Right, it has been disabled for devices without an on-screen navigation bar. Since PIE controls mimic the functionality of our always available capacitive back/home/recent buttons, it really isn't of any use to us.

Hi guys,
Does anybody knows where is the menu button in ICS... it looks it has 3 button, back, home and multitask...
I hope that the menu won't be in each app becasude that will mean no old app until huge upgrade...
They said the buttons change as you need then I'm sure a menu button will pop up if needed.

Yes but I saw all the videos and sometimes 3 dots appear next to the multitask button but is not clear if that is the menu button or what it does. I think they should have left multitask to the longpress home and give us a menu button always there... It will be a pain in the ass for older apps and for cooking. For now this is a fail as for the absence of smart dialing
my questions is this -> will it be able to remove the on screen buttons and use the hardware ones for older phones?
I had the ask loaded and built am ICS emulator, I'll test on one of my apps this morning and report back.
Powered by Infused v2.2.0
I would hope so...that would take up some much needed screen real estate on a smaller screen.
Just tried in the emulator and I had no buttons, I will have to look into updating my app for ICS.

So my fears are real... no menu button for third party apps... that is so wrong
Right, a have to update the apps to show the buttons.

Nonono, the way it works (based on my understanding and playing with the 4.0 emulator) is this:
On a device with no hardware buttons (Galaxy Nexus):
Menu button shows up if the app has a menu (makes sense)
On a device with hardware buttons (most devices):
Soft keys don't show up, multitasking comes up by long-pressing home button (confirmed in emulator)
That's how it works I believe
The soft-keys don't show up in the emulator because it's emulating a device with hardware keys
---------- Post added at 06:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:40 PM ----------
The one big UI change you could make to your apps to really take advantage of 4.0 is adding an Action Bar to your app (they demonstrated this in the Gmail app I believe).
No action would be needed to support regular menus though
What about the search button? I always use it. sigh.
And I'm guessing on older phones, they can access the multitask menu by holding down home?
Question - I installed the ICS SDK and was trying to tinker with it to make the soft buttons appear, but it's not happening. What settings do you use for an instance of the emulator to force the soft buttons to exist?

How'd you get the emulator to show the soft buttons?
I have not figured out how to get the soft buttons to appear, the emulator still shows the hard buttons from previous versions.

How? if older apps have Menu button functionality, the Menu button will appear. Not really that hard to understand.
they should do away with the menu button. i've personally found the best apps don't utilize it or utilize it very little. the more you have to dig into menus and settings the worse it is for user experience. if i recall, the new native google apps have the equivalent menu function in the top right corner. iOS apps essentially have the settings button in the same spot too. if ICS is all about UI and user experience, we need to see some consistency. for non-native android users, the menu button is not intuitive.
long press
does the soft keys have long press ?? if yes may be long press on multi task button gives u menus
Hey guys,
I guess this question is answered with this video ...

Why should they do away with the menu button? Who cares if it's not intuitive for non-native Android users? Why take the menu button and all of the options that come with it away from the people who are smart enough to use it because some people aren't smart enough to use it? The people who don't know it's there wouldn't know any difference in the first place if it was done away with. The rest of us would.
Has anyone figured anything else out about this now that there are videos everywhere? I still haven't seen any evidence that the menu button exists. Google added the menu button to all of their apps, are all the other apps left out?
I am using a Galaxy Nexus. Most of the time, keys on the navigation bar are not touched by accident. But when playing a game I often touch the soft key accidentally. Because many games require to touch controls on the edge of the screen, which is very close to the navigation bar. iOS, on the other hand, does not have this problem, because apps use the full screen, and there is one hardware button. Also, I often accidentally swipe up from the bottom to launch Google Now, when actually I wanted to scroll up. There is no menu to disable that swipe up action, except disabling the Google Now. I want to use Google Now but not by swiping up. I would prefer just a icon on my home screen to launch Now.
I already saw some custom ROMs have a feature to toggle the navigation bar, but I think there must be some official solution to this. The solutions I can think of;
1. The custom ROM way. Add toggle menu to the power menu.
2. Make the buttons as physical buttons not capacitive buttons.
3. Add another physical key on the side to enable/disable navigation bar.
4. Swipe from left to right on the navigation bar to lock it. Swipe again to unlock it.
5. Long pressing Home toggles the navigation bar. On first long press, the home button is changed to a lock icon. To unlock the bar, long press the lock icon.
6. Or Google Now is launched by long pressing of the multitasking button.
What do you think? Do you have the same troubles?

