[Q] How to root? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Okay, so after waiting for God knows how long for Jellybean, I finally decided to root my phone.
But, alas, I have NO IDEA how to do this.
I've tried researching it, but everything I find makes no sense whatsoever.
Does anyone know where an easy, step by step on how to root is?

Follow one of these sets of steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894

Just remember folks that reading all the sticky threads (those are the threads that appear at the top of the threads) is something we're ALL expected to do. Even and especially if you're new here. Also searching using google with xda key words and using the site search function are a must. Not tying to be rude, but we were all new once. Let the new users be an example to other new users.

I figured it out.
Thanks guys!
And yeah, shoulda read the stickies ahead of time.

[Q] Unroot with Mac for Noobs

Noob here,
I've looked and looked and haven't seen anything definitive. I have a Samsung GS II (I-777). Someone had rooted my phone for me a while back but now I want to un-root it. I only have access to Mac and have NO idea how to. Everything on here seems to be written in a different language lol. What's the easiest and most simplest way to do this? Sorry if this is repetitive. Thanks in advance!
Rooting is such an easy proccess. Looking at you, I would not recommend it doing by yourself. Rooting will not get you on any legal issue other than warranty cancelation. If you still insist look at the stickied threads in this forum. I myself would like to explain it, but I can't explain it better.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA
Not sure if a virtual machine of Windows would work but I would give that a try if your hell bent on un-rooting.
My question is why do you want to reverse a good thing?

What I meant was that rooting is easy to do. And nothing negatives comes out of it unless you want to get the phone back to store... Since it's a mac and he doesn't have much knowledge of rooting, just let it be.

Well, "looking at you" made me go Whaaaat??? myself. Odd snap judgement from reading one post, which was pretty well phrased from what I saw.
Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434020 which should help - and this thread says it should work with MacOS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432. You'll need to do some more searching and learning (start with the sticky at the top of the general forum). If you don't feel confident doing this, then don't. You really aren't going to gain anything by it unless you have a specific need. Or expand on what you're looking for and maybe we can help.
BTW if you don't use it, the difference between root and unrooted is zero AFAIK. Root just lets you do more, but it's still stock i777 if that's all "someone" did.
Well, the thing is, the root that this person did (not me lol) has disabled my wifi. It's the ZedomaxStockKernel. I did some research on this and it seems that using this method renders the wifi useless. I clearly don't know what I'm doing but will read more in regards to this. Again, I've had the phone rooted for about a month now and I haven't done anything different. (Maybe because I don't know how) I wouldn't mind leaving it rooted but if I could fix the wifi issue, that would be great and then maybe I can learn further about this whole root thing. Reading through the forums though, most people rooting have Windows and not Macos. Which kind of leaves me feeling alone lol

Go into the siyah thread (you can do it on your phone). Download the ATT tar file. Open up mobile odin, select kernel. It will open a window to find your kernel. If you download from the xda app it will be in tapatalk_downloads I think. Select siyah_2.1.13 (or whatever it is). Go down to the bottom where it says flash firmware, hit it. If done correctly, the phone will reboot and everything will be awesome
I'll keep an eye on this thread tonight in case you have further questions.
Forgot to mention, the siyah thread is here in the i777 forum, more specifically look in the development section. The download link is in the first post.

Okay I understood almost everything you wrote! Let me start by saying thank you! Couple of questions so I don't screw something up!
1. Should I download the .tar file directly to my phone? Would that be easiest?
2. I can't seem to find the thread in the development section, care to spoon feed me?
Lastly, when I googled Siyah it gave my a website but I don't know if that's reliable or not.
Thanks!!
Found it!! Will try today and update!
Did everything exactly to the T. Worked but wifi is still not accessible. It scans for wifi but before anything happens, wifi turns off and then nothing. Any other thoughts on this? This is tough...

Not to sound mean... But if you are asking about basic stuff, you might want to:
- Read some threads before you start flashing
- use the search function
- follow the thread instructions following the above two suggestions.
Try to troubleshoot yourself first... All your issues are solvable by searching.

