Status bar missing - won't come back - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an HTC Desire GSM running MildWild CM 8.0.
Until recently I had no problems, everything was working fine, but then when messing around with my homescreen and launcher (nothing major, just changing layouts) I realised my status bar had gone and couldn't find any way to get it back.
Here's the strange part though - I'd recently taken a nandroid backup, when I know the status bar was there, so I restored to that and the status bar was still missing.
Then, as a last resort, I backed up all my apps with Titanium Backup, wiped all partitions and reinstalled the ROM. The status bar is still missing.
I figure it must be to do with something on my sdcard since everything else is fresh, but for the life of me can't figure it out.
Any ideas?

Have you tried a different rom then gone back to your current one?
It sounds like the SystemUI.apk in your /system/app partition is corrupt.

[Q] Titanium Backups Batch function not working

I have always used ROM Manager to do everything, but seeing that might not be the best way to do things..I have been having some other problems with restoring, and talked about it on another forum, but can't post the link here yet.
So, my nightlys said it is time to upgrade, so I am going to completely back everything up with TB, and fire it all up to dropbox. All of my system settings are 100% the way I want them... I also clicked the beta migration option in the preferences, hoping that would help me.
Step 1 - Backup all user apps + system Data
Step 2 - Sync to Dropbox
Step 3 - Boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery, and do everything manually, not through ROM Manager
Step 4 - Clear cache and Dalvik
Step 5 - Run zip from SD Card
This time, it seemed like everything went as planned. When I started the phone back up, all the apps were in the same spot, and wallpaper was the same. Although, the first time, when the screen timed out, I couldn't turn it back on. Pulled the battery, and all is working fine now.
Step 6- went into TB and did a batch restore of all apps and data, but only clicked the green items. From reading somewhere else, it is only wise to do the green items, not the red, so that is what I did. Then reboot for all to take effect.
This is where I am confused. None of my data is restored. For example, I use K-9 Mail, and the settings aren't restored by the batch. But, if I go to that app, and hit the restore data, then it restores it fine. So, for me to do all my apps, the batch function isn't working, I have to go through and do 15-20 apps manually.
So, what am I doing wrong here? Why isn't the batch operation working properly for me?
Edit - Something else I noticed that didn't restore properly was any of my ring tones. Not a huge deal, but I thought might be worth mentioning in this dilemma.
So I assume you are on CM7 as you refer to nightlies.
You say that you wipe cache/dalvick cache and install. Then when you reboot all your apps are in the right place?
Then why on earth would you want restore your apps on top of the existing apps with TB? Maybe that is causing the problem. AFAIK upgrading with a nightly shouldn't touch your installed apps.
Did you check the app settings before restoring with TB?
As for the ringtones, I always had that problem when using CM7, just got used to fixing them after installing each nightly.
Hope this helps.
What version of TB are you using? I was having a similar problem doing restores on v3.9.0.1 and was having problems doing batch recovery with my SGS2. The status bar would come up but wouldn't successfully finish. I then upgraded to 4.0.0.0 and everything seems to work.. might give that a try if you're using an older version.

Yes, sorry, I am running CM7, but using the nighties.
As far as the apps, that's why I think I am doing something wrong. Last time was the first time everything was there, every other update, it was like I was starting off with a new phone. No app, no data, nothing. A brand new fresh start.
I will try it again in a few minutes and hope for the best..
Thanks for helping out with this one..

I am currently using the Pro, 4.0.2. It just seems that I have to refresh all the data for each app by themselves, but all at once won't work.
Upgrading my nightly now, so keeping my fingers crossed that it will work.

[Q] Factory reset question

I am rooted on stock touchwiz rom. I have done a few tweaks such as the swapping of internal memory for external, editing some CSC feature files to enable the sound on/off menu in camera. I've enabled the multi-view for all my apps and have added the wifi toggle my notification dropdown.
After not having an issue prior, I noticed the other day Instagram force closes every time I try to open it and does so immediately. I have deleted and re installed many times and several different ways, i.e with Titanium Backup. I haven't been able to find any real suggestions on how to fix it, so was thinking of doing a factory reset. I have backed up everything using Titatanium and plan on using that to restore my phone back to how it was.
I know I wont lose root after the factory reset, but will I lose all those other tweaks that I mentioned in the beginning? And will restoring from a Titanium backup just re-apply the problem that caused Instagram to force close thus putting me back to square one? Has anyone else had any trouble with Instagram crashing?
Thanks in advance guys!

I don't use Instagram so I can't comment on experiencing crashing from it. I can say that I've had some issues restoring apps with Titanium Backup. More often than not though, when I re-installed, the problem was solved. If you do a factory reset, you'll lose any adjustments you've made, except for adjustments that are included in the rom firmware itself.
Based off of the tweaks you listed, you may just want to check out Bean's Revision 4 (flashable using TWRP). Just make sure you've unlocked your bootloader. Bean's REV 4 has the option to automatically run all of the tweaks you added manually. It's actually a really nice, clean rom.

