Whenever I connect my phone to my car stereo via AUX, I'll have to unplug/re-plug the cable multiple times for it to register. Basically, it'll continue to play through the phone speaker(s) instead of coming through the stereo. I've tried multiple music players & even tested the cable itself on my old Rezound & iPod and it's working fine with them(it's not the cable).
Is there some setting to fix this?
May sound stupid, but do you have a case that may be keeping the plug from going all the way in.

and no, it's a soft case with enough room around the jack. the cable plugs in securely.
When mine is connected with no case I get a constant fuzzy static noise unless I hold the side where the red grill is then it goes away
What Rom are you running? Is it stock unrooted or a custom Rom, if rooted what kernel are you running?

I should have mentioned... just got the phone a few days ago. It's still stock everything(haven't bothered unlocking/rooting/etc yet)
I had this same issue two months back. I did two things, i don't remember which did it.
Take a cotton swab and put a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol on it. Stick it in the aux port. Don't overuse the alcohol. Next, blow into the aux port. I had a small hair inside the port, causing the headphone jack/aux to not register.
I tried flashing several roms before i found out the simple issue lol. Let me know if this helps, my friend.

I think this is it. My phone did it yesterday and today. Both times I unplugged it, blew in the aux hole and on the stereo cable, and then it worked. Probably small piece of hair or dust in there.
This shouldn't be a problem with a new phone, but on previous phones/mp3 players I owned (ones that actually fit into a pocket) I ended up having to clean the inside of the aux plug with a paper clip (or any small thin object that wont break in there) from all the pocket lint that gathered in it.
well i tried cleaning the slot but it didn't help.
i have noticed that if i leave the screen on, plug in the cable & wait a few seconds, it registers.
any other way and it doesn't really work well/at all.

My headphone jack has been fine since I bought the phone on release day, well yesterday after a walk, I pulled the headphone plug from the jack and noticed my music was still playing but through the phone speaker... weird.
well in my friends car I wanted to use her aux input and it didn't register (aka show the headset icon in status bar), nor did it play through the car, only the phone speakers...
same thing when I tried in my car. Also tried again with the iBeats I used when it first happened... nothing.
I tried the cotton swab thing (most cotton swabs are too think though xD) and used compressed air to blow any hairs or specs out of it...
I can get headphones to register now, but I have to plug it in veerryy sloowwllyy ... :/
thing that sucks is I don't have a warranty... I mean maybe the stock HTC one but no verizon or 3rd party warranty

I've got an aux input in my car, and today when I tried plugging in my GSIII, I got met with a faint but annoying whistling sound underneath my music.
It stops if there's no sound being sent over the wire, but the moment a notification (or music) starts playing, it comes up.
Car worked fine with my DX, and still works fine with my friends' iPhones, but I get the stupid sound with my brand new galaxy siii. Oddly enough, it works fine with headphones.
any ideas guys? I'm kinda stumped.

Do you have the phone charging through the cigarette lighter? You can get ground noise from there, and it will be transmitted through the phone to your stereo.
Hm. Let me try again without it charging, but that's strange. Why did my old DX not experience this?
Assuming that's the issue - will a different cable solve the problem?
edit: So I checked the phone without plugging it into the charger. Still get a whistling noise. It's really more like a high pitched hum. I notice that if I don't plug the plug in all the way it doesn't happen (but I think I only get one channel).
I'm getting the same thing, and it's driving me crazy. At first I thought my brakes were going bad in my car!
I've tried different audio players and apps, but it still always get the noise. The phone is not charging, and I did not get this with my old captivate either.
Any ideas?
Doesnt happen in my Porsche. I'm using Bluetooth audio though.

