I purchased a second hand XT910 installed AVG and it informed me my phone is rooted.
Now I know nothing about rooting, nor the benefits/drawbacks, however I'm being given the option to install the downloaded JB update but it keeps failing, I've worked out the reason is because it's rooted, how do I go about installing the update, or unrooting the phone so it will do it itself?
Appreciate any help provided.

Download OTA Rootkeeper in Play Store, you can save the root files, update JB OTA, then restore root for working on JB.

There are some files called sbf... Google your version and download it. Then download the official drivers for your phone from Motorola and last thing you need is rsd lite what is also available on moto's website. You can also google for a tutorial there are many on YouTube...

Thanks for trying to help, but I have no idea what I'm doing, I'll just stop the update reminders and stick with ICS, I'm annoyed with the seller for not stating it was rooted.

when the install fails it will state what the error is if its a file it will give the md5 and sha-1 (basically a load of numbers and letters.
if you could put those and the file path someone maybe able to give you the file's you need to get the update to run.
what they mean by sbf files are these http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_spyder/list.php these you can flash to your phone with a program RSD lite which when done will put the phone to stock, meaning to its original state and without root. then you can set the phone up how you like and can update to jelly bean.
it all sounds really hard but its not really i did it myself not knowing a thing before.

Hi, it doesn't give any error code, the droid falls over, it restarts the phone, then just says software update failed.
Here is a screenshot of the system info, don't know if it can help you help me?
It won't let me post the image (outside links) until I have 10 posts, so there goes that idea.

Hello everyone!
Just bought the photon yesterday and have a question about updating the software. I was told by the gentlemen not to update(On 45.2.5 now) because if I did I would not be able to use WIFI. Says that the update would break it. Has anyone ran into this? I've looked around and haven't really seen any mention of it.
Any help would be great!
This is the first time I'm hearing of this. Those store reps are clueless when it comes to phones lol. It won't break your wifi.

1) What system version are you on?
2) What happened during the update?
3) Is your phone completely stock (you have not modded it in any way)?
4) If necessary, you can push the latest update via RSD Lite v5.5
Good luck!

You gotta use that for the latest update via RSD, rooting it won't get you updates. And whoever told you that updating would break your WIFI was a dolt. It actually fixes most of the WIFI issues people were having. I've attached the 5.5 version of RSD so you don't have to hunt it down. Just follow the instructions in the thread I linked above and you should be golden. :]

You need to extract the zip file you downloaded from the link xTMFx provided (contains the 198_7 SBF)...you open this SBF file in RSD Lite, connect your phone to the computer after putting it in RSD mode, and hit START.

Once RSD lite has done it's thing, the phone will reboot, or you will have to manually reboot (it's a soft brick, just pull the battery if necessary).
Best,
K
I generally have had to pull my battery then reboot manually. But works just fine for me.

yes i'm in ap fastboot mode,i downloaded 2 versions of dru one is a 7-zip file which i can't open on my pc even though i downloaded the program to do it ,i don't know what type of file the other version is got it from matts xda post,it opens and runs but again i get the script saying files\moto-fastboot ect...when i first tried to root using doomlord it installed the bionic bootstrapper the root didn't take so i uninstalled the bootstrapper and rooted using motofail i don't have any boot or safe strap installed, please someone help me i want to be ready when ics rolls out,.......
I'd suggest going back to Matt's thread, and going through a few pages as there is an updated version. I think it's also posted at another razr forum. Delete the versions you have just to eliminate any confusion. You may also just want to use RSD. It took me a few tries to get the right fastboot file, but once I did I just had to ota to .173 then to .181.

a few days ago i received the notification on my razr saying i could upgrade to ics, after downloading and selecting install, it failed, i tried a few more times, and it kept failing.
i then decided to do a factory reset and then try again, but, after doing a factory reset, i cannot find the update, if i try searching for it, it says my phone is up to date, and their is no update available for my device, help? thankyou

Very easy. I downloaded from the link in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850683, unzipped and updated using RSD lite. I then re-rooted using one of the idiot proof one-click methods. I just googled to get RSD lite. Info on how to do it all can be found in the dev forum; sorry i can't be ars*d to find all the links again... it'd take me as long as you.
It's easy to do as it is an 'official' update so you can use RSD- no Bootstrapper required.

I'm no expert, but i thought you didn't have an install from zip option unless you installed bootstrap or something similar so you had recovery options. Doing it by RSD means you can be completely stock (no addons) and you just use fastboot, as supplied by Moto. So it's a 'no hack' upgrade, all pukka Moto stuff.
Hi,
I have an XT 910 and its system version is 672.180.41.XT910.Retail.en.EU and it's running ICS 4.0.4
I was given the option to update by motorola but i couldn't, it just keeps failing, I thought it's possibly because I had superSU when I rooted my phone so I clicked full unroot, and super SU disappeared but it still wouldn't update.
I would like to either try to get the update to work, or see if I can root my phone again and flash a custom JB rom like Liquid onto the phone, but sadly have changed to a macbook and not sure how to do these things on a mac!
Any light shed on me will be greatly appreciated...
Thank yoU!

Emmm, it prompts me to download the file, then when it finishes downloading it prompts me to install, when i hit install, the phone reboots, then goes to the Motorola startup logo, then the android thing moving, then the bar under then android goes about 1/4 of the way and the phone boots back into what it was, when it finishes starting up it'll just say "software update failed!" something similar, no coding what so ever....so I'm at a bit of a loss!

