Hi,
I supose there are a lot of topics like this, but I want something different.
I have a xperia s, but the phone has broken and I am sending it to the manufacturer. The only other phone I have lying around is a htc hero, but it is extremely slow!
It has already been rooted, but now I am wondering if someone can recommend me a custom rom. The only things I will need is the ability to call and sms people. I won't be using this phone for long (I hope), so any other functions won't be necessary. I just want it to be fast enough.
Thank you in advance for the help,
Jerodev.
Two of the fastest roms for the hero would be Heroine ++ and Vanilla Eclair 6.2. Heroine is sense, the same version that came with the phone (i think) but faster. Vanilla Eclair is a very early version of stock android and its very fast (well, for this phone). If all you're going to do is call and sms then those should be fine
Btw they are very old roms so I have no idea if the download links still work. If they don't then you could look at either decked_x or shpongle which are both stock android gingerbread roms

Are there any ROM's optimized for gaming to run raging thunder, fruit ninja etc.?

HTC keyboard typing is slow and hard - thats what Im noticing.
Is there any way to remove the HTC goodies and make it a standard ROM without the goodies and go with the defaults that you see in the TMobile G1 1.5?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=557586
Hmm, its not really slow. If you are using stock rom, ditch that first and go for modaco 2.2 or 2.73.405.5 (unless you got the indian 2.73.751 version Hero which is almost identical to 405 but we dont get market by default here ) .
Also try to type in landscape as much as you can, bigger buttons, easier to type and faster.
The Ion rom is not really fully functional yet.
What are you comparing it with ?
Personally, I am finding it better than the wife's iPhone (she is using a hero as well now and is happy with it).
Zuber
Im using the Indian stock (which does include market for a change).
Im comparing it with the TMobile G1 1.5 ROM's keyboard without all the eye-candy that HTC loaded it with (the eye candy is great but I think a vanilla version or Android default) would give more speed and ram to play with.
^^ So you and I have same version. I heard reports that some people got the phone without market here. ( Was yours airtel locked? ).
I didnt bother with stock rom to be honest. I was using Polish white Hero before which I sold to get the black one locally, did the nandroid backup just to keep backup of stock rom, rooted the phone and flashed it with Modaco 2.2. and it seems pretty responsive to be honest ( All apps are on Memory card ). And I do not experience any lag here. Maybe I am already used to this device.
Just do nandroid backup of stock rom and try the Modaco. You can always roll back.
Cannot say I share your opinion (the OP's). I never had a device with a real keyboard, so I have always used onscreen keyboards for years now.
The Hero's keyboard is one of the best I've used so far, if not the best.
I am using the compact qwerty now, and with the help of the capacitive screen and xT9 I'm typing faster on a phone than I've ever done!
So same as the rest, give that new rom a try (or MoDaCo 2.2, which I'm also using).
However, the keyboard is REALLY LAGGY when typing in the browsers (whether stock browser or Steel browser). In other apps like messages, handcent and mail, it is just fine.
No lag on my keyboard in the stock browser on Modaco 2.2

I'm using Korean version of SGS2(SHW-M250S, GINGERBREAD.EL21), and I have few questions about ICS.
First question : I could find leaked ICS roms for GT-I9100, but I couldn't find for mine. Is there any roms for SHW-M250S? Or can I just install GT-i9100 firmware on my SGS2?
Second question : what is advantages of ICS compared to Gingerbread?
Thanks for reading and please let me know if you know something about them.

don't know about first, but as for the second, ICS is a WAY better OS than gingerbread. due to hardware acceleration and much better multicore support its a lot faster, has tons of great new UI improvements (see any galaxy nexus video) including the best multitasking support of any android version yet, and lots of extra goodies like face unlock and cellular data managers.
I can't answer your first question, but as a 2 month long owner of the Galaxy Nexus, I will say that ICS is leagues ahead of Gingerbread. As I'm sure you've heard, ICS is "faster" and "more efficient," but when I think about it the speed is not what really hits home for me. The whole OS and set of default apps are so thoughtfully designed now. I used to try and replace all of the stock apps with market apps like Dolphin Browser and Go SMS, but now the stock apps are (in my opinion) the best out there. I think that the stock launcher, sms app and browser are probably the biggest reasons to switch.
That said, the development world hasn't yet made the jump to ICS, so you aren't missing out on man market apps by not being on ICS. It is my hope that we'll see more of a push for ICS app support.
Thanks for replies! I will try flashing it.

dont even try that you would only have a $500 DLLS Toy it will brick your phone in every way and wait they have different Modems, Kernels etc
i flashed ICS to my gt-i9100m on the Bell network in canada. little glitchy at the start, but now the only function that doesn't work is the GPS.. had to expect something wouldnt work...

why not HTC One V, it has similar but better hardware and ICS 4.0.
most important, it is cheap.

