1. You can just wipe stock slot and install CM on it. You have to do it fresh and not restore a backup from another slot.

1. No, stock slot, is stock slot... all of that is predetermined space of the partition... If you have titanium backup Pro and a custom launcher... all you will really lose is time. Make sure you are saving to ext. sd just to be safe, backup your user apps, backup again for modified data, and you are fine. For the custom launcher, save your setup. After you flash over, restore. Depending on what/how much you have it could take a couple hours... some games that require extra data, you will still have to download it but, your progress should still be there. Double check if it is a game, as some of them only save via a cloud.
2. I may be ignorant to your particular situation/apps, but, if your previous device was a an android device, and you saved your contacts to your google I.D. they should be waiting for you, when you reactivate from the wipe/flash. When I got my first droid years ago, I was coming from a crappy flip phone from att, they were able to flash my conacts from the att sim over to my new droid. All my contacts are now saved via google.. so it doesn't matter what phone I boot up.. my contacts are waiting for me.

Keep slot 1 and it's backup til you have the stock slot the way you want it. That way, if you forgot something, you still have what you need til you figure out what you missed and it isn't gone for good.
When you do your wipes DO NOT TOUCH internal storage and micro SDcard... that is all your personal data.. there is where your backups are... you wipe them your screwed.. pictures.. music, all of it is gone, and no one can help you!

I've done what you've said, booted on to the stock ROM, and it's been on the CM boot screen for an hour, I still have the CM installed on stock ROM 1, what would've caused this problem?

Lol.. now you know why you wanted to keep slot 1. Either the stock ROM didn't get fully wiped, the CM11 didn't install properly, or it was a bad download.
So. Just a recap, you are using safestrap 3.65 or higher. When you did your wipe, did you just factory reset, or did you go into advanced wipe and wiped Dalvik cache, android secure, data, cache, and system? The CM thread recommends advanced wipe, and doing it three times!

I am flashing the Razr back to factory default with RSD Lite... Complete
Booting into the stock Android installation... Complete
Rooting device with RazrBlade... Complete
Installing Safestrap V3.65... Complete
Rebooting into Safestrap recovery... Complete

Not stupidity. Ignorance (for lack of a better word... look up the true meaning if you are taking offense.)
And just so you know, you probably went through a few extra more steps than you needed too. Stock wasn't damaged, just needed to be thoroughly wiped then reinstalled. Also if you had a backup of Slot one, after you did the firmware reflash with RSD then root and recovery, you could have just restored your slot 1 backup.. same thing, less time. Just a couple of tips.
It is certainly good that you aren't afraid to just reflash a fresh firmware though, that can solve a lot more problems than you think. Hone your searching skills, and you are golden

I've been using Mik's Cyanogen ROMs on my Optimus One. That's going well. But I need to SIM unlock my phone and I need to go back to a stock ROM to input the codes (please let me know if this is incorrect).
Before installing Mik's ROM, I performed a Nand backup. I have boot, cache, data, recovery and system img files. I think I can flash these through recovery and I should be back to stock.
Do I lose my apps and settings by doing this? Do I need to clear any caches?
What about returning to Cyanogen after I unlock my phone... Do I have to root my phone again or will I still be able to flash using recovery?
Using Clockwork, I just backed up my current ROM. I assume I will be able to restore from this later.

to revert back to stock, you must wipe data/factory reset, cache, and dalvik cache. you will lose your settings. as for your apps, you can back them up with titanium backup and restore them after you have restored your backup.

when you restore your backup of the stock rom, you will still have root. i dont think unlocking your phone will cause you to lose root. your root access and custom recovery will still be intact

there might be a problem. what clockworkmod version did you use to make the backup of the stock rom? if i remember correctly, using cwm 3.x.x.x backs up a certain way (and also does not have the yaffs2 suffix) and using cwm 5.x.x.x backs up a different way (with the yaffs2 suffix) so backups may not be "inter"compatible (more info on that here). however, you can just flash back cwm 3.x.x.x right now (you can do it using rom manager), restore your stock rom backup, do the following steps, flash back cwm 5.x.x.x, then restore your backup
1. boot into recovery

I followed your instructions (I downgraded Clockwork before starting) and the 10-20% chance of you being wrong came true... but in a good way
Restoring from the backup brings everything back: apps, settings, contacts, SMSs etc. So it was actually even easier than you suggested since I didn't have to use my backups at all.

