I am trying to edit an .xml file in settings.apk, i can't remember the name as im away from my computer, but i tried decompiling manually and recompiling and i jsut get force closes when i copy back to system\app. I also tried apk manager and get the same force closes. I did sign them .apk and also include the twframework.apk as a dependency when compiling/decompiling. Any tips as why i could possibly be getting all force closes? I removed touchwiz from system/app could this effect it?
I don't have experience with your specific case, but when it comes to removing touchwiz from system/app I have noticed problems. For one, when I select Airplane mode, phone lags and I get a force close error. Another, I experience longer (not considerably longer, but still longer) boot times. Tried various things such as factory resets, flashing touchwiz-less systems, but still got these error.s Both issues remedied by putting touchwiz back in system/app.
So yea, not directly answering your specific case, just saying it's possible since removing touchwiz seems to cause problems for myself.
So.
Being a new android user, I messed around with my phone without a full understanding of what would happen if i uninstalled a core application. I assumed incorrectly that Titanium Backup would allow me to reinstall applications, and then uninstalled the stock clock application thinking that it was one of the many clock widgets.
Could someone upload their stock Clock application apk here, or advise me as to how I can restore the stock clock (preferably without having to flash the original ROM)?

Here. I backup all of the apk that I want to remove. Hope this is what you want.
Is this the stock clock application, like the one used for alarms and such?
EDIT: I attempted to install ClockPackage.apk anyway by using Root explorer, and then moving the apk to /system/app and installing it from there, but it says 'Application not installed.' Am I doing something wrong?

This is for clock, alarm, stopwatch etc. Put the apk on the root of your sd card and install from there. Don have to move it to system/app.

LOL YOU DID THE SAME THING AS ME. (except no one bothered to reply to my cries for help and I had to figure out everything myself)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1070083
1)keep your clockpackage.apk in system/apps
2)download this .odex file
3)put the file in system/apps, remember to mount r/w in rootexplorer to enable pasting it in there, then mount r/o when finished
4)turn phone off.
5)turn phone on.
Mmmm, same here but I lost the weather widget due to samsung app update. Any one!

Did you add the odex file as explained above?
Yes i followed the guide as described. I have the odex and apk in system/apps folder. Funny, another clock widget im using is showing my next alarm.. but no alarmclock..
Followed the guide above, apk and odex showing in app system/app but still not available anywhere on the phone.
Anyone recommend a third party clockpackage from the market?
Used sgstools to kill my clock so used it to reinstall it to.
added a extra script,
echo "this will reverse the klok hack"
busybox cp -f /sdcard/sgstools/ClockPackage.apk /system/app/
(you might have to remove it fist if you have been messing around to get it working again)
I did the what the above guide said and could not find the app in the application menu. Help!
will reloading the stock firmware fix this issue?

I did the same thing, but when i restart my phone, the clock in not in the app drawer, when i go to TB, it is there, but with a line through it and it won't restore, all attempts to install the apk is failing too... what can i do?
The link for the odex file is down. Also, I'm trying to get this app working on CM7. Is that doable? I love CM, but a couple of the samsung apps are miles beyond what comes with Cyanogenmod - namely the clock, and the camera. I understand I can't swap the camera app, having looked into it, and I'm ok with that. The clock, however... I gotta have my samsung clock back!
Parse Error
I managed to get the ClockPackage.apk and the ClockPackage.odex from another device (running on 2.3.5 instead of 2.3.6) and now I get the following error while trying to install the apk:
"Parse Error: There is a problem parsing the package"
Does anybody know what to do?
Contacts app backup please help
hi, I recently updated my sgs2 i9100p (NFS) to ics via kies. Its orange but I unlocked now 4.0.3 with baseband ver i9100PBVLP6. an orange bloatware called 'contact backup' irritated me so I decided to uninstall it with Titanium backup. but in a hurry I uninstalled stock contact app. now there is no contact and in every 5-10 second phone freezes and error msg comes-' unfortunately, the process android.process.acore has stopped'. Please help.
AnalogClock.apk + ClockPackage.apk seem to work together.
I used SystemApp Remover to disable ClockPackage.apk, (thought it was a bunch of unnecessary Clock widgets), but stock Clocks package stopped working. I tried enabling it, copying ClockPackage.apk, and still could not. SuperSU logs indicated that all operations succeded normally, but it simply would not work.
I thought, maybe it messed up with program data, permissions, etc., so I removed/deleted both, restarted, then simply copied .apk file for both back. Only then it worked.

