hi,
this is my first post, i hope i won't ask (too) stupid questions....
my tablet is a samsung 10.1v. no problems until i upgraded to official 4.0.4: after then, it was affected by wakelocks issues (caused by infamous l2_hsic).
last night i unlocked and rooted my tablet, but now the question is: what rom should i install?
i spent hours trying to get an answer, this is what i got:
OFFICAL HONEYCOMB (3.1)
pros:
- the simpliest way to solve l2_hic issues
cons:
- old software
UNOFFICIAL ROMS
pros:
- brand new software
cons:
- no guarantee to solve l2_hsic issues
- unstable software
i haven't flashed anything yet, but i guess it won't be a pain...
so i'd like to have an attempt with an unofficial rom: if it works and wakelocks disappear, i'm done.
if it does not work or wakelocks are still there, then i can flash official honeycomb...
what do you think about?
what unofficial rom do you suggest to have the best chances to solve l2_hsic wakelocks and have pretty stable software?
many thanks...

Have you tried the official 4.0.4 firmware?
I'm on unofficial AOKP build 6 by djmatt604 right now and it's great

the problem is only for 7500, wifi only ROM's don;t have this problem. The problem is ICS modem problem.
Keep reading the current ROM forums, there aren't that many there is no clear fix yet, some say KK2 modem works for them, some say the problem comes back in few days.
Have you tried contacting samsung support? I am thinking of doing that

hey have any of you guys installed a custom roms on the SGS2 i have the phone rooted and i was contimplating installing a custom rom just wanted you guys information on how safe it is to do so. I was acutally looking for a nice ICS custom rom but apparently i would need one for my kernel(XWKL1). What would happen if i install a custom rom of ICS ment for a different kernel would it brick my phone?
thanks in advance for any information.

probably but you are better off reading and learning before bricking your phone
ICS is yet to be released but we do have a buggy leaked ICS test rom you need to know how to recover before flashing .

Yes it is safe if you know what you're doing and for you that means don't go anywhere near an ICS ROM try a Gingerbread ROM first but before you do that read and read and search and search.
Just practising my speed typing....
wow thanks for such a quick reply so for example if i were to install the Omega rom i would need to get one for my kernel version only right? Then if would need to revert all i need to do is flash my old insecure kernel back and i would be back.
edit: - i didnt see B3311 post. ok i am a lil confused now if i were to install a custom rom ment for a differnt kernel would it work or would i brick my phone?
Kernel version doesen't matter.

Search, Read, Backup and try. Everything you need to know is in the threads. Please read friend that is the only way you get to learn. Look at me. Been reading upon the threads once i had my galaxy s2 just before xmas and i have read upon two months before i got my phone. Now even though i only joined recently i know near enough what i need to do regarding as rooting and flashing roms and themes go. But i still search whenever i can for what i need before i have to ask questions. And most of the time it is right there infront of you. Also another thing if you think the search engine is crap on xda use google. Most of the times it gives you what you are looking for.
Not having a go but today mininum have been two three threads what rom is the best and what one to use and so on. Anyway good luck with the flashing and hope you enjoy whatever you choose

And the key to all the reading is that you are less likely to brick your phone more likely to be able to recover from problems.

True but even with all the reading at least you will feel more comfortable about going about and rooting the phone and flashing a rom. That way at least you do not have to expect others to spoonfeed the information to you. Also when you flash a rom for the first time you will feel great about yourself cause you did it all by yourself than asking others to help you. Hope that makes sense.. and to what you said also you have a great point and i always read your posts when you help people JJe as you are one helpful guy.
Hey, I just contacted Google and advised them to remove the Google search widget that comes standard on every android phone's home screen.
It useless I told them, nobody seems to even notice or use it. Heck, why search when you can just ask?
Still waiting for there reply.

to be clear i never asked which rom was the best and which one to use. I have been reading up on all the different roms available i have narrowed it down to the ICS and the Omega rom and i know how to flash the roms the instructions there are quite clear my only query was about the kernel version for which i could not find a solution. Now i have another question since you guys are saying the kernel version does not matter then why are they country specific and suppose i use a kernel ment for USA would that mean when ics finally got released here for the sgs2 i would need to reflash my phone with the gingerbread 2.3.6 version before i could get the official ICS update from kies?

let me make this clear. Different variants of the s2 hence why you see different forums. If you have an international version then you are safe to flash whatever you want in this forum here. So if you see USA version I would steer clear it as it has nothing to do with the international version if that makes sense. Regarding your other question well yes flash BBL to stock official ROM and that is it

The kernal is not related to country or carrier. The csc is.
Practically all custom roms come with working kernals and modems for the rom.
As for getting the official upgrade, you can reflash your original firmware, but most here just download the new official firmwares from the Intratech thread or sites like sammobile and flash it with Odin. No need for kies. I don't use it at all except for when I first got the S1 in 2010.

