Flashing questions. - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm anxious to get some time running but need some more info. I'm coming from a Droid x and flashing find was cake but the bolt has me a little hesitant with hboot , fast boot and clock work.
I'm comfortable with clockwork but the hboot and fastboot is unfamiliar. When flashing a Rom I do this the typical way through clockwork, and from my understanding this does NOT include a new kernel. Correct?
In order to flash the kernel I need to download a kernel place it in root of my sdcard rename it to PG05IMG.zip and reboot to hboot which will flash the kernel. Correct? Or push the boot.img via adb. Correct?
Also if there are problems with the kernel will a restore , restore the kernel that the backup was made with or do you need to flash the stock kernel?
I don't have access to the dev forum yet. Thanks for the help guys.

Flashing with s-on hboot 1.5 Kernels

I understand there is a lot of posts that address this issue, but there is so much conflicting information, I get that you need to flash the kernel otherwise it goes into a boot loop, so where do you get the kernel to match the rom, If i see a rom i like on the board and I download it how do i know what kernel it needs, is it separate than the rom, I understand how to flash the kernel just not where to get it, or how.
I fought with that issue too, but in the end the scary "wire trick" was well worth the 35min to S-off. Though I do think there should be a better guide with pictures, and graphs, maybe in crayon, for users like me who keep messing it up. >

The kernel is included in the zip if the Rom. Open the zip file and look for boot.img. That is the kernel.

Just downgrade, its not that hard to do so.

I'm hboot 1.5 (too lazy to downgrade). You have to flash the boot.IMG in the Rom that you want to flash. The boot.IMG is the kernel. You can also manually boot the recovery IMG through fastboot, which allows you to flash kernels.
so, if I download a kernel, flash through recovery then flash the boot.img from the rom, it unflashes my kernel? Im so confused about all this.
If I get a bootloop, can i flash rom, than kernel, than if no boot flash boot.img?

I believe so and I believe so. A Rom will flash it's boot.img if you are s-off, but if you are s-on you have to flash it separately. You can use fastboot, flash image gui, or use 4ext Smart Flash.

Max Lee has a good guide here.... http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-h...c-evo-3d-using-wire-trick-juopunutbear-s-off/
He explains everything step by step with pics...In crayon, no need to worry with that guide.
Along the same lines, say I'm Juopunutbear s-off, how would I go about getting my original hboot (1.5) and s-on again? All I can find is how to relock through fastboot.

Getting a boot image

Well I'm officially done trying to get S-OFF I ave tried everything, I am just wondering if there is a ROM I want to use and there is no boot image OR (PH98IMG) because its for S-OFF only, Is there a way I can creat one for the rom or does it have to be done by the dev that created the ROM.

It will be in the ROM zip. Just extract it on your comp and then flash it. S-off roms all have a boot.img, but you only need to push it (or flash the ph) if you're s-on.

Nils has an aroma installer that will give you the option of flashing the kernel by recovery or bootloader. Or like wasabi said you can extract the boot.img from the rom and flash it via fastboot.

Root and ROM installation Question

Ok so I used to have a rezound with an unlocked bootloader and the ViperRez Rom installed on it. I upgraded to a Galaxy S3 and sold my Rezound. A week or so ago my S3 took a crap so I purchased another Rezound off Craigslist. I want to gain root again and install a stable Rom. Can someone point me toward a guide that can walk me through this? I wasn't sure if the guides I have been reading were for a rezound that was still running gingerbread or ics or if the guide would apply to a rezound that was running either one. Also, if anyone can recommend a very stable rom I could install that would be great. I'm also tempted to try the trick to gain s-off but I'm a lil afraid to do that. I read somewhere that a paperclip can be used in place of the wire. Is this true? If so, ill give it a shot. I know a lot of members hate posts like this so I apologize in advance. I don't wish to ruin ur day. I'm not looking for anyone to hold my through this just point me in the right direction for root instructions and recommend a good Rom. Thanks everyone!!!

The unlock process via the htcdev.com website is still the same. If you're just going to replace the factory rom, unlock your phone, flash a custom recovery (TWRP, Amon-Ra or CWM) then the rom of your choice.

Recovery - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19205213&postcount=428
List of roms - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1425091
For the recovery install, download the PH98IMG.zip attached to the post above, stick it on the root of your sd card, power off your phone, pull the battery and stick it back in, power the phone back up while holding the volume down button to get into the bootloader, press power again then volume up when prompted to install the recovery.img then reboot.
Remove the PH98IMG.zip image immediately from your sd card's root, download the rom of your choice, boot back into the bootloader using the process above then select recovery to get into Amon-Ra and install your rom.
The one issue you will have with being s-on is you need to flash your kernel using your pc via fastboot, you can reboot into the bootloader from Amon-Ra and flash the boot.img you extracted from the rom download zip.
fastboot flash boot path/to/boot.img
Enjoy.
Thank u! I think the kernal part is where i would have gotten screwed up. So I download the Rom of my choice and open the zip file, remove the boot.img, put it on the root of my sd card, and then do I flash the Rom first or the boot.img? Also I remember having issues doing this before where I kept being prompted to.install the boot.img in the bootloader screen. After I install the boot.img how do I remove it from my sd card so it will stop asking me if I want to install it? Thx again!!

You put the boot.img on your PC so you can use ADB/fastboot to flash it to the phone.
You're confusing that with installing a kernel using a PH98IMG.zip file. That will get picked up anytime you boot into the bootloader if it's sitting on your SD card. You can remove those using a file manager app to access the SD card or plug into your pc and mount the SD card.

Ok gotcha. It's all coming back to me. Last question...here are the pics of the software information for my phone. Having looked at that, do I need to do anything else before I start rooting and flashing? I keep reading about making sure I'm on the right RUU before I start flashing and wut not. Am I good?

should be good, if u want to makesure your up to date u could flash the global ruu, its over on Android police

Took ur advice and flashed that eclipticRez Rom. Glad I did. It's awesome. Good call on that. Did u choose Sense 4 in Aroma or a different launcher? I chose sense but I'm curious how the other launchers r.

[Q] Flahing roms

Well, had my thinderbolt for 2 years and am extremely proficient with it thanks to the Devs making things easy for us. But now I have the DNA and Ive noticed all the roms and themes need to be done through adb. Im not real familiar with adb, is there a reason most of these mods are done thru adb and not just flashed from recovery as an apk file?
Most things are done through recovery. Radio's and hboots have to be done through fastboot. But roms are done through recovery, if your s off kernels are done through recovery and mods are through recovery.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
I think what he's referring to is that if you are not S-off, you will need to use fastboot to flash the kernels that may be included with a rom as opposed to having the ability to just flash them all together in recovery. But they have S-off for the DNA, so if you go through the S-off process, you shouldn't need to do anything in ADB or Fastboot really.
I am s on an flash all the time using flash image gui. It works great

Go s-off your phone, it's in original android devolopment. It's fairly simple and you can just flash the zip in recovery and it's much easier.

[Q] Htc Question boot img help

One question so when flashing a boot.img I pull it from Rom and fastboot flash. My question is when I do recover flash after do I leave boot image in original zipped Rom folder and recovery flash, or is it not supposed to be in it at all, being I already flashed boot.img via fastboot?

You are probably on the latest firmware and flashed a 3.15 rom, my guess, you need then to flash a 3.16 sense rom, aosp and 3. 15 roms touch screen doesn't work with the newest firmware, if you are s-off you can downgrade it, if you are s-on I suggest you to go to the original development thread and get s-off using baby racoon if your hboot is 2.09... Good luck