Hey thanks for the insight. I know I should probably unlock my bootloader. After coming from a Nexus, I got burned out from flashing ROMs and keeping up with the latest builds so with this phone I told myself I'm gonna try and keep it stock, which progressed to just rooting, then doing more and more tweaks. I'm a sucker for tinkering.

[Q] Back up on sd card not showing

I rooted my xperia x10 mini around a year ago, and all was fine. I recently unlocked the bootloader, and decided to try flashing a new rom and kernal as Sony refuse to do any further updates. I backed everything up on titanium back up, videos, contacts, apps etc. And also followed the instructions to do full back up when I flashed the new rom. I followed everything to the letter, but when the new rom was installed, I could find no contacts, music, apps or anything? I thought the best option was to use cwm and restore back? That looked as if it had gone ok, but there was a message at the end to say something? img? could not be found, and it didn't revert back, just hung at nAa screen, and would do nothing else.
After reading a few threads, I thought I'd go back to SE stock firmware - better than a dead phone! But although the sd card is showing all my back ups, including titanium back up, nothing is showing in the phone apps, or folders, all my contacts are missing, pictures, notes, everything :crying:
How do I get everything back to where it shoud be?? It may be a stupid question, but I hope you can offer some advice please.
The phone is rooted again. Thanks in advance from a newbie flasher
Did you restore your backup using Titanium again then?
The other way is to do advanced restore from CWM and choose data only.

I wasn't sure how to restore from Titanium, but I've now downloaded Titanium backup app, and it has restored some of the things I lost, not everything :crying:
It hasn't restored any of my text messages and I have quite a lot of pictures missing. Is there anyway to get messages or pictures back?
Thanks :fingers-crossed:

Pictures are usually stored on the sd-card, so they won't get affected if you change your rom or kernel, not sure what happened with that, but the best way to get everything back would be to use CWM and choose advance restore to get your data back I suppose, it will restore everything that was on internal memory.
The reason you got stuck at the nAa-kernel logo when you restored from cwm previously is because you also restored your old rom, which doesn't run with the nAa-kernel.

It may be that just the thumbnails of those pictures are messed up, not the pictures itself. I would suggest copying your pictures to a folder on your computer, deleting them from sd-card and open the gallery, so it can update it's thumbnails (it will delete them all). If you then move back your pictures to your sd-card it will generate proper thumbnails again.
The txt-messages should be in your CWM-backup.
I don't know if you had CWM installed on your phone before you flashed the kernel, and what kernel you used when you made the backup. It can be a bit tricky if you tried JellyBean, but not impossible. I need a bit more information from you to be sure about how to go about that.

Hi. Yes, I installed CWM before hand, and did a complete back up, I used the miniCM7 robyn rom and the nAa-2.6.29.6-nAa 14 kernal. I had considered jelly bean, but thought I'd just start with this one, before working my way up! Someone suggested ST15i 4.2.0.A.62 but it didn't sound right for the X10mini? I only bought the phone 18 months ago, so its a shame there are no further updates.
I did try to restore through the advanced setting on cwm, but it didn't work, I had the same message as before about something being missing.
I noticed another thread about a similar problem, a mismatch between numbers?? Not too sure, but it sounded similar to the problem I had.
At least I have back most of my pictures Thanks for your help.

hmm, it sounds almost like your sd-card is experiencing some problems, maybe you could copy the whole thing to your computer and reformat it. but i don't think the backup will be valid anymore.
The number mismatch is the md5-checksum, The backup calculates a number when the backup is created, which is stored alongside your backup.
The restore function then uses the same method to create a checksum from the backup-file and compare it to the number created when the backup was made. If they don't match, the most likely option is a corrupt backup file, which is a pain.
And no, the st15 is the 2011 xperia mini i think, you better stick with E10-kernels and robyn-ROMS for the x10mini (if it doesn't have a hardware keyboard)

[Q] System UI has stopped ViperDNA 1.3.1

Went through the install of Moonshine today and ViperDNA 1.3.1. Finished installing all of my programs and started tweaking settings. I'm now getting "Unfortunately, system UI has stopped" messages, and have lost the status bar. I've tried several reboots, but no luck. Is there anything else I can do to get this working again other than another full wipe and reinstall?

