Major DNS issues. Almost no internet use. - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hello all, I believe this is the first time I am posting here but I nee help...
Heres a little background, I am on an unlimited plan on the Droid Razr. I am staying with my sister ATM, as I am in the process of buying a house, the paperwork goes through tomorrow then I just have to wait 30 days for the loan to go through... Anyway, the only internet I can get here is AT&T uverse which is complete garbage down here... So I have been using SVTP mobile hotspot. It has worked perfectly. However I think verizon has grown to hating me... I use to have no problems with my phone, then when I moved here at the beginning of February and started using a mobile hotspot on my unlimited things started getting bad. The first half of February was fine, till I hit about 50GB of usage.... My internet started cutting out like crazy and dropping me at randoms times and I would have to reboot. February I ended up with 91GB used. My phone has been steadily getting worse and worse connection wise with the drops. The thing Is when this would happen I would still have internet, just nothing would respond...
Now, the DNS doesnt respond AT ALL with anything but google.com. It is ridiculous. When my tether is up and I try to connect my xbox, it says that my DNS server is not receiving the XBOX live server names... Hardly anything works with it now. If I try to go to websites, it just sits there and then times out. Netflix, youtube, hulu, and spotify all dont work. They tell me I have no internet connection, yet when I run a speed tests it tests fine. This is getting annoying.
When I took my phone to verizon she told me to leave it there and she will call tech support for me... Reluctantly I left it there. Turns out her solution was to install Jellybean for me. How kind.... Now not only does my DNS not work, ALL HOTSPOT APPS ARE BLOCKED.....
So what do I do? All I need is working internet and a working mobile hotspot. If I root on JB will they work again? I know If I root I can at least change my DNS to googleDNS right? I just need help...

What good is the WiFi Connection

The WiFi connection on this phone is worthless. You turn it on, it finds an access point but it still uses the phones cellular connection to browse the internet or any other data related app. What is the point of this thing?
no it does not.
Thanks for the reply GeLopez but it sure seems that way. I because regardless if I am connected to an access point or not the Internet is still slow.

Try turning Wi-fi off then go into start/settings/connections/connections settings. Pick the advanced tab/select networks. Try different combinations to achieve the desired results depending on how and what you are using the PPC to connect to. Now ok out of everything and turn Wi-fi on, now connect to your access point. Should work now. Let me know.
I will be out of the country for a few days beginning tomorrow, and wi-fi is going to be essential for me to avoid roaming charges. With wi-fi and Skype, I've got connectivity anywhere in the world.
I only use my WiFi and never use Carrier data.
Works like a charm.
Is there a setting that needs to be set. I can connect with any local wireless hotspot with this phone and the internet traffic on the phone is as slow as just using the carrier data network.

Check under Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections -> Wifi -> Adapters. Make sure that the connections are set to The Internet and not to Work. Also, make sure your wifi connection in there is set to accept a server-based ip address.
Thanks for the advice, I will give it a try.
I hope you get the wifi working for you. I use it all of the time and would be lost without it. I would not have purchased this phone if it was without.
Complain with sprint
I WAS GETTING THE SAME THING, I WOULD CONNECT AT HOME USING WIFI, BECAUSE I DIDNT HAVE A INTERNET PLAN, AND THE FIRST MONTH I GOT A HUGE BILL. I COMPLAINED FOR ABOUT AN HOUR UNTILL I GOT TO THE TECH GUYS, NEVER GET SATISFIED WITH WHAT THE CUSTOMER REP TELL YOU, HES GANNA TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE TO PAY NO MATTER WHAT, JUST KEEP PUSING AND ASKING TO SPEAK WITH A MANAGER, ONCE YOU GET TO THAT GUY HE SHOULD SET THINGS STRAIGHT.
FIRST, HE CANCELED MY CHARGE FOR INTERNET USE.
2ND, I WAS GIVEN FULL UNLIMITED INTERNET ACCESS FOR LIFE. (ALONG WITH A OFFICIAL CERTIFICATE BACKING UP THE FREE INTERNET INCASE YOU EVER GET CHARGED FOR ANY INTERNET RELATED FEE.)
iM PERTY SHURE I COULD OF KEPT PUSHING IT AND GET MORE OUT OF IT, BUT FREE INTERNET FOR LIFE WAS A PERTY SWEET DEAL. THATS A 100$ MONTHLY FEATURE FREE.
heres what i did.
first i complained about the fact that the wifi, was a feature of the phone htc, not sprint. why should i be charged for using my own wifi. Dell doesnt charge me when i connect their laptop with my wifi at home. why are you?
i specificly rememberd i also said " the wifi is not for you to be charging, it is not a service that you offer it comes with the phone, so does this mean that your going to charge me, everytime i create a word doccument, every time i play solitare, everytime i take a picture with the phone camera? thats just redicolous, you have no right to charge me for a feature that the phone offers, it has absoloutly nothing to do with sprint.!"
I bet you backup your claim, they will give you stuff too.