Cyanogen Mod 9?
In answer to your question yes ICS is available for the desire S in the form of Cyanogen Mod 9.
Whilst I know other roms are available such as Ice Cold Sandwich they all appear to be at least loosely based on CM9.
Although it is described as alpha I have installed it on both my desire s as well as a friends and it works without issue on both devices perfectly all of the hardware is now functional with the exception of the FM radio but there are plenty of online radio apps, or you could just use the MP3 player.
The only small issue you may encounter were problems with games such as temple run although this has been fixed in the latest release (09/05/2012)
I have owned the desire s for just under a year now, it is my first android phone but from experience of viewing friends phones it is still one of the superior android devices on the market. Whilst it does not have the dual core processor or huge amounts of ram of the current flagship phones there is a large community behind the device as there is the desire HD and Z. Therefore there are regular roms available for it. On another note in terms of the phones power, I have not found a single app or game my phone cannot run well including full 3d games such as the pocket version of Minecraft.
In terms of battery life after a year of use I can still manage about 2 days with sparing use and a sense based rom or a whole day with heavy use on a sense rom.
With the new CM9 I am managing 2 days of medium to heavy use and 4 days of sparing use. I believe this is due to the lack of the sense ui.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
Hi guys. This is not a "best rom" thread. I'd like some advice please.
A couple of months ago I rooted my girlfriend's xpu because she complained it was slow. I sympathise because I have an s3 mini with similar chipset and roughly the same specs, yet even my original stock rom was faster and more efficient.
I tried jbexperience and freexperia cm9.1. Both aren't exactly what I expected.
She regularly uses Facebook, whatsapp, email and plays candy crush and jewel star. On cm9.1 her battery life is horrible even with greenify and the phone is unstable. The ram fills up very quickly and the phone frequently reboots. She also had problems with apps that use webcoreview force closing.
Now as you can probably tell, I'm a veteran rom flasher and have been doing it for a long time on various phones. My old wildfire buzz and my son's hero are rooted with custom roms and are generally smoother and more stable than the xperia u. They are old and the hardware is ancient.
So my question for you lovely, fair members of the xperia u group today is, can you please recommend a stable and battery friendly rom for the xperia u?
Please don't say "this rom is best" or "this thread is bad", etcetera..
I can't try them all as my girlfriend has far less patience for this than I do.
Thank you for your understanding and patience, and please be nice.

Gb-rocks and remove the bloatware you don't want. if your bootloader is unlocked then flash supercharged kernel too

Thank you. This looks more like the kind of thing I'm looking for. Gingerbread for a newer model, using less ram than ics crap. My gf will be happy with this although I'll probably need to modify play store to show more apps
Yes of course bootloader is unlocked
Is there a specific supercharged kernel you're talking of?
If there are any other roms you feel are worth mentioning please do Thanks again

If you are OK with CM then SlimCM ROM is worth a mention.

Almost sure there is nothing faster than the Gingerbread version as just the core is going to take less resources.
Anyway for me the stock ICS 6.1.1.B.1,1.100 firmware works pretty well. For that one I just installed it, rooted, and removed some bloatware (just the ones that came with the ROM from the phone provider that released that firmware and an app that my own phone provider installs and some other apps I don't use like office suite and one or too more (some are apps you can even uninstall without root), but I removed nothing from Xperia apps). I didn't even installed anything else to enhance performance, no greenify not lag seeder and I'm pretty satisfied with performance. Facebook sometimes doesn't work as good as I would like to but in my opinion that's more a problem of facebook app which is a **** than a problem of the phone OS.
The last official release 6.1.1.B.1.1.54 firmware is horrible but that 6.1.1.B.1.1.100 works pretty well. I just tested only two more ICS ROMs and they didn't satisfied me more than the stock. I really prefer to continue with stock firmware and as It works really good for me that's what I choose.
By the way I don't think the game you mention is something to worry about. It is not one with a high resources requirement in my opinion. So it will work pretty well in any ROM with good enough performance.
Hi,
I've read that KitKat would need less resource compared to JB.
Since there are already ROM's based on JB for the Legend, do you think that a custom ROM will rapidly appear based on KitKat for this phone?
Thanks.
No.I don't think there are any developers left on this forum.
I too believe this won't happen, sadly. JB for Legend wasn't such a good idea, it simply can't run smoothly on that device. But, if what google says is true (about the hardware requirements), then 4.4 could be the greatest thing that has happened to this phone in a while. I still use my Legend as an mp3 player, but i would just love it if it was more functional, so i could use it in some high-risk situations (to avoid breaking my GN4). This could be Legends last chance to die with honor
Personally I have the Baked Blackbean Rom on my Legend (JB thus) and I'm rather satisfied of this Rom (thank you to the team BTW).
It lags a bit and there are some bugs but it allows me to play with the latest versions of the apps (I love the latest version of gmail for example).
Give it a try if you haven't already. The Legend deserves a better end than as a mere MP3 player .

