weird overheat issue - HTC Droid DNA

I was on set filming for a movie I'm in and I had set my phone down backstage and then after I was done for the day. I came back to it and it was very hot. I went to wifi tether because it has temperature on it and it was at 120 degrees. But I did nothing to it. I did realize my phone rebooted and automatically set it self to 1.9 gh performance governor. The screen was becoming less responsive and just shut off. I was scared to turn it back on. After a while it lowered temperature as I was driving home and it did turn back on. I am running latest sense 5 rom with beastmode latest.
What could have happened?

it depends on the condition that you had your handset. Was it laying on a desk on a speaker or some type of electrical equipment? also know that the kernels and roms are subject to flaws and bugs it may have been just a 1 time event. I would suggest using tuner to make sure that your kernel set on boot

[Q] Is battery temperature at 122°F bad?

I was playing Crusade of Destiny (full scale 3D single play RPG) while charging my phone and noticed the phone was feeling really really hot.
My phone is on Bionix 1.9.1 (OC/UV/VooDoo) and I used SetCPU to OC it to 1.2ghz.
Being me, I didn't want to melt my phone so I stopped playing and used SetCPU to check my battery temperate- low and behold, it was a little over 122°F. I went ahead and cooled the phone down asap by putting it in the freezer for a good minute or so and temperature went back down to 98°F.
My question is, at what limit should the temperature be at to insure myself that the phone will be okay?

I set up a profile on SetCPU so if my phone reaches ~120F it give me an audible warning and clocks it down to 800 max. I know some ppl have had problems with profiles, however, they work just fine for me. I have heard that the Vibrant will start getting screwy around 125F, so best to keep it under that.
Ah, didn't know I could set an audible warning with SetCPU.
Wow I was closing to screwing up my phone then. Scary.
A lot of people report it heating up like that when charging and using the phone at the same time. If it ever got that high, I think its common sense to stop playing or maybe close what your doing (3d games or something heavy on the processor) I personally never got past 120 F...
I'd at the very least not OC. That game runs well with the stock kernel and no lagfix

I would strongly suggest NOT putting your phone in the freezer. ESPECIALLY when its running hot. Sudden temperature changes tend to crack electronics.
If you're worried, unplug it from the charger and turn it off. Maybe take the battery out (carefully).

that's hot. my phone never gets past 110 when charging.

Other Battery problems...
I'm running 2.1 w/ one-click root and one click lag fix. I uninstalled ATK for the stock task manager set to strict, and I usually have wifi and gps. Ever since rooting and teh lag fix my battery has been hot battery is draining very quickly. Next thought is to just make the jump to 2.2. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
When I flashed to Project Core kernal 1.2 and severe heat problems. Especially when overclocked passed 1 ghz you're gonna have heat issues. I don't really use my phone as it charges and i kill tasks that are not in use. Currently I'm using project core kernal v1 1ghz and its working great for me.

[Careful] Charging your CM7 TP ... it may overheat!

I left my TP on and booted into Android last night as it was charging. When I picked it up this morning it was really HOT and overheated, so I'm thinking either turn it off when charging or boot into WebOS before while charging. It seems like its not shutting off the charger when it reaches 100%.
Good to know. Do you know if the developers know about this as a known bug? Please check the rootzwiki thread here:

Left mine plugged in repeatedly w/out issue the last two nights w/out any heat issues. I had my screen off profile in SetCPU set to 1080 max CPU speed.

I've got a case on mine so I might have not noticed if it was hot.
I've set the CPU to 1080 max aswell but can't overcome the sleep bug.
I'll take the case off tonight n test this.

I was hoping upping the minimum CPU setting to 384mhz would have helped the sleep bug, but it hasn't. That and the wifi bug are the only 2 annoyances, but considering the alpha state, its stellar. Doesn't even really bother me
Sleep bug only effects me when Touchpad is asleep with charger plugged in. When unplugged and left alone It always turns on fine. I tested it to make sure too. Im also Overclocking to 1.5 ghz with set cpu and minimum 384 mhz using OnDemand.

Heat issues

Background: cm7 nightly (6 when this happened)
So last night before I went to bed, my phone was really hot and according to z-device test, my phone was 36°C. Then in the morning, it took nearly a minute for my screen to turn on so i could stop my alarm and it was even hotter. Z-device test now said it was 50°C. Idk if that's accurate but it definitely felt well over 100° Fahrenheit. I put the screen on my face and it was almost unbearably hot. The I turned it off until it cooled off and it seemed okay the rest of the day. What could the problem be?

was the phone plugged into the charger? were you using it intensively on the charger right before you went to bed? do you have any profiles set (with setcpu or another program) that is forcing your phone to stay on high frequencies?
if it is fine now, then i wouldn't worry about it... chances are some app just caused you to use a lot of CPU, thereby making the phone hot. if it happens again, and you can't pinpoint a particular app as the culprit, i would try a battery pull, and if that doesn't work, maybe try a re-flash of CM7.
It was plugged in. And I had setcpu at 800-1200 because I heard that if the cup gets too low, the screen won't turn on... Also it was plugged into my Touchpad charger, and and since the Touchpad charger is like higher voltage or whatever, could that have affected it?
Btw, i uninstalled SetCPU since then.

yes, that is what is causing your heat issue. you should not do extremely intensive tasks (like game playing) while your phone is on the charger - your phone is receiving a lot of juice, and you are exerting a lot of juice at the same time - ends up in a bad (and hot) combination.
especially with the setcpu charging profile that you have set up... you aren't allowing your phone to get below 800 mhz while it is on the charger, so of course it is going to be excessively hot when charging, for the reason mentioned above. if you got rid of that profile (don't have to get rid of setcpu completely), and let the phone dictate the frequency it charges at (most likely 200 mhz, or even deep sleep), then your heat issues will be solved.
glad i could help.