I bet the whole deal was your fault. I bet you used the data connection instead of the wifi connection. Because it is impossible for them to track your wifi usage. You let the dialup data connection go thru with is the default connection and rang up the huge bill.
You are the reason there are mandatory data plans with PPC and why our service gets more expensive.

Exactly what I was thinking. Good work on screwing Sprint out of their money somehow though. The customer service rep you were talking to must've been retarded.
My wifi always works fine.

I'm connecting to Xbox Live with my Alltel Touch Pro!

Before I say anything else I would like to give a huge thanks to all of the developers and people that assist in the process of making these phones above par in every imaginable way. I could not have achieved this without you.
First things first, I am not entirely sure what THE contributing factor has been that has allowed me to do this. I am brand new to flashing, I finally took the plunge last Friday, but what I do know is that before I flashed my phone it was impossible for me to connect to Xbox Live via my Touch Pro. Through the troubleshooting on my Xbox I would always make it to 'internet' but always failed when trying to connect to Xbox Live.
I am going to share my settings with you so you can see how I accomplished this. For those who are asking, no I do not have an internet account set up at home. For now it is a financial decision that is beyond mine and my wife's means so figuring this out has had huge dividends for us. One more thing, I would not advise this if you do not have an unlimited data plan.
Okay, last friday I flashed my phone to NFSFAN's latest ROM and the Telus Radio. I adjusted my TCP settings via Advanced Config. to the max setting in it which is 98304. Though I know there are ways to make the wifi be used as a hotspot, I simply transferred a program I have been using for sometime over to the new ROM after flashing, it is Walking Hotspot. I enabled this program on my phone and connected to the network my phone was sending out via a wireless adapter for my Xbox 360. After doing that I logged into my account on my Xbox and boom.... Xbox Live.
My theory is that it lies in the ROM that was flashed. I tested all of the radios that are available to be flashed for CDMA and had the same results for all, so it does not seem to solely rest on the Telus. Even though after substantial speed testing, the Telus, for my phone understanding each phone has different results, had the highest download speeds. Average speeds ranged from 1.09 Mbps at one bar of reception to 3.5 Mbps at four bars of reception.
I have played multiplayer for hours, downloaded megabytes of DLC content, and watched TV shows and movies over Netflix without it over heating the wifi within my phone. It has been an amazing experience.
I wanted to post this because a few months ago I searched tirelessly to find a solution to fix the non-connection issue I was having. Hopefully, if someone is in the same boat this can be of some help to them.
I've wanted to try this but i find it hard to believe that the internet is fast enough to support playing over Xbox live.
Never know tho i could be wrong
I thought the same thing until I tried it. I promise you, all of the information I shared on here is legitimate.
Don't be surprised if you end up seeing data charges on your bill. Stealth tethering or not w/o a Phone as a modem plan they know that you are not browsing the web on your device. Just lettin you know. I'm banned from XBL any way lol.
confirmed
I've been doing this since my 8525 and kaiser. I do mine somewhat different though. I use internet sharing on my laptop from my phone, then hook up my 360 to my laptop and bridge the connection. Works great, been doing it for like 3 years now and no overage charge for my data, still at 9.99 a month.

That is a 'teathering'
they can detect that.
however the wifirouter is what he is explaining.

