Wanna earn a free hug and a huge thump up on XDA? Then solve this riddle:
I successcully downgraded the HBOOT of my friends HTC EVO 3D GSM to 1.49.0007 using the Ultimate Recovery Tool. Thing is, I had to soft-brick the system first to downgrade the HBOOT and now, after the downgrade and automated unbricking) I obviously can't gain S-OFF. Why is that? Well, his phone wad previously been repaired and got a new motherboard, thus I cannopt unlock via HTC-Dev. And since I have no working Android system to boot into, rooting via Revolutionary doesn't work either (stopped at waiting for device). What to do now? ALL (good) HINTS WILL BE REWARDED!

Have you ever used LINUX? Dude, I've googled for hours to find the STOCK RECOVERY for the phone of my friend, but it seems like this thing is hiding! Could you help me out to find it? You'll receive another thump up. Here's the setup:
* HTC EVO 3D GSM
* HBOOT 1.49.0007
* RADIO 11.25.3504.06_M
* OpenDSP v02.6.0.2226.00.0202
Are you able to find the correct stock recovery image? Flashing other recoveries results in "FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)".

Here's a list of RUU downloads. Some of them are also available as zips.
Maybe you can find your desired recovery img there.
Edit:
I do also use linux (ubuntu).
In case of none of the zips is the right one:
I remember some time ago (rather long time ago) I pulled some files out of an ruu exe.
I've been running a win xp img in virtual box for doing that.
Just run the ruu exe and look for the extracted files in tmp directory.

I'm using the latest version of Joelz Sense Redefined and occasionally my phone would just restart when I'm using it. It happened to me today and it won't boot back up. I got it into fastboot by holding down and power after a battery pull but when I choose any of the options, it just shows me the HTC screen and the turns off. It also won't charge...I haven't had this before. Is there something like ODIN for HTC phones?
I don't know what ODIN is but if you're willing to start over you can run the RUU and get yourself back to stock. You'd have to download the latest 2.x version, relock the phone in fastboot, make sure you have HTC Sync installed on your pc, run RUU. Then you can flash Amon Ra again and install su from the AR developer menu to regain root. Then you can flash a ROM again.
Fera,
Thanks for the response. I was downloading an RUU in hopes that would work, but I currently can't find anyone offering them for more than a few kbps.
Did you remember to delete the .img file from your SD card the last time you did an install?
Yeah, I just used Scott's CleanFlash to flash the img.
RUUing actually failed. Said I had the wrong bootloader or something. I had indeed relocked.

There isn't one but try searching for Awesome Recovery Tool in the dev section. It automates mainver workarounds. If that doesn't help your situation search "mainver" as you need to do a fix since your phone is on a higher mainver than the official one due to the ICS leak.

You said you can get into fastboot? Try flashing Amon Ra again, I read that v3.10 is best for ICS. And maybe the kernel in case that got corrupted.

Personally I think that fix 2 will get you to where you need to be. I tried it before just to see if I could do it, and it was pretty easy.

Have you already installed a custom recovery?
If so, flash the rooted stock ROM from this post then go directly to Step3 of my root/S-OFF guide. You will need to download and unzip the Sprint version of the all-in-one file, but don't even try to flash the RUU that's included.
Once you are S-OFF you can flash the Virgin Mobile RUU then update to current firmware by installing the OTA's or flashing the firmware only zip files.

OK, somehow I missed that you are Sprint not VM.
That makes it easier actually. Just follow the guide from the beginning and post in that thread if you have any problems. That procedure should work for you regardless or whether or not unlimited.io supports it and the worst case is that you might have to flash the RUU again and download their Linux version and LiveCD but that's not likely to happen.
Good luck!

You're doing fine if you got to the wire trick.
That error just means the timing is not right or the wire isn't making proper contact. Try watching the videos in #1 of the tips and references section for Step3 if you haven't already, and sometimes it helps to use a lower capacity SD card if you have one.