I agree with this POV.
If someone is having trouble simply installing/updating CWM, they absolutely need to do more reading, or chances are they will badly mess up their phone.
Using ODIN and installing CWM are rooting 101, and I would advise any SGS3 user to make sure they know these 2 bits of software inside and out, before jumping into CM9/CM10, as both are not fully stable, and will require additional knowledge to get them working correctly, if it is yet possible given the current build states of each.
If CWM installs, or ODIN flashes are not pieces of cake for you, you should probably pick a different ROM until they are.
Yes we all started somewhere, but a big tip from experienced users to noobs, is to learn how to swim, before jumping in the deep end. And CM9/CM10 is definitely the "deep end" of the Android pool, at least until the builds reach RC status, if not at least beta, as things wont work, or are yet to come upstream.
It takes as much time to flame as it does to post helpful advice. How do you want to be remembered?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Telling some one that cant swim, how to jump into the deep end, is not my idea of "helpful" advice.
Sometimes the "helpful" advice is.. "you are not ready yet"
It may not be what the person wanting to jump into the deep end wants to hear, but it may save their phone, until they know what they need to, to get where they want to be.

I know the sense of panic you have when you trash your phone, here's hoping some users understand that by searching first, almost 98% of the answers are out there.
That being said, I am willing to help out, given what I know, but I am willing to bet there are posts already done that lay it out there, step by step, on how to recover from this...???
Again, to anyone seeing this, not trying to be a **** here, but the search function really has tremendous value when looking, don't just try one term, use several variants of terms when searching. I bet you'll find something, heck..you may find out something off your first search topic that'll get you there better or quicker.

I take it you have the SGS3 for AT&T, correct?
What exactly do you need a guide for, upgrading CWM?
I take you are rooted, what version of CWM do you have, and what version are you trying to upgrade to?
What version & build of CM are you trying to install, the file name should give the specifics?
Does the ODIN count matter to you?
okay download CWM for your phone from :http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Rename it to recovery.img , and copy the file to your phone's internal /sdcard
Grab android terminal emulator from the play store and run the same commands starting with su in the box below.
just type: su
then
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18

Noobs

I thought I'd do essential topic for Noobs out there, okay well in here or outside if you're outside.
So these are the essential things you must do after getting your shiny new scratch free powerhouse mobile.
1. Root your mobile
This is essential if you want to learn what your phone can do and believe me it can do loads, I've still not learned everything and already I'm amazed.
2. Download the xda toolkit, I have no link but do a search here. It's like a step by step to rooting and the other things I'll mention.
3. Install directory bind as it will enable you to move some of your apps to your sd micro card if you have bought one and buy one if you haven't it will help.
4. Learn about roms and kernels and visit the developers forum as these are great for modifying your mobile the way you want it, I'm turning mine into a mini entertainment system. It would be great if could modify the other things like the s voice to programme it to say what you wanted it to every time you wanted to do a task and add a sexy woman's voice too.
5. Once you have modified it the way you want and made it your very special friend (okay I'm exaggerating) do a nandroid backup as it will back up the way you have your device and it's quite simple to do.
This is to make sure that if at some point you have to do a factory reset and believe me you will as I had to do one today when this annoying message kept popping up to say something about a Google gapps isn't working so I just gave up and did a full wipe, it doesn't save game sd data but if you've already learned how to use directory bind you won't worry about that.
Oh and install the xda app as it's much easier to to type than using a browser and easier to find your way around this site.
6. Do a search about the things I've talked about as there are step by steps to help you along the way.
I'm sure I've forgotten some things but these are things I've found are essential.
That's all I've learned really so I've run out of numbers.
I'm off now to learn some new things.
Farewell my fellow Noobs.
OP your telling people how YOU like to use your device. All of what you listed is only essential if that's what you want to do. And if you do want to do it, there's guides walking you through all the steps. No need to tell "noobs" what they should be doing. I know users on here that stay stock non-rooted..
OP, I applaud your intent but I am with Coreym on this one.
Any advice to noobs that starts with '1. Root your mobile' is staggeringly misguided and borderline reckless. There are increasing numbers of noobs on this site for whom 'walk in a straight line' would be a challenge.
If you really want to help noobs perhaps your advice would be better rephrased as follows:
Do nothing for now
Read
Keep reading
Read some more
When you think you understand re-read everything to ensure you do understand
Do the thing

Samsungnooby,
Thanks for your well intentioned post.
The posters above you Coreym & Gustopher are right, maybe edit your post with Gustopher suggestions would be sounder advice.
I've had my phone 3 weeks, on the second day I leaned how to root it and I've learned and done everything else.
Found it all pretty straight forward to learn it all and do them, maybe I'm just a quick learner.
Don't know what else there is to learn.

