[Q] Root S2 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

This is the information which was in Settings -> About, I want to root the S2 and install CWM so I can install custom ROM, can someone guide me or provide me a tutorial please,
Model Number: Samsung SGH i777
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband Version: i777UCKH7
Kernel: 2.6.35.7
Build Number: Gingerbread.UCKH7
Also before installing a custom ROM, how do I format my S2 internal memory?
Thanks for your help!

You are a senior member here. Surely you know the rules.
I will give you a clue. Search for anything creepyncrawly has posted and follow the links in his sig.

I did look at this tutorial. but I wasn't sure if it will work because it says Not working for KK6 2.3.6 in the first post but I'm new to this or maybe there's a newer version of rooting the phone

You can do that from CWM Recovery. You don't need to format Internal Storage before flashing a custom ROM though...

So you do know the rules. Search and read and read some more. There are so many posts on this topic it shouldn't be too hard to figure it out.
The first 2 options are not working. That leaves 2 options available from that thread. The third option would be the exynos abuse apk.

Got my new Galaxy S2 - How to root/install CWM?

Hello,
I just got my new Galaxy S2 and want to install the Resurrection Remix Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854)
Since there are soo many topics and threads here, I can't even find the answer I'm looking for with the search bar, so I'm sorry to ask.
I want to know how to install CWM and this ROM, is there a guide somewhere? What's the best way to root it and install CWM?
It would be really nice if someone could post it.
Thanks a lot in advance!
Greezes,

just get odin and then flash a rooted and cmw kernel.
Sent from my GT-I9100G using xda premium
Well, first thing to do is to get Odin like our friend already said, u can look here in forum for links, u will need the Odin 1.85
After that go to this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Its Chainfire kernel, it Root and install CWM and Superuser basically.. he keeps it the most original as possible...
Attention ! Download the version that is compatible to ur ROM Version !
now go to odin, in PDA u add the .tar file from chainfire and select start. (If u dont know how to use Odin completelly, i suggest u to read something about first!)
After its complete the SGSII will restart and it will be rooted, now u can download the rom u want and flash it through CWM...
Remember to read FAQ first...
Thank you button if u like it ! =D
Acutally, the first thing you should do is confirm what model of the Galaxy SII you have, since there are over a dozen variants, some of which are specific to the US. I say this because this is your first post in the Galaxy SII forum, and a brief perusal of your posting history doesn't really give any clues as to your geographical location.
Look on the label under the battery.
Does it say "GT-i9100"?
If so, you're in the right place.
If not, you're in the wrong place, and flashing ANYthing for an i9100 will potentially brick your device.
I got a Galaxy S2 i9100.
Thanks a lot for your great replys, you guys are awesome!!
I know what to do now.

Welcome pal ! This Forum helped me for one year till now, its great to share some experience ! =D
Just have another question because I don't want to brick my new S2:
In this guide which Danpamio posted: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I have to look for the right ROM to flash via odin to my S2.
Mine got the "LP7" in the system settings info.
Now, which of there roms do I have to install? What's the difference?
CF-Root-SGS2_DX_XTC_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip
CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip
Thanks in advance!
This is the safe way, just notice recovery is only there until you reboot, but root stays, still there are instructions how to unroot

If you read the entire thread you are referencing it clearly states:
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.zip
The XX and OXA identifiers are not that important. Usually a "KG1" kernel is a "KG1" kernel, and that is that. Sometimes (pretty rare) it happens there will be multiple different kernels with the same name in different firmwares, that are actually different. If this happens, they are usually only very minor changes and you should expect them to still be fully compatible. I include the "XX" and "OXA" identifiers so the very advanced users can deduce from which full firmware I have taken the kernel file.

That should answer your questions.

Which root kernel should i have for my phone (I9100XWLPT)

I have the following unlocked phone (see under). I read the following thread and i got the impression that it is better to find the closest "version", so one number up, but i only see LPQ which is below mine(?), not any LPT?

Easiest method:
- Root your device here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
- flash Siyah kernel or SpeedMod afterwards.
*** READ THIS***
- You must change your kernel from a stock/stock- based one. This is because there is a brick bug on your stock kernel, if you do factory reset on your stock kernel in CWM recovery after rooting, your device is gone

I forgot something in my first post, should i use Odin or CWM recovery mode? I see there is some recommend Odin and some CWM recovery, but as i am new to all this i am not sure what to use, i found a guide for Odin, but not for CWM. I also read something about a counter will increase if i use Odin, why is this bad for me?