I am having the same issue. First time experiencing it though; never heard it with the iPhone, HOX, or NS
I'm using a line in cable, and when i jiggle it, i can hear the noise change tone at the same time. I have a feeling it might be because it's a regular stereo cable and the microphone combo jack on the phone is not working right with it. But that's just a guess.
It's pretty annoying and its making the phone unusable as a music player.
Happens in my Lamborghini (Dodge Caravan) when using a MP3 player. Usually, if I run my hand down the cable it clears as though it's some kind of static build up in the cable.

try flipping the cable (putting the aux in side into the phone and the phone side in the aux in) it happens to me sometimes and if I flip the cable it clears it out I couldn't tell you why though. also make sure there isn't any dust in the ports or on the cable ends.
That noise you hear is most likely due to the electrical system in the car. I rent cars all the time for work and never know the shape the electrical sys is in so to resolve the issue I bought a Kensington Cable from amazon and now have CD quality sound from any music app including pandora & spotify.

Unfortunately, my cable is RCA on one side (L+R channels split) and regular 3.5mm on other.

Not sure what you mean by "the electrical system" and the "shape" of it. Could you clarify? As I said, I have no problems with other devices in this car.
I would usually suspect something wrong with the car, or maybe a ground loop, but I can plug in my Galaxy S (Captivate) or iPod with the same cable, same everything, just switching out the phone, and the noise goes away.
The way the noise cuts in and out between songs, and when I close the music app, it seems to only happen when the audio chip is getting a signal or is being energized. This is making me think that it may just be a noisy chip :crying:
I was on conf call with SGS3 plugged to AUX, no power charging was going on. And either noise canceling didn't work, or noise was getting in thru AUX line to receiving end. I didn't have problems listening, but ppl on the other end complained, and I had to mute the mic.

I am having the same problem. My HTC Thunderbolt never had this problem. Same car and cables, I get the hissing and popping until I play something. Then it goes away until I stop the music and then it comes back again. Weird and disappointing.
The problem comes from the 4-pin (TRRS) audio jack in the GSIII combined with presumably bad grounding in my 2007 Honda Accord, or the Aux adapter.
I fixed it with a simple DIY solution. I cannibalized a TRRS headphone jack and bought a TRS (3-pin) port from radioshack. I clipped off the jack with a generous portion of wire, then stripped them and cleaned them from their insulation (they are covered in insulating dye).
I connected 3 of the wires to the TRS connector, and taped the whole thing up. No more hum.
Also known as Road Noise. Where the power cable and audio input are too close to each other. Electrical current emits a small magnetic field which will hinder audio quality and promote road noise from the alternator.
This is a very typical senario in car audio install, when you run the power cable and rca right next to each other.
this buzzing noise happens to me every time i drive my car for the past 3 years:
solution: turn down the car volume. if you keep your car volume half-way, then you wont hear it as much, or you wont hear it at all.... you can make the phone volume as loud as you want though. also, as you accelerate faster, the noise gets louder. watch, try it.
I got new headphones about a week ago (shure se535) and had been using them with my note for at least twenty hours already. Yesterday while walking to work I was using them with my note and they were working just fine, and same with right after. Then when I was getting ready for bed I wanted to listen to some music so I popped them in and picked a song and only the left side worked! so I threw them in my laptop and they both worked. Tried them in the note.. only the left works.
When I push on the headphone jack slightly to one side, the signal returns to the other ear.. I checked for lint in the hole but it still looked brand new. It seems as if the little connector inside the jack for the right side has somehow become almost flush with the rest of the jack, if not pushed in somehow. The weird thing is, when I tried it with the stock headphones with mic, both sides worked! wtf!. It doesn't make any sense lol.
What should I do? Send phone in for warranty repair? Has anyone else had similar problems?

I had the same issue with my old Shure headphones the other day. The Samsung headset works fine with the Note. The Shures work fine with my laptop. It's intermittent though with the Note.
This is discouraging to hear. 3.5mm jacks have been in use for so freaking long that you'd think there wouldn't be any problems...
I'm worried that if I do go to Telus and get a repair done that they will say there is no problem and not even touch it. I wonder why my $500 shures out of the blue lost connection, yet the cheapo OEM headphones work lol. I'm very careful to not let anything put pressure on the jack when plugged in..

