[Q] Update problems and some other stuff - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
i bought via ebay a Samsung Galaxy S II. I discovered that is brand by H3G ( italian telephone company ).
I want to ask a few questions:
1) Why i can't update my phone to a new android version? Now there is the 4.0.3 and when i try to update via OTA it tell me that there are not update for my phone but i know it was released the 4.0.4 and the 4.1.2 for galaxy s2 ... also for H3G branded.
If i try to update via kies... kies tell me that i have to update kies and than update the firmware... but, when I try to update the kies , the program shoot down!!!
2) I lost my S II and i bought this one. The previous one , in the dropdown menu had more than 5 toggle... is possible to increase the toggle? Or is a feature of android 4.0.4 or 4.1.2?
3) Can I manually update the firmware ( i want to use the official firmware )? Or i must to root and crack the phone ?
Thanks

As for question number
1- If ur sure an update is available, uninstall Kies, reboot, download the latest version and install it. Then try again.
2- 4.1.2 comes with more than 5 toggles, but to customize them, u need to flash a mod or use a custom ROM.
3- U can manually update using Odin (smaller brother of Kies) by downloading the required firmware from sammobile.com. You don't need to root.
May I also suggest you read this thread.

1) Hmm...That's weird. Three has already released JB for S2 already. However, I have a strong feeling it is not working because you are in a different country( I presume)
2)I am pretty sure the old one had a custom ROM on it. On stock JB, there are 9 toggles.
3) You can and you have to use ODIN for that. I strongly recommend you don't yet, as you are new.
Go online, view threads about i9100 and its custom roms, kernels and recoveries, then start slowly flashing things. Never mistake an i9100 for an i9100G and Read, Read, Read.

So many thx for the reply.
For point 2, i don't want to customize the toggle... but i want the version of android with more than 5 toggles... I don't know what version i had in my "old lost phone"... and i'm trying to search that version to install it in my "new phone"
For other ponint... ok. Thank you.. i'll try! :good:

Like the previous posts said, stock JB has 9 toggles.

Will it change my phone to KE7 or KF2 ?? Pls answer i need help
Sorry can't find the edit button. Kies doesn't even show me the update for the phone. Today i opened kies and it was updating it. I though that then there will be the update for sgs 2 but nothing...
EDIT
found it lol. My phone is branded. Checked with samfit
SGS2 no release of 2.3.4 yet .
You can install another rom like Lighting it will be whatever the rom you install is KE4 7 KF2 whatever the developer has used .

I don't think i understand. I don't want 2.3.4 on my sgs 2. I just want litening rom on my sgs 2. But i have KE1 on my phone. Should i update the firmware to KE7 with odin ? becuase kies doesn't find that update

Have a look at the xda bookmarks link in my sig. In there you can find both official and official branded firmwares. Instructions on how to install are in the 1st post of those threads.
Dear Members'
Sorry for the question but what you mean by non ginger bread firmware on galaxy? The firmwares that i am flashing on it via odin are original stock firmwares downlaoded from samfirmware.... and the latest versions so they are gingerbread. As they are original stock they should be accepted by kies and must let kies to check for new firmwares and install if there is a new one.
Could you please enlight me.
The phone was original and boxed as i bought it , and as i sad it was able to update via kies until i flashed it with new ones from smafirmware.

Kies cannot update a phones firmware for a number of reasons in your case KH3 cannot be updated until ||Kies has a later firmware on its server .
jje
Dear Jjegan;
Thank you very much for the answer , but its seems to be like my explanation was incomplete and not detailed.Kies not mentions that there no update for the current version , it just says sometimes this device can not be updated and sometimes just shows the pda\modem\ version and no more info.
Thanks for help
you would basically need to use a older firmware that completely wipes your phone and return to at least 2.3.3. which kies will recognize and use a official branded firmware.
Kies has not sent out an official upgrade to certain countires that will recognize 2.3.4. It is just starting its roll out, I believe by the end of the year kies will recognize 2.3.4.
Dear CosmicBlue
Thanks for contribution but my previous firmware was 2.3.3 which was also downloaded from samfirmware.com and flashed trough odin , and still was giving an error indicating this device cannot updated via kies , and sometimes was showing the version of the csc modem pda and nothing else , so as you explained normaly in 2.3.3 in must say already latest version ....
I need a version where kies finds the phone and says already latest version and update if finds new release , normally i like to flash via odin but after all flashing all data is wiped and tired to configure eveything again ,and dont want to use backup.
Kind Regards.
you would need to go back to an older version of the firmware say an xkf1 and let kies upgrade it to the latest version which i believe officially is xkg5.
Thank you very much CosmicBlue , could you please guide me from where i shall download the official rom samfirmware.com maybe?
Kind Regards.