If there was a detection issue, I'm sure I would be paying thousands of dollars for the 13mil of kilobytes I processed through this past month. Thankfully it is not.
Yeah I have been doing this with my free version of WMWifirouter since my mogul. I am on Sprint, and the speeds are fast enough. So WMWifiRouter + Xbox wifi adapter=Xbox live. Didn't realize this was not possible on all. Huh, who knew?
btw
do still have the free wifirouter file handy?
i had it for my mogul as well but... that was dropped in soup... with all my wm file cabs...
i tried searching for it again with no luck...

[Q] Data Stops When Tethered?

Before learning the basics about rooting and flashing ROMs (I still consider myself a noob though) I was using EasyTether for my laptop data connection and it was working great.
Recently I rooted so I could use WiFi Tether which seemed to work well for about a week. For no apparent reason I've begun having issues.
My brief history, in order, includes:
OTA 2.1
rootme.zip (problems began shortly hereafter)
FlashBack21_v1.zip
Tenzo-Official2.1-cache.zip
kaosfroyo-v38.zip (this rocks but...)
So, the problem is that after a few minutes (and I mean maybe 1-2) of using tethered data from my phone (in all ROMs listed after root) said data stops. Disconnecting/reconnecting has no effect. The only resolution is to restart phone and reconnect. Works for a few brief moments then stops. This behavior was consistent with USB Tether, Wifi Tether and Easy Tether.
When observing this behavior on my laptop and then browsing back on my phone there also seems to be no data connection. All is well when I restart the phone. So long as I don't tether my phone browses normally.
So, what should my next steps be here? How do I troubleshoot? Is it possible that Verizon can detect that I'm tethered and is shutting down my data?
Thanks
Bernie
They may have detected it. Wait for the bill.
This crap has been happening off and on for me since I began tethering with my rooted Eris last May. Just in the past month, though, the symptoms seem to have become more frequent. Occasionally I'll have an uninterrupted session...but typically I'm frequently running to my phone, putting it in airplane mode momentarily, restarting tether, etc.
I've tried switching to hybrid PRLs, changing radios, updating towers, reactivating my phone, multiple ROMS...still pretty crappy. Also, in the past I noticed Windows 7 seemed to lock up tethering more frequently than XP...however, that has since become less true. My next step was to update my Windows 7 Wifi driver...did that this morning and have been going strong for 40 minute or so. I'm guessing it's just luck at this point.
BTW...Don't worry too much about your bill...I've seen no tethering charges and have been doing this for 6 months.
So, I flashed back to an un-rooted stock ROM and installed EasyTether again and have tested a few times now using only USB tethering. No dice. Symtoms are the same. It works for a while then just stops. Won't work again until I restart phone.
When I disconnect the phone from the Laptop, the phone's browser doesn't appear to be getting data either. All pages/bookmarks just hang with the progress bar maybe at 20%.
So, I suspect this is either the network is picking up that I'm tethering somehow, or, the phone is jacked. The bummer is that I can only replicate this when tethering.
Someone suggested that tethering may be against the Verizon terms of service. Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks,
Bernie
Tethering is against the TOS sure. I don't know man.

+1 - I hate to say this and it's a cliche, but I'm glad it's not just me. Most of the time I have uninterrupted tethering for just browsing, but when I start downloading that's when it becomes more susceptible to the 3G going in and out.
I usually do an APN delete and restore but I still find that a reboot is necessary most of the time.
Sometimes I do have uninterrupted downloads but other times it gets interrupted all the time.
I am using Wifi tethering, too. I used to use USB tethering, but even though both get interrupted, Wifi tethering seems to work better. It's faster to connect.

[Q] best way to turn phone in to home internet

I want to say bye, bye to TW internet, but don't know the best way to make My Razr 4G LTE internet to all PC's,Ps3 and my Xbox 360.
I put it here becouse the Razr forms are small vs this one and Is more about LTE any way.
Thanks
Not really
It's not really the solution you wanted, but assuming you are not trying to tether the world to your cell phone (which should then double nicely as a heater), why not just get a mobile hotspot and be done with it.
I hate my TWC wires (2 cables spanning 2 neighbors yards) and have pulled twice the speed on my Rezound than I am getting from TWC (although not at home, regrettably). I say this because I understand your frustration first hand; I just disagree with your proposed resolution.
looked into this a bit, my conclusion was that:
1) unless you have a fairly small network (ie just yourself), you're going to need to go the route of the mobile hotspot.
&
2) the mobile hotspot hardware currently available isn't reliable enough to trust as a dedicated home internet solution.
Don't be fooled I use mine for everything and I pay for unlimited mobile hotspot. Just can't use everything at onces.