Yes... when I was back in stock I could access the unlock menu by entering 2945*#500# on my keypad. The SIM unlock code that I have worked fine. I haven't actually tested with another SIM card but the phone claimed to have been unlocked, so I should be good to go.
I recently rooted/unlocked my Verizon GN2 using Casual, and I am interested in trying my first ROM. I saw the announcement of Jelly Wiz Rom MJ9 4.3 TW (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2564495), and it looks fairly interesting, so I'd like to give it a go. Before I jump in, I want to be sure I've got my process correct. Pulling in information from that thread and the [GUIDE][VZW Edition]How to Root/Rom/Return to Stock the VZW Galaxy Note II! thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207), here's what I think I have to do:
Make sure I've got a good backup
Download the ROM to my internal SD card
Power device off, then hold the Volume up/home/power buttons until I get into TWRP)
Select wipe, then wipe cache. (If I get force close or other issues, boot back to TWRP and wipe data)
Select install, then choose the ROM
Reboot
At this point, I should have the ROM up and running. However, there will be some problem with the modem and WiFi, so I need to fix that by doing the following:
Grab the "Recovery Flashable Modem and WiFi Parameters" from http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23252070760974850
Boot into TWRP
Select install, then choose the Flashable Model and WiFi Parameters zip file
Reboot
Is this all correct? Have I missed anything?
Everything seems to be in good order. You almost always want to perform a full factory reset/data wipe when going between different Roms. I know it's a pain to restore everything back to your liking but you'll regret not wiping 9/10 times. Also, consider keeping the .zips on an external SD Card just in case of accidental internal storage wipe.

Thanks for the tips.
I've done a backup of all my apps (system and user) using Titanium, and I can do another before doing my reset/wipe. In theory, I should be able to restore the apps I want to recover, after I'm all done installing the ROM and the patch, right? So it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.
Or am I being naive?
Well all of your Google apps back themselves up to the cloud, so you're good there. In my experience, it's best to only restore Market Apps, games etc... apps that aren't already synced with your google account. But I've always had pretty good luck with Titanium. I pretty much only ever backed up game progress, far too many hours into angry birds to lose it to a wipe.

That makes sense. Sounds like the smart thing to do is to grab all the apps I actually use, give them time to re-sync, and then use Titanium to restore everyone else's data.

Basically I have very vague idea of what to do. So far, I have backed up my Apps data using Titanium backup and put that backup folder on my PC. I googled around a bit, but the instruction that I found required me to have a SD card reader to backup my things (apps and ROM). So is there any way around that? Also, when wiping my phone to prepare for flashing Cyanogenmod, what type of data do I wipe? (cache, Dalvik, etc.)
Oh, I already downloaded the snapshot version for Nexus 5 and the gapp already. So far all I know is: Backup -> Wipe (which data?) -> flash ROM -> flash gapp -> done. Am I missing something else?

Obviously you must be rooted to use Titanium Backup, but do you also have the bootloader unlocked and custom recovery? If so, you can just put the rom zip and gapps zip on the internal storage, boot to recovery, perform a backup (called a nandroid) and then factory data reset and install rom zip and gapps. Reboot and enjoy. Your internal storage will not need to be wiped unless you have not unlocked your bootloader. At that point, just make sure you drag everything off the internal storage to the PC, then unlock the bootloader, install the custom recovery, and wipe and install.

So all I have to do now is flash the .zip files and not worry about my data? I am rooted and the bootloader is unlock, I just thought that flashing a new ROM would wipe the phone out (Nexus 5 only have one internal storage)
Depends on which data we're referring to. You will need to perform a factory reset which will wipe your phone as far as the accounts, passwords, settings, call log, texts, apps, contacts, etc. But the recoveries are made to skip wipe /data/media which is the internal storage or what the system considers your /sdcard/. Thus not needing to worry about your pics, music, backups, etc. However, it's always good practice to do a back up of anything super important before attempting any major modification to the system to a safe place. In case of emergency, I recommend having the stock img files to restore the phone to stock. This will save time in getting the phone working again should something go wrong. Never fear though, it's very hard to hard brick the Nexus.

Ok, I'm backing the phone up right now (barely made it within the available SD space). So next is wiping the phone, correct? Then I assume after that I can flashing the files. Next is... I have no idea...
K, so next is rebooting to recovery and going to Backup and backing up the rom you're on. Then it might be good to back that up too. After that, go to recovery and perform the factory data reset and then install rom, then gapps, and reboot. It'll take a while longer to reboot than usual. After that you'll be presented with the setup wizard that'll walk you through getting the phone ready again.

Wait, you do or don't have a custom recovery? Because that is needed. I recommend TWRP, but Philz is good as well. But really any of the newest ones will do what you need, just slightly different features and UIs.

