can i root without having to flash a rom? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I get so confused when rooting and what not..so i thought I would come here before i screw something up. I just want to simply root my phone so that I can use wifi-tether and if I can avoid it.. I don't want to flash a rom or do anything else special besides rooting. Can I do this or do i have to flash a rom for the rooting process?

You don't need to root to use wifi-tether. Just download a tether toggle app from the play store. The toggle will bypass the subscription screen.

What he said. And yes you can root and stay stock. You'll then have root access if you ever decide to make any mods.

Yes. Search the dev thread for the keyword "engtools3.zip" My guess is it's in the same "One Click" thread referenced earlier.
That will not get you a good OC kernel, though. You might want to replace that (the boot partition) on your stock phone as well

Thanks I plan to ROM but first I would like to back up my ROM so I can put it back on if I would like

Installing apps then rooting

I have been installing a few apps and now im questioning if I am going to have to install these apps again after I root this phone? Those of you that have rooted your phone, have you have to install your apps again?
Thanks!
No.
From your question it would appear you are new to rooting. It does not mess with the installed apps; it provides more access to the OS so you can do more.

Rooting will only give root access, but changing the kernel will force you to format your phone?

will i get official updates after rooting?

I plan to buy s3 but i have a question in mind. I dont like to install custom roms and only need to root the s3 in order to install Titanium Backup Pro.So if i root it and not install custom recovery and no other mod just superuser and titanium backup pro will i be able to get fota update. And also can i easily unroot it and go back to as it was before?
Don't root, BUY the games, get updates.
Cracked games are bad mkay?

Edited due to Op editing his post, which originally stated he wanted to know if this would affect his use of cracked games!

Using cf.root you can keep the phone as close to stock as possible and have root, you can still get official updates through KIES but OTA downloaded updates seem to be giving ppl problems.
To slaphead20 and burden010 just cause the guy doesnt want custom roms doesnt mean hes cracking games or doing anything illegal. I only rooted my stock rom so I could fully use titanium backup and mybackup pro, plus custom roms arent that far from stock at the moment anyway so give the guy a break.
edit :- I see OP has edited his post maybe he did announce he was doing something wrong.

Thanks and im very sorry people. Will surely read the rules before posting.
If you have only a rooted stock Rom then you should be fine for receiving ota updates. Worst that might happen is you will loose root.

No. Once you're rooted, there are tools you can use to update ROMs without a computer, but you've got to at least have superuser access.
There's no way to gain that which doesn't require a computer.
I think he's on a rooted ROM already, hence why he's wanting to go back to stock rooted. Use mobile odin from the play store. There's many threads on how to use it, so search for one of those. I'd give you detailed instructions or link you to them, but I'm on my phone and not at home to get to the computer. Hope this helps

@HeyRobi: half True there's no native rooting or tethering yet (foxfi and custom roms work tho) but there's a thread under development section that can downgrade part of you and then root u then re upgrade u to custom rooted 4.4,2 not roms or there's nc5 prerooted roms to flash thru safestrap check out my thread if you have questions or concerns feel free to ask in the thread:fingers-crossed:

so I looked at your link and seems like some people are struggling so I haven't tried it yet. Are we any closer to a simple root. I don't necessarily need to install a recovery just want root. And by the way thanks for posting the link.

You may be out of luck.
The method is easy but it will wipe your phone.
There is a chance yo could be waiting for a looong time.
So if I'm OK with wiping it works. Everything will work?

Try towel root, it worked on my nc5, only problem is that the bootloader is locked so I cannot flash roms
Simply search "towelroot apk" and you should find a link to xda or to towelroot.com
