My s3 battery is awful! I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm not rooted, I have no roms and I run everything stock. Today I went to clinical at the hospital, I unplugged my phone at 6am, by 12pm my battery was less than 40%, by 2pm it was yellow. I used the phone for about 30 minutes throughout that time during my lunch period using Facebook and texting. Literally, only around 30 minutes of usage and this happens? The phone is only a few weeks old. It seems the major problem is maps. I always get messages that maps has unfortunately closed yet I've never once used maps, haha. I though updating it might help, to no avail. I took a screen shot of my battery stats, and at school maps was at 65% usage as opposed to the 54% as shown in the photo. Either way this is ridiculous, makes me regret getting this phone. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it or let me know if this is normal though surely it's not.

Also thought I might mention that the phone runs really hot just sitting in my pocket. Not sure why, and the 11 hour on time you see on the screen took 2 charges to get.

Turn off your gps and un install maps then reinstall.. Or go into application settings and clear maps data and cache.. I see that percentage is really high and abnormal..
Turn off your wifi while your out and about as well..

it also looks like your roaming? but yeah turn off gps and disable maps app or clear data and cache for it
Also go to Google settings and un tick most of the location settings including check ins and what ever else you don't like..

I've never have GPS on, ever, unless I want to use it. In which case I turn it off immediately. I just cleared the data and cache on maps. Also, my phone does state I'm roaming anytime I'm on not using 4g or 3g, data and wifi is usually off. In my notification bar it does shown the gps signal, but it's not actually using it, if it's using it it shows brs similar to the wifi indicator when it's in use. This is a weird tick with verizon. So I checked my location services and the only thing that was on was location history, which I went ahead and turned off. Will report back regarding battery life.

This obviously is not the norm as if it were, this forum would be flooded with posts about it. Does anybody have any ideas as to what is going on here?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated it, thank you.

Sounds like you've got an app that is causing 100% wake time.
Go to "Settings", then to "Battery & data manager", then "Battery Usage". It will show you what is using most of your battery.
Importantly, though, click on the time at the top of the screen (which tells you how long you have been on battery / off battery). This will bring up a screen that will show you things like the level of phone signal you are getting, and most importantly for you when your phone is "awake". If you see a mostly blue (or in your case, possibly all blue) bar there, then you've got something that's causing you problems.
Spare parts may be able to help you figure out what it is.
Thx jw, appreciate the help. Nothing worked though, Sprint is replacing the phone.
Sounds like either u have a bad battery or rogue app running... I had the same problem, I did a factory reset, but skipped setting up and social networks....today I had a hour of usage, and through 9 hours, had 77% battery left....big difference

I'm not certain if this is Motoblur or it was just changed from the last time I used Android, but there appears to be an option to only sync social network information when on Wifi.

No battery complaints from me!

battery is amazing for me. downloaded battery circle from market that shows true percentage of battery and when u pull down notification bar it will show something like "Discharging from 95% since 8 hrs" then underneath that it will say "voltage 3.78v // capacity at 47% since 11:16pm" or something along those lines. so in 8 hrs of medium use on 3g only i dropped half. not bad at all.
think u had a bad battery. also i honestly dont think you need juice defender with this phone. i let things sync all day whether 3g or wifi and i make it a full day easy.

Home Screen, slide it to the left. On that screen, shut down 4G, GPS, and Bluetooth if not using it. Even playing with mine (and I play hard) I'm about 30% loss every 4 hours. Im good for a day?
Also, remember if you have Facebook, Twitter, Google+.........the radio (3G or 4G) is constantly reaching out to them for updates!
I went this whole weekend from 8am to 11pm without charging, I played words with friends checked fb, texted and made calls and never needed my charger. I came from the evo and i would of had a dead phone at 4pm doing the same amount so i am impressed all the way
Got mine on Friday. Looking forward to the workday to test the battery during a normal routine. But yesterday, I gamed & messed with the phone for over 2 hours (out of 4 hours off uptime) & only dropped by 50%. I am happy with that.

Curious what everyone else has listed as cell standby percentage listed in battery usage. I just happened to look and mine is listed as 100% without signal even though I have had signal all along. I wonder if this could be a bug like the 50% without signal I experienced with my cappy.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
My cell standby is 6% currently
Mine is 21%, Android OS at 59%. Signal is constant yellow, which is odd since it was in decent signal much of that time.
Well that is weird, mine is reading 100%. I wonder what is going on.

OK me thinks maybe I wasn't clear in the OP. What I am talking about is when you bring up Battery Usage and then click on Cell Standby it then brings you to the break down of the Cell Standby. There you will see Time On as well as Time Without a Signal. In my case the Time Without a Signal is reading 100%. What is everyone elses reading?
Time without a signal: 31% - rather surprised it's that high
To the OP, I was just about to make a thread on this because I knew I couldn't be the only one with this problem. I've had this bug since day one, it always says 100% no cell service.

