I've been reading a lot of threads about the ups and downs of ics, I'm yet to flash it and might stay on gb for a little while especially since I've been reading threads were people have tried to go back to gb and weren't able to do to either user error or otherwise. I'm wondering if the gb development will lose support do to ics being out, I'm sure it will especially once ics becomes more stable across the board.

Dude, just flash ICS already. It's pretty freakin' sweet.
I find ICS alot more enjoyable than GB even if it's just a leak : it's stable enough to be a daily rom, and I work alot with my phone.
I found ics to be far to buggy go me. Flash the unofficial. I love it. And they're coming out with a I've ROM soon

I'd like to try it but not at the risk of not being able to go back. I've heard of several issues a few of which i wouldnt be able to deal with, YouTube not working right and poor call quality...my area is bad enough as it is.

Nash...dont flash it. Just stick with GB roms until official ICS is released. Save yourself the trouble.

I've used both extensively. I've been on ICS for months on my atrix. That's the biggest thing i disliked about switching to the note. Oh, and no notification light!
ICS is far more polished than GB. Its finally android that looks pretty. GB development is probably mostly dead.

is there a difference between the 2 ways to flash ics, odin/cwm? I believe flashing thru cwm keeps root but not sure about the other one. I wonder if one is buggier then the other.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
I can't say for sure, but from what I have read and my personal experience, installing the one click exe first, then cwm, then the custom ROMs is a good way to go. I did this and have zero issues.

What do you mean by first installing via one click than cwm? Did you install it twice or both ways?

The one click ICS leak is a stock image. It formats the ENTIRE internal SD card. You will lose everything including root and recovery.

So did you use (and recommend) flashing via cwm?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
If you flash through Odin it formats your drive and no root. But it's not an issue to root it. However if you flash the.collectives basic build or dagr8 build through cwm you'll have.root, and it'll be debloated

What I am trying to say overall is that I have read about less issues with phones who did the following:
1) Install one click Odin Leak (reboot and let it all set up of course)
2) Install CWM Recovery via Odin
3) Flash Dag or Collective ICS ROM
These steps will give you all the components of ICS (including bootloaders etc), CWM, rooted and debloated.
There does seem to be one person who can't get back to GB after doing this. But there are multiple threads in the QA section which show otherwise. I have not tried going back to GB yet, as I am giddy every time I use my phone now. ICS has brought it to another level. No way I am ever looking back, especially with something from the Collective on the way.
I installed and rooted ICS very easily
now i wish i hadnt , My ICS is wayyyyyyyy to buggy for me, i get alot of FC's and reboots, wish i had waited and now want to go back to GB but im just going to wait out the bugginess till a more stable rom comes out. I can say when ICS is running good it is way smoother than GB but that isnt too often with me but good news is the collective has something cooking up and should only be a little bit before changing out this leaked rom !!!
just my $.02

forgive me for being a dumb a$$ but I'm slightly confused about the steps you posted. Wouldn't step 2 have to come first, and i thought the Odin one click was the ics rom (step 3)? Here's what I've done to my phone. Rooted, installed cwm and completed a cwm back up, i than downloaded ics from the picture in the dev section onto my phone. From this point would all i have to do is go into cwm and flash my downloaded ics and would that sort of be your 1,2,3 steps? Sorry for not fully understanding.

First off....yes I've done alot of researching.
Thing is that there is soo much info that it is a little overwhelming.
As I understand....I can switch back and forth from 2.2 & 2.3.x and back thru cwm ....difference being that while in 2.3.x I cannot view the recovery screen but can still flash back thru cwm. And when I return to 2.2 I get recovery back so long as I haven't flashed the bootloaders for 2.3.x.
The reason im asking this is becuz I don't have a comp right now so using someone elses comp to odin back is a bit of a hassle for me.
Thanks for any and all input
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I can't speak for others but I can say personally I've done it many times without odin. I have nand backup of 2.2 on my phone. I have not installed gingerbread bootloaders. When I want to flash 2.3 roms, I factory reset and flash it. Sheree that I can't see recovery ofcourse. To switch back to my 2.2 backup, I keep kernel s like bali, overstock or any stock voodoo kernel on the phone. I use sgs kernel flasher from the market to flash those 2.2 kernel s. That puts the phone in bootloop but gives me red recovery. I then factory reset and restore my 2.2 backup. Has worked every time so far...btw everytime means atleast 20 times here.

