I found this out a few days ago but thought it deserved a thread. So I went to my go to at&t Guy at my store near me and when he tried to look up full retail pricing, he found out that the Note will only be available to purchase by adding two years to your contract. They will not be offering it to be purchased out right at first. He said they do this sometimes when they have an exclusive on a phone for awhile. So you won't be able to pick this BEAST up right away without adding two more years to your contract.... oh well I'm still getting it.
Well sorry for any confusion. It appears all the AT&T people I talked to over the phone our idiots and that the store employees were feed the same crap when they tried to look it up for me. Man you would think they would be on the ball. I think they're seriously underestimating this phone like they did in Europe. I hope that doesn't lead to shortages in the states, like some areas had (Norway from what my friend told me). So you can pre order off contract at 649.99. HAPPY SHOPPING FUTURE NOTE OWNERS!!!!
You can always get one of the Bell/Telus/Rogers units that will be hitting the market here in less than two weeks. Same unit (i717) as the AT&T version but without the AT&T bloatware (and possibly without any external carrier branding on at least the Bell version).
I expect you'll see them on Craigslist for $600, shipping to the US isn't that expensive, and unlocking shouldn't be an issue. And places like Negri or Expansys will also be selling them.
Are you guys sure to get an i717 instead a n7000?
That hardware is less for same price, also devs are working on international version.

Thanks for the great info... I don't know if there the same though cause there were some other differences with the US and Can version of the infuse. Also I already pay 5 bucks a month for the insurance through at&t.

I was wondering if you could ask your guy a question for me if you get the chance. I live in California and the tax laws here are such that we pay tax on the full retail price of the phone, not the upgrade price -- even if we're purchasing as an upgrade. So . . . if they don't have a retail price yet then are they only going to charge me tax on the upgrade price?

I have an N7000, and I don't think the 717 is "less hardware". Same display (most expensive part) same digitizer, same amount of RAM/ROM, same battery, a very close equivalent processor (really, it is, for anyone not running benchmarks all day long), and a better radio that supports both 42Mbs DC HSPA+ and LTE. Plus local warranty and insurance support.
Depends on your priorities, I would think.
i have n7000 and def keeping it, but to the ATT guys that want the i717 your best bet is not rogers in canada.
it will be either bell or telus, both these companys keep their phones unbranded. no carrier stampings on the phone/battery cover.
also ours comes out a week earlier.

In answer to my own question, I just got off the horn with AT&T and they told me that they would only charge tax on the upgrade price if it releases with no retail price.
Also . . . is it just me or does every single thread on these forums mentioning the AT&T version of this device eventually boil down to a snapdraggon flamewar rendering the point of the thread moot?
Looking forward to getting a dedicated forum to the AT&T device.

I went through the flame wars when I got my skyrocket. It is a great phone with an S3 processor. I have the international gnote now, but may consider selling my skyrocket for the att version of the gnote (off contract) so I can keep lte which is prevalent in my state.
But yes the threads will devolve unfortunately, even after the forums split. It is much like how every att lte phone forum devolves into a rant about throttling for the lte unlimited plan members and how att is beyond the evil empire...

AT&T sales rep here. Thought I would clear some things up.
This phone WILL be available for purchase without a contract. Just not at first because it is currently not on our shelves. With the preorder, it will only be available as an upgrade w/ a 2 year contract for 299.
On launch day when you are able to buy it in-store, you will have the option to pay the full non-commitment price for the phone.
As for this phone vs the international. They're both incredible devices. Nothing changes that. As we have seen with the Skyrocket, this same hardware has incredible potential. Tons of overclocking headroom while staying stable.
I'm very excited to see it show up in our store.

Maroon . . . thanks for the info!
Don't suppose you have any info on the availability through Amazon Wireless? If and we'll they'll pick it up and whether or not they'll be doing preorders?
If I go through Amazon there's no tax and no shipping . . . so that's a plus. BUT . . . I've been waiting for this phone like a crazy person since before the N7000 release so I almost want to bite on the AT&T preorder so I can get it on the 17th . . . with tax and shipping that's going to be over $50 to pay just for impatience, though

You can certainly buy third party insurance for the international GNote. I bought it for 59 for a year and it includes theft and loss.

Where'd you get the ins? I found a few different places but couldn't find any reviews on whether or not they were any good.
Im sure we'll have it available for outright buying at best buy too. Im sure ATTs insurance will have a monster deductible for a replacement, probably $200 like for the skyrocket and vivid. I know it sounds like a best buy plug but out protection is pretty bangin haha but I break a lot of phones so I really see the benefit of no deductible

Ensquared. I could not find any reviews either after a buddy told me about it. He has a claim for a damaged phone and they covered it. Since I bought an International GNote, I wanted to have it covered since I paid $650 for it. The deductible is based on the amount of damage and $75 maximum.
I did a quick search and saw this. Post #6

I'm on a flight to the states, just about to take off. Had intended to get TP in USA, but having read this forum, it seems the ones in the UK have less issues. Is this correct? I have a stop over in London and could try to pick one up in duty free...
Is there even a difference? The biggest advantage would be that a UK model would come with a 3 pin plug.