The other day while listening to music on my note the sound from the right ear phone went dead. If I played the with cord or bent the jack and held it that way I could hear music again from both ears. So naturally I thought I just needed new ear phones. However my ear phones work fine for every other device and even a different pair of ear phones in my phone gave me the same problem. If I listen to music without ear phones the speakers work fine. Is my phone damaged or is there a way to fix this?
Your headphone jack might be malfunctioning. Try a different pair of headphones on the device.

I would say malfunctioning headphone jack since you had the same issue with more than one pair. do you have a case on it? The case could be blocking it from fully entering and making a good connection

Also if you keep your phone in your pocket, it could be lint in the port. That happened to me on my streak

A good tip for cleaning electronic connections is a qtip and rubbing alcohol. So long as your device is without power. I would even remove the battery. Try cleaning out the phono plug with some rubbing alcohol first.

And a can of air can help blow out the lint and dry the alcohol.
I took it out of its case and still the same problem. I did blow in it and there isn't a problem if the jack is in the right position. If I still have sound problems I just turn the jack until I hear sounds from both ear phones again and it seems to stay that way. I don't have any pressurized air or rubbing alcohol and if I can even get them here I will have to go into the city so lets save that for last. Considering that my ear phones are working fine if the jack is in the right spot, does that mean there could just be more dust deeper in there or some sort of problem with the phone?
If there's a sweet spot where it works fine, then there's corrosion in there. Possibly the alcohol and q-tip will remove gunk, but you need some mild abrasion like a pipe cleaner.
Could be dirt or it could mean loose solder joints.
Ok so the problem got a little worse, Even if I twist the jack a certain way just moving the wires to much or the phone it will cause the sound to go out. So if I am walking or even have the phone in my sweatshirt pocket the sound will go out. The only way to get sound to play clear from both ears while walking is the kind of bend the top of the ear phone jack and hold it. If I have the phone on my desk and twist the jack to a spot that works and just leave the phone there I do not have any problems. I will see if my host family or anyone in the village has alcohol or pressurized air but if that does not fix the problem then is something like this worth getting fixed or should I just buy a new phone?
Yeah, that means the soldering has been worked loose. The part is $20 or less on ebay, and there is a disassembly video in the general section. Its not a complicated process to replace the headphone port.
I think you may be right. Today I noticed that if I press down really hard on the jack music plays fine in both ears and twisting and turning the jack doesn't affect it at all. Does that pretty much prove it then?
Yes, its getting worked loose. I've seen someone duct tape the headphone plug to the phone in the sweet spot. It lasted for about a week until the last connection broke.
Ok, I am not in the US so now ebay is out of the question. I will go into the city and see if I can find the part but as someone who never never taken a phone apart and fixed one would watching the video be good enough for me?
You can learn from the video. But if you have a store that sells the part, why not have them do the repair? I can't imagine it would cost more than $50 US.
To who ever can help...I'm experiencing an ongoing problem with headphones on my m8. Trying to listen to music is either one sided (left bud) or none at all. If I plug into my stereo, the Jack works and music is played normal. Coming from headphones to stereo, it goes one sided (even playing through the stereo).
I've changed ROMs with full wipe & clean install, the problem still occurs. Various headphones all do the same. I'm almost positive it's a software glitch somewhere but can't find a setting for it. I've tried freezing music apps with TB, I've also installed HK to see if that would tweak something. No clue what else to do.
To clarify, are you saying that using a line cable to connect the phone to your stereo receiver/amp plays both sides. But all headphones, it only plays on one side?
Correct...I CAN play music via aux cord but CAN"T play through headphones of any kind (I've tried three different ones).

