I have a question. I backed up my stock rom before installing a custom rom. Now i want to install another rom, so this time do I also have to back up the rom or its already backed up as I did it once the first time? So now that if I want to move to a new rom, i just
Select Wipe Data/Factory Reset. Confirm on the next screen.
Select Wipe Cache. Confirm on the next screen.
Select Advanced and then select Wipe Dalvik Cache.
and I should be good to go? Any other steps?

Nandroid makes a snapshot of your entire phone, so you can go back to the exact moment in time when you made it.
Unless you think you'll want to go back to the current custom ROM you are using then no, don't bother.
Factory reset won't wipe the system partition, you would be better off flashing Philz recovery which includes a wipe option for use between ROM's. It's a good idea to have the right modem & RIL for your country ready just in case your new ROM has the wrong modem included..
Make sure you have backed up the entire efs partition to your pc, dropbox etc.

Thank you for your answer. I just have one more question. I did copy the efs folder, but when I open it in computer its just a blank folder. Does it have to be like that or did I copy it wrong?

Just copying the folder across in explorer won't save you if you need to restore, use Mike Skip's SG3 tool, the app from market or again Philz recovery to snapshot the entire partition. I'd advise having at least one version you can flash via odin.

It's not necessary, but you should always back up your ROM before flashing a new one.
It's a personal thing, but I only do so when I do a major leap, like from Sammy to cm or cm to Sammy or one of those to miui or something like that. Other wise I don't because I like having free space on my SD cards.

Hello, I always find the people on this corner of xda very helpful. As usual, I think I know what I'm doing, but I'd like to check that I am proceeding in the right direction.

to revert back to stock, you must wipe data/factory reset, cache, and dalvik cache. you will lose your settings. as for your apps, you can back them up with titanium backup and restore them after you have restored your backup.

when you restore your backup of the stock rom, you will still have root. i dont think unlocking your phone will cause you to lose root. your root access and custom recovery will still be intact

there might be a problem. what clockworkmod version did you use to make the backup of the stock rom? if i remember correctly, using cwm 3.x.x.x backs up a certain way (and also does not have the yaffs2 suffix) and using cwm 5.x.x.x backs up a different way (with the yaffs2 suffix) so backups may not be "inter"compatible (more info on that here). however, you can just flash back cwm 3.x.x.x right now (you can do it using rom manager), restore your stock rom backup, do the following steps, flash back cwm 5.x.x.x, then restore your backup
1. boot into recovery

I followed your instructions (I downgraded Clockwork before starting) and the 10-20% chance of you being wrong came true... but in a good way
Restoring from the backup brings everything back: apps, settings, contacts, SMSs etc. So it was actually even easier than you suggested since I didn't have to use my backups at all.

Yes... when I was back in stock I could access the unlock menu by entering 2945*#500# on my keypad. The SIM unlock code that I have worked fine. I haven't actually tested with another SIM card but the phone claimed to have been unlocked, so I should be good to go.
Well It's possible/safe to make a flashable zip of my running rom, exactly "full image" of my current one.?
So lets say my Rom A already have all the appz/modz,librarys added, and it's themed exactly as I like.. But then next week I want to run Rom B, again customized (kernel, modem,etc) to what best work for me and likes, then I want to try Rom C.. And then I want to run Rom B or A, or whatever.
So instead of flashing a completely new Rom, and start again with my mods, just wipe everything and flash my "customRom.zip on CWM
So how to make it ?
searching I found that doing a nandroid backup and trying to do a restore from that backup, must have the rom flashed first and then you can do the restore. Is that how it will work if I want to change roms ? Or is there any other way ??

No, a nandroid backup is basically a complete backup of your system. Configurations and all. I'm not 100% sure if a cache and dalvik wipe is needed between restores. But each backup should put your system back to exactly the way it was when you did the backup. Anyone pop in and correct me if I'm wrong.