I searched the forum and found an updated touchwiz

Hello.
I have just got this phone few days ago.
I am intrested in installing CM9, but i have few questions. If i have understood correctly, I need to install leaked ics before installing cm9 (or any other ics rom). Can this be done with mobile odin, and if can, am I able to keep the root with it? (It has function to keep root)
Also, does cm9 support usb otg? There was no result when i tried to search.
Sorry if these are stupid questions.

if you are already rooted which i gather you are just flash the latest nightly. then flash the last google apps and that is it job done. you can flash all those from recovery.
Make sure you back up your current rom and apps and then go ahead and do full wipe. Data - cache - and dalvik and also format system in mount and storage. Flash the above two i mentioned and that should be it.
Regarding the usb - otg not sure but you can ask in the discussion thread
EDIT: i went from checkrom v6 straight to cm9 if that helps.
No. You don't need to install leaked ICS first. I tried CM9 over the weekend & flashed CM7 first. Follow the instructions on the first page of the CM9 discussion thread & you'll be fine.
If you use the files linked to in the first post in the CM9 thread, they're CWM flashable, so you'll need to have a kernel installed that has CWM in order to flash them. CFRoot kernel will do just fine if your phone isn't already rooted with a kernel that has CWM. There might be Odin flashable files around somewhere, you might have to search for them.
It is rooted, yes. Does it support USB OTG ? Good question. That's one thing I do use a bit on GB & forgot to test when I used CM9. Given USB file transfer doesn't work yet, I doubt it. But ask in the CM9 discussion thread or read the FAQS/Wiki.
So in summary, given you haven't done anything to your phone yet:-
1) Root it with a CFRoot kernel
2) Go to the CM9 discussion thread & follow the install instructions in the first post.

True but once you get the hang of things and how things work with the s2 it is a piece of cake..But i must admit sometimes i get scared on what to do specially if i have to unroot and root again as i have only done it a few times...Once i stayed rooted that is it...i do all my upgrading by flashing custom roms. anyway good luck with cm9 you will not regret using it..let me know how you get on
Haha ;-) You Sir are a noble man
OP - Yep, S is right. CM9 is a very nice piece of work given they've only had leaks & their own considerable hacking talents to work with. It's not quite a 'daily driver' for me at this point, but once sources come out I'll be switching back to it post haste. I'd be surprised if the CM team don't have a stable ICS release long before other devs.

Hi,
i've read the other threads of the ICS leaks around here...
But i'm quite not sure, so please tell me:
what's the newest leak out now?
how to upgrade from other ICS leak? (672.152.27.XT910.RETAIL.EU)
is there any possibility to keep it rooted?
i know, anywhere in this forum will be an answer to every of that questions, but i don't think i'm the only one who doesn't find it / is not sure about this informations.
So maybe someone could post it here? Just short but/and understandable with links?
This would be great

Well,
theresn't such information in the way you want, but you can start from page five on the thread I posted before.
It's the latest leak link and following issues/rooting/updating.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1621014&highlight=%28gsm%29+all+about&page=5
I had stop recommending this leak since many bricked their phones trying to use it.
I'm waiting for the official build to upgrade mine. I'm stock GB 2.3.6 now. This may be helpfull in a near future.
In fact, there was a topic "(GSM) All about ICS leaks" but itsn't in forum anymore. Couldn't find it.
Hope you figure out, following the thread I pointed and make a nice tutorial when you done.
Cheers

You need to install and check all the ROMs for yourself...
Everyone has a different preference and view point of things...best ROM for somebody else isn't the same for you..
Plus it depends on how and what tweaks and mods you want on the phone...
(I like the lockscreen torch/Overclocking)

Hi all,
First of all, apologies If i have not looked hard enough!
I am currently on CM 11.0 which I installed using the neat new CM installer app. I have enjoyed it for a bit, but find it is really draining my battery. Have tried the usual fixes, but this is definitely more of a drain than when I was on stock.
I am looking to install a new ROM that is slightly more modified with battery and performance in mind. The problem is, I haven't flashed custom ROMs the old fashioned way since I had my Desire HD and I am now a little nervous as I have no idea of the procedure involved. I am obvisouly already rooted as I have CM 11.0 installed, but what's next? Is there a good guide somewhere for noobs that I am missing?
Many many thanks for any help!