I don't know why some people insist on calling n00bs out for everything. They too were once a noob. Your question is fair- there are two things you can do:
1. Turn on GPS and try to navigate somewhere, then go into Settings/More Settings under Wireless and Network/Mobile Networks/ and change the Network mode to CDMA/LTE to Global or vice versa. See if that works.
OR
2. Reflash back to Stock or whatever ROM you have had a GPS lock on and establish a lock. Then nandroid flash back to whatever ROM you want (i.e. JediROM). Try to navigate- most likely it will work.
I would advise though, hitting the Crtl F key... :highfive:

Really the way some noobs are treated they are turned away from the community. I have been guilty of *****ing out noobs before as have most of us. It gets very old to answer these questions every day when people could have used the search function to find the answer.
On the same hand the reason some of the noobs dont even come to XDA and screw up their phones by using roms and rooting methods is because of the attitude here at XDA and the way noobs get treated. Im not saying every noob gets treated badly but when the first post tells them to search without trying to answer the question that gives a initial impression of an assholish community.

And add the fact that there are millions of posts to sort through, you sort for one question and it pops back 30 threads. Lol

Very true, but you can choose to sort thru one sub forum at a time and that geta rid of the majority of the posts that dont apply to you. Of course most noobs are confused by the way XDA is set up, I was confused by it a bit when I joined but it was a bit more disorganized then than it is now.
The reason most of us get a little annoyed with noobs and repetitive posts is when there are 3 posts that are the same thing one right after another and there is an answer in one but they didnt bother to even look at the Q&A section before posting.
The worst part though is when there are posts in thr Development sections, when I joined there was no Q&A sub forums and I still had enough sense to not post in Development.
Those of us who do try to donate our time and answer questions for new members need to leave our attitudes at the door when we start helping them unless it is warranted, and there most definitely are times that attitude is warranted. They are there asking for help because they honestly dont know what to do or don't understand a process and they asked for help not attitudes for posting a question in the Help and Q&A Thread. Its really giving the sitenas a whole a bad name because of the attitudes that some members have towards noobs even when they follow all the rules and have legitimate questions. I hate saying that about XDA because I love the site so much but it's the honest truth.

T-Mobile L9

I have the U.S T-Mobile LG L9 I've spent couple of days trying to root the phone, I searched the threads here and online but every root method found was too complicated for a NOOB,I know some of you are rooted but some us are not and tried to follow directions but lost on the way.
All I am asking here if anyone can some how simplify the steps for us or have a video showing the process.
I do not know if this means any thing or helps but I used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258633
And it pushed Super Su to the phone but did not root.

Thanks for the link but that is the exact one I am talking about and the one I spent couple of days trying to use but failed.
I agree with you. Its kind of complicated for us noobs. Maybe if I really focus and learn the steps I would succeed but its just too much steps. I heard Verizon Galaxy S4 has a simple root method.. i hope someone finds a simple root guide for us.

Too many steps to follow I tried I can not focus more than I tried lol.
It may look like a lot of instructions but it's not too bad once you get going.

Its better if you study the guide. You won't freak out on the forum when something happens. When you follow step by step others will be able to assist as needed when you can convey where you're stuck. "It doesn't work" will get you more questions than answers.

What's the problem you're running into on step 8? Can you not run the batch file?

It will not help you to root your phone

What you need to do is read all of it first then try to root. The first page gets your phone ready for rooting. The second page gets your computer ready for rooting. The right before you start flashing the kdz file you have to set up the magic trick (replacement of the bin file). Good luck

Tried all the current methods to unlock bootloader and root. None worked and I am no noob. Some of the steps the phone doesn't respond how the guides say it will.....I'm starting to hate this phone. Lol

I know it's frustrating but the method works. I've done it several times on this phone. Listen why don't you just concentrate on one thing instead of two. Go step by step regardless if you thing you don't need it just go through it. Rooting is not hard but it's not very easy either. Sounds like your experience is getting in the way of your progress. That's just my opine. Good luck!
