Strange Lag After ROM Update - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I updated a ROM and my phone started lagging for no reason. I did a mega wipe and fresh installed the ROM and there is still lag. I even mega wiped and tried another ROM but I'm still getting lag. It usually happens when you open up apps or go into the settings. I'm not too sure what is happening. On stock kernel the lag is even worse and I haven't touched anything. It's a clean install. What could be the problem? Does anyone know? I can't see anything running in the background that might be causing it and I definitely installed the ROM in the right way.

R: Strange Lag After ROM Update
Woah...weird... it might be the kernel, try a good one(siyah) but most likely it is the rom's fault...
Which rom are you using?
Remember the s3 does lag once in a while(often for some) if you do not tweak it and take care of it...though custom roms usually fix 50% of this problem because they remove bloatware and unnecessary processes running in the background.
also the touchwiz launcher is a heavy one...might try a different one...

I was using Anono Rom v24 and I had to switch to another kernel to get it it to run smooth but the lag is there when you open apps. The same goes for Android Revolution. I've tried using Perseus and Boeffla but still laggy as hell.

R: Strange Lag After ROM Update
Siyah kernel is good man, use that. As for lag reduction i suggest rootbox(light rom) or jellybam(good rom) or foxhound(good as well but heavy).
Then check on the cpu with cpu master app and try to play with tweaks until u get smooth android experience (thats what i did....dont forget to do nanadroid backups every once in a while...)

Thanks. I'll try your suggestions.

[Q[ ram always high and phone is laggy

hi guys,
I got my S3 about 3 weeks ago, (a noob in android) i recently flashed the rom to an unbranded version because i hate the bloatware but one thing i noticed is that my ram is really high on the device and when scrolling through the homescreens there's sometimes a delay in response or goes to the next screen with lag. when i go to task manager my ram is always above 500mb of 779mb. Even when i clear the memory it goes down to about 400 but then comes back up.
what could be the issue. don't really have anything running in the background. i did download go keyboard and go sms pro but I'm pretty sure that is not the cause of it. it even happened when i had the branded version of the firmware installed.
any ideas?
Thanks
Go software is very laggy. But yeah I have very few running processes and have high ram usage. I don't know why. It was the same with my s2. But I'm not sure y your laggy. Mines a beast
Wipe cache?
it I do ever get laggy I just hold home button and swipe to end background running processes
Hope this helps mate.

thanks for your response mate,
Ive tried wiping cache stopping useless processes but even after that its still quite laggy and when i swipe to remove that even lags... pretty bizzare
RAM usage is supposed to be high. Please read the link in my signature. The lag must be something else. Possible drawing issue on whatever launcher you have.

The GPU may not be very good on the sIII, the GPU controls video, scrolling, animations, ect. But my guess would be that its just a badly coded ROM. Go on the forms for that ROM and see if its a common issue.

thanks that actually makes sense about the ram, however its a stock touchwiz launcher would that make any difference? but yea its possibly drawin issues... anything to solve this with?
Did u have problems before you flashed a new Rom? Did u flash a stock unbranded Rom? Or a custom Rom?

It was a bit laggy with the initial rom with the flashing that's why I flashed it with a unbranded rom

Honestly don't know mate..
Could you perhaps be looking for fault. I mean have you come from another high quality phone. I haven't had any problems so far. I have not heard anyone with the stock Rom having problems.. obviously it's gonna have some bugs. But I haven't heard of this one mate. This is the fastest phone I've had.
Try Google it..
Sorry I couldn't help mate

Have you tried:
Setting animation speed to 0.5 from 1.0 in settings/ development?
Enabling gpu rendering?
Setting maxheapsize=128 mb (from 256 mb) in build. prop?
Clear both caches, reset permissions, reboot
Also, removing all bloatware helps

you need to be rooted, edit /system/build.prop using root explorer or es explorer (the /system file system needs to be mounted read/write first)
you have to reset permissions from cwm (clockworkmod), again this needs root

So I restarted the phone again and it didn't give the problem again and the movement does seem much better now thanks for that. I so know it comes to my next question that when you I exit an app the home screen redraw, and this is why I'm wondering why is my ram usage so high when I'm not using much I can the background or not using any launchers. I'm using beautiful widgets super clock screencast button and spanner month with a live background surely those can't use up 500mb ram can it?

Home Dcreen Lag

Anybody found any lag while switching back to home screen from the browser. Sometime there is lag sometimes no lag... When its laggin..the weather widget will come then the icons.. its frustrating to see this lag on S3,which is the most powerful phone till date. I have tried switching s-voice off and lower the transition to 0.5

Sorry for the spelling error.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
That's the launcher redrawing itself.
Basically because of heavy amount of RAM used by Android, it kills some of the other processes including launcher.
Even I get it and I hate hate HATE it.
There are some solutions but it will require root and it's not very simple.
It's embarrassing to be honest.
Yep I get that too, still Samsung seem to think that the amount of ram the s3 has is sufficient!

