Hey everybody-
So my sister's phone has been acting strange on her lately and she also wanted the new play store (she is still stuck with market on stock 2.1) so I figured I would figure out a new operating system for her. But I soon ran into this annoying error.

USB Debugging is on, it is in usb mass storage mode. it is completely stock-ish, I restored her to 2.1 earlier upon her request and it boots to say I9100 first then reverts to the way it is supposed to. Computer won't connect to it, odin wont recognize it even when it is in download mode. It isnt the cable because I have tried two samsung oem cables now which both work for everything with my gs3 and the same cables seconds later dont work for her...Although it does charge through the connection. ADB won't recognize it either. Any help would be appreciated.
I also have multiple USB cables and all work on my friends vibrant but the only one that works for me is the T-Mobile USB from their store. I have no clue why this is but it's true. I would download drivers for vibrant , if that doesn't work it's probably the cable. Try a cable from official T-Mobile store, they have a 30 day return policy. There is no need to use Odin if you're trying to upgrade though, all you need is clock work recovery and a custom ROM to flash via recovery mode.

restart the pc after install...it will install the necessary drivers....

*start kies mini and follow on screen (I assumed that you will update it officially)
*after you connect the phone to pc it will automatically discoverd but without debugging kies does not recognize (in my case)
*try changing the USB ports on you pc or laptop when plugging the data cable....

Just a warning, kies will most likely brick your phone and turn it into a paper weight. I would advise against upgrading with kies. The official upgrade is terrible anyway, your better off flashing a custom 2.2 ROM or even jelly bean (4.2) if you want something new.

I really dont like having kies installed at all because even when closed it still has screwed with my odin in the past. So ill just use the toobox exe from the stickies to work with drivers. Yeah but I still need to figure out how to connect to the computer. The drivers are all set properly. I guess I'll try rereuninstalling it and rereinstalling them again. Then reboot both and make sure USB debugging and USB mass storage. Then if all else fails, I'll try messing with it with my puppy Linux. But if I am never able to get it connected to the computer again, is there any way root the vibrant without the computer? Something like ExynosAbuse or Framaroot?

You can look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 to root your phone with update.zip method (very simple). Use astro file manager or something similar to move the update.zip to the root of the internal SD card and reboot to recovery mode and reinstall packages twice. Note - update.zip method A will just root your phone and method B will give you clockwork mod recovery mode which allows you to install custom ROMs that come pre-rooted.

Thank You iTz Keefy, now all I need is the newest stock version rooted in a flashable zip format that will work with ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.2 coming from rooted 2.1 with iTz Keefy's sited method, anybody have a link? I have done extensive searching to find this file already, but to no avail, I cant seem to find exactly what I am looking for.
Edit: I would actually be looking for maybe even a jelly bean ROM doesn't rally matter if it stock like I said, all that matters is that it is suuuuuper stable (as I will likely mod it to that point and then just have her use it regularly from there). Also with the whole clockwork mod being only 2.5.1.2 restriction - I don't know of any way to update this because ROM manager isn't compatible with 2.1 and I'm not so sure you can update cwm through cwm...
When you flash a ROM cwm recovery will upgrade itself if need be. If you want something really stable I would recommend a 2.2 ROM. There is a stock 2.2 zip here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674519. I personally prefer Fishman's 2.2 ROMs but that's your choice. You can look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t= and check to see which ROM you prefer.

I am assuming when you flashed back you forgot to flash a stock kernel at the same time. try using odin to get back to stock and you should be fine

Was gonna ask the same thing.
If you can you should be able to to use ODIN to get back to stock.
Sounds like you forgot to flash a 2.1 kernel before you rebooted.
yaddayaddayadddaaaaa
Surprised no one has said "OMG! WRONG SECTION! I'M NOT GONNA HELP YOU!"
But yea, flash a kernel if you can can. Check the Bionix website for them. Also, in the future, make sure you READ everything pertaining to a rom you flash. If you had, you would have known you needed to flash a 2.1 kernel if you wanted to revert.
Odin 1.3
Yeah I've done the same thing before. When you downgrade from 2.2 you must flash a 2.1 kernal first. Best thing to do is re-flash back to stock with Odin. Make sure you use Odin version 1.3 and not version 1. Search the dev forum for how to flash with Odin. The Vibrant is very hard to brick permanently so you should be able to recover from this soft brick.

use Odin to restore your rom!
I think the easiest thing to do is flash any of the ROM that have Kernels in them, I have only had to use odin once, and that was just to try it out. I always keep stuff on my card, But i guess if you didnt going back to stock through odin would be the next best thing.

Depends on what you flash, but even if its stock with no root, root is very easy on the phone, just do whatever worked for you the first time.
I have tried all root methods. I just bought a new i777 and the previous owner had the folks at the AT&T store wipe it and when they did that they updated it . So it is up to date as of Today. But I cannot get it to show up in ODIN. I have tried normal Odin and Odin one click. I have tried 3 computer and 2 different connection cords. Any help ?

