Hey all,
My wife is using one of my old phones; the galaxy s2.
I currently use a Galaxy Note 2 with custom ROM and have also had the Galaxy Nexus running on a custom ROM too.
The problem is that is was a long time since i did stuff to the S2, and wanted to touch base with you all before i go ahead and flash a new ROM for the wife.
So here are the specs:
It's a GT-I9100
Currently running 2.3.4 Lite'ning ROM v6.1 xxkh3
Kernel is 2.6.35.11 ninphetamine #20
Recovery is CWM v4.0.0.2
I don't care about having the triangle at boot.
My wife wants Google Now, so the ROM has to be JB.
In about to start some researching, but whatever i find I'll just go and ask about anyways just to confirm, coz i just can't afford to screw up the wife's phone, coz she will kill me!
So is it safe to just flash a new JB ROM, or do i have to do something else first?
Thanks guys

Read the thread devoted to the rom you want to flash. Instructions/requirements will be very clear on the first page of that thread (as they are with any thread devoted to a rom/kernel I've ever seen). Follow the instructions and you won't have any problems. Don't follow the instructions & you will have problems. Simple.
Re: Time to flash 1st ROM in long time
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
The ROM i want to flash is PA 3.15 and it looks like I'm good to go, but the problem i have is that it says to update the recovery, yet in my researching I've read that the recovery is usually part of the ROM, and when looking to update my recovery, i can't update it.
So is it still safe to flash as per the instructions?
I'm just a little worried that what is currently on my phone has been there for a very long time, and what i end up flashing could brick the phone. The ROM on it may have had the recovery part of it and might disappear when i attempt to flash the new ROM...
Am i just being too cautious?

Yes. As per my PP, read the instructions, follow the instructions. If you have more specific queries, ask in the particular thread.

What they mean is, u need to update your stock recovery to any working CWM recovery.
So you should be fine if u go directly to Step 2.
FYI, recovery is a part of the kernel as well as ROM.
And if you're afraid of bricking or things going wrong, why not take a nandroid backup of your current setup?

Hello, first off i have read through loads of pages, been trying to figure things out for days, but the vast amount of info gets a little confusing, and just looking for a little more help, I have s2 i9100P XXLPH, running stock ics 4.0.3, i couldn't find a cf anywhere for it as the one i tried didn't work, it just stayed at the start up screen, so i downloaded the stock and flashed through Odin to bring it back to normal. I then managed to root it using ExynosAbuse, i then installed busybox. (not sure if i got it from google market or on this site) anyway I want to start trying a few roms but want to know the best way to go about this for my phone, Can i just download a SiyahKernel if so, should i download the latest SiyahKernel S2-v6.0beta4, also does this Kernel install cwm for me or do i need to download that and install it separately as i will need to make a nandroid backup. Sorry i know all this info is probably on the site but as i said it just gets confusing with reading so much stuff, i'm not new to custom roms as i put custom roms on my San Francisco and Huawei Ascend G300. Just need a little kick in the right direction
hi, i tried reviewing a bit about your device. i am using SGS 2 I9100.
http://www.droidevelopers.com/f364/11689-galaxy-s2-variants-i9100-i9100g-i9100p-i9100t-i9100m.html
you can click that link atleast to check the difference.... have you tried the DORIMANX kernel for ICS support.... have you read about the brick bug of SGS2, better to be safe than sorry man. atleast try to find the eMMC check apk and install it to your phone before flashing a kernel. though kernels for S2 now have the eMMC_cap_erase=0. atleast try to check if you have the super brick bug on your current rom. mine just had one before you know.... it was resurrected by JTAGG deadboot option.
http://dorimanx.shine.sk/ - here is the list of the kernels of dorimanx... find the one that has ICS support....
then if the kernel worked. flash the rom you want...
note: if you chose to flash the CM10.1, dont forget to download the dorimanx kernel 9.xx, after flashing the rom JB base, flash a JB kernel.

U can flash siyah v5.0.1, and CWM recovery will be installed too. Or u can flash Dorimanx as it also comes with CWM. It doesn't matter which, because after flashing a custom ROM, the kernel and recovery is replaced by those included in that custom ROM.
U can make a nandroid backup after flashing siyah or dori, and before flashing a custom ROM.

And please note that only stock 4.0.4 firmwares with stock kernel are prone to the eMMC Brickbug. I u do have 4.0.4, you can flash a custom kernel like Siyah, and ur safe.

Re: Whats my next step
You can flash any I9100 ROM/kernel, you might lose NFC capability by doing it.
You've got a lot of Custom ROMs Threads in the Original Android Development Forum. You can check other users perceptions on the ROM in cuestion.
Check out the nuke scripts threads, those scripts may come in handy for clean flash as it wipes previous Custom ROMs leftovers.
It's always good to have Mobile Odin installed, enables you to flash stock ROMs very easily and in a safe manner.
You can get confused if you read a bunch of thread about a bunch of subjects.
I suggest you go from specifics topics to specifics issues related to that subject.
Q&A is a great place to learn about any issue you can get.