Hi,
As far as updates from odin go if you update with a Intratech non-wipe higher version of stock ROM (say XXKH3) from a lower version stock ROM (say XXKF3/G5) the data remains intact. I'm running the non-wipe version but did it when I updated from KF3 to KG5 as i had the same misconception. Somewhere in the forum it is discussed if you revert back to an older version of a ROM then you need to factory reset / wipe the data down.
Cheers
Dear Digifort;
Thanks for the contribution , as you mentioned i was running a full Rom also that wipes all the data , i was not aware that there is a non-wipe version , so now i will download a stock Rom from samfirmware a old one , flash with Odin and connect to kies after will look if it will update to current version.
Kind Regards.

First you stop double posting.
Second, you just turn off the phone, hold the power button till the phone shuts down. After that, you hold the HOME + VOLUME UP + POWER button till the Samsung Logo pops up, then release the POWER button.
When you see the Samsung 3e Recovery screen (TEXT IS BLUE), just select WIPE DATA, RESET PHONE, whatever it is called. Then reboot. You are good to go.

HELP

[Q][Help]Can't update my SGS2 through KIES

I have a Bell Samsung SGS II GT-I9100M that I sim unlocked. (it's not rooted but permanently sim unlocked)
When I first got this phone I tried to install an update through Kies and it didn't work. Anyways I had this phone on the side ever since then and I barely use it (yea sad I know).
Currently the phone is running Android 2.3.3, Baseband I9100MUGKG2, Build number GINGERBREAD.UGKG2 and under KIES it says I have the the latest firmware version which is PDA:KG2 / PHONE:KG2 / CSC:KG2 (BMC)
Anyways I am sure there is a new update but no matter what I do I can't install it.
I tried right-clicking on my device in KIES and the Firmware upgrade option is greyed out
I tried under tools and pressing on Firmware upgrade and initialization and it says
'GT-I9100M' does not support initializing.
What do I do? I would like to update to the latest firmware. I am pretty good with android although I am not familiar with Samsung Devices.
Please help, thank you.
try getting a stock rom for your region through fusdownloader
then reboot into download mode, start odin 1.85 add the downloaded rom to pda (this step actually is explained a lot in this forum so look it up if you are not entirely sure what to do ;P )
then flash the new firmware, should work just fine
cheers

The Bell ICS update isn't rolling out until tomorrow, according to MobileSyrup... here's a copy of the leaked bell memo from their site..
Since you have an unlocked sim device which belongs to other network service provider so kies will not update it as you have some other sim..so the best method is choose the stock rom as per you region from www.sammobile.com and then flash it through odin.

He has the proper bell firmware. The actual software update isn't being released until tomorrow, hence the reason Kies can't find the update.

SGS II-I9100G update question.

Hi, my sis is using SGS II GT-I9100G, she wants to update to stock ICS (singapore) firmware. I found this (GT-I9100_XSP_I9100DXLP9_I9100OLBLP9_I9100DXLP9) firmware and im not sure can her phone update to this firmware cos the file name is stated "GT-I9100_XSP" instead of "GT-I9100G. So can anyone help me out here to confirm whether i can just update via odin or not? Or is there any other stock ICS for "GT-I9100G"? Thanks in advance.
GT-I9100G does not has ICS yet
If not sure whether there is a fimrware update available for your phone check SamMobile or use 'Check Fus'.

You cannot. That firmware file is for the I9100, NOT the I9100G.
I9100 and I9100G are not compatible for firmwares and kernels between the two phones due to the different CPU/GPU/SoC.
If you flash a i9100 firmware on a i9100g phone then you will brick your phone, go for a custom rom.
Nevermind
ok, thanks guys...so i guess i have to put on hold without choice...

Samsung model shw-m250k

Hi, my dad has a korean galaxy s 2(model shw-m250k). He wants to have JellyBean, since he has the old gingerbread one. The thing is, can i flash a i9100 jellybean ROM?. I mean the model are different, and i couldnt find a jellybean for shw-m250k model.
Also, are korean phones unlocked?. His device is from the company "Alleh" from south korea, but he can use a sim from personal here, in argentina.
Why not check out the discussion thread for ur device?

Yes it is possible. I have a M250S with i9100 firmware.
Afaik, you need to reboot into download mode and flash a stock JB firmware using odin, along with the .PIT files. That is you check repartition option. But I strongly suggest you ask in the appropriate thread. Messing up a flash when using repartion and pit file will brick your phone. Make sure to have a backup of your efs folder before starting anything.