I get only maybe 20-30ms higher on my phone tether vs my FiOS.
If you are dead set on doing this, I would use your PC/Laptop as a network bridge. You should be able to connect the LAN cable to your PC and then into where your modem would plug into your router. But, you would have to setup your router first, or connect it via USB to setup since you wouldn't be able to use the provider software or the IP to connect in through that port. Just an idea, but like others said, reliability could probably be zero.
Let me tell you the "reliability" of my TW cable internet right now: It gos form 7-10DL to 3 and then even to under 1, 2-4 times A DAY. It go's out at times too, so I can't see it geting more bad then that.
P.S I am "dead set" on having home internet that has good up time and able to play 1080p video if needed.
Time Warner doesn't offer a package higher than 10mbps? Why not just get Fios or something? Have you even called TW? I had an issue like this a few years back (With a provider in GA I can't remember the name) where I wasn't getting the 25mbps I was paying for. They came out and tested my modem and it was dying. They replaced it, and it worked from then on out. It was even a modem I paid for myself, they gave me a new one and took the old one free of charge.
Koush posted that Tether is in the Android Market now.
I pay for 15DL and 1UL, But am only geting 6-10DL and .5UL. I think it's BS, but I can't poof that to them. I Have used all kinds of speed test and they all never hit more than 11-12DL and 1UL. LTE has been about the same on DL at home after the outges and DEC the 25th. ( It was geting 10-15DL and now its 4-10DL and 5-6UL.)
Now I am a bit mad at the big red, becuase on AT&T my speeds have been going up and Up and up. (I think AT&T Is about toput up LTE here soon)
LTE is extremelt cool, and will only get better. But as of right now, I wouldn't call it reliable enough to handle an entire house full of bandwidth-hungry devices.
My At&T U-Verse internet advertises up to 25mBps. This, to the average user, probably sounds like more than one would ever need. But what they don't tell you is that each TV (when its box is on) takes up to 6mBps of that bandwidth all by itself. So if you've got 2 HDTVs running in the house, and somebody gaming online, suddenly that internet speed ain't lookin' all that cutting-edge.
According to what I've gleaned from the small amount of research I've done, you need a solid 10mBps to stream 1080p HD content without bottlenecking. The top AT&T U-verse package I have can do it all day long, while also handling whatever else may be using bandwidth. I would worry about any plan below the top one though. Maybe if you only have one HDTV connection in the house.
I tried tethering off my phone when temp-root v2 came out, and I was impressed with the results. But I was also realistic about it. My tether speed tests came in at roughly 6-7mBps downloaded. Not bad in a pinch, but certainly nowhere near good enough to power a whole house. And certainly not good enough to stream HD.
I don't think the idea of a phone providing internet for the home far off, but we just aren't there yet. I'm thinking in 5-10 years.
If you want to use your phone as your home internet service, pm me. I've been using mine for my home for the last 4 years, cuz I don't have dsl. It's awesome, and I can help you get it up and running. I've averaged 40-50gb per month for the past 3 years. PM me.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
I used 30Gb and I saw my speed in my home go down, but at work it would be fast as ever with 5 bars. My billing just started to day and my DL is now in the 20+ vs 5-7 DL before. I think I got my speeds lowered for useing 30gb. Any way TW sucks even more with that.

