Home button lag - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I upgraded to the latest siyah Kernel today and the lock screen wakes very quick now.
One thing I always note though even before the upgrade, when pressing home to quit an app there is a noticeable second or two delay before the app responds to the button press.
Any ideas why this may be and if it's normal?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

it is normal because the home button has to wait if you click again to open S-voice or not , so there is a delay.
you can try to disable "double click to S-voice" , i did , and this delay just gone!

yeah, disabling S-voice double tap works.

Come'on seriously thats kind of a mean answer...
I don't know if that function is available but it would be cool, i would use it.
Homesmack will let you remap the double tap home function. You'll need to find an app that locks the phone, though.

Multitask menu slow

So pretty often when I hold the home button there's like 0,5-2 seconds delay between the vibration and the actual multitask menu to come up. Not like my Galaxy S2 where it always came up immediately. Anyone having this too?

Yup
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
wow it was already a bummer than you had to hold the home button for app switcher but now there is another noticeable delay on top of that?!
I was 50/50 on whether to bite the bullet and preorder my very first android phone. but now I am for sure going to wait till I can test the phone in person at the at&t store.
The lag is caused by the S Voice. "S Voice -> Settings -> Launch S Voice" option needs to be be unchecked. Then the lag should be gone.

How is that connected to multitasking? Anyway... I haven't got this delay but the multitasking menu doesn't feel as smooth as it should... Only time I've experienced the new multitasking as smooth, is with cm9 on sgs2. Sgs2 stock ics is slow as ****

Well s voice is activated by double pressing home button. So the phone is waiting to see if you're going to press the second time to activate s voice, that might cause the lag. By turning it off, it should greatly reduce the lag.
I do not have this issue, but I found that sometimes, when the keyboard is open and you press and hold the home key to open task switcher, the keyboard closes, the task switcher appears for a split second and closes.
This doesn't happen all the time, but once it happens it'll keep happening every time you attempt to open the task switcher with the keyboard open, until you restart the phone.

I belive you are talking about the delay when quitting an app with the homebutton, there is no point in having the system wait for a second press if you still is holding the button. I have turned s Voice of because of the "return to home" lag, that does not help that my multitasking menu sometimes is not showing up as fast as the vibration...
You mean system recognize you want the multitasking menu up after you have hold down the button, gives you a vibration to confirm your command is confimred.. then waits a bit longer just to see if it was a mistake and you instead want s Voice to launch? Although it's even disabled?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Well it doesn't happen always.. And it certainly doesn't have to do anything with s-voice.
Yeah I noticed the same thing too after moving over from the S2

Known thing, use the search function. One thing that helps, disable s-voice, home button otherwise waits for s-voice command.

PS: Does anybody know how to stop s3 showing these tips ?
If you have s-voice set to open on double tap home button, when you press home once, s-voice waits for second press. Once it times out, only then do other home button functions occur.
So if your home button lags, stop s-voice being launched from home

Where can i turn this off?
Within s-voice? Or within language and input? I can't remember. You could Google it or search xda for it. I dont have touchwiz rom any more

You can try ROMs which is based on Samsung jelly bean update, and custom kernels which has many modifications

Double tap the home button, then when you get into S Voice, hit the menu button, and look for the "Double tap home to open".
Watch how much faster your phone is afterwards.

open s-voice> menu> settings> uncheck open via home key and all others!:good:
Try to disable "Window animation scale" "Transition animation scale" and "Animator duration scale"
to disable jsut go to setting>developer options (enable it first if it's disabled) then you will find "Window animation scale" "Transition animation scale" "Animator duration scale" click on each of them and choose "Animation off". You can also try to limit your background process on developer options, and you will see better performance!

did you close the application or just pressing your home button and re-opening the apps ?
in some case, the apps will read your action pressing home button like the exit button, so the apps just killing itself

Did u press the hm button or the back button? If home button, when u switch over to it, it shld resume instead of restarting the app. However if u press back button, when u switch over to the app. It will be new instead of resuming. Rmb if u wan multi task, press hm button. And when u wan to return back to the app. Hold the hm button and find the app and press it. Dun open it thru the apps place.
