[Q] How to S-OFF with hboot 1.58? - HTC EVO 3D

So I've searched for ways to get S-Off on this thing (HTC EVO 3D hboot 1.58 software 2.89) and I can't seem to find anything. Juponutbear doesn't support windows anymore so I can't do the wire trick. Anything will help, I just want to get this thing S-OFF! :fingers-crossed:

Have you already installed a custom recovery?
If so, flash the rooted stock ROM from this post then go directly to Step3 of my root/S-OFF guide. You will need to download and unzip the Sprint version of the all-in-one file, but don't even try to flash the RUU that's included.
Once you are S-OFF you can flash the Virgin Mobile RUU then update to current firmware by installing the OTA's or flashing the firmware only zip files.

Does it matter if I'm Sprint CDMA though? Or is this only for VM?

I also don't have Ubuntu or Linux. I have Windows. Am I helpless now..?

OK, somehow I missed that you are Sprint not VM.
That makes it easier actually. Just follow the guide from the beginning and post in that thread if you have any problems. That procedure should work for you regardless or whether or not unlimited.io supports it and the worst case is that you might have to flash the RUU again and download their Linux version and LiveCD but that's not likely to happen.
Good luck!

Oh yeah and by the way, I can't even flash the ROM. I have TWRP 2.4.4.0 and when I try, it says failed. I'm starting to really hate this phone now.

You're doing fine if you got to the wire trick.
That error just means the timing is not right or the wire isn't making proper contact. Try watching the videos in #1 of the tips and references section for Step3 if you haven't already, and sometimes it helps to use a lower capacity SD card if you have one.

i had to do this probably 5 times before I got it right. and i thought i bricked in the middle. but it all worked out in the end

Problem with HTC EVO 3D

Hi guys
Is there any chance that I can reinstall android OS from scratch? The reason why I need to do that, is because I removed the SD card from phone while firmware update was taking place and updating failed. Now my phone cannot boot up and factory reset cannot be done as well.
Thanks

I have a post here with download links and information for flashing the RUU.exe from Windows. Note that the procedure is slightly different depending if you are S-On or S-OFF, since you didn't say which you are.
I usually recommend putting the phone into fastboot USB mode in the bootloader before running the RUU, but if you can't do that just connect it via USB and try running the RUU.exe. It can usually find the phone.

I wouldn't recommend running the 2.89 RUU if you are not a Sprint user. I guess you need to tell us a little more about your configuration and how you got to where you are now.

I am assuming you are trying to gain s-off correct? If that's the case perhaps I can offer you a different solution. With this solution you won't have to downgrade your hboot. Here's a link to this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743466
Now before you attempt it you must have the prerequisites met:
Unlocked via HTC Dev method
On stock ROM
Have superuser root
A PC windows or Linux
Insulated wire (speaker wire, or a paperclip wrapped with electrical tape is good enough)
Make sure HTC sync and or iTunes are uninstalled so they won't interfere
You will follow method D on the guide for those who are on 1.53
Follow the directions step by step. Make sure you download the appropriate control bear based on what os, phone, and computer you are using.
Make sure you know what contact areas you need to touch. This is the wire trick BTW.
When you have everything set up run the exe file and when it prompts you. Touch both contacts at the same time.
It might take a few tries but it should work.

Yes I am tryin to gain S-OFF on my EVO 3D.
Unlocked via HTC Dev method: unlocked
On stock ROM: I would need a RUU correct? I downloaded one but the image version was lower than mine ( mine image version: 3.28.401.1 )
Have superuser root: i have
A PC windows or Linux : windows 7
Insulated wire (speaker wire, or a paperclip wrapped with electrical tape is good enough): sorii my englisch aint that good a picture would help
Make sure HTC sync and or iTunes are uninstalled so they won't interfere: never had HTC sync or Itunes
No you don't need a ruu if your already on stock. Your all good to go. There should be a picture of where to touch the contacts and a video if I'm not mistaken in unlimited.io's page where you find the evo 3d.

OK once you get the file. Remember to relock your boot loader first before flashing your ruu.
1. Power down you phone and put it in fast boot
2. Make sure USB debugging is enabled
3. Hook your phone up to your PC
4. Run cmd and type fastboot oem lock.
5. If the file is an exe you can run it on your PC after relocking.
6. If not place it on root of sdcard and rename it too PG86IMG in all caps
7. Boot into boot loader and let your phone pick up the update
8. Start and let the update finish
9. Unlock bootloader again
10. Flash recovery
11. Flash super user
Presto!! Now your ready to run wire trick. Good luck.

I will create a mirror on dev-host and add it to your thread when it's ready since that should be faster and not have the advertising and such that hotfile uses. I have a CDMA model myself but I know a lot of people have the European version of the GSM model.

Nope. Its not necessary anymore. You've been set free kinda like the matrix lol. You can upgrade and downgrade your hboot with no hassles. Flash any gsm evo 3d rom you want. With the exception of cool sense you can be whatever hboot you want and on any sense or aosp ROM you want. Just remember to be on 1.49 to flash aosp roms.
Please don't forget to abuse my thank you button. I'm glad you got s-off. Happy flashing sir.
Edit: viper 3d is the only ROM I know that can be on any hboot. However I am not sure about the other ROMs. I'm CDMA so have no clue about gsm roms. I would make sure to know what hboots are compatible with whatever ROM your interested in before flashing. Sorry about yje confusion.
You should be ok to flash any rom in the gsm threads without any issues with hboot 1.49, I'm gsm with hboot 1.49, unlocked through revolutionary and s-off, I have yet to find a rom that will not boot ics 3.6,ics 4,ics 4.1, and jb

Ruu Version

So I have the virgin mobile 3d and I am rooted with s-on. I've been trying to get it off tho. So I was following the quick and dirty thread. And so I relocked the boot loader and then I started up the RUU like the guide. And about halfway through the installation it gave me boot loader version error 140. So I looked it up and I think it means that I was trying to downgrade. And that's why it didn't work. I was supposedly going from 1.14 down to 1.13. These are the version The ruu gave. I'm not sure what the numbers were about but can someone help? That ruu was supposed to be the most updated one. And i have been searching like crazy. Any help would be appreciated. I understand these things, so don't be afraid to talk techy to me lmfao. Thanks

See the note for S-ON users in this post, which is also linked in the informational posts after Step3 of the guide. The reason you are having this problem is because you have already installed the OTA, which has a higher main version (mainver) than the VM RUU.