"Internet connection is unstable" issue

OK, I've seen a lot of posts in various forums about this issue, but have yet to find a single thread that captures all the details about what I've experienced. Let me know if I should move this conversation into a different thread.
On my home wifi network, I am able to connect, but constantly receive the error "internet connection is unstable", and I cannot pull any data over wifi. I noticed this issue on my home network after returning from a business trip this week. I'd previously seen the issue occasionally in hotels, etc, and had already disabled the "Passpoint" and "Auto network switch settings". That seemed to work on the road, but now that I'm at home, I'm unable to pull any data over wifi.
My home router is a TP-Link Archer C7, running the latest firmware.
Per Verizon and Samsung's advice, I cleared the cache partition, "forgot" and reconnected to the network, tried using safe mode, and tried a factory reset of the phone. I also restarted the router and changed the router's broadcast channels.
Last night, I rooted the phone via Kingo and installed the Jelly 'Beans' rom using SafeStrap, since I wasn't getting satisfactory answers from support. To my surprise, the issue also occurred on the new rom. I'm not an Android expert, but it seems like this means its either:
1) a hardware issue, or
2) a lower-level software issue (radio firmware? not sure how that works)
I removed root and safestrap, to continue support options with Verizon, but I wanted to ping the community here for suggestions. The timing is confusing to me. I'm pretty sure, though not certain, that I've used my home network successfully since the 12/17 OTA update. However, since so many others are seeing issues, it seems unlikely that this is a hardware issue.
Could others describe their issues and router, so we can look for patterns? Let me know if I should move this into a different thread.
Thanks!
Mine does the same thing from time to time but only on certain roms
Sent from my SM-N900V using XDA Premium HD app
yeah, I'd seen intermittent issues previously, but all of a sudden it stopped working at home entirely. Still connects to some other networks, although not all.
After seeing a bunch of posts on the Verizon forums (and just the general timing and behavior of the issue) it seemed like a software problem.
Verizon is actually cooperating, so I may just end up replacing this phone. Wondering if anyone else has seen wifi completely break like this.
This is the only thing I can not stand about my note
I have a Zyxel WAP3205 WIFI access point (Wireless G) that I use at both work and at home.
At home, I have Comcast Business Cable internet, and have absolutely no issues connecting to it. The WAP is connected to a Belkin N600 router, which is then connected to my cable modem (not sure of the model, shouldn't matter TBQH).
At work on the other hand, I have constant connection issues. Albeit, I don't get the 'connection is unstable' notification, but I get constant connect/disconnect problems. I also have almost no (most of the time I can't even send/receive text messages at my desk.....) phone signal (ie not even 1X). I'm not sure if that plays into it at all either. The company I work for uses Windstream for their ISP, and it's complete crap to be perfectly honest. Needless to say, it doesn't change the fact that I'm connecting to the internet through the same device (well, same model/firmware/etc...), and I'm having issues at 1 place and not at the other.
I might also add that my tablet (Nexus 7 2013 running CM11) doesn't seem to have these issues at all and works just fine via the WIFI.
That's about the only information that I can provide. I know my internet where I work is complete crap. I sometimes remote desktop back to my home server to browse the web and download files via that because it's actually faster. I'm not even kidding.
I have 2 routers at home and have experienced the same issue as well and none of my other devices have this problem
Sent from Rooted Note 3 (stock rom) Xposed framework
Verizon is shipping a replacement phone to me tomorrow, so I'll test this out and see if it makes a difference. I'm on the road until Thursday, so it'll be a few days before I can check on my home router.
The behavior on this issue just seems strange. It began intermittently, but then completely stopped working at my house (but still sometimes works elsewhere). Lots of people report intermittent issues, but a few seem completely broken. Not sure what to make of it, I'm just glad I was able to get a different device out of Verizon. We'll see if that actually fixes the problem.
I haven't had this notification until I got the Note3. Is it possible that its android 4.3? Or this tw 4.3? Anybody know if other folks get this with other devices?

I only have this problem if I connect to the wifi at work, which is odd because I'm about 7 unobstructed feet away from the AP. I don't get this anywhere else.
I had a Note2 on stock rom up to 4.3 and never had the issue. I have a 2012 Nexus 7 latest version, again, no problem. It's only on my Note3 with stock rom that this happens.

