it's not an issue to root it. However if you flash the.collectives basic build or dagr8 build through cwm you'll have.root, and it'll be debloated

What I am trying to say overall is that I have read about less issues with phones who did the following:
1) Install one click Odin Leak (reboot and let it all set up of course)
2) Install CWM Recovery via Odin
3) Flash Dag or Collective ICS ROM
These steps will give you all the components of ICS (including bootloaders etc), CWM, rooted and debloated.
There does seem to be one person who can't get back to GB after doing this. But there are multiple threads in the QA section which show otherwise. I have not tried going back to GB yet, as I am giddy every time I use my phone now. ICS has brought it to another level. No way I am ever looking back, especially with something from the Collective on the way.
I installed and rooted ICS very easily
now i wish i hadnt , My ICS is wayyyyyyyy to buggy for me, i get alot of FC's and reboots, wish i had waited and now want to go back to GB but im just going to wait out the bugginess till a more stable rom comes out. I can say when ICS is running good it is way smoother than GB but that isnt too often with me but good news is the collective has something cooking up and should only be a little bit before changing out this leaked rom !!!
just my $.02

forgive me for being a dumb a$$ but I'm slightly confused about the steps you posted. Wouldn't step 2 have to come first, and i thought the Odin one click was the ics rom (step 3)? Here's what I've done to my phone. Rooted, installed cwm and completed a cwm back up, i than downloaded ics from the picture in the dev section onto my phone. From this point would all i have to do is go into cwm and flash my downloaded ics and would that sort of be your 1,2,3 steps? Sorry for not fully understanding.

PG98IMG question

So in all my flashing, since I got this phone two days go, I tried to get BAMF ICS build to work and it was a no go for me.
But my question is in all of it I upgraded it to like version 3.xx or something like that....it wont let me downgrade saying 'main version is older'
I have a 2.3 build on now and its running....but I thought I needed to back it back down to work best.....but how do you get it to force an older PG98IMG on?
I've tried the nifty little automated tool
Flashing manually
Flashing via the comp
Nothing seems to push it on
Thoughts?

makes absolutely no difference unless your flashing the glitch kernel...even then all it does is allow the glitch splash screen on boot to function.

yes i read that, but have you tried both bootloaders with that skunkworks kernel and seen any difference? i currently am using gb bootloaders but all im saying is I dont see a difference and it shouldnt have anything to do with having problems flashing kerns. jt1134 said along time ago that gb bootloaders do nothing more than froyo variants.

I hear ya, and I too know jt's take on the subject but when the glitch guys say to flash them or don't bother posting bugs I gotta heed their advice. And no I haven't tried skunk yet but back around m4 I ran without gb bootloaders and all was fine. I'm still on b31 ha! Just been too lazy (and satisfied) to move forward, but I probably will now to check out the new hybrid UI.

Hello all! I need serious help!

I really need to be brought up to speed on HTC development. I'm coming from a Motorola Droid x2 and I thought development would be the same but its totally different. I don't even know what the hell s-on or s-off means. I'm going to be receiving 2 new rezounds for my wife and I and I'm going to need to get them rooted, updated to ics, and new roms flashed on them. My Droids bootloader was locked down so our devs just worked around the kernel. Anyone know of any tutorials or anything that can help me out and bring me up to speed on the lingo and what (if anything) I should not do with these phones? Also, looks like they are being shipped to me running 2.3.4 which needs to go! Thanks!

Story, one more question from the FNG, is there really that much of a benefit to wait for the official ics to be released? I'm getting the new phones today or tomorrow and I'm somewhat impatient. I can't stand bloatware. Sorry if I'm asking obvious questions but I know once I root and install ics firmware I can't go back if there is a release. Thanks.

You can go back if you're S-OFF with a RUU.
For the time being, you can flash a few different ICS leaks which are close to the official OTA but that's the beauty of modding our phones, you can even stay on Gingerbread and flash ICS ROMs and run fine with a patch as well.
Having problems with s-off. Using controlbear but everytime I attempt to begin program it says connect device and install drivers. Thi is very frustrating. Would like to actually get to the wire trick

Sure you have installed the HTC Sync drivers, and gone through the whole HTC Dev Unlock process properly? And make sure the option for USB debugging is on in the ROMs settings, plus Fast Boot is off. Check basic cabling and whatnot first too of course. Try a clean run on another PC if all else fails.
Thanks for the help!

Okay, so, I pretty much have everything set up perfect except does anyone know how to change boot animation? Running clean rom dev edition and when I use rom toolbox to change and install new animation then reboot, it just shows the regular clean rom boot animation so the change isn't sticking obviously. Thanks

I was more or less asking if it was possible because I'm new to Samsung and all I see is Odin cwm in the Samsung forums. I'm coming from HTC so my knowledge is back to ubernoob when it cones to root. I know this phone is new, hell big red isn't even out yet so I wasn't like Wtf how come it isn't done yet.

I would wait a bit to install either of the cwm recoveries. Neither one work 100% yet. There are some issues with both.
