[Q] Unreliable Data Connection/Modem Question - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I started flashing custom roms to my current phone 2 years ago, but now it started to bother me about my data connection. When I was in stock, I had a very reliable data connection (4G I believe). However now, it does not even connect to 4G. Is flashing a custom ROM (originally GB, now JB) affecting my data connection? This bothers me a lot as whenever I'm not in wifi range the internet becomes very unreliable, especially when using it with GPS.
Another potential related topic is modems. Is that really related to my problem? How do I know if I have an updated version?

Settings, about device, baseband version is your modem. Different roms will flash different modems. If you used to get good connection, then you flashed a rom, and now you don't the modem could be the problem. Try a different modem. Flash it and use it a day or two before you flash a different modem as it may take a day or two to settle in. If after a day or two you are still unhappy flash a different one and try it out. For me in my area I prefer UCLE5, but you may operate better under a different modem.

Two answers.
1. Yes, different firmware loaded with different modem will affect your mobile connection. If you know your original modem, then reflash it again.
2. How do you know that it was 4G? Based on tested data rate or just purely depended on the little 4G icon showed on the status bar?
Just fyi, SS stock ROM always indicates 4G even though it's not 4G rate while the custom ROMs such AOKP does indeed displays the correct mobile speed.

[Q] Galaxy s ii weak wifi

hello, as the topic suggest my galaxy s 2 's WiFi is PRETTY weak.. i hv goggled and found many suffer from this problem, but i couldn't find any solution. i was hoping someone over here could guide me to some script or update to fix this..
i noticed this problem when i step out of my room bars go down to 2.. and if i go little further with galaxy s 2 then no signal, my iphone 3gs and laptop catches signal fine at distance..i have tired routers at different location's, for example my friends house, in university, so problem definitely is in galaxys2.. it may it requires some other kernel or modded stock kernal.. i dont know..
btw i was on stock ROM same problem existed there, now i am Cyanogen Mod 7.1(2.3.7) and its here too..
please let me know what more could i add that might help you guys here figure out a solution.
thanks
Well, the wifi is not the strongest ever seen but i can use it outside my house (for about 10-15 meters away) without problems
Inside the house i have full/almost full signal in every room (on every rom tbh)
So yes, it's not strong but at my eyes, looks like yours is even weak than normal
mine also has a weaker signal than my other devices. However, I ran speedtest on all of them and the galaxy s2 has the same download and upload speed as the others. This is in spite of having zero or one out of three bars. I read in another forum that the wifi signal indicator of the galaxy s2 just shows a more accurate signal strength and the others just increase the indicators to make you believe that it has a strong signal. :-D
Maybe your router wifi transmitter is weak. Also you could try a different wifi channel on your router.
Same issues here
I just got GSII from sprint and i still have my other 2 EVOs and i loose wifi signal when i go downstairs or other rooms while my EVOs get nearly full bars and speed.I never remember having any wifi issues with my EVOs.I also have the same no or weak wifi issues at work while no other phones at work have such wifi signal problem.any suggestions...?
One thing I tried which helped a little was download 'WiFi Alanlytics' from the market and select your SSID and it will advice which is the 'Best' channel strength for your router.
Ant
poor signal
Hi i have same problem with poor signal.Any solution for this !? Try connect with 5 different router same stuff....flash with many different roms and no results any ideas ?

I agree completely, but another thing you should keep in mind is which modem is the best for you, i went though and tested 20 modems and ended up with LP6 which give me good range, speed, and battery, i suggest you test different modem types
Use THIS app to check, is highly accurate
another thing worth mentioning is that i recall once reading that all kernels will not be compatible with all modem types, I use Siyah kernel, GT i9100T, and BULP6 modem
hope that helps

*Modem/Radio/Baseband is all the same thing and can be seen by going to Settings - About Phone - Baseband. It's basically a driver which receives and sends Mobile Network signals as well as handling switching between GPRS, 3G, HSDPA etc....... (but not WiFi connection, that and switchover between Mobile Network and WiFi is handled by the kernel).
Whilst you are absolutely correct in saying modem has nothing to do wifi whatsoever, why revive a two month old thread ?

