[Q] Phone not starting, need help. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So a couple of days ago i decided i was going to root my phone, the root worked somewhat but there were things what it was interfering with on my device so i went and got the newest kernel i could find which was way different to the one i had before. After updating to the newest kernel my phone worked perfectly for a couple of hours, so i go to boot up the simpsons tapped out and the phone restarts to the normal boot screen and just freezes. The phone has been locking on that screen every time i boot it up now, i have tried redoing the kernel and odin says it was successful but it still boots into a frozen screen. Anybody had a similar problem or might know what i can do? I would greatly appreciate the help. :highfive:

Got an idea for you, flash a stock ROM.

Just in case i messed the timeline up, phone came with ice cream sandwich, rooted ice cream sandwich, updated to jellybean, run simpsons tapped out, phone dies and wont boot up.

Blame it on the simpsons then.
Flash ICS (4.0.3), it's safer/easier to root.

Odin says it was successful... The phone restarted into the screen and stayed there again... Im getting pretty bummed out at this juncture. I have no idea what to do.

4.0.3 right?
Go to recovery and perform a wipe data and cache, then reboot and see.

That seems to have worked :highfive: , im just wondering if the jellybean i had before is stable on the galaxy s2 because i quite liked that when it was working. Thanks to both you guys .

Now root it and flash jb via mobile odin pro if you wanna keep root.
Or just flash jb via odin and then flash philz.

All thanks should go to @gastonw!
Which version of JB did u have previously? You can flash that again if you want. Or u can flash XWLSS or XWLSN. They seem to be good and stable.

Thank you very much, but I've already solved my problem flashing an unbranded original firmware.
Now I've got only a problem : the updates via Kies are no more available. Why? The firmware is a stock firmware!

I've had the pleasure of owning a Samsung smartphone since October 2010. With that, please trust me when I say this: Kies is rubbish! The amount of stuff this program installs into your PC to do what's easily done by connecting via Mass Storage mode? Nuts! The amount of time it spends trawling the net and using up vital battery power while it runs in background on your phone? Insane! The best way to have a i9100 (or any other Android device) running is with a custom ROM - that way you can at least remove any app or 'bloatware' you don't want before you bring the phone to life.
My advice? In short: totally clean out and factory reset your phone, flash the stock i9100 SamMobiles JB release using Odin, root your phone, choose a custom ROM that you like the look of, flash it in and then discover the brilliance of the i9100 that lies beneath the stock standard offering...

I agree with you, but there is a reason why I have to keep my phone with original software.
Is there a way to make it compatible again with Kies updates?

Yes, install a Samsung-based custom ROM.
As for a reason why you have to keep your phone with Original software, is it a phone supplied by your employer? If so, then it's Yours to do as you please with, because use of the device is part of your salary package. Other than that, all which is altered by installing a custom ROM can be restored, simply by doing a nandroid backup of the original firmware before installing the new ROM...

Stuck at bootloop after nandroid restore

So today i felt like restoring a previous nandroid backup i made a year ago. i was on 4.0.4 stock+siyah and wanted to go to jelly bean if im not mistaken (cant remember for sure tho). Thing is i tried to wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, but still, i cannot get rid of this bootloop. any ideas ? thanks
PD: id prefer not flashing a stock rom with odin nor restoring back to my other backup if possible
That may be what you'd prefer, but think about it logically given what you've already tried/what hasn't worked. You don't have any other option.
Am confused..
Is the OP trying to restore 4.0.4 or is he already on it?

Since solving the bootloop is more important now, I suggest you do what MistahBungle said..
Flash a stock JB firmware via Odin, then if bootloop is overcome, you can root it and restore your JB backup.

Don't you think for someone accustomed to using Kies, Odin would sound more easier?

It doesn't get easier than mobile odin.
It's safe, fast and if things goes south you still got odin to save the day.
If you flash via Odin, you only got Odin to save your ass.
Mobile Odin won't let you flash if you're under 50 % of juice.
It would check the signatures in case you've got a corrupted file.
It'll do all the flashing by itself, no stuggling with cables and drivers.
It's the sh*t for flashing stock ROMs.

when i rooted my phone galaxy s2 i9100 to omega 20.1v ihave problem 'E:signature verification failed'...
now what to do for my phone and get the update...
That's because u tried to do that in stock recovery mate.
U need to install a custom recovery like CWM.
It is obvious u are new to rooting and flashing. Shall I give u some links to help you get started?

[Q] Root and flash Rom without Sim Card?

So as the title says, can you root your phone and then flash a custom Rom without a sim card installed?
I'm getting an S2 either at the end of this week or during the start of next week, but I'm getting it as fully unlocked and without a sim card (I'm getting a sim only contract in less that 2 weeks). I want to install the Siyah Kernel, then flash the CyanogenMod 10.1 Rom (and then Gapps, of course).
So, is it safe to do this without a sim card installed? Of course I'll upgrade the phone the Jelly-bean first before flashing anything (I've looked a lot into this). I've seen a thread on here where the members said it was safe, but I saw on another website that it caused problems. So sorry if this is a noobish question or whatever, I just wanted to make sure of everything.
Also,
Are Siyah Kernel and CyanogenMod 10.1 a good match? I'd make another thread for this, but seeing as I'm making this one, I may as well just include it as a quick question here
And,
I'm getting the S2 for a good price (£205 because of a store nearby trying to get rid of the excess stock that they still have). And I've pretty much got my eyes set on this phone because it's plenty enough for me. Just thought I'd throw that out there before someone tries to suggest another phone to me, because I've kinda got my sights set on the S2, haha :')
1.Yep, it is safe to flash without a sim card installed.
2.Try it yourself and see what kernel suits you best

1. Alright, thanks
2. If I don't happen to like it, can I just change it by flashing a new one as I would do originally? Or would I have to do anything extra now that the custom Rom had been installed?
Let me add a minor point too..
When ur planning to mix different roms and kernels, be careful u choose kernels which support the roms.
In ur case, if u want to use Siyah, choose the correct version that works with CM10.1.

I've checked, and Siyah Kernal version 1.9.1. works fine with CM 10.1
I had checked before but it never hurts to check again just to make sure, eh? After all, I don't want to mess up my phone on the first day