Nope, no Google Voice and my Time Without Signal is 100%.
maybe they miss word it. maybe it should have read "Time with Signal"... cuz I am on a Microcell... and I have signal alllll the time

It seems to be a known bug with the GS2. There are threads discussing it in the I9100 forums. Ever since I went into About Phone/Status my time without signal percentage has stayed St 0%. I guess it's kind of like the 50% bug with the GalaxyS1.

Checked my wife's SGSII tonight when she got home from work. Reported cell standby as 6% of battery use, and 0% time without signal. She has Google Voice installed as well.
A couple of maybe related items:
a) When we brought both devices home, hers connected to our MicroCell with no problems. Mine would not connect at all, until I did a sim swap with her device. After swapping back to our original sims, both connect to the MicroCell.
b) with very similar time off the charger today (me at 10 hours, her at almost 12) and similar screen on times (me: 1hr 27 min, her 1hr 11min) she had 60% battery remaining, I had 33%. I am running some additional apps, and used google nav for about 6 minutes. She was in wifi coverage all day (except while commuting) I had no wifi all day. Not sure if the battery burn difference is justified by those differences or not - or if they are possibly somewhat related to the 0 vs 100 time without signal indication (I was only showing 7% battery drain from the cell standby).
I too have the 100% "bug" I also read in the i900 threads that once we go to:
settings>about phone>status the "time without signal" percentage will begin to drop. I can confirm it. It's at 98% for me now. I seem to have pretty good battery life. About 16 hours on a single charge. I think its just a bug but makes me wonder if my battery life would last twice as long with "time without signal at 0%" I do not have google voice and all the apps and widgets I have that can be configured are set to sync manually (with the exception of the google apps) (auto sync is on).
Being there's so much difference in battery life, I was curious if there might be a bad batch of phones. My phone gets great life and my dad's gets significantly less. He works about 2 blocks away from me and actually has a stronger signal in his building than I do at mine and his battery drops like a rock with nothing running. I'm rooted and froze the AT&T bloat. He's stock.
My serial number contains a PTM and the end number is in the 40000's. His serial number contains PZK and ends in a number in the 30000's. If you have time post your serial # info and how your battery life is.
I returned my ladies OG and now her battery life is better. Even b4 I rooted it drain was better from prior phone. Could be a batch. That's my lead as well

I'm contemplating returning my phone just in case of a 'bad batch,' but I'm afraid I'll get a phone that's even worse lol. I can't forever replace phones. I'm just trying to make it work.

Resetting battery stats actually has no correlation with battery life whatsoever. It is not what controls the percentage that we see in screen. I believe it just tracks what apps or system files are or have been using up the battery. Battery stats gets an automatic reset whenever you reboot anyways.
For those with bad battery drain, just try and see what your serial numbers are n post it here to compare.

The battery life on my phone and seemingly most folks is great. Granted some folks probably live on the cusp of LTE coverage in their area and the radio is killing the battery while liking for signal (that happened to me with my EVO 4G).
If it were all devices, then only the battery life fanatics who shut down everything would be seeing 20hrs on a charge.
I think there's a bad batch of hardware or there.

seems odd that those who are having the issue are not likely to make to 10hrs on a charge (often 1/2 that)...while others are bumping 20hrs (myself included).
i have 4 emails on constant sync, as well as, facebook, weather, xda and a chess. each day has a couple hours of screen time. 1hr each day of either Pandora or Audible. 20-50 text and @45min - 1hr of phone time. ... in case you think i put my phone in my pocket and forget about it.
granted, i do connect to wifi at home and work. and i live in an area where i have solid LTE coverage at all times.

We got ours off the box. Not sure where you'd get it in the phone.
Did a little more research. Set them side by side for an hour with screens at same brightness, always on, with Nexus live wallpaper running. Both were hooked into wifi and the microcell. Battery usage over a 1 hour period was pretty much identical (within 1%). Then did some web browsing and hit all the same links and drain was the same. We thought it maybe was just battery conditioning. When I first got it I did 2 full drains and recharges with it off. He did that about a week in and thought it was fixed.
I left and a couple hours later his battery started to tank. Only thing we noticed was his accelerometer hung for some reason and had 5 hours on. He hadn't used anything that should have turned it on so no idea why it got stuck. Turned it off and the battery usage slowed to what one would expect. Then it had another couple minute burst of dropping. that was the last I heard.