I've asked a couple devs if they could remove it and they said it been like that in android for along time. But I never experienced it until my Note 3

Same here. Never happened on my Note2 but happens all the time on my Note3. I have two Linksys Routers at home for full house coverage and I can be in the next room and get that message. Just got it earlier. Same routers as I had with the N2 a few months ago. My Tablet, nor the Spouses HTC One Max have that issue and are connecting just fine, and stay connected.
I get this all the time. Got it on stock as well. Only really happens with my ghetto satellite Internet though lol

Has anyone with this issue installed AdBlock and/or an ad-blocking HOSTS file? I didn't start seeing this problem until I did both.
Whenever I see this message I can go into the speedtest.net app and pull a continuous 60mbits down, pretty much maxing my connection, and I never see any actual stability issues.
I think the system may have some connectivity test that's being interfered with but I haven't had time to go digging through the logs yet, so I wanted to see if anyone else had done what I did to trigger it first.
Seems to be two different issues being discussed here without really differentiating the two... the OP states that he is always getting the notification and "can't pull any data over wifi" ... others are saying they are getting the notification without really stating if it is affecting their overall wifi performance at all.
I'm on AT&T DSL... I was getting the notification ALL THE TIME while using the supplied (4 year old) AT&T 2Wire router and it would fail and freeze and disconnect and it was DRIVING ME NUTS... so i went out and got a brand new Netgear N300 router and problem is solved ... mostly
I'm still using the AT&T 2Wire as a modem... disabled it's internal wifi... ethernet cable to the Netgear. .. and BINGO!!! All my connection problems and data problems have gone away... i still get the unstable notification maybe once or twice a week but i figure that's a DSL thing... any little glitches in Internet availability will be detected by the device and displayed so that doesn't bother me at all.
It's almost like this phone does ping tests all the time and if one doesn't come back properly it throws the notification...
i was at a friends house the other day and was getting the notification constantly but was still able to watch YouTube videos and Netflix without much problem... so i did some speed tests on his wifi and his ping and upload were all over the place... His download speed was solid between 20 and 28 but his upload was never even close to normal and failed several times... and his ping was good on some and took forever on others... i also noticed Web pages would sometimes take forever to start loading ... Once they started loading they did so quickly but the start was painfully slow a lot of the time... This would indicate to me that the ping or upload connection has issues or maybe over congested on his iSP.
Anyway... hope this helps others iron things out

Seems to be two different issues being discussed here without really differentiating the two... the OP states that he is always getting the notification and "can't pull any data over wifi" ... others are saying they are getting the notification without really stating if it is affecting their overall wifi performance at all.

When I get the notification, it refuses to use the wifi at all.
I haven't noticed any problems with my WiFi. I host 6 wireless networks, and play with WiFi a lot, War driving, and wireless network setup is a hobby of mine.
One thing I noticed at several throttled Hot Spots My VZW note 3 would test the WiFi speed, if it was slower than 4G it would display a popup, something to the effect "Wireless too slow, using mobile Data" I can't remember the exact popup text. It might be a VZW thing.
I use the OOKLA speedtest, free from the play store. (After you run your OOKLA test, for fun drag the speedometer down to reveal some cool messages about Ookla!
A few wireless router settings I use:
Set 2.4 to N 20 Megs max. N 40 or AC mostly just creates problems with connections, and the neighborhood.
Channels 1, 6, or 11 in USA Use a WiFi analyzer app and pick a less cluttered WiFi channel.
Place wireless router up high away from electronics, construction, and stuffs. Mine is on a pedestal in a window.

Go to WiFi settings/advanced/auto network switch... and turn that off so it won't jump off slow WiFi networks

Thanks,
I just tested "auto network switch" on and then off. It let me connect to one of my throttled networks, without; "Checking quality of internet connection".
I noticed that it only showed; "network disabled because internet connection is slow" on the congested 2.4 GHz band, not with same router on 5.8 GHz.
Radio interference, location, and router settings, can cause many problems on wireless networks.

You're right, I noticed in my research that multiple issues seem to be getting lumped together. I think you're correct in that it's related to the router as well, somehow. I see the notification occasionally on slow hotel connections, but it's intermittent, my problem at home seems permanent. I can use some other wifi networks without problems, though.
That said, I used this phone on my home router for a couple months before ever seeing this problem. I'm guessing it's a combination of the 12/17 OTA update, and particular router models.
Verizon sent me a replacement phone, and it's running the previous build (MJ7 instead of MJE). I'll check things out tonight, and will report back.
Alright, the issue seems resolved on the new phone. This seems to suggest that it is related to the MJE build. So far this phone hasn't asked for an update, but I'm hoping Verizon doesn't break this again for me