The PG86DIAG.zip file is an advanced diagnostic that is very tightly controlled by HTC, but the bootloader always looks for it anyway.
The filename for the zip doesn't matter when you use the fastboot flashing method. Can you paste the messages you are getting here starting with the "fastboot erase cache" command? Make sure you delete the PG86IMG.zip file from the root of the SD card before trying the fastboot method.

So you're saying I should extract the PG86IMG.zip from an older VM ruu? And then place in the root of my sdcard? That would give me the stock boot loader :-/. I already got s-off with jbear hboot 1.7
I'm trying to dual boot eventually so I want to be on hboot 1.5
Edit: one thing I haven't tried is leaving it named PG86IMG.zip and placing it on the SD card. But using 1.5 is that safe to try?. I'm thinking it will work because it is a sprint phone. It has sprint branding. It is just on VM. Let me know what you think

Follow the instructions in this post since you are S-OFF already. I recommend the JBear 1.50.5050 instead on the 1.50 hboot since that doesn't need to be unlocked to run extended fastboot commands.

[Q] Downgraded HBOOT - no ROOT possible?

Wanna earn a free hug and a huge thump up on XDA? Then solve this riddle:
I successcully downgraded the HBOOT of my friends HTC EVO 3D GSM to 1.49.0007 using the Ultimate Recovery Tool. Thing is, I had to soft-brick the system first to downgrade the HBOOT and now, after the downgrade and automated unbricking) I obviously can't gain S-OFF. Why is that? Well, his phone wad previously been repaired and got a new motherboard, thus I cannopt unlock via HTC-Dev. And since I have no working Android system to boot into, rooting via Revolutionary doesn't work either (stopped at waiting for device). What to do now? ALL (good) HINTS WILL BE REWARDED!

Have you ever used LINUX? Dude, I've googled for hours to find the STOCK RECOVERY for the phone of my friend, but it seems like this thing is hiding! Could you help me out to find it? You'll receive another thump up. Here's the setup:
* HTC EVO 3D GSM
* HBOOT 1.49.0007
* RADIO 11.25.3504.06_M
* OpenDSP v02.6.0.2226.00.0202
Are you able to find the correct stock recovery image? Flashing other recoveries results in "FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)".

No, I've never used LINUX
Try to open your RUU exe file and see if there's recovery image. If there is, extract it and push it to your phone

Maybe you can get it with a PG86IMG.zip.

Here's a list of RUU downloads. Some of them are also available as zips.
Maybe you can find your desired recovery img there.
Edit:
I do also use linux (ubuntu).
In case of none of the zips is the right one:
I remember some time ago (rather long time ago) I pulled some files out of an ruu exe.
I've been running a win xp img in virtual box for doing that.
Just run the ruu exe and look for the extracted files in tmp directory.

Help recover my Evo 4G LTE

I would like to start out with saying that I am not new to rooting/roms but a lot has changed since I went to iOS. I have TWRP accessible and I can push files to my /sdcard/
I have tried several rooms but all of them fail to install.
Can someone please tell me the steps I need to take to go back to either stock or have another ROM working? (RUU fails as well, however it does detect the phone)
Any help is appreciated and trust me I spent hours reading threads so not just posting this for an easy way out.

First, this should probably be in the Q&A section
Second, gonna need WAY more info about your phone. I assume you're rooted? S-off or S-on? What hboot version are you on? What version of TWRP are you currently using? What ROM are you on now? What RUU are you trying to use? Gonna have to give a little bit for us to work with.
Edit: Your signature also says you have the Evo Shift? Are you on the write forum?

I apologize for posting this in the wrong forum, like I was saying I haven't been here in a while and signature is outdated by about 6 years
Heres the info
TWRP v2.7.1.0
S-ON
HBOOT-2.10.0000
RADIO-1.13.11.1105
I had the last leaked RUU installed before I attempted flashing a custom ROM
Thank you for your reply!

Is your goal to flash another ROM or to go back to stock?
If you're going to be trying to flash another ROM I'd highly recommend running rumrunner and getting s-off. Otherwise there are a lot of hoops you'll need to jump through in order to flash ROMs (for starters, you'll need to flash the kernel separately).

Whichever one is faster, I just want the phone up and running again.
So it's not running at all now? I'm assuming you can boot into bootloader and recovery but nothing else, right? You can run an RUU while in fastboot if I recall, which will give you at least a usable phone. That's also probably the fastest thing to do.
After that I'd highly recommend using rumrunner to get s-off. Otherwise flashing new ROMs will be a bear.

RUU fails with errors and it gets stuck at "HTC" screen
Do you have HTC Sync installed on your computer?

Ah, I think something else made me delete it.
That'll do it. You need to have HTC Sync and all of the necessary drivers to run the RUU

D'oh! I bet your bootloader is still unlocked. It needs to be relocked before running the RUU.
Fastboot command 'fastboot oem lock' ought to do the trick.