You dont need to do that. In CWM just do a back up, it will back up everything. All of your settings, apps, customizations etc... it will basically back up everything like a mirror image. Then you wipe /system /data /cache and flash your new rom. Once you get it set up the way you like it, back that up, then wipe again, flash rom c, set that up and do another back up. You will now have 3 backups of 3 roms with however you set those roms up when you backed them up. for example: I have a back up of the Stock Rom, then a back of of ICScrewed, then one for Miui. Whenever I want to switch to one of those 3 I just go into recovery and restore whichever one I want to run. When you do a restore you dont need to do a wipe because recovery will wipe everything before it restores
but say if you flash rom A, back it up then flash rom B then decide to go back to rom A and while you are on rom A you make more changes to it install more apps, mods you will have to re back up Rom A otherwise you will lose those changes when you go to rom B or C and come back to A.

I don't wipe cache or dalvik cache when restoring a backup. I don't think it matters.

You can rename the folder and it will still work fine.

I did hear though that it doesn't like spaces in the folder name. For example it won't like miui 2-15-12 so you would just name it miui_2-15-12

So i want to update it to 4.4.2.
My Problem is OTA doesnt work because, i have a boot loop i come only into Recovery.
Meanwhile im out of the bootloop.
I wanted to ask if I can update without data loss.

Can you nandroid backup in recovery? If so I would do that or titanium backup and copy the backup to PC then use the link below to get back to stock. Then you can update to 4.4.2 root with ioroot25 and use autorec to get custom recovery (twrp).

What does nandroid backup save? Privat Files? Like (Whatsapp, Pics, Music and so on)

It's not exactly a clone of the whole phone. It's basically a clone of the currently installed ROM including data, settings, cache. To back up your apps and stuff use Titanium Backup or Copy. To backup music and video and photos, sync that to cloud storage or copy to your pc.

Or i flash the new 4.4.2 Rom with the LG tool. I must not do wipe because I have an older stock rom.

None of your personal stuff will be backed-up.
I have flashed all is Good.
But i have a Problem with the root.
When i press: apply update from adb, its doing nothing.
The recovery says: Now send the package you want to apply to the device with "adb sideload <filename>"....

Oh ok my bad on that part then I was told it clones all your data rom and all. I did a backup and restore
and I had everything from before but I guess its because I didnt factory reset the phone.

Yeap, each phone will behave differently and for this specific G2, Factory Reset will wipe EVERYTHING.

Oh, no no, especially on this G2. Nope, don't do that.
"Wipe" when updating/installing new ROM is
+ wipe dalvik cache // a must regardless of dirty install or clean install
+ wipe data cache (?) // a must regardless of dirty install or clean install
+ wipe data // this will wipe data partition. Must be done when fresh installing new ROM (basically not an update)
+ wipe system // only need in some case, generally, you don't need to do this step
For this G2, if you Factory Reset, you will lose every personal stuff that on the phone, all end-user partition.

Oh ok because for the Mahdi 2.5 rom for G2's he says to wipe "EVERYTHING". So I'm guessing that would be a case
where you need to wipe system as well then? Thanks for the clarifications.
I've been playing around with 5 Android devices and so many custom ROMs. Some do require FULL wipe including format system, some others don't.
Just read the instruction of the ROMs' authors and you should be fine.

A nandroid copies the phone set up as is at the time of the back up. Everything, settings, call history, text messages, contacts, app versions... Everything!

Always wipe system when going from rom to rom. The new rom will install new system stuff.. Never wipe "internal storage"!

1. You can just wipe stock slot and install CM on it. You have to do it fresh and not restore a backup from another slot.

1. No, stock slot, is stock slot... all of that is predetermined space of the partition... If you have titanium backup Pro and a custom launcher... all you will really lose is time. Make sure you are saving to ext. sd just to be safe, backup your user apps, backup again for modified data, and you are fine. For the custom launcher, save your setup. After you flash over, restore. Depending on what/how much you have it could take a couple hours... some games that require extra data, you will still have to download it but, your progress should still be there. Double check if it is a game, as some of them only save via a cloud.