If you limit max frequency to less than 800 on a stock kernel - you'll encounter SoD issues.
With a custom kernel that includes the SoD fix (nearly any custom kernel does), you're fine. I wouldn't set a limit to 200 max and do NOT use "Powersave" for screen off.
Which custom kernel? Ive never flashed kernels before... Do kernels come with Roms? Because I have cm7 nightly...

[Q] Ungodly Hot

So, tried about 4 different roms, flashed the latest firmware, tried about 3 different kernels & my phone is still getting exceptionally hot a matter of minutes with screen on. Screen off, cool as a cucumber. Screen on, hot as hell. Anybody have any indication as to what would be causing this? I just went to NuSense 6 RC 6.8. Firmware is 1.02.01.0818 & hboot is 1.57. Fully s-off & rooted. Didn't have heating issues with ViperDNA, just the worst battery life I think I've ever had on any of my phones. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Quite true, but I have mine set to auto brightness, being the fact that I'm moving from various lighting conditions. I've tried different kernels, to no avail.

Did it overheat when stock? Have you checked to see if something is running your CPU in the background?

That's the thing, I never really used it as I bought it on swappa as a replacement to my original (that I dropped & shattered the screen) Once I got it, went s-off & rooted, then VZW update went through & so did the phone (soft-bricked.) So, wiped everything out, installed Viper DNA 4.1.0 & never got hot, just battery life was pathetic (maybe 14 hours, if I was lucky, under light use.) I've tried cpu spying apps (if you can recommend any that I haven't tried, that would great.) So to answer your question: unknown on Stock, no on Viper, just bad battery life, hot on LiquidSmooth, hot on NuSense.
So going back to Viper is out of the question (error during installation.) So I've decided to go back to LiquidSmooth (love the look) & just deal with the heat until I can figure out what's causing the heat. Any recommendations to changing the battery out? I'm not opposed to that option.
I've done more testing & have come to a conclusion that my screen may be going bad. How did I come to this conclusion? Well, there are no rouge apps running in the background, phone itself doesn't get hot (namely the battery), & in long phonecalls with the screen off it's barely warm. Once screen goes on, boom, instant heater in about 5 minutes (and at lowest brightness setting.) Anyone think I'm right? Can a screen that gets hot like this be going bad?

Terrible battery life, tried everything I could think of

So first a little background on this phone: my girlfriend had been heavily using it for 2 years. Over time, the battery went bad. She would keep it always on charger when she's at home, so she can have a full battery when she goes to school. At one point, after over 1.5yr, the phone started behaving weird when connected to charger: it would be either discharging while on charger, or charging very slowly, like 5% in 2 hours, during which the phone is on standby, not being used.
I took the phone and flashed a CM11 nightly. Ever since then, the charging problem has been resolved. However, the phone has extremely poor battery life. I'm able to get maximum of 2 hours screen-on time.
- I have the Greenify app, and most of the apps are greenified, including keyboard even.
- I have data off at all times, and am using Tasker to turn it on only when certain apps are running. Turning the screen off or exiting the app disable data.
- Screen brightness is at 50%
- Maximum CPU frequency is lowered to 1000 MHz (min is at 200 MHz)
- CPU governor is ondemand
- I/O scheduler is CFQ
- The phone is running CM11 nightly from 16/02 with it's native kernel.
I have recently bought a battery which is claimed to be an original. I don't know if it is, is there a way to actually check it? The battery life has not improved in regard to the old battery, the one that came with the phone.
I have also tried Gustavo kernel, but for some odd reason the drain was like 1% every 2 minutes when on standby, so I restored the latest backup.
Maybe worth to mention is that I have a yellow-ish rectangle going over my screen. It's not really noticeable, only in apps with white background. The rectangle is located in the middle of the screen, goes from side to side, and takes ~1/3 of the screen vertically. I have no idea what is that, but the screen is okay. It's responsive and the colors are fine.
I have no idea with else I could do to improve my battery life. It's seriously awful.
I'm going to try and calibrate the battery using this app tonight, but I'm really not too optimistic.
Any tips?

These are common symptoms of a damaged usb port. It was the same with me, until i replaced the usb port. Now my S2 works, battery wise.

You should try different Roms like slimsaber 4.4.4 by fusionjack. I know i've said this particular line many times before (to others) but it has now become one of the first things I say. AFAIK, the last few cm11 night lies weren't particularly stable or battery friendly. You should try a custom ROM with a different custom kernel (i have noted that you've flashed gustavo kernel) like apolo kernel 7.2 beta 3 by pedestre or dorimanx 10.44 v008 by cybernetus.
