[News]No Android 5.0 update for Galaxy S2 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

As stated by GSMArena website there will be no Android 5.0 update for Galaxy S2 and obviously should apply to the variants too just like ours.
Although this news is leaked from the company's insider, it may be true. This news may be highly disappointing to many. Here's the link. Go ahead check it out.

Hell its a gift that we are running 4.2.2....I never thought for a second we would get 5.0
Getting a new phone this year anyway....but the i777 has been a trooper...and I have no complaints.

This just in:
The sky is blue

Not shocking. Will be upgrading in the next couple of months.

Agreed on that it's a miracle that we're even getting 4.2 and by we I mean the i9100. I'm available to upgrade in may finally and right now it's between the s4 and the one but I'm having a hard time choosing, if there really isn't going to be cyaogenmod for it (we'll see about that once it's out) then that's a huuuuge detractor, i just really hate the buttons on the one and prefer the features of touchwiz to sense (I do NOT want BlinkFeed).

Hope we get the port atleast.

i am going sony xperia z way as devs are raving about the way sony provides all and lot of extras to fix build etc.
i prefer stock over touchwiz so makes sense for me to move to xperia z and get all cm goodies

If we do not even have 4.2.2, then I'm not even thinking about 5.x

Honestly I expected this to happen. But, I also expect that we'll have functional builds of 5.0 on the i777 also.

I don't, I'm almost positive that there won't be 5.0 at all for this phone unless we get a new cyanogenmod maintainer for our device.

Funny all the news I been seeing on the Sprint variant is saying 4.1.2.

I had to see it for myself http://m.cnet.com/news/sprints-samsung-galaxy-s2-scores-jelly-bean-update/57577057 if only att would get on board for jelly bean. But no way will the s2 of any variety will see 5.0 officially
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app

Yeah I very much doubt. Upgrade time coming up anyway! But happy with task650 4.2.2 as always

I know there are some that are hopeful for possible some unofficial ports of 5.0 coming to the GSII, but it's time to let go. I know that not everyone has a budget to replace their phone every 2 years, but you have to keep in mind that things change. Our phone (the I9100 + variants) has been a solid rock from the start, but android is increasing at a very fast rate. And it is also becoming very mature, with that. GB was very slim compared to what JB has added to the system. Ram usage has gone up ~50% from what I've noticed. Our phone only has 1gig of ram, I highly doubt Keylime pie would run as effectively as GB or ICS has. I've noticed some instances in JB already where lack of ram has caused hindrances. Nothing big, but it's there.

Go speculate in the GS3 forum if you want, this is the GS2 forum

But we should note that, although galaxy s3 and note 2 will get the key lime pie, when will the klp release?According to the present condition, I think we cannot see the real android 5.0 in a short time.

If it's anything like the Captivate, we'll get the update via Carrier after a long delay, but custom ROMs will have it not long after it appears for the international SGS2.
Go figure....lol

why ask when you know the answer - lol
Being that ICS hasn't even been released yet, means the manufacturers dont have the code to make it work on the phone. Which means we are probably 8-12 months away from seeing a "leaked" ICS.
Who knows. If the phone hardware is similar, we might get an early release of ICS based on the Nexus Prime version.
LOL your right but who knows ICS is designed for dual core hardware so we might get lucky lets just see.........

Looks like ICS is a 3 button lay out from what the video shows on the Galaxy Nexus.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
(dates are approximate, based solely on my fuzzy memory)
If the history of the Captivate can be a guide:
AOSP Froyo was released in about July(?) of last year, I9000 Froyo and leaked versions of Froyo for Captivate started appearing around October, official AT&T UCKB1 Froyo dropped in late February. So, about 8 months for official Froyo.
AOSP GB was released in about Feb., Samsung I9000 custom ROMs appeared around May, and official AT&T Captivate GB still has not been released nor has any definite timeline even been announced. 2011 was all that was given in a press release a few months back, but 8 months would put it around Dec/Jan.
But the I777 AT&T SGS II deviates less from the international SGSII though, which *might* make it easier/simpler for Samsung and AT&T to shorten the development cycle. Captivate had stuff like the Audience chip that the international I9000 didn't, and omittted stuff like the front-facing camera, flash, and FM radio. SGSII also has less bloat that needs to be updated.
We'll just have to see how much faster the development cycle is, if it's improved at all.