This isn't your usual battery thread. My drain is MASSIVE. 25 percent in 2 hours just sitting with the screen locked. I am unlocked with TWRP. It started out of the blue, no new apps installed when it happened. I wiped cach/data and then had TWRP wipe the system partition. Then installed a clean ROM, Beans mostly stock ROM, the one I have been running since it came out with no problems. The massive battery drain continues. I have installed very few apps after flash, none of them are out of the ordinary. All data sync and app syn is off except Gmail.
The maps usage is weird, very high, I have gps turned off. But even the maps usage does not explain the rapid drop. Battery stats snapshot attached.
I am almost thinking my battery is just fried.

Have you checked to see if history is turned off? Maps will try to locate you based on cell signal if gps isnt available which would still drain your battery pretty fast if it was consistantly running in the background.
MAPS>>>SETTINGS>>>LOCATION SETTINGS
There you'll see options for location reporting, location sharing, location history, etc.

Still struggling, but getting info. Battery is on order, really hope that is it but I am not hopeful. It really appears my Google Maps is out of control. During the screen shots below the phone was 95 percent just sitting. I did a little twitter, couple of emails. Never opened maps, location history, sharing and gps was off the whole time. Stand alone gps in locations was off, google and vz locations were on.
In four hours with only a little twitter/gmail it dropped 40 percent. For 3.5 hours of that time it was in deep sleep. I am not seeing any wakelock issues, that is attached. As is the 'current' stats from BetterBatteryStats.
The main battery stats from Android say Maps is using a good deal of this battery. I have uninstalled maps updates and cleared data on it. Maybe it is looking high because the battery is fu'bard. The new one wont be here for a few days because of the holidays.
I may be out of touch for a couple of days. Time to put some miles on the bike.

I dont know if this would help....but with my last phone.. the gnex, I would go outside and get a solid gps lock then turn off gps. It would stop the constant searching for a lock and battery drain. If I never got that initial lock, even with gps off it would drain it but not really show up in a better battery stats as a problem....just had to do it every time phone was rebooted of course but not that much of a pain.

Because even though the GPS is turned off the apps still doesn't realize that when running in background mode. Its like it just never made the connection to GPS being turned off and stopping searching.
I've read about this quite a bit and it is just something to do with how Sammy phones communicate with Maps.

Try going to Maps in manage apps in settings and clear all data.
You could also uninstall maps and reinstall it. (Probably need to be rooted and use a something that will uninstall a system app like Rom Tool Box)

You could also uninstall maps and reinstall it. (Probably need to be rooted and use a something that will uninstall a system app like Rom Tool Box)

Tibu works for uninstalling Sys Apps as well.

Because even though the GPS is turned off the apps still doesn't realize that when running in background mode. Its like it just never made the connection to GPS being turned off and stopping searching.
I've read about this quite a bit and it is just something to do with how Sammy phones communicate with Maps.

I charge my phone to 100% nightly and in the morning wake up to around 94% battery left which is great. Last night however, I charged it to 100% but for whatever reason woke in the middle of the night and opened my phone to check the time (I have a QuickCircle cover) and it was dead. The battery was at 0%. When I went to sleep there was nothing running on the phone and the screen was off....how can I find out what caused this?
thanks,

I noticed something last night which got me a little paranoid, I killed all running apps and was in my home screen and even tho I didn't have anything running my data icon was spinning like crazy as if something was being downloaded or synced. I tried restarting my phone but nothing, I then tried killing most running processes but again nothing seemed to stop it.... I ended up taking out my battery and left my phone like that all night. I came here today to ask and talk about it and see if anyone else had this weird thing happen to them. I'm commenting on your post because I'm sure that if I would have left my phone on, the battery would have drained pretty quickly. So let me know if you notice some weird data activity going on on your device. Then again it could be just a coincidence.

hmmm, maybe something similar happened on mine and I didn't catch it. I noticed today that my contact pics I assigned to people are all wrong and they weren't yesterday. Seems like the phone had a major meltdown.....
Not sure if you can find out what caused exactly that, but you could try installing better battery stats & if it happens again, plus you can see what's using what.

Same thing here. I noticed my battery draining unusually fast.
Culprit: Connections Optimizer. Disable that thing.

I've learned ever since Sprint created that program that it causes more problems than it solves and have always left it off since my Galaxy S3.
My issue was Location Services. I did a test a few nights ago where I left my phone off the charger while I was sleeping. Went to bed at 100%, woke up to 100%. I used Greenify on some system apps including Location Services
Here's everything I greenified as well
I always disable connections optimizer. I think 6% is a little high for overnight loss. The g2 and g3 are 2 of the best phones as far a battery life at idle. My phone almost never drops a percent within the first 5 or so hours after charging unless I'm using it.