I may be ignorant to your particular situation/apps, but, if your previous device was a an android device, and you saved your contacts to your google I.D. they should be waiting for you, when you reactivate from the wipe/flash. When I got my first droid years ago, I was coming from a crappy flip phone from att, they were able to flash my conacts from the att sim over to my new droid. All my contacts are now saved via google.. so it doesn't matter what phone I boot up.. my contacts are waiting for me.

Keep slot 1 and it's backup til you have the stock slot the way you want it. That way, if you forgot something, you still have what you need til you figure out what you missed and it isn't gone for good.
When you do your wipes DO NOT TOUCH internal storage and micro SDcard... that is all your personal data.. there is where your backups are... you wipe them your screwed.. pictures.. music, all of it is gone, and no one can help you!

I've done what you've said, booted on to the stock ROM, and it's been on the CM boot screen for an hour, I still have the CM installed on stock ROM 1, what would've caused this problem?

Lol.. now you know why you wanted to keep slot 1. Either the stock ROM didn't get fully wiped, the CM11 didn't install properly, or it was a bad download.
So. Just a recap, you are using safestrap 3.65 or higher. When you did your wipe, did you just factory reset, or did you go into advanced wipe and wiped Dalvik cache, android secure, data, cache, and system? The CM thread recommends advanced wipe, and doing it three times!

OK, I am gonna just start from the absolute beginning again:
I am flashing the Razr back to factory default with RSD Lite... Complete
Booting into the stock Android installation... Complete
Rooting device with RazrBlade... Complete
Installing Safestrap V3.65... Complete
Rebooting into Safestrap recovery... Complete
Wiping ROM Slot 1 3 times, wiping the same as 2 steps below... Complete
ADB Push CM onto /sdcard/
Install and configure CM on ROM Slot 1 as a fallback...Complete
Advanced wipe Stock slot 3 times, wiping the Dalvik cache, Android secure, data, cache, and system, this is where I messed up... Complete
Install and configure CM on Stock slot...Complete
Delete ROM Slot 1... I'll delete it once I have the Stock ROM fully finished.

Advanced wipe Stock slot 3 times, wiping the Dalvik cache, Android secure, data, cache, and system, this is where I messed up... Complete
Install and configure CM on Stock slot...Complete
Delete ROM Slot 1... I'll delete it once I have the Stock ROM fully finished.

Not stupidity. Ignorance (for lack of a better word... look up the true meaning if you are taking offense.)
And just so you know, you probably went through a few extra more steps than you needed too. Stock wasn't damaged, just needed to be thoroughly wiped then reinstalled. Also if you had a backup of Slot one, after you did the firmware reflash with RSD then root and recovery, you could have just restored your slot 1 backup.. same thing, less time. Just a couple of tips.
It is certainly good that you aren't afraid to just reflash a fresh firmware though, that can solve a lot more problems than you think. Hone your searching skills, and you are golden
Hi, I'm not exactly new to XDA, however my Note is my first real Android phone. My question is this: If I want to make a backup of the entire phone, so that I can install a new ROM, then restore the phone to exactly the way it was before I installed said ROM, what do I need to select to back up in TWRP? I'm wanting to play with the Lolipop build for i717. I already have a good EFS backup stored separately just in case, so I need to select System, Data, and Boot, and this will save the kernel and the ROM contents, correct? ...and when I restore this backup it will be just like I left it, right?
Also, what do I need to select to Wipe to perform a 'Full Wipe' as is recommended before install?

Use gimmeitorilltell's version of twrp as some specifics have not made it to official version. I've had great results using 2.8.0.0 though I believe some newer versions are working now as well. I backup android secure as well. Not sure if this is necessary, it was the default setting. Wipe is generally accepted as factory reset usually followed by going to advanced wipe and checking cache, and dalvik cache and wiping these again. Then install your new rom zip, gapps zip if required, wipe cache and dalvik cache and reboot. First boot will take a long time. Possibly as long as 5 minutes or more. Once booted let rom settle for at least 10 minutes before adjusting any settings. Good luck.
Edit: Your backed up rom system will restore everything back to the way it was if you desire to go back (installed apps and settings as well).