Ok, few more dumb questions. After I back the phone up, where does the backup go? If it is the backup of the current ROM, should I transfer it to somewhere safe (like a PC) before I do a factory reset? Sorry, I'm just having a bad anxiety about all of this flashing and wiping and ROMing...
The backup is stored on your /sdcard/ but yes, I was recommending to also copy that to the computer for safe keeping.

I have a Verizon droid RAZR that the screen has cracked in many places. I have bought a new phone and have no plans for ever using this as a phone. What I would like to do is install a ROM over the stock one, not dual boot both. I was also wanting to get rid of all of the phone stuff, no Verizon apps, no SMS, and no phone logs. I would use this like a tablet and would love to save as much space as possible. I don't need the moto docks (I don't have one). Basicly strip this thing down to just bare necessities. Is it even possible to do this? If so is there a ROM that gets great battery life? Thanks for reading my question.

You can flash ROM on your stock slot and then delete the useless apks.
Try any AOSP ROM. It should work fine.

I have downloaded tonyt's aokp rom. I have extracted the rom to its own folder and have looked at the apps in the app folder. System>app. I am not sure which of these I can get rid of. I would like to get ride of anything that is VZW or phone related just keeping maybe the contacts. I dont know what apps should be gotten rid of with out breaking the rom. Sorry I'm a noob. All I have done was flash a few roms, never tried to remove apks before. Do I need a cellphone broadcast for location services like maps and for the in browser location? I have safestrap installed. It will not let me flash a rom over stock rom. I am trying to find a way to get cwm or twrp installed instead.
ok bricked my phone. Device would restart and get the red moto logo, then nothing, blank black screen. rebooted the phone and could not get to safestrap. Used Matt's utility to install jb and reroot phone.
The procedure that I used to install the rom on my stock image is as follows:
1. copied rom zip to micro sd card
2. booted to safestrap
3. wiped cache, delvic, and system
4. installed rom zip through safestrap
5. no errors got success
6. reboot got nothing
I think anything could still happen even if SafeStrap didnt indicate any error after installation, that's why backup is important, also this ;

You will need to do a complete wipe when flashing a new ROM, including /data.
Use latest SS. And make sure the ROM is compatible with the latest SS.

How do I format the internal storage? I have about 3 roms I have running and I have games and apps that I have uninstalled that left behind folders in root folders and some apps that did not get uninstalled also left behind some data. I tried doing a factory reset and also tried using safestrap to wipe internal but it fails. I made a folder in my system folder and put 2 pics in it then factory reset, wiped system data, and checked every box in the advance wipe options and that folder (along with the others) are still there.

Every slot has its own /data partition.
After you activate a slot, wipe /data along with system and cache.
That is called full wipe. It will remove all your apps,files and user settings will be deleted.
Then flash your desired ROM.
Hi, I'm not exactly new to XDA, however my Note is my first real Android phone. My question is this: If I want to make a backup of the entire phone, so that I can install a new ROM, then restore the phone to exactly the way it was before I installed said ROM, what do I need to select to back up in TWRP? I'm wanting to play with the Lolipop build for i717. I already have a good EFS backup stored separately just in case, so I need to select System, Data, and Boot, and this will save the kernel and the ROM contents, correct? ...and when I restore this backup it will be just like I left it, right?
Also, what do I need to select to Wipe to perform a 'Full Wipe' as is recommended before install?

Hi, I'm not exactly new to XDA, however my Note is my first real Android phone. My question is this: If I want to make a backup of the entire phone, so that I can install a new ROM, then restore the phone to exactly the way it was before I installed said ROM, what do I need to select to back up in TWRP? I'm wanting to play with the Lolipop build for i717. I already have a good EFS backup stored separately just in case, so I need to select System, Data, and Boot, and this will save the kernel and the ROM contents, correct? ...and when I restore this backup it will be just like I left it, right?
Also, what do I need to select to Wipe to perform a 'Full Wipe' as is recommended before install?

Use gimmeitorilltell's version of twrp as some specifics have not made it to official version. I've had great results using 2.8.0.0 though I believe some newer versions are working now as well. I backup android secure as well. Not sure if this is necessary, it was the default setting. Wipe is generally accepted as factory reset usually followed by going to advanced wipe and checking cache, and dalvik cache and wiping these again. Then install your new rom zip, gapps zip if required, wipe cache and dalvik cache and reboot. First boot will take a long time. Possibly as long as 5 minutes or more. Once booted let rom settle for at least 10 minutes before adjusting any settings. Good luck.
Edit: Your backed up rom system will restore everything back to the way it was if you desire to go back (installed apps and settings as well).