I don't know....seems like I remember reading about a UK guy that had 8 returns....But I think that the best thing would be to get it in the country that you live....that way you're sure there are no "unforseen" problems, like DRM liscensing, etc.
Bob
Hell, I'd get it in the states, dollar < Euro/£
Keep in mind though, the wifi channels for the wireless adapter stop at 11 in the states. Also, I'd tun it on in the store where you get it, make sure everything is OK with it in case you have to return, you can do it on the spot.

7 returns, me. I would recommend buying one in YOUR country, and from the shop with good refund policy. You could in theory buy one in duty free and check it there and then, the but if it's Dixon Travel, and I believe they are the only ones selling this sort of tech, you can only return it to normal store not duty free, at least that's what I've been told by one of their staff. Good luck.

You will pay about 40% more in England. All consumer electronics are a lot higher.
IMO a subjective non validated improvement is not worth the premium. Not to mention if you have issues with the device and need to have fixed or returned.
in England, it comes bundled with the keyboard dock. You cantt buy the tab on itss own.
None available in the airport, just ipads, acer and a Samsung 10.1" but they had no model information... I'll get it in the States.

Whilst this is often true, to be fair to Asus the price they are charging the UK for the Prime+Dock bundle is pretty much the same as the total cost for the two in the US if you factor out the 20% VAT we pay in the UK and convert to USD at 1.5$ to the £.

I took a walk around Chicago last night and didn't find a shop that sells tablets. What shops stock the TP? There is a Best Buy a couple of miles away, should I try there? It's times like this when Google Maps is your friend...
Best Buy or Staples might be your best bet for finding one in a big box store. Also, Best Buy has their satellite stores (Best Buy Mobile) in malls and what not that you may want to try. I was just in one yesterday and they at least had a floor model on display (not sure if they actually had any in stock though)
Was just in best buy. They had a display model but no stock - they only recieved 2. I met a nice gentleman who informed me that they are sold out across Chicago and there are none to be had. He did mention a store called AJ G.... But I can't remember the name of them.
Probably HHGregg is what you are looking for. I checked their stock for Chicago area and it shows none available but here is the link.

That's interesting, I know my local Best Buy only received 2 as well. I actually bought one and then returned it when my Champagne pre-order came in.
Order from US Amazon.com, and have them next day or 2 day it to your hotel.... if they will ship to hotels??? Guess just put the hotel address, and in care of yourself. If something is wrong with it and needs to be returned before you leave, they pay for return shipping.

Tried to order one via Amazon, but they have none, except for non Amazon traders who are looking for a fortune...
Gonna look into ordering it via Amazon UK and getting it delivered to a friend in London (i'll be passing through next weekend) only trouble is the UK ones are all with keyboard, so still very expensive.
Anyone want to suggest other options? Bear in mind I'm living in the middle east, and Amazon won't deliver there...
Also, what's the best colour? I used a purple one today, which was on display, I presume that is the one called grey ?

If you are a non-EU resident, you can claim the VAT back when you leave the country, which will save you about £80 bringing the cost down to the US level.

If a "new" phone is purchased on eBay (i.e. unwanted upgrade) is the manufacturers warranty valid for the purchaser? (2 years in the case of the new S3)
If its bought by reliable companies then yes but you have to register it online as well.

Could you explain what you mean by "bought by reliable companies"? In this case it would be bought by me from a individual seller who got it as an upgrade from his phone company.
If you want a definitive answer around that (and I sure as hell would if I were buying a phone from eBay; which I probably wouldn't in the first place. But, anyhoo...), I'd be contacting Samsung in your country & getting the answer straight from the horses mouth, so to speak.
Personally speaking, I'd feel more reassured by that than hearsay from someone on a phone forum.

Warranty usually requires proof of purchase. In many contracts, hardware upgrades aren't 'sales' in the traditional sense. The IMEI is usually reported to the manufacturer along with the owners information as "proof of purchase".
I would ask to see the warranty documents he received to ensure the hardware warranty is transferable.
It usually comes down to buyer beware, but as another pointed out, doesn't hurt to contact the manufacturer directly.

Hi guys,
I'm looking for a cheap deal for the phone for Christmas. After checking the usual mobile network deals I'm not convinced to pay £38/ month for 2 years.
Instead I saw new phones on ebay for £370 from a trusted seller.
Phones come from "outside UK" warehouse(I'm located in the UK) with 2 pin plug. I wonder if these are dodgy deals, or worth trying it?
The seller itself is providing the warranty for one year and they have very good feedback.
Here is one : LINK
I simply could not find a cheaper one around. DO you think I could go ahead with the buy?