Switching from 2.2 to 2.3 is fine, it will update as necessary.
Switching back down to 2.2, do as Alex recommended and you'll be fine.
Thank you very much guys! This was exactly what I needed to hear

Sent from my T959 using XDA App
Just go to the stickies and pull all the goodies for Odin. It doesn't take that long to set up. Then you can just flash the GB bootloaders. Remember the GB BLs are backwards compatible.
By backwards compatible,do you mean that with gb bl's they work fine with 2.2?
Also I thought when on one 2.3 rom I could easily jump around to any 2.3 rom like with 2.2........but cwm is not allowing me to do this
Sent from my T959 using XDA App
You could jump around fine from any touchwiz based 2.3 rom (simply honey, asgard, malice) but not cm7 or miui
bootloaders for vibrant are backward compatible, you may have an extra boot splash logo but everything works the same. flashing bootloaders can be dangerous....So i would personally recommend staying on GB bootladers

CM7 and MUIU Roms are different, you can't jump back and forth from them because they use different file systems. they are much more complicated. the only way out is to odin back to stock I believe

Odin'ing back is probably the easiest way to get back. Flashing the bootloaders CAN be dangerous, but just follow the directions and voila! Not flashing bootloaders just cause it COULD cause problems is like not driving your car cause you COULD crash and burn into a fireball.
Just sayin...
But yes, they will work on Froyo roms as well.

Not entirely... Flashing ics in a cwm zip does not flash boots. At all.
And the boots in the Odin flash dint seem to be any different than the gingerbread ones.
It's not like on some previous Samsung devices jumping from Froyo to gingerbread, where you HAD to upgrade boots or recovery was inaccessible
Oops. My bad. I thought I had read that the ICS Odin did change them. Sorry all.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
I'm pretty sure that Odin the first leak changed the bootloader, but the cwm version did not, so the people who jumped the gun with the initial leak had to revert to stock and redo the cwm and root process before flashing the cwm leak. This scenario caused most of the confusion a are still experiencing with all these different suggestions for the so called proper wiping procedure. You'll notice several different formats stemming from the initial Odin/exe vs cwm versions. Some people say"I had to do this x amount of times" and others say"I had to do this z amount of times in this order"... I have literally read almost every single post in this forum(general,Q&A,accessories,Dev, not so much themes) in preparation to mod my note without fail. In my opinion, people are being very lazy about the amount of research they should be doing before modding their phone. This lack of initiative causes confusion and repetitive Q&A's.

I was like you over a month ago. I've came from a heavily custom original Droid, to a Droid X2 to now the Rezound. The HTC method is really different, my recommendation would be to flash TwiZted SenZes. wildtang gives full instructions on what to do and they're very clear. Also his official website AndroidPassions.com features a "The Box" where you can chat live with developers and he'll help you most of the time if he's in. Please note that if you flash the new firmware to run ICS ROMs, you can't revert back to using Gingerbread ROM from what I hear. But ICS Roms are highly stable now since the last leak we had of an official Rezound leak. If you have any questions please ask...

Wrong section, should only be posting threads here if you are a dev.
The current ICS leaks are nice, really can't recommend them until HTC fixes the kernel issues though. Of course everyone results vary.
I wouldn't flash the leaked ICS RUU either, there are work arounds for the most popular ROMs now.
Check out the list of ROMs at the top of this forum for ideas and post any questions in the Q&A section or the ROM thread if it's specific to that ROM.

I will try to save you some headaches. Make sure you use amon ra recovery. Do not use clockworkmod as many people have issues and if you let the battery die while cwm is installed you will have to find a new way to charge that battery or buy a new one. I have been a big fan of Scott's clean roms. It is mostly stock sense just cleaned up and smooth. Some of the others are a bit more themed to that developers liking. Scott has good instructions on his website. And make sure you read then reread the original post so you understand what to do, what works, and what may not work. Scotts clean Rom 4.3 is a great place to start and included is the patch for the old firmware. Then flash some of the others to see what you prefer. I am currently running BAMF sense 4.0 and it runs great but there are still some bugs to be worked out. You will pick it up quick as long as you read instructions first. Like someone else said ask if you have problems but just in the right forum. Happy flashing!