There are applications that access data, and there are applications that provide that data. For example, for contacts, you could have many applications that use it (Email, Messenger, Call Logs, etc), and one application that provides it. In case if you accidentally delete data provider (in your case contacts), and if that data provider is essential to running your phone, you will ruin your phone. You might be able to restore it, but I would recommend using Odin to flash correct official firmware. Search in forum "i9100 Android Development".

U are right. I think I uninstalled contact provider, the main contact app. I tried to find solution for all day but coudn't. Tried to flash original stock rom which I have downloaded (i9001PBVLP6) but odin didn't detect my phone in downloading mode. I had to make my phone work anyhow so I flashed Wanamlite 11 with cwm which is ok but not fully functioned on my nfc version sgs2 (now I know the importance of back-up). Now I want my original stock rom back. tried with cwm but didnt work, Odin doesnt detect my phone. any help regarding flashing this stock rom, please?
Hi guys...
I have a problem here. I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 through superuser one click and installed an app called ninja-morph from the market. This app can extract the files of an apk and we can replace objects such as image icons, in the folders in order to make them look as we want to. What happened now was that I changed the icons of two of my system apps successfully - Browser & Gallery. Then I thought of changing the icon of settings app, I tried 2 do so but what happened was that it didn't change and it started force closing. Then I went on to the web and searched for many solutions and so I downloaded an apk, shifted it to my phone an tried to install it but it didn't install. After many tries and changes through ninja-morph too I couldn't do anything. Now the problem is that I can't use wifi 'cause it needs settings. I can't even download any alternative 2 use wifi 'cause it needs wifi. I can't to anything related to internet or settings now. And worse, I just Factory Data Reseted to try if anything can be solved, but no... I just deleted all my apps. One way is to reload the software. But is it safe to do it with a root? Because I can't un-root it. Please Help Me Out.

Which rom are you using?
Seems your settinga apk got corrupted. Your options are:
-extract the original settings apk from the rom you're using and place it in system/app (with a root Explorer), with rw-r-r permissions.
-reflash a complete rom (custom through cwm or stock trough Odin)
Also, make a habit of backing up your original stuff before modding.

i used the stock 2.2.1, but now i have flashed and solved the problem.
I accidentally deleted phone.apk and phone.odex located in /system/app following circumstances that I won't explore here, and because of this, I no longer have mobile data connectivity. Now, I did offload phone.apk onto an external SD card before this happened, but phone.odex was lost, and now I need it back. Attempts at installing Phone.apk always end up failing with a message simply stating that Application was not installed, and trying to use adb to install it returned error [INSTALL_FAILED_DEXOPT]. I used the search engine to look for similar questions, but they all involve some sort of a custom ROM. The tablet is rooted and running stock ICS 4.0.3 (no custom ROMS for this device yet, as far as I'm aware). Is there any way to acquire the missing .odex file other than requesting someone with the same device to upload it here?

No, man. The only way to get proper .ODEX, is get it from from original firmware. I recommend you to request both phone.apk and phone.ODEX, to 100% avoiding version mismatch.

hi guys, not sure exactly which forum this goes in. I was my hands on an AT&T Galaxy S4 and copy out the SamsungOCR2.apk and SamsungOCR2.odex files. I tried renaming the odex file to classes.dex and adding it to the apk file, but it won't install on my Verizon S4. I've searched around trying to figure out how to correctly build out an installable apk file from these two and haven't had any success. If I post the files, can someone else try and create an installable apk?
All I ever get is "application not installed" at the end. I'm running SynergyROM and I have allow apps from unknown sources checked and verify apps is unchecked.
Thanks in advance for your help.
(P.S. Yes, I know I can just use google glasses, or camcard, but I'd like to get this working and I'm sure others would like to try it out too).
Moved to Q&A and Help section
Do they work on an odex ROM (stock or modded without Samsung bloatware removed)? You'd most likely need to place them in /system/app and reboot. Most apps in system don't need to be "installed" perse, just placed there.
Edit: I see that even if I place it in /system/app, it does not show up with an icon, but I'm running CleanROM 1.5 R2, which gets rid of a lot of Samsung apps... so there might be another file that I need to make the icon for the app appear.

Thanks for the attempt. So would you recommend flashing back to stock/rooted and see if it works that way?

Stock, but you'll need root to put in /system/app. If you just want to make a nandroid backup, one of the ROMs mentions it has it supposedly:

Search for optical in that thread's first page