I've been trying to root my EVO 4G LTE using various guides from this board, and I'm not having a lot of luck. I have HBOOT 2.09 and it's S-ON. It seems like the easiest way to root the device is to go S-OFF, but then it appears that the device needs to be rooted to get S-OFF. So I'm a little confused at this point. I've unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP, but when I try to install the SuperSU root utility it gives me an error about mounting partitions and fails. My bootloader screen also displays "TAMPERED" which seems to be a problem but I'm not having a lot of luck finding a way to resolve it.
So... can anyone tell me what my next step is?
Thanks in advance.
Are you using Facepalm, Moonshine, or DirtyRacun? You haven't really provided enough details to help, at this point. What's your software version? I assume you're running the stock ROM?
I was running the stock ROM, I think it was 3.16. I tried using Facepalm but again it seems like it needs root to work which I haven't been able to achieve just yet. I tried installing the ROM from this thread through TWRP but it just hangs on the HTC screen so I'm not sure what's on there now. I can still get into the bootloader and recovery though.
You can't use Facepalm on 3.16 software. Use Moonshine.
Try flashing this stock rooted to get back to a working state: http://d-h.st/users/Captain_Throwback/?fld_id=10308#files
You may need to fastboot flash the boot.img to make sure it fully boots.
OK, I downloaded that ROM and extracted the boot.img. I booted the phone into the bootloader and ran "fastboot flash boot boot.img". It seems to have completed correctly, no errors at least, but now the phone just sits at the HTC screen with the red text at the bottom. Clearly I'm doing something wrong...
Did you flash the ROM too? Or did it reboot on you when you tried?
I just did the boot.img. Should I also do "fastboot flash zip 3.16.651.3_stock_rooted_odex_CPTB.zip"?

You have to flash the ROM in recovery.
Ok, so I went into recovery which is still TWRP, adb pushed that ROM to the phone then tried to install it. It gives a bunch of error messages about being unable to mount various items, says it's unable to find path for partition [name of the zip] and fails.
Thanks for your help and patience so far...
You do not extract the file, leave it as a zip and do not open it. Move it to your SD card while in fastboot (mount sd) and from there use twrp and select the correct zip to flash. But above all... DO NOT EXTRACT THE FILR

I don't understand what you're doing here. Boot to recovery, mount storage, copy the ROM zip over, and then flash it.
Ok, so I mounted storage from recovery, or least I tried to, my PC said it needed to be formatted. So I did so, copied the file over and flashed it which completed successfully this time. Your storage is likely corrupt. You can format it with your PC but this will delete everything from your storage. All you need to do is download the SuperSU zip to your phone and flash it in recovery, then you'll be rooted. You'll also need to install the SuperSU app from the Play store if it's not included in whatever ROM you flash. Once you've done this you can start the S-off process.

If you have any important files on your internal storage copy them to your PC. You can download the SuperSU zip afterwards and use your computer or a file manager to move it to your SD card if you'd like but it won't matter where you put it, it's just personal preference.

I have tried several rooms but all of them fail to install.
Can someone please tell me the steps I need to take to go back to either stock or have another ROM working? (RUU fails as well, however it does detect the phone)
Any help is appreciated and trust me I spent hours reading threads so not just posting this for an easy way out.

First, this should probably be in the Q&A section
Second, gonna need WAY more info about your phone. I assume you're rooted? S-off or S-on? What hboot version are you on? What version of TWRP are you currently using? What ROM are you on now? What RUU are you trying to use? Gonna have to give a little bit for us to work with.
Edit: Your signature also says you have the Evo Shift? Are you on the write forum?

I apologize for posting this in the wrong forum, like I was saying I haven't been here in a while and signature is outdated by about 6 years
Heres the info
TWRP v2.7.1.0
S-ON
HBOOT-2.10.0000
RADIO-1.13.11.1105
I had the last leaked RUU installed before I attempted flashing a custom ROM
Thank you for your reply!

Is your goal to flash another ROM or to go back to stock?
If you're going to be trying to flash another ROM I'd highly recommend running rumrunner and getting s-off. Otherwise there are a lot of hoops you'll need to jump through in order to flash ROMs (for starters, you'll need to flash the kernel separately).

Whichever one is faster, I just want the phone up and running again.
So it's not running at all now? I'm assuming you can boot into bootloader and recovery but nothing else, right? You can run an RUU while in fastboot if I recall, which will give you at least a usable phone. That's also probably the fastest thing to do.
After that I'd highly recommend using rumrunner to get s-off. Otherwise flashing new ROMs will be a bear.

RUU fails with errors and it gets stuck at "HTC" screen
Do you have HTC Sync installed on your computer?

Ah, I think something else made me delete it.
That'll do it. You need to have HTC Sync and all of the necessary drivers to run the RUU

D'oh! I bet your bootloader is still unlocked. It needs to be relocked before running the RUU.
Fastboot command 'fastboot oem lock' ought to do the trick.