Just locking Launcher in memory or Reducing the OOM priority will fix it. Why is Samsung not fixing it.
If I'm not wrong, the JB leaks doesn't fix it either. The only gripe I have about this phone.
iOS get this right, unfortunately.
Dialer App has the worst lag. contacts take ages to come up. its horrible

I'm almost certain it doesn't occur in the latest jelly bean leaks - so I'd recommend either updating to one of them or just patiently wait for the official release

Really JB solves this?? Hey man I have unrooted phone... there are so many JB thread.. can u guide me which one to flash(the one which is most stable).. and before that I also need to root my phone... can u give me the link to CF root or any other... I am on Baseband version DDLH1
On JB I don't have any home screen redraw using Nova Launcher (I had on ICS). Don't know if it still happens with Touchwiz.

Well I can assure you it occurs a lot less (i used to be really annoyed by it on ICS - I'm using LI5 right now and haven't noticed a redraw yet).
You don't need to be rooted if you don't want to be. All you need to do is head here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835931 This is the latest LI7 JB leak, flash through Odin (follow instructions on first page) and all should work fine from then on (assuming you have the international galaxy s3).
Please note I think you will lose your data - in that case you may want to be rooted first so you back up your data and then flash the LI7 rom and then restore the data (for apps and games only). In this case just find the cfroot for Galaxy S3 and flash the latest cfroot kernel via Odin (then back up using titanium backup or other app from the playstore).

Multitasking on my S3

Im using WAZE as my main GPS software and my problem with it is when I want to multitask by going to TuneInRadio or Chrome,
after a few seconds Waze stops and I have to start waze again, instead of just going to the window I was in.
I was told Samsung kills softwares after you are not using them, but is there a way to disallow this? I want to define that nothing kills waze but me, when exiting.
Any ideas?
If your phone are not rooted, nothing much you can do other than disabled some bloatwares.

I was gonna wait for OTA JB, but now Im gonna upgrade to JB and flash this rom when I get the chance.
Thanks.
any Fc with the following mod given above???
I'm not too keen on that mod at all. Rom got noticeably slower using it. I just flashed Foxhound Rom Essentials (Stripped down JB Rom), flashed latest siyah kernel and left it there. Very smooth and apps don't tend to close. I can use Dolphin Browser with Co Pilot in the background and Poweramp running. Go SMS was also in memory as was Whatsapp.

I use Waze too and I don´t have this problem on ICS Stock Rom.. I can switch between app and Waze keep tracking in background.
For my experience Chrome consume a LOT of Ram but it the best browser I can´t switch to another..

[Q] phone hanging for no reason

Well, after using the revolt for a while now, my sgs2 has been randomly hanging for no reason. What could be the cause?

Yup i experienced this issue since about one week, every day it froze once. Problem is i always make changes, update apps and such. Change launcher settings, add widgets.
I read some people were complaining about recent Dolphin updates restarting sgs2.
Maybe go launcher ex has probles too, i unticked prevent force close.
Maybe battery widget is making problems. I used one that checked battery health and could also say how much time it had left. I changed that one to one that doesnt constantly measure it. Phone didnt freeze since then. (Only one, two days now)

I don't know what revolt is, but i gave you some examples, of what might have caused it for me, though i can't be sure it won't happen again, it's too soon. I'll report if it hapens again and i do solve it sometime, if i'm sure what the problem was. For now i think it was the battery widget.
Asuming, it worked before and its not a rom or kernel issue, try to think what apps might cause this and make a post when you solved it.

Well, I used the rom for about 2-3 days, no problem. After that i did install one game... so I uninstalled it. I'll see again if my phone will hang. If it does not then I'm pretty sure its the game's fault. Because it hanged two times in a single day

I can confirm, that as soon as i uninstalled the battery widget, and replaced it, it stopped freezing, must be my roms or kernels fault, cause that widget was installed 5 mil.+ times...

Galaxy s2 overheats on cm10.1?

Whenever i flash a cm10.1 rom, the phone heats up a lot faster than stock rom near the camera(where the cpu is) ...anyone knows why this happens? Already tried tracking apps that might be using the cpu but there are nome. When playing games it gets considerably hotter on cm for some reason
The same with me,also heats up with cm10.2 and ICS...Five minutes online and it becames a bakery. The device is coolest with Jb & Resurrection Remix.