Ermmmm, I ought to understand this but I'm not sure what it means. Where do I obtain RSD lite, and if I reflash it does that just restore the system to the factory original, or would I be better off trying to flash it to JB instead?
I'm personally not too fussed if I can just get the official update to work...

Google is your friend. The reflash does restore the system files, you need to update to jelly bean from ICS, because the fastboot files for jelly bean are not released yet.

I know, i have been Mac and Linux user. But you need Windows to do that. Most of the things or programs are for Windows.
Right so I've got as far as getting windows, and RSD lite... i've got rsdlite v6.0
But I'm not sure which rom to flash, there seem to be loads of roms on the market but i just can't tell which one's the official update one.
I've found this thread that seems to suggest something similar but it doesn't seem to be a rsd lite thing...
would anyone be able to point me in the direction of the correct fastboot files I need? pleasee?
Thank you
Adrian
The user lordazoroth originally posted this method here in the T-Mobile SGSIII forum. However, I have confirmed that it works with the Note 3 (at least with the Verizon variant) with one small difference. Feel free to give us both a "THANKS" if this helped you out.
You can disable the OTA Update notification by following the steps below. Just be aware that there is a small change in STEP #3.
Solution:
Step 1. Delete the update located in /cache/fota/ (may be /data/fota) and then click the update notification prompt to install it, it will instantly fail and the notification will disappear. (My phone rebooted and tried to install the update - this is the point where my Note 3 gave the update failed notification. I just rebooted the phone and went to STEP #2.)
Step 2. Disable otacerts.zip located in /etc/security by renaming it to otacerts.zip.bak
Step 3. Disable FotaClient.apk and FWUpgrade.apk by renaming with .bak extensions located in /system/app/
Step 4. Reboot
(NOTE: The difference in STEP #3 for the Galaxy Note 3 is that the [FotaClient.apk] is named [LocalFotaClient.apk] instead of just [FotaClient.apk]. All of the other steps are the same.
Continue running JB 4.3 and enjoy your Note 3 without that nagging update notification!
But the kitkat update is awesome... so you might want to reconsider doing this

I got the annoying OTA update today... I DON'T WANT TO UPDATE!!! Why can't they give us an option instead of forcing it down our throats?
Is there any way to disable the update WITHOUT ROOTING? I read everywhere you need ROOT ACCESS to delete the SDM.apk FILE and such. I can't delete it without root.
How can I get rid of the annoying update WITHOUT ROOTING or what is the easiest way to gain root without wiping out everything and starting over?
As of this morning...Verizon seems to be trying to "ram the update" onto your note 3
I was rooted and safestrapped on MJE and when I unplugged my phone from the charger this morning...I had a notice that the update failed to install.
I had previously downloaded, but removed the download.

No way of knowing how far it got. If it was able to get the bootloader nailed in...yes. Screwed. Welcome to kk. If not, whatever you do will wipe at this point.
Safest bet to try and see if you can retain jb is with odin...if it lets you. If it does, great. If it doesn't, you still need odin because you just interrupted a firmware update and probably just soft bricked your phone. So you'll need odin to put kk on your phone.
--
If niether of these things look good, they aren't. So try this first. Try booting to recovery. If you can, it's possible you just saved yourself from learning to use odin. Do a factory reset and reboot. See if it boots to jb. If it does, root asap. If not (it just hangs forever or loops), you're bricked. Try to odin jb. If it keeps failing, you're stuck with kk and you need to odin kk.
If you can't get to recovery and just hangs or loops, odin jb or kk. Whichever it lets you.
If it doesn't let you boot to recovery because it continues to upgrade, at this point let it. This is the ONLY possible scenario that you will keep anything.
Mind you, everything I just covered will never touch any files on external sd memory.
This is a lot to process. So take your time. Good luck!

GRRR it installed Kitkat successfully. I'm SO MAD.. I should have set the annoying OTA notification for a different time so that it wouldn't constantly pop up every second... I would have been home free rooted on Jellybean if it weren't for the STUPID UPDATE.
So can I still DOWNGRADE to Jellybean and be rooted? or did Verizon LOCK or restrict stuff with the update? Can I go back to Jellybean keeping all my files?

I read that too... I can't believe one simple tap mistake ruined my whole first time rooting adventure... Using KINGO was so easy and right when I WAS ABOUT TO DELETE THE STUPID SDM file in the system folder, the update popup came up and accidentally hit the UPDATE And it just rebooted instantly!! I hate how they don't even allow you to cancel or anything... like totally forcing it in your face!!
I still have SuperSU but no longer functions it says "There isn o SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem! If you just upgraded to Android 4.3, you need to manually re-root - consult the relevant forums for your device!"
So there's no way to have root access now?? I can't flash back to Jellybean??? Verizon/Samsung really screwed us here. There must be a way to have root access in Jellybean... I don't care for custom roms... I just want root access!!

AH EVIL VERIZON... freaking Verizon...
There seriously is no way to flash back to Jellybean and be rooted??? or be rooted in Kitkat?? This is SO RIDICULOUS..
I'm at least glad FoxFi fixed a way to still work with KitKat... if they didn't, I'd be really pissed to have no hotspot and stuck with KitKat... screw you VERIZON.

As it has been warned now many, many, many times.... There is NO GOING BACK if you take the NC4 update. Also, as of now, there also NO root method for it. You're stuck on it.

So it would be pointless for me to try to use Odin to flash back to stock Jellybean and then KINGO? It won't even flash back?
I did successfully root before OTA installed Kitkat on mine... does that make any difference?

Unfortunately no. Once you have nc4 loaded you cannot go backwards.
