[Q] Flahing roms - HTC Droid DNA

Well, had my thinderbolt for 2 years and am extremely proficient with it thanks to the Devs making things easy for us. But now I have the DNA and Ive noticed all the roms and themes need to be done through adb. Im not real familiar with adb, is there a reason most of these mods are done thru adb and not just flashed from recovery as an apk file?

Most things are done through recovery. Radio's and hboots have to be done through fastboot. But roms are done through recovery, if your s off kernels are done through recovery and mods are through recovery.

I think what he's referring to is that if you are not S-off, you will need to use fastboot to flash the kernels that may be included with a rom as opposed to having the ability to just flash them all together in recovery. But they have S-off for the DNA, so if you go through the S-off process, you shouldn't need to do anything in ADB or Fastboot really.

I am s on an flash all the time using flash image gui. It works great

Go s-off your phone, it's in original android devolopment. It's fairly simple and you can just flash the zip in recovery and it's much easier.

Flashing questions.

I'm anxious to get some time running but need some more info. I'm coming from a Droid x and flashing find was cake but the bolt has me a little hesitant with hboot , fast boot and clock work.
I'm comfortable with clockwork but the hboot and fastboot is unfamiliar. When flashing a Rom I do this the typical way through clockwork, and from my understanding this does NOT include a new kernel. Correct?
In order to flash the kernel I need to download a kernel place it in root of my sdcard rename it to PG05IMG.zip and reboot to hboot which will flash the kernel. Correct? Or push the boot.img via adb. Correct?
Also if there are problems with the kernel will a restore , restore the kernel that the backup was made with or do you need to flash the stock kernel?
I don't have access to the dev forum yet. Thanks for the help guys.

[Q] Is it possible to flash a kernel from fastboot?

I'm trying to install bcblend on my evo, but I'm dealing with the 1.50 hboot, so even though my phone is rooted (currently running Eternity 1.2.2), evidently I can't flash a kernel from recovery. Can I do it from fastboot? If so, what would the command be? I can't quite suss it out myself...my windows command line skills are weak.

need either s-off or htc unlock method to flash kernels.
if using fastboot to boot the recovery and then flashing kernels from there doesnt work, the only other options i've seen for htc unlocked s-on devices would be to fastboot flash the kernel .img .. downside is you'll have to manually load the modules.
from all the posts, seems fastboot boot recovery and loading a kernel from that fastboot boot'd recovery should work.
keep in mind, you'll always have to fastboot boot recovery.img while using htc's unlock method if you want to flash kernels or ROMs which contain kernels. this is due to a limitation in htc's unlock method not allowing the boot (kernel) partition to be flashed from standard recovery mode.

Exactly...fastboot into recovery and you can flash whatever you like....works like a charm.
The method posted in post #2 was the method I had originally used - I did the HTC unlock, then followed the directions. I was able to flash a ROM, which is great - the ROM I'm using is snappier than stock, and the battery life is significantly better, but I was hoping to be able to flash custom kernels as well. If I can't, it's not the biggest deal in the world (pretty much the definition of 1st world problems), but it's frustrating. Step by step, I had done exactly what that said to do.
Ah well...not to be with this phone, unless someone figures out another way to get around the 1.50 hboot. Thanks, guys.
+1 for fastboot. Launch your recovery via fastboot and flash whatever kernel you want.

Cant seem to be able to flash AOSP Roms

Please don't flame me for asking, but i couldn't find instructions anywhere. I know if your s-on and want to flash aosp roms you need to flash the boot img via fast boot. I just cant seem to do it right and end up in the splash screen indefinitely. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
This thread helped me resolve the same issue.

Do you flash the rom first and then the fastboot boot.img, or the other way around?

I flashed the boot.img after I installed the rom. I'm not sure if that was the correct way, but it worked for me.
A very simple solution is to download Flash Image GUI, and use it to flash the kernel of the Rom while your phone is still booted and functional. You can do this by opening the app and locating the Rom file, then hit yes to install it to the partition. After extracted, boot into recovery, do your wipes, and flash the AOSP rom. This saves the need for a computer.
Another thing to try is to boot into recovery, flash the rom, let it boot to the boot animation, hard reboot into recovery, and reflash. (This works with Sense roms, but I haven't tried it with AOSP roms yet)
P.S.: I am S-On also
When I was s-on I would flash the rom then boot straight to bootloader, fastboot. USB and flash the boot img. This method always worked for me

Thanks for the help. I found that flashing the boot.IMG first then the ROM works good for me. But I will try the GUI app

The GUI application works as advertised but it's handy to be used to using fastboot also. Never know when your gonna need it

After S-OFF how do i gain root?