[ROM_LEAK] AT&T Skyrocket ICS leaked (Same chipset as Note?) [DEVS ONLY] get it here
Not sure where to post this, but as it's ROM related with sources I'm hoping here is the best place.
ICS for Skyrocket ROM leaked, which has to be extremely close to the same code base for the Note's LTE QComm Snapdragon S3 chipset.
Is this something our ROM devs can use for a solid ICS foundation for our Note? If not please forgive my mistake, just trying to help out...
DL from my mirror here
Original source info http://rootzwiki.com/topic/21384-ics-leak-for-att-skyrocket-4g/
Yeah I was reading about this in the Skyrocket forum last night or this morning and was quite excited hopefully we can make something of it and i have no problem donating webspace/storage and money to help out devs.
Belongs in general but thanks for the link
Thanks let see of devs can make this work for the note

leak is cool . but we need kernel source if we intend to port their base to ours so it would be a kernel dev 's work ..
I m thining we ll have a leak soon .. if ics got leaked for skyrocket it certainly exists somewhere for the note .. just need to be patient
Just as well, AT&T released a list of phones that would receive the ICS update. The Note was on it as well as the Skyrocket. All of this bodes well, and further suggest what i was the first to say. We'll get ICS shortly after its released for the international note, the Angry Birds Space app would be a new app....not an update to an existing app like some suggested (this made absolutely no sense to me) and that the premium suite would be a host of s-pen apps and updates (i stated all of this before the video was even close to being released. Im on a roll!!

These comments are the antithesis of Dev only^^
On topic: we won't be able to get it booting without a kernel as said previously. And without source out a hacked one would be a mangled **** show so for now we have to wait.
If your interested though gb skyrocket roms boot with one of our kernels. We still needs a new one but it would be something to work on till we get source or a leak
T-mobile galaxy s2 boots with the skyrocket kernel...anybody willing to softbrick to try it out?
I have on my my t989 and my galaxy note. I'm using the galaxy note as my daily driver, but the t989 has the leaked skyrocket rom on it, so there are some things missing. I don't want to rely on it if I bork my note and don't have time to fix it. My Gnex is at home too...otherwise I'd just do it and see how it goes!

Not running Saurom myself right now, but from a GB perspective, I could not agree more. What makes the device great is the device itself. To me, ICS is an A while GB is a B+ at absolute worst, so like you, I will gladly wait.

This far the EU bug is only an "ICS thing".
???
Through CyanogenMod and other Dev we will get 4.2 and 5 as well, possibly 6, but not sure about 7 (it depends on if we get to Android 7 before the world ends due to countries going to war over lack of natural resources and nuclear war ensues). I'll let you know in about 5 years time if I'm not glowing green due to radiation.
The Nexus S have been confirmed by a Google Dev it won't get official 4.2 though.

I think with Vibrant we're going to see all Android versions until:
- Developers loose interest
- Hardware requirements make the new versions not feasible.
The level of stability and battery we have with JB is simply amazing for how old the phone is. You can buy a brand new battery and extend life cycle easily for another year with this phone.
That is true I'm amazed the vibrant made it this far lol
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Maybe because the nexus s has the same hardware for the most part and it is getting these updates officially and it gets ported over. That's why I've always thought it made it this far. Just my thought lol.

? Hmmm I don't know, maybe because it's not carrier branded, a clean-slate version of Android, and significantly cheaper to buy off-contract... Seems to me like there's still plenty of incentive to buy the N4 regardless if the OG has JB or not.
Whatever the reason, I really like this phone and am glad I bought it. However, unless things change before my contract is up, I'll avoid LG like the plague when choosing my next device. There is no reason anyone can give to me...to me... not anyone else, that in my mind justifies this piece of hardware not having official JB released for it by now. The work the developers are doing with one hand tied behind their back is awesome, but it shouldn't have to come to this. I'll vote with my dollars next time and go back to Samsung. It's a shame, too.
Like what has been mentioned and discussed ad nauseum since December, this device very well could have shipped with JB if they wanted it to. It most certainly could have been upgraded by now, especially with international versions of JB out. That tells me it is 100% AT&T who is holding this up.
Have a great weekend! Can't wait to see what the devs have cooked up!