You can kinds of disable it using SwipeLaunch Disabler.
https:/play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hk.sld.SwipeLaunchDisabler
Honestly probably all nexus owners experience this problem although I personally give it up for awesome stock launcher and features and being able to easily hack it.

Anyone know if it is possible to swap the mapping of the home/back buttons? I use the back button more often than the home button and find the location of the home button easier to reach in general. I realize I can't change the actual hardware icon ... looking for a software fix.

You can try the "Xposed Additions" module that remaps hardware keys but not positive if it will work, never used it on this phone.

There are some options that can help with this in the ViperMAX ROM:
1. In tweaks you can set custom mappings for short press, double press, long press and swipe action for the home hardware key. The same can be done for the back key (except for the swipe action, if I'm not mistaken).
2. You can enable PIE, which basically allows you to slide your finger from the side of the screen to pop-up customizable software buttons on the screen. I use this for the same reason you describe (to make my most common actions easily accessible with my right thumb). In-fact I use PIE to pop-up software buttons to do things like "back", "pull down notifications" and "home"...
If you take advantage of those tweaks, it is easily enough to suite your needs and more.

Yes, it possible software wise. I'll pm how to. File explorer needed with root access.
It can be done with Sence or Aosp, stock or custom ROMs. I edit this ever device I have to suit my needs. I like running full screen, no status bar nor navigation bar. One reason I like my Max. Full 5.9 viewing area.

Could you PM me with your solution? Thanks.
Is there anyway I can have the navigation bar on all the time? Including fullscreen videos? I hate having to click back on the camera (and other apps) for the navbar to appear when I can just press home if the navbar was always on. Is there anyway to do this through Xposed orany other method?
The soft keys?
If you're talking about the soft keys then there are 2 ways for them to pop up on the screen.
1. Tap the screen (this only works on certain apps)
2. Swipe - if you're in landscape mode then swipe the right edge inwards the soft keys will appear.
If you're in Portrait then swipe up from the bottom edge and the soft keys will appear.
But if you're talking about the Navigation bar then you need to swipe Downward no matter if you're in Landscape or Portrait..

I know how to make them appear, I'm asking if there's a way to make them stay there all the time like physical keys. Off topic is there also a way to remove the delay response of holding the power button for the power options to appear?

Sorry I can't give you firm answers because my phone is with LG for repair, but I do recall seeing in settings options for when the buttons appear and disappear. It allowed you to set it on a per-app basis.
As for the delay response for the power button, your best bet would be to see if there is an Xposed plugin. To use Xposed you'll need to root the phone.
When I get my phone back I can give you more specifics, but LG has the worst warranty repair service and has yet to fix the issue after sending it to them four times.
You at JBLM? Thanks for your service!

Thanks for your reply  but I've looked at everything possibly related to power button delay or the navigation bar (soft keys) on Xposed before posting here and still nothing. I did find a screenshot delay remover in Xposed and works great. Finding the power button is not as important as the soft keys because I can just use Rom Toolbox's rebooter and power/reboot/recovery etc... The soft keys thing on the other hand I would like to have because I hate having to pull up for them to make them appear... Iv'e looked at the settings you mention for showing/not showing per app but every app is not listed, its just some of the apps on your phone (apps that I would like to have the soft keys always on are mostly video apps which are not listed on this settings.) I', almost used to it by now, I just rather have the keys always on or a phone with actual physical keys.
Yes I live in JBLM . I'm a dog handler in the Army.
Hi, I bought a new Mi A3 two days ago for my father.
For him display nav buttons are more user friendly than gestures but I can't find how turn on them.
In my Mi A2 I can find them on System > Gestures > Swipe up on home button > OFF (nav buttons) / ON (gestures), but in Mi A3 "Swipe up on home button" doesn't exist.
Please, any suggestions?
Not possible at moment
Is there a way to swap the buttons or put the back button on the right side?

Yeah, follow this guide, but you need to have installed adb on your computer

Are you talking about 3 button nav bar? You can turn it on from Settings>System>Gestures>System Navigation>3-button Navigation (For Android 10)

Sadly not possible on Android 10, Google removed the interface which allowed swap of buttons on stock Android.
Thank you.