Hello everyone i'm sorry if this question has been asked already, but at the moment I am S-OFF.Rebooted to bootloader and it says "UNLOCKED" in pink letters ,and S-off in green letter .Anyways thats not the point,i thought by using the Revone method we would have root. I'm I missing a step that I have to do to gain root access ? && i apologize in advance if this question annoys anyone because it's been asked before
EDIT: I'm sorry guys i figured it out..
I see you figured it out which is awesome but for others who has this issue you'll have to either flash a custom recovery like CWM and flash Superuser & Busybox or you can push those files with ADB but since you are rooting more than likely you are flashing custom roms so flash recovery then flash your new Rom and more than likely it'll already be rooted.
fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilename.img while your phone is in fastboot to flash recovery you've downloaded and if you are in linux you must use root to flash it so either su first or sudo for ubuntu.

I was actually looking for this answer too, since I used the revone method as well.
I flashed a Rom that was rooted, so I'm guessing that if I remove the Rom, or go back to stock, I would be unrooted? How do I go about rooting my phone. I see you mention making a recovery. I pushed a cwm recovery to my phone via fastboot, and I have adb, so what would be the best method for me? Thanks.
Locate a su.zip known to work on the DNA and flash through recovery. The recovery version I flashed actually provided root access

Or go to the development forum where there is a guide for what to do after revone

First time root, need help!

So I already had an HTC Rezound for a year and was too afraid to root-so I bought an already rooted rezound from eBay that came with a 16 gig recovery sd card. I don't know what to do or how to flash a Rom or what I should do as a root noob... Can I please get some guidance from an experienced person?

Any idea what's on it now? Check the rom info in Settings, About Phone.
Also power it off, pull the battery, put it back in and turn the phone back on while holding Volume down, that'll get you the bootloader. See what version you have and if it's s-on or s-off.
From there you can select Recovery on the menu and boot into it, see what recovery you have.
Let us know and we can go from there.

You are already unlocked and have Amon Ra recovery installed, the "hard" stuff is done (actually it's not hard), and FYI you are S-ON... You are pretty good to go for any ICS based ROM. If you want to move into JellyBean or KitKat based ROMs you should switch to TWRP or CWM Recovery. Other than that, your good to go.
Ok, thanks a bunch! Ive done tons of reading about flashing roms and am still a little weary about the actual process. Ive read that a computer is needed in some cases but in others people are switching roms right from their phone- whats the safest or correct way to do it?

Although there are ways around it (that I don't recommend, mind you) the rule of thumb is based on whether you are S-ON or S-OFF...
When S-ON, a computer has to be involved so that the boot.img can be loaded... you must either: A) flash the boot.img manually with fastboot after flashing the ROM in recovery, or B) boot the recovery image file with fastboot and flash the ROM file
When S-OFF, no computer is required, all partitions of the phone are writable by recovery directly.

Don't forget you can use the phone (or a computer) to pack the boot.img into a PH98IMG.zip. As long as it boots, that is.
Hi All,
I am also new at rooting the Rezound and I'm having trouble. I did quite a bit of reading and followed the instructions here: theunlockr.com/2012/08/24/how-to-root-the-htc-rezound-video/
Apparently this was for an older version because I can't install ClockworkMod Recovery ("an error occurred ..."). I read that getting a backup of ClockworkMod Recovery was the best thing to do before installing any ROMs. Is that really necessary? It seems like I could always find an RUU on this site and flash back to ICS if I wanted to right?
Can some one point me in the right direction for what I should do next? Basically all I want to do is flash a ROM on my Rezound that will enable me to use it as a wall controller for my home automation system. So, ideally I'd like to remove the swipe to unlock feature (just be able to press the power button to get to the home screen) and to be able to force a nightly reboot with Tasker and remove as much bloatware as possible. This device is connected to my home network through wifi only. Any ideas what the best ROM would be for that?
By the way my recovery screen looks like undeadking's. I have S-On.
Thanks!

Easiest way to get where you want is to HTC unlock if not already done,
S-0ff with RumRunner, then follow this thread with all its great stuff:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2509770
You will end up with newest radios that are best for newer stock and custom roms.
There are several daily-user type custom roms mentioned in Development.
After you read a little about each, you'll know what you want to try first.
I like the custom Sense roms for best battery life.

Thanks, I was able to get my ROM working. The problem I was having was I was still S-ON. I was a little leery about turning it off so I found instructions for flashing with it still on here: androidforums.com/rezound-all-things-root/499172-how-manually-flash-roms.html
I installed the LiquidSmooth ROM and I was able to disable the lock screen. Thanks again.

There are ways using terminal emulator with an s-on device alongside using a proper busybox installation to flash without using a pc and no fastboot/hboot access is needed. flashing a boot.img while in rom, rebooting to recovery and finish installing the matching rom by flashing its zip.

the one big issue you need to worry about while being s-on is if you soft brick while s-on there is absolutely almost no fix...with s-off you con ruu.exe to safely restore your phone which you cannot do while s-on....if you plan on flashing custom roms alot than i HIGHLY suggest going s-off or you'll regret not doing so when that time comes

I second this... S-Off is highly recommended, it might not seem necessary now, but when something goes wrong, you will be glad you did it.
Thank you both. I had not read that before. I guess I will be performing the S-Off after all.