ATT is probably too busy updating the note, note2, s3, one x, and all the other big selling devices. So jellybean will probably be the end of official updates for this phone.

In this case it's AT&T. If our developers can reverse engineer a hack to convert this to an N4, the mfg could have put JB on this device with the schematics and kernel files in their possession from day one. Personally, I don't think AT&T cares what devices are out, they make their money on contracts, not devices.

I personally don't agree with this.
The vast majority of consumers don't know what version of android is on what device.
They won't even know.
And it shouldn't matter what device people buy, as long as they extend their contracts.
Also, stock isn't too bad on this phone.
I seriously could not care less when we have a ROM that's pretty much exactly what the stock update is going to be with SnowJB. Plus we've got AOSP, AOKP, and CM10 on the way. Not to mention The Base and other ROMs I'm neglecting to mention. If you're on XDA you likely don't need an official Jellybean release. I'm not a huge fan of this news being posted all over. We have better updates than what will ever come out. Who cares?

Also, I know many out there hate stock with a passion. Let's keep this thread free of angry insults and hurled accusations. Thank ya much.

Cmon, buddy. Didn't you just ask to have a nearly identical thread closed?

Sprint is rolling out the 4.1 update to their LGOG now.

I care. Official release means official source. Snowjb is great but official release would be better

I thought they had 6 months to release official source once they put out an update...

This one was meant to be more of a joke thread, as I stated earlier. I was being sarcastic. I was poking fun at the earlier thread.

... And wasn't there a problem with the source code being released in a manner that was difficult to work with?

I personally don't agree with this.
The vast majority of consumers don't know what version of android is on what device.
They won't even know.
And it shouldn't matter what device people buy, as long as they extend their contracts.
Also, stock isn't too bad on this phone.

I don't know any android user that doesn't know what version of android is on their device. I can think of atleast 20 people. Most people are educated enough these days to know what they have and what newer version is out. They may not know how to root or modify like my sister but she does know when her iPhone doesn't have the newest iOS.

Then it seems most of my acquaintances... are not super bright.
But in all honesty, the everyday consumer really doesn't know. With Android so fragmented and most devices hardly receiving updates, I can think of a lot of people I know that don't know. They aren't tech people, they just want a smartphone.
I've had to walk friends through getting to the about phone settings just so they could find out what version they were on.
On iOS devices, everybody (or just about) has the latest update available to them; and even then, they really don't know what the hell is going on.
It is amazing how many people out there don't know much of anything about technology, and have no idea what their devices are capable of.
who needs att to release jb when snowjb is already here and its wonderfully debloated!

The fact that sprint is releasing right now but it seems that att isn't even close has me fuming. I know there are great releases out there but I'm just mad because it seems that att doesn't care at all

How long did it take att to release an update for the LG Thrill? That might be a good guesstimate for the Optimus G...
Took them 8 mo from the release of the one x (July to march) for this JB.
I also like to use my Inspire as an example. Promised Jellybean, and it was a giant no-show. Thank god for our Devs.

Funny thing is, neither AT&T nor HTC said ICS was coming to the Inspire, only HTC said it then retracted it for the Desire HD, international version.
Such a mess these updates are.

It's clear from what we've seen from other carriers around the world, that the lack of official Jellybean is totally on AT&T. I love this phone, but it looks like the only way to keep current is to depend on our devs and with brand new shiny coming out very soon I suspect we will lose quite a few of them. I realize brand new shiny phones are always coming out, but the next crop of devices are slated to be real power houses.

I do...I'm over flashing ROM's that have half working features or the occasional bug that causes my phone to reboot in the middle of a game or phone call.