I love having the number in the battery icon. I saves me real estate on my screen by not having to install a 3rd party widget to tell me whats left. Anyway, look through the themes and app section but this may be the only person working on what your looking for. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1551602 at the bottom of the OP you will see "To go back to the stock look for CleanROM 4.3. Flash this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12286815/Cle...Flyhalf205.zip ". Not sure if it has the number in the icon. This is not my work all credit to flyhalf205 and who_mike_d so hit up some of their threads and give some thanks. This is only for CleanRom 4.3. If your on a different version you can find some older post if you look around.

flash unofficial best there is...hands down!
Have you ever rooted before? Installed an alternate recovery like CWM? Flashed a ROM? Created a nandroid backup? Cleared caches? Formatted system or data? Used ADB? Used Titanium backup? Run non-stock launchers? Modified system files such as build.prop?
If not, search for everything I just listed, and start reading. None of it is really hard to do, but having a basic understanding of each of those moving pieces is going to be key to running a stable custom ROM.
Most custom roms have install instructions in the OP. If the basic steps there confuse you, then please don't rush anything and START READING!

you can only install roms that are built for your specific device. Trying to install roms meant for other phones will likely break (aka "brick" ) your phone. So no, you cannot install the Galaxy Nexus ROMs on your Note
Luckily, our Note currently has several ICS options to pick from.
First, read up on how to install and use Clockworkmod Recovery (aka "CWM" ). Once again, only install the version that is mean for our i717 AT&T Note.
Then, as I said before, I recommend "The Unofficial v2.0 Beta4" as a stable first ICS rom. Go to its thread and start studying...

So my question is which ROMs are compatible with this ota? Basic question I'm sure. I came from the Razr and the kernel had to match so I assume its the same here? Anyone willing to shed some light on this for me would be greatly appreciated.

Any rom you want as long as it is in the VZW Note 2 threads can be flashed ours arent locked down by what update we are on because our bootloader is unlocked where it isnt on Moto phones. AOSP roms require AOSP kernels as TW roms require TW kernels. The roms come with kernels though so that isnt something tk worry about unless you I want to.
The only thing to remember is if you go to a 4.2 rom and want t I go back to 4.1 you have to flash a downgrade zip so your SD card doesnt become corrupted. You can find the downgrade zip in the Official CM 10.1 thread in the OP.
Check out Droidstyles guide in Android Development, its a sticky, it explains quite a bit and would ne helpful to you I think.

When it got to the end and said finish to reboot it just turned off and wouldnt turn back on. Couldn't get to recovery or download mode. I had to pull the battery and then turn it on. It went straight to the new ROM though without a hitch. Is that a normal part of the flashing procedure on the N2? The battery pull I mean, or did I miss something?

CleanROM's good. It was the first ROM I flashed when I got my Note II too.
Eventually though, you may want to switch to something more feature-rich like Jelly Beans, which is what I'm rocking now. The features it adds are pretty awesome and you get full touchwiz functionality (S-Pen and the like) with the look of AOSP.
DL'ing Jelly Beans now. Gotta make a new TiBu before flashing though. Will give it a go shortly. My wife fusses at me sometimes cause on my old phone (Razr) and on this one I am always flashing different ROMs. She especially hates it when she calls and my phone goes directly to voicemail cause I am in recovery flashing a ROM or kernel.

I'm not new to modding phones, recently I've been through an S3, DNA, RAZR HD and M, and even another Note 2. I made the mistake of swapping the Note 2 for an iPhone 5, and regretted it about thirty seconds later. Now that's my wife's phone, and due to the grace of another (local) xda member, I'm back rockin' the Note 2. This time around in looking forward to getting into some serious flashing and tweaking to get the most from the hardware. I've decided this is Verizon's best phone at the moment, with everything I need.
Don't worry, you're not alone in having a wife who gets annoyed at flashing and tweaking. Happens to me all the time, but I use the excuse it's one of the few hobbies that I have which doesn't involve the rest of the family and I need a bit of alone time. It kind of works as an excuse until the point where I need to use it again.
I'm looking forward to being part of this community and wanted to say hello.

I like jedi X rom...I got 3 days off my battery with just the right settings...my recommendation is to not mess with the per app dpi for the settings app because now I'm stuck without a settings app and about to switch roms...just about any rom will work as long as it's for your carrier... Best of luck!

Beans is the best! photosphere camera (page 1 of forum) works great with build 16! Check it out! Also, I agree about Jedi: definitely magic battery settings. Enjoy your new hobby! My wife is the same way.