Odin will increase your counter.
Use my method to root. you can then flash a custom kernel via CWM recovery or mobile Odin which will not increase your counter

There's no bother on Binary Counts as you can reset it using Triangle Away .

if you boot your device in download mode, it will show you 'custom binary counter' or so.
The counter is 0 on a new device but will increase each time you flash a custom ROM/kernel/package not signed by Samsung via Odin.
If you go to a service center to claim warranty, the first thing their engineer will first check if the binary counter

I understand what you are writing about stock kernel, but then which kernel should i switch to based upon the details i have posted in my original, could you post link to recommended kernel? I am so new to this that i need to be teaspoon-fed with details, there is so many ROMs and Kernels out there that it is a jungle and the more i read the more confused i get all about this. I read one thread, which again link me to another thread. I think this task or what i need to accomplish should have taken less then 30min(?), but has probably driven me for 3-4 hours. Nevertheless, i enjoy doing research
I like to keep my phone as stock as possible, but with root access so i can gradually remove things i do not want or install other programs.

I would try the SiyahKernal, everyone will advise you to test ROMs out for yourself.. not everybody is the same and prefers different ROMs.

Samsung Galaxy SII Rooting Help

Before I start, I just want to say I am completely new to the forums and this site in general, but look forward to being a part of the community. Cheers. :good:
Being a complete idiot at technology, I cannot seem to figure out how to root my Samsung Galaxy SII. The details of it are:
- Model Number: GT - I9100
- Android Version: 4.0.3 (ICS)
- Baseband Version: I9100DXLPA
- Kernel Version: [email protected] #3
- Build Number: IML74K.DXLPB
Can any kind soul provide this lonely fool on how to root his SGSII or a forum thread to how to? It seems that my baseband version is different and I cannot seem to find a root that works for it
Anyway, thanks in advance!
Hi,
Welcome to XDA.
You can learn how to root your SII running on ICS here.
Check this out.
One simple advice, read (or repeatedly reading) before asking any question. In xda, there are more than enough guides for rooting, probably more than my underwears.

Does both of this links work for my baseband version and kernel version? Is it universal?
FYI, the baseband have nothing to do with rooting, it is commonly known as the "Modem". You only need to pay attention to the firmware (aka ROM) and the kernel. Read the whole guide, understand the risk of not following instruction before you attempt to start anything.
Edit: Using CWM to root will not give you Yellow Triangle nor increase in binary counter, because it doesn't need you to flash an insecure kernel. (which is the method 1)
Use method 1 from 1st guide in my signature. You don't need CWM and it works for all ICS ROMs.

[Q] i9100G - Root + CM10 install help. Firmware confusion!!

Hello People,
Let me begin by stating that I am very very new to Android rooting and custom roms (actually, this is my first time ).
I have a SGS2 i9100G. I have attached the screenshot of my phone software details. I have searched on the internet and XDA but am unable to find or maybe understand how to root my device and install CyanogenMod 10 (JB 4.1). Whenever I reach a post which seems like the way to root my device, it talks about firmwares and modems which are different than what my phone has.
I would be very very greatful if someone can sort this for me and provide some links and steps on how can I successfully root my phone and install CM10 (JB 4.1). Thanks a lot already as I know people will start replying in no time.
Cheers !!
This link might be usefull to you:

But pay attention to what kind of kernel you flash, because you have ICS, and I haven't checked if the links in the thread are maybe for Gingerbread.
About flashing CM10: just follow the flashing guides on xda, and make sure you download the file for I9100G.

Hey buddy,
Thanks for the reply. I checked the link but it does not says anywhere about which firmware or android version I should be. As the latest update is from March, 2012, I am assuming that this is for Gingerbread with old kernels. I don't feel good about flashing this. Do we have anything specifically for my kernel/firmware?
Thanks for your reply again. Hoping you will lead me to the right path.

I'm don't really follow the I9100G-threads as I myself have an I9100, so for rooted ICS-kernels you can flash through Odin you have to look for yourself (or someone else might know this)...
And what about flashing the official GB-rom with Odin, then root it with the link I send you, and then upgrade by flashing a custom rom..?

Frankly, no, it's not all necessary, but if you follow that guide you should be ok.
The important thing to understand is that these days, the recovery on the i9100 is using the recovery partition; whereas before the recovery was bundled with the kernel. So if you are attempting to install and use TWRP 3.x(recommended), you need a kernel installed that has "isorec" support. Please take your time to read up and understand before you go flashing stuff You will also need to repartition, as is mentioned in the updating thread I linked earlier.
- Isorec thread(read also the github link in the thread)
- TWRP thread
