U need to check if your Bootloader is Unlocked in case if you want to root your device. Dial *#*#7378423#*#*. Go over at service and check if the bootloader is unlocked or allowed.
There are mainly two different ways to install a custom rom. Through flashtool or through CWM. Go over at Xperia Development Section. You will find your answers, n00b tutorials and official/custom roms/firmwares.

I'm having trouble with fastboot...
I put the phone into fastboot but it will only stay in fastboot for like 10 seconds so I don't get time to install the drivers...

Install the drivers first, then connect the phone. You don't need to have a device connected to install drivers.

Install the latest drivers for adb fastboot, u can find them on the 'Need to know first' thread. Then u can simply got to fastboot mode after flash installation and root your device/flash custom-stock kernels. :highfive:

I did that to but when I go to fastboot the LED will stay blue for like 10 seconds but then the phone will just re-boot... It wont stay on fastboot.
Fixed it... It was because USB debugging wasn't enabled. Would have been nice if that was mentioned in the bootloader unlocking thread lol.

Root, bootloader, cwm and ROM

I can´t get my head around this... some help, please?
I have a rooted Ray with firmware .587. Works fine. I have also used X-parts to install CWM that I know is not "the real deal".
Now I want to install MIUI. For that I have to use a different kernel. Fine! After a lot of hassle I got the latest Flashtool installed and the driverpack. When I enter fastbootmode I get the message that my phone is not rooted... wtf? I have flashed ROM´s for God´s sake...
- FAILED (remote: The Device must be rooted first)

So... my questions now is as follows:
1. Witch version of Flashtool can I use to unlock my bootloader? I can´t seem to find the option in the latest version 0-9.9.0
2. Why does Flashtool say that I´m not rooted? I used this guide to root: http://androidadvices.com/root-sony-xperia-ray-official-ics-404-firmware-tutorial/
3. Can I get permanent CWM installed on my phone? With unlocked bootloader, right?
I have tried the latest SDK but I just don´t understand it... and then I read that Flashtool can both unlock bootloader and flash CWM. For the record.... I have already got the code from SE to unlock my bootloader.
Help, please?

Flashtool means that your bootloader is not unlocked or not rooted. You first have to unlock bootloader in order to flash custom kernel. If you have blue led on fastboot mode then follow the instructions in the Sony's officially way to unlock bootloader . you should have searched more and posted in Q&A section
Sent from my Ray with the FORCE
Allright!
Well, I tried the SE Bootloader Unlocking Tool by quangnhut123 and it worked. I also used it to install Another kernel and so I got CWM. After that Everything Went as a breeze!
Thanx anyway!

preparation to install JB ROM

hello to everyone
i am new to this forum, and i have some questions about JB ROM for xperia Mini Pro SK17i
my xperia mini pro is rooted, and i also have CWM on it, only thing that i have not done is unlock bootloader, and unlocking is allowed
i want to install this JB ROM on my xperia - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032900
now my question is, what i need to do, or to be precise, what to wipe in CWM to install this, and do i need to unlock bootloader first to be able to install JB ROM ??
do i need to wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, or only data ???
i wanted to post in thread for the ROM, but since i am new here, i am not allowed to do so
so if someone is willing to help me, and give me advice what to do i will be gratefuller
i now how to flash kernels and that stuff, but this is my first tryout with custom ROM, and i don't want to mess up my phone
Very easy, but first you need to unlock your bootloader. Use this tool to unlock the bootloader, here. Link for the tool here.
Then:
Flash boot.img (in the zip)
Install Zip (Rom)
Install Gapps
Wipe data (do this first and only once and never do it again)
You can also read my FAQ for JB 4.2.2 here, for clarify some doubts you may have
P.S: Ignores the post by radwan020, he is a little confused.

First u need to install all the drivers in flashtool/dricers
Then start flashtool, select lightning button, choose fastboot mode, and choose your boot.img file
Connect your fone in fastboot mode (vol up and connect)
It should begin flashing.
If u don't want to go through all that trouble, you can see the kernel flasher in my sig

is there any way to install drivers properly on win 8 ??
because i am using them, and drivers always fail to install with flashtool 0.9.10.1, few of them only installs, others no
i tried on my gf laptop with win 7, and there drivers install with no problem, but then i have problem with unlocking bootloader with flashtool
in flashtool it says that my bootloader is unlocked, but my configuration says unlocking available, not unlocked
i did not manage to try this method on her laptop because i did not have enough time - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31376248#post31376248 - but on my laptop, since drivers are not installed properly i am unable to unlock it, when i enter command in CMD to check version of fastboot i am getting waiting for device, and nothing happens
also automated unlocker, SE bootloader unlocker 1.6, also does not work, program freezes when i click unlock bootloader
here are pictures of flashtool and my configuration
Have you installed Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or higher to run stable , as the OP saying? I use that tool on my w7 64bit without any problem. Have you installed the Flashtool-drivers that is inside the SE Bootloader_Unlocking_Relocking tool?

Nope you can easily get it working. Just serach for disabling driver signature enforcement in win 8. Do it and then install drivers.
Also if you are on the go but get access to a pc, you can try kernel flashing tools (see sig) to flash kernels without installing any drivers

[Q] Rooting before or after updating?

Hi there,
I'm new to this world, i've an z ultra with 14.1.B.1.510 with locked bootloader, i've no notification for new update...
I don't need to flash costum roms, just the stock kitkat one, but i'd love rooting to use titanium backup and a few more programs.
It's the better to root with my actual rom or should i update first and then root~?
It's mandatory that i unlock the bootloader?
What's the best/simple way to root this device?
Thks
You don't have to unlock your bootloader to update to stock 4.4.4, you either download official PC Companion software and it will tell you that there is an update for your phone, or download Flashtool install the drivers included in Drivers folder and download a 14.4.A.0.108.ftf flash it through Flashtool and you are done

Thks.
And about rooting? What's the simple method?
if you root before updating, you will lose root, you should update and then root your device, use Towelroot, it works flawlessly on the aforementioned ROM "14.4.A.0.108" I used it my self; Good luck