Different headphones use different rubber moldings around the wires, especially near the plug. Some can be thicker and some have little plastic protrusions which prevent the cable from being fully plugged in. If the cable isn't fully inserted, you will sometimes receive no audio in the right ear or no audio at all. I have this problem with a pair of Sony earbuds on my S4 and my M8, and as a result, they're dedicated strictly to my laptop.
Try this...get a male to female aux cord and plug one end to the phone, then plug your headphones into that.
Also, you can try pulling back the plastic sheath around the plug and see if that helps.

I'll definitely try this out and see what happens. Its just weird because when I first got the phone the headphones worked (any and all). It wasn't untill I rooted that I started noticing an issue.
Or just cut a bit of the rubber off the edge of the headphones. With the case on my phone I had to do that for the aux jack in my car so that it would go all the way in. Of course only if they are your headphones and don't mind to do that.

How about the headset that came with the phone? This shouldn't need any jiggering to make it plug in properly.
I would also agree with the notion that if you have a case on the phone, it may interfere with the headphone plugging in. Definitely try taking the case off (if you have one on) to see if it makes any difference.
Have you tried any headphones that don't have the microphone ("normal" headsets that aren't specially intended to use with smartphones)? Its just odd that a AUX cable works, and headphones don't. The only thing I can think that can be different is the hardware and software differences that are associated with the microphone (buttons, etc.).
Are there specific lines of code I can look at in the build .prop? I've gotten half the battle covered by Uninstalling HK and fixing permissions /wiping dalvik. Again music plays perfectly through stereo, whether aux, wifi or bt. One sided when headphones are used. There has to be some funky code going on.

hi guys, basicallynim wondering if anybody else is experiencing the issues that i am.
Essentially im ecstatically happy with my z2, except the headphone port seems faulty. While driving i use the 3.5mm jack on the z2 to connect tk the car.
This is when i noticed the faults with the headphone port. If i insert a 3 or 4 pid connector, either a 3.5-3.5 cable, a standard 3pin headphone connector, or a 4 pin headset, a slight nudge on the connector disconnects the headphones/cable and music stops. Sometimes, google now gets triggered as well. The same things happen if i twist the jack, whatever is connected. It also seems quite loose, and there is no positive click when a jack is inserted.
I would upload a video showing what happens, but my only video camera is in my z2.........
It has also not been submerged/wet at all, and is kept in a case (i tested the jack without the case as well, but it still happens)
In my brand new Z2 I also don't hear that click when inserting headphones but they are in the deep all the way. I tested 4 different earphones and speakers but none gave me any problems(I was twisting jack and trying to move it but connection was too tight), no loss of sound. I think you should get your Z2 serviced or replaced. Also I have a question. When you plug in normal headphones or speakers(not the noise cancelling ones), do you get a notification saying that you connected them or not? I only get something like this when Smart Connect is enabled...
I have issues with jack too. When you pulg in headphones, it sometimes wont recognize that something was plugged in, but if you try to twist the jack in the phone, it may get working (the sound is clear, no loss). The problem is when you put the phone in a pocket and walk, the jack is moving there so it is very likely to stop working and u have to twist it again.
When I bought the phone, I had no problems with it, but after first water test (which resulted fine, there was no water inside), the problem started.
Got the phone for 2 months and the issue still persists.
My solution is plugging in, search for the right spot before it starts worrking and walk with phone in a hand, holding the cable so it wont move in the jack.
i got it replaced in the end, had the new one for 2 weeks with no issues, so definitely a hardware fault.
Headphone jack not working after submerging in the water
Hi,
I submerged my xperia z2 last night in the swimming pool. It's been 12 hours since I submerged my phone. Every thing is running perfectly except for my headphone jack. The first time I used my earphone there's small amount of water coming out from the hole. The headphones is not working because it's not fully dried from water? I tried cleaning it up and blowing some air for some particles to get dry but it still not working.
I need help please because my phone is not insured because I bought it online
What should I do?!