So as the title says, can you root your phone and then flash a custom Rom without a sim card installed?
I'm getting an S2 either at the end of this week or during the start of next week, but I'm getting it as fully unlocked and without a sim card (I'm getting a sim only contract in less that 2 weeks). I want to install the Siyah Kernel, then flash the CyanogenMod 10.1 Rom (and then Gapps, of course).
So, is it safe to do this without a sim card installed? Of course I'll upgrade the phone the Jelly-bean first before flashing anything (I've looked a lot into this). I've seen a thread on here where the members said it was safe, but I saw on another website that it caused problems. So sorry if this is a noobish question or whatever, I just wanted to make sure of everything.
Also,
Are Siyah Kernel and CyanogenMod 10.1 a good match? I'd make another thread for this, but seeing as I'm making this one, I may as well just include it as a quick question here
And,
I'm getting the S2 for a good price (£205 because of a store nearby trying to get rid of the excess stock that they still have). And I've pretty much got my eyes set on this phone because it's plenty enough for me. Just thought I'd throw that out there before someone tries to suggest another phone to me, because I've kinda got my sights set on the S2, haha :')
1.Yep, it is safe to flash without a sim card installed.
2.Try it yourself and see what kernel suits you best

1. Alright, thanks
2. If I don't happen to like it, can I just change it by flashing a new one as I would do originally? Or would I have to do anything extra now that the custom Rom had been installed?
Let me add a minor point too..
When ur planning to mix different roms and kernels, be careful u choose kernels which support the roms.
In ur case, if u want to use Siyah, choose the correct version that works with CM10.1.

I'll have the phone by the end of next week at the *very* latest, so I'll give you all an update when I've received it and flashed it
So a couple of days ago i decided i was going to root my phone, the root worked somewhat but there were things what it was interfering with on my device so i went and got the newest kernel i could find which was way different to the one i had before. After updating to the newest kernel my phone worked perfectly for a couple of hours, so i go to boot up the simpsons tapped out and the phone restarts to the normal boot screen and just freezes. The phone has been locking on that screen every time i boot it up now, i have tried redoing the kernel and odin says it was successful but it still boots into a frozen screen. Anybody had a similar problem or might know what i can do? I would greatly appreciate the help. :highfive:

Just in case i messed the timeline up, phone came with ice cream sandwich, rooted ice cream sandwich, updated to jellybean, run simpsons tapped out, phone dies and wont boot up.
Blame it on the simpsons then.
Flash ICS (4.0.3), it's safer/easier to root.

Hello there i want to ask few questions about ReVolt RoM(i cant comment in the ReVolt thread)-
Is the RoM Support Hebrew and Align right text?
And how do i install the RoM?
Which kernal is needed? how i do this root with the kernal?
Can someone explain me all the steps please?
and i searched and didnt found something that can help me for this RoM
@johnhany97
Read the relevant thread ? The instructions for that particular rom couldn't be clearer; they're even in large/bold font. Nobody here is going to regurgitate these steps when they're already in the thread.
As to your other questions, the answers are also in the thread. If you want to use the rom, it's up to you to do the reading/learning, nobody here is going to hold it for you & shake it when you're done

Bro if i wasnt read it i would ask here... think a little bit.
Nothing there for hebrew and align text to right language.
The insturcations are really poor since its my first rom installation i would like to get more information instead
Wipe Cache
Wipe indvlaink
and more...
Any help please?
The instructions are poor ? You're ****ting me ?! They couldn't be more clear. And re: your other questions about language/text alignment, you've read every post in the thread (as opposed to simply doing a search, which won't give you the info you need because XDA search is crap) have you ? (I don't believe you)
Why not make a nandroid backup, flash the ReVolt ROM and see for urself what features it has or hasnt got?
If ur unhappy, do a nandroid restore.

First, are you rooted? If yes, which method? If no, search for "how to root <your phone>"
Then i recommend reading the sticky thread in this sub-forum "New here? READ THIS THREAD FIRST. What Is Recovery & Download Mode?"
Other things i recommend is watching rooting guides in youtube, preferrably from zedomax.
Now go to revolt thread again and you, hopefully will know the basic stuff which is written right there inorder to flash the ROM.
As MistahBungle has said, the thread contains relevant information for a proper installation of the ROM.
Even if it doesn't say about the hebrew text you could try it for yourself and find out.
Cheers

U don't need to root a custom ROM mate, because it already is.
And custom ROMs come with their own kernels, so u don't need to flash another (unless u specifically require a different kernel).