[Q] Signal strenght issues in CM7

Coming from a HTC Desire, I bought a 6 month old Galaxy S II off a colleague.
I used to run CM7 on the Desire, and was happy with it. So I wanted to install it on the Galaxy as well.
Figuring out Odin and installing CWM was fairly easy, so I was set up with CM7 in no time.
The issue I have is that no matter what modem I use, I can't get a reliable cell signal out of my phone. I've tried some (10ish) different modems from this page.
All of them get 'emergency calls only' sometimes, and dBm values of -95 at best, sometimes going over -106 before dropping connection (emergency calls only).
Signal bars usually stay at 2/4.
If I have connection, I do seem to be able to max out my 3G connection (capped at 1Mbps by the operator) with some modems, but not all.
After restoring stock firmware, I get -77dBm and better, 4/4 signal bars most of the time.
Stock firmware uses XXKE7 modem.
When I tried to use that modem in CM7, I got the same bad results.
I am in Belgium on the Mobile Vikings carrier, which uses the BASE network.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem?

I'm not sure if you have to tinker with the phones APN settings there in Belgium. Sometimes that is the way to troubleshoot poor data connectivity.
Google "apn settings" and the name of your carrier and see what you can come up with.
Other than that I'd just suggest trying different modems. Hope that helps

It is the open source drivers CM based roms use. I see the same on every device I have run CM based roms on. The generic drivers have less radio and wifi signal strength. They don't use the built in hardware to the Max like OEM drivers do.

[Q] Rogers LTE Data connections drops sporadically

I've not seen this posted anywhere in the i717 part of the forms, and felt like it should be OK to post this.
Ever since I got my Galaxy Note from Rogers, I keep getting sporadic data connectivity issues. LTE data will work great, but if I set my phone down (such as when I am at work) and don't touch it for several hours, by the time I return the phone has no data connection.
However the status bar shows that I have full bars connected to LTE, yet when I open a browser or try to use the Play Store, it keeps saying I have no data connection.
This problem occurs on stock, and with custom roms, currently I am using the latest stable release of CM9 Quincyatt.
Has anyone else run into this problem (with Rogers or any other provider that offers LTE with the sgh-i717)? If so, is there anything I can do to mitigate this issue, currently the only fix I've is to simply reboot the phone. This seems to fix the problem, allowing me to access data until the next lengthy period of inactivity. Then of course after several hours of inactivity, when I go to use it again data will once again be dead (even though the phone reports I have a strong signal).
have you tried this Rogers rux lf4 modem? I've been having great results with the bell modem

Modem woe's

Hi guys,
I'm running I9300XXEMB5 but have been noticing poor data performance, phone constantly goes down to 3g mode even in places I know I have good signal, I assume this is a modem issue? How do i go about finding the right modem? If I install modems I notice no difference in speed, and at my house signal is great so it always stays in H. but its when im out and about I start noticing it, but I don't want to have to keep trying different modems for days on end to see which one is "maybe" better.
Phone is New Zealand based 2degrees model, anyone have experience with this?

There is only one thing you can do: test the modems, you can find flashable files in the General section's modem collection.
Another thing you might consider is that certain providers turn down e.g. H+ to 3G or whatever while you are not using mobile internet, but well that is provider related. (called fast dormancy if I am not wrong)

[Q] Signal issues

I've recently moved to Hampshire, UK and got myself a Vodafone simcard. This problem probably existed already prior moving to UK but wasn't as noticeable as phone networks were a lot better in Finland and Czech Republic where I lived before. I often notice my signal being non existent or very low when other people with Vodafone but different phones have ok to good signal. I often also notice that according to the phone it has a HSDPA connection but no data is being transmitted, but immediately if it jumps to HSDPA+, data is being transmitted flawlessly again. I'm running the latest stable CM 10 on my phone. Additionally there seems to be similar issues with WIFI, other phones show good signal but mine doesn't.
Any ideas what could be the cause? Is the reception in S3 just worse than in my old Nokia E71 or Iphone5? What really puzzles me is the not working data connection with HSDPA, sometimes moving few meters might make it jump to HSDPA+ and data again transmits normally.
First go back to full stock rom, latest uk generic firmware and modem to test.
It's more likely to be due to your rom than hardware.
I've tried few different stock roms but the same problem seems to be present, still shows that I'm connected with HSDPA but no data is being transmitted. Any other ideas?
Check APN settings correct modem and CSC .
Would any of these affect the wifi aswell?

Modem, CSC and APN were all correct. My problems are with both wifi and phone network, could the problem be physical? Doesn't kernel come with the firmware, or should I try with another kernel?
You can flash a kernel or modem separately or as part of a whole firmware.
If you've tried going back to stock then hardware is the most probable cause.