I'm also using JB on my Legend, but it is not really that stable (don't get me wrong, congrats to the developers, they did a great job), but it just feels too "heavy" on the phone. My biggest problem was the low amount of internal memory - yes, i know you can create a partition on the sd card, but i've never managed to accomplish it. Tried everything, just wouldn't work. So I really can't use the latest app version, as i can have about three apps installed at a time xD
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. The app that launches 10 sec after you put your finger on it...
For the internal storage, I use Link2SD, which actually works pretty well. When I check, it tells me that I got something like 280MB in use and still have 70MB free.
I just created like you said a second partition (using a soft [named Mini-Tool if I remember correctly] in Windows while my phone was plugged in USB) and then using this second partition to install my apps.
Are you interested in trying again ? You have another phone but, anyway...
I've been part of legend community for about 2 years now, never got into full blown deving, rather doing relatively small mods, tweeks and stuff for personal use only (read, cutting my teeth with android).
Activity in legend has unfortunately died over the past 3-6 months and I haven't seen much from our last major Dev zeubea for long time, so unless there is a skilled Dev equal or better than zeubea out there that loves the HTC legend, its not going to happen. Even then given that jb version never really got finished to stable version, I very much doubt KitKat would come anywhere near the level that jb reached simply due to lack of source code for the required harware drivers...
Ya never know your luck in a big city...

Well, let's hope such a developer exists than...
KK has been ported to the HTC Desire so there's hope
and sorry to hijack, but is anyone willing to test some gapps? Would be appreciated, cheers!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47101145&postcount=204
Ah cool! That's indeed a good news!
Thanks for the info.
KK was said to be optimized for devices with 512 MB+ RAM via Project Svelte. The Legend unfortunately doesn't even have that much.
But, I ask, why would everyone ideally want to have their Legends running Android 4.x? I don't understand why because although Gingerbread is now running on less than half of all Android devices, it was the last OS on our phone to run fluidly and with stability. With JB and above, Google's cramming more and more features into Google Play services, which really brings down the space the Legend has in its internal memory for apps. KK just won't run like Google intended to on this device. I just don't understand why people want the latest and greatest on a ~4 year old device. Maybe you have your reasons, and I'll respect that, but I can't think of any reason why personally.
It hurts to say, but with the Legend nearing four years since announcement, this phone isn't worth being developed for anymore. It wasn't that huge of a hit, like the original Desire or the Sensation. Therefore, it tends to be more forgotten. It doesn't have the computing power of neither of these devices, nor does it even come close to it, so while the aforementioned devices are slowly getting the bleeding edge, we'll be getting it slower, if at all.
It's a harsh reality, but if you want the best experience in Android possible, it's time to upgrade. ~Four years, that's around two two-year contracts. For Legend owners in Canada, your contract should have been up just this past summer.
This phone will always be a classic, guiding HTC through its brilliant design language with the HTC One flagship and its variants. Its legacy is shown on the devices that succeeded it. Unfortunately, I don't believe it has anything more to bring.
Hi Asovse1,
Thank you for your opinion.
You're right when you say that 4 years are an eternity for a smartphone but personally right now I can't afford a new device that would have for example the screen quality of the Legend (which has an amoled screen while even recent phone still use LCD). If I buy a new phone around 99 $ (my budget) I would have a screen with a poor resolution so the change is not worthy.
I have a JB Rom on my Legend and I can enjoy the last version of GMail for example that has really cool stuff. And this version of gmail runs rather smoothly on my phone, so why not ?
The Legend doesn't have 512MB RAM, for this reason he wasn't supposed to support ICS, but it worked, so while it works with the new version of Android, I will hope that a talented developer will build a Rom for this fantastic phone .
Or maybe I can wait just a few days ans see what the Moto G has to offer...
Cheers.
Hear hear, someone in the same boat as myself. Still using my Legend for daily use. I am on CM7.2 stable. Only GPS is not reliable. Tried a lot higher roms, never worked out well.
I am looking into importing a Chinese phone. Nice specs and an affordable price. Only risk is a broken phone within 2 years...

Hi Wim,
Have you ever tried the Baked one as I mentioned earlier?
I have it on my Legend and use it daily without any problem. And the GPS works too, even if sometimes it needs some time to find itself, once it's done, it works perfectly.
Hello there,
I have great news for all the fans of the Legend: it might get KitKat !