I've seen that error when I change the dpi below 400 when using rosie.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 4 Beta
You can try a dirty-flash of the same ROM, maybe to reinstall the System-UI apk.. It sounds like there's an error that resulted of a tweak you changed.
Do you remember what tweaks you did?
I remember having this problem when I changed the DPI too much too.
Sent from my DNA using Tapatalk 2
I don't recall doing anything to DPI adjustments. I did add Nova Launcher, but it worked fine for at least an hour or so while I was installing apps.
Anyhow, I tried the dirty flash, but that didn't fix it. I wiped and reinstalled and everything seems to be fine now.
I just managed to crash the system UI again and can't seem to get it to work again after a reboot. I had clicked on venom tweaks, then profiles. I clicked on tweak defaults and then the status bar disappeared and the "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped" message came up. Any ideas how to fix this? If it involves a reinstall (again) of the ROM, I think it is going to be time to try something else.
Format system. When I was getting system ui FC I went into recovery and formatted system. Seemed to fix the issue. I've included that step in my flash routine when flashing a new ROM now

System is formatted as part of the ROM install.

There has been two additional posts to the ViperDNA thread in the developer section that ran into the same problem I did by going into tweak deafults. Unfortunately, I have too few posts to be able to add a "me too" reply at this time. One person fixed by doing a TWRP restore, but the only backup I have is of the stock before I installed Viper. Still would like to find a way to fix this without formatting and reinstalling everything a third time.

Format system, wipe cache and dalvik, flash the ROM again (which will again wipe system) then see if it comes up, if not you're good and if it does then its something they set in data which means a tweak file or something is there which should be able to be deleted. If its the latter that's why a factory reset was needed. Its been forever since I run sense or viper but I think they make a directory on the sdcard, good place to look.
Tapatalked from my HTC DNA - Carbon
I'm getting the same thing only I'm on CarbonROM. I had just let the phone download all my apps from the market and then after a reboot it greets me with the "System UI has stopped". I think it may be the app settings restoring causing a problem on my end but I'm not sure.
I love what little I've seen of the ROM though lol
Like others have said, wipe everything and try the install again. I got this during my first install of the ROM even though I did a clean wipe, but the 2nd time around it's been fine for me. I've only been using it for a few days though.
Do I need to use the "format data" option in TWRP? I went into the advanced wipe section and selected all of the options in there (twice), then installed the ROM. I skipped setting up accounts and all of the typical new setup options and went straight to quick settings, venom tweaks, profiles, tweaks defaults and system UI crashed again.
From my reading, I didn't see anything to be gained by formatting data, so I've wiped and reinstalled again. Just about have everything setup, then this time I will hurry up and get a good TIbackup and nandroid made before I find a way to break it again

A few problems after installing Cyanogenmod 11

Hello.
Today I decided that I should upgrade my phone and move to Cyanogenmod 11.
So I downloaded everything, followed every step, made a backup with Titanium Backup, and upgraded.
With (almost) no problems, my phone booted with Cyanogenmod.
At first, everything went smooth, I put all my stuff back in the memory while I sit back and enjoy the speed.
But then everything went bad. I found out all my contacts are gone, all my photos are gone, all of my songs are gone, the home button doesn't work, I opened Nova Launcher and suddenly the lockscreen has been disabled.
I can't close apps because the home button doesn't work. The button on the upper left on the notification center doesn't work (although it worked at first), I don't even get notifications.
There is no physical problem with the home button. When the phone is locked, I press the home button and it wakes it up, but it does nothing besides that.
I also can't access my Contacts app, I need to open the Phone app and access them through there.
Also– I can't receive any calls. It seems the phone knows a call has been made, but it sends the caller straight to voice mail and I need to check the missing calls to see if anybody called.
If it helps, whenever I boot the phone there's a tiny exclamation mark on the top left.
Please help.
Well don't know what the problem is but seems like you are running out of RAM... I personally didn't had any problem with any aosp ROM be it cm11 or omni...
Try flashing it again and flash it clean that is do a factory reset then wipe system, preload, cache, dalvik cache..and then install it...
Also avoid using art as your runtime as it may be the culprit...

I doubt it's about the RAM, I never had any problems with it, and I clean it regularly.
I will try to flash it again, but I try to back my things up, and instead of backing up only the user apps (107) Titanium Backup backs up about 321 files, which I think means it backs up also the System stuff.
What do you mean by "avoid using art as your runtime"?
EDIT: I flashed the ROM again, and everything works fine. But before I bring all of my stuff back through Titanium Backup, I need to be sure: What does grey apps with cross line on them means? Because I don't want to screw up my phone again...

The apps which are crossed are not installed in your device...avoid the ones which are colored as these are the apps from your previous system which must have been backed up by titanium backup...dont restore them..just go in the tab which says restore missing apps with data..the first one in the restore section..it contains all your user apps with their data backed up..
although cm thread says that they dont support the use of titanium or restoring your data...
so i also restore those apps for which data is always necessary like games...it us a little cumbersome but ya thats the way to go for better experience...

Suggestions?

Yes it was. The charging time changed only after flashing to CM.
The usb cable is not the problem, I tried 2 USB and one charger, the charging remains the same.