Hmmm, I'm probably in the minority here but I'd beware. Their shipping them in from China and for that price I wouldn't be at all surprised if they're clones. They do have good feedback, but I just don't see how they could possibly sell the real article that cheap without it being dodgy. My guess is if you were able to get it on a network, it would get locked soon after. The other reason I think it's unsafe is that the warranty is with themselves, not an official Sony warranty, which basically means there isn't one.
I'd steer clear.

Thanks for the feedback, that's what I'm looking for.
I'm about 50-50% and I need some more either negative or positive feedback about it to decide.
The problem is that the next phone up on ebay is £419 which is quite high :S

Pretty sure we can wipe our butt with the warranty!

Not entirely sure if it'll come with a carrier. But the wifi version will probably be available just like the Tablet Z was. Both in Sony Stores and in resellers like Amazon, Best Buy, etc...
Best guess is it'll run $499 for a wifi 16Gb just like the Tablet Z did, and $599 for a 32Gb model. Mobile connectivity versions a bit higher, depending on if you buy them straight up or on a contract.
Last I heard indicated either late April or early May for release in the US. Probably May is more likely I bet.
The cellular model looks like Sony made one model with every band in it.
So you could import and will work on Att and T-mobile.

Wow! I'm not here to bash, or promote, any particular retailer. I'm just a guy who wants to buy one of these and am frustrated that Sony isn't selling them here the U.S. (Similar story with the Z1C phone which I ended up buying from the U.K.)
But ... Did you really pay $1500 at Tropical Mobile (price I see on eBay) for a device which retails around the world for $5-600?
If so, my hat's off to you for being bold and decisive. I'm still waiting, hoping for a good option from the U.K. or from Sony USA. The price from the U.K., when available, is forecast at about $590 with support from Sony UK and a two year warranty. There are apparently reputable U.S. eBay sellers offering no-support Europe versions for $510. The latter are promised to already be through customs and ready to ship; what I read at Tropical Mobile is ambiguous about where they actually are and if there might still be customs issues.

I got the WIFI+LTE version from Tropical on Ebay.
I purchased about 10 days ago and the price for the wifi+lte version was $690
I see he just recently raised the price to over $1,000
Mine came from Singapore. Left Singapore and was at JFK and cleared customs the next day. No problems at all
Mine left Singapore too. I paid $560. It wasn't $1000 or so like u said at that time. So no need to rage just simple ask...

Thanks for both answers. That all seems much more reasonable. The big question I struggle with on any of these imports is warranty. Sony typically warrants their products for two years (sometimes with an offer of a 3rd year for an extra penny). I may never need it, but I hate to give it up. Did you get any kind of warranty?

When I was buying from tropical mobile on eBay, the description said 1 year manufacturer warranty. So I guess it doesn't matter where you bought it, Sony has the tab serial, identity, they would automatically cover you with 1 year warranty. Idk. That's my guess...

I wouldn't assume that means anything. They may or may not be an authorized reseller, but if you take the device to Sony's repair facilities in another country, they may not cover it.
Sony USA for example has their own repair network. Their repair centers may not even have access to software or hardware for devices that aren't officially sold in the US market.
I'm not saying that the warranty is void, but unless you confirm it's valid with Sony and will be covered in your home country, I would not assume. I've got a lot of friends in the Philippines and they deal with that stuff all the time with items they have friends ship to them from the states. To the point where sometimes they ship items back to us for us to send in for repair, since the item is only covered under warranty in the US since that's where it was purchased. Similar circumstances may prove out for these.
That said, the prices are surprising. The SGP311 sold for $499 here in the states and I'd assumed the new Z2 Tablet 16GB wifi counterpart would sell for similar. I can buy that SGP511 model for $520-550 on Ebay. Even the LTE model is readily available in 16GB for $629. The cheapest I saw the TMobile complaint LTE Tablet Z was for about $650 in the states, without a subsidy.
I'm half tempted to buy a white 16GB LTE SGP521 just because I'm almost afraid prices will go up when the US model is available.
I may be overly pessimistic and completely wrong, but I both assume and expect that if I self-import an offshore Sony product that Sony USA week disavow any responsibility for it. Best case is that I would have to send it back to the country of export.

I'm considering that option. You get 2 years of broader consumer protection against various maladies for $100-130. But, I still hate to give away that free manufacturer's warranty

I got the White SGP521 model and I love it.
Really sleek looking and performance is awesome.
Using in on T-Mobile and I am getting LTE speeds in the 35mbps range in NYC.
I ordered this last week from eBay seller never-msrp. Black 16 gig WiFi model. It seems like its a euro model as its USB charger is euro prong. Price was fair. I wanted this bad. Think seller has more.

I was millimeters away from ordering the same model from the same seller - and may still. They were responsive to my inquiries and seemed like they would be reliable. They honestly answered my warranty question, which (to my shame) scared me away, or at least caused me pause. I'm not sure from your post... have you received it? Since they offered two-day delivery, I guessed they had the product in the U.S.A. already, which made me more comfortable about it not having to get through customs. How long did it take to arrive? It's supposed to have a U.S. plug; is it a satisfactory charger? Anyway, congratulations.