You must have the USB drivers installed. In Add/Remove programs or Uninstall or change a program, depending on Windows version, you should see Samsung USB Drivers for Mobile Phones. If that is not present, install the correct driver first.
Next, not knowing your level of experience.... make sure you are using Odin correctly.
How to use stand-alone Odin3 to flash firmware:
Follow and recheck each of the following steps. Do them in order listed, as some steps are dependent on previous steps. Instructions are for Odin3 v1.85. It should work with any version of Odin, but some details, like color of items, may be different.
1.) Open Odin on the Windows Desktop.
2.) Have the USB cable plugged into USB port on the computer, but *Not* plugged in to the phone.
3.) Shut the phone off.
4.) While holding down the vol+ & vol- keys, plug micro-usb plug into phone.
5.) In Odin, you should get the yellow box under where it says ID:COM with the text 0:[COMx], and in the Message area, <ID:0/00x> Added!! where x is some number, usually 1-8.
6.) In Odin, make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked and all other items are not checked.
7.) Click on the PDA button. Browse to the tar file you want to install and select it so its path appears in the text edit box next to the button.
8.) Make sure the check box next to the PDA button is checked.
9.) Click the Start button.
10.) You should see the green progress bar advancing.

You don't say, but I am going to assume you double checked the list I posted to make sure you are following the correct proceedure. The steps must be followed in order as some steps are dependent on the preceeding one. If you havn't done that, please do.
Possible things that could be at fault: USB driver, cable, USB port on computer, microusb port on phone, the computer itself, and user error. You've tried some of these things already: Uninstall and reinstall driver, use a different computer, try all the USB ports on the computer, if computer is a desktop use USB port directly connected to mother board, use a different cable preferably the original one that came with the phone - try as many as you can get your hands on, verify that your phone's microusb port is working correctly. By a process of elimination, you have to find the weak link and correct it.
I followed your list in the exact order you posted it . I'm going to buy a new cable in case that's the problem . I'll post if I get it fixed

First, enter recovery and do a wipe data/factory reset. I'm not sure which recovery you will have from the GalaxyS2Root that you flashed, but it may be 3e recovery. Whatever recovery it is, the wipe should get your phone to boot. Then follow the Guide linked in my signature to install custom binaries without incrementing the flash counter. It contains all the information you need. If you have questions, ask.

You need to uninstall Kies before running Odin. Check out the guide at the top of this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43640820&postcount=1
Not so much uninstall it, because installing Kies is an easy way (for some n00bs) to get the drivers you need installed to make Odin work, but make sure it/it's child processes aren't running in Windoze Task Manager before you try to use Odin & end them if they are. It's those that don't play nice with it.
But that's in Hopper's thread, and the whole point of the thread/having info like that in one 'reference' is so we don't have to constantly repeat ourselves everytime someone runs into problems with Odin.

All I can suggest is that you read @Hopper8 Odin troubleshooting guide carefully. You will find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2345831
Hopefully it will be able to solve your problem.

OP - take it to someone who knows what they're doing. I suggested that thread (which covers every possible thing that could stop Odin from working) this time yesterday, you've clearly shown you're unable/unwilling to even try everything (anything?) in the thread. So until such time as you do (or do as I suggested in the first sentence of this post), your phone stays busted. We can't fix it for you, only you can.

Hi guys, i realy need your help, my phone is dead.
In the beggining i had a problem with power controller: Phone thought that it is constantly charging (For that time i thought that the problem is in micro usb port or in firmware)
I decided to flash it and go to stock via backup made by CWM a year ago.
But during this process the phone made a reboot by itself and after that there was no loading. I could see only name of the device and thats it.
No recovery. Only download mode.
I gave my phone to service center, they told that I have two problems: 1st is connected to power controller, 2 - dead flash memory. They say that port usb is ok (tried different board with micro usb port). They try flash it via Riff box Jtag but process stopped at data.img.
I took the phone and tried to flash it via Heimdall with brick fix pit.
After using this pit file, the phone was flashed normally and even turned on normally.
But in the phone info menu I saw no any data about internal memory. (It was damaged and required format). I tried format through phone menu and it did nothing.
I decided to flash the phone via Odin with normal 16 GB pit file and had a bad luck. I experienced freez during re-partition. After this, phone is a complete brick.
When I connect it to PC without battery pressing vol down and rower buttons it connects as unknown device but there is nothing on the phone display. No recovery, no download mode. Nothing - just reflection of my frustrated face).
Currently i'm tring to make a Jig, maybe it'll put it in the download mode, but hope is dying...
I've herad somewhere that it is possible to put it in the download mode in linux. Any other suggestions?
Replace motherboard.

Is it the only way?
If the EMMC is corrupted & a JTAG failed, that's the fix.
Hi guys. I finally made the change to android a few months back after iphoning for several years. I'm so glad I did. Everything I wanted that Apple wouldn't let me have is here. I wasn't too bothered about rooting up until I saw a video on youtube detailing the advantages. I was quite surprised you can get free tethering (which is something that would be very handy). Also since the jelly bean update my phone became a bit laggy and i heard you can speed it up via 'setcpu'.
After days or reading, reading and yet more reading I took the plunge and rooted my s3 i9300 via Odin. The first file I used said successful but a 'check root' app said it wasn't. I found another file for my spec and tried that and it seems to have rooted now.
So here are my questions that although I've read alot about I haven't really found an answer I'm confident with to take the next step....
1) Can I just turn on tethering on my settings or do I have to install or download a certain app to run it through? I'm on T-mobile if that makes a difference and I'm from the UK.
2) The CWM that is installed is not the same one I keep reading about. I found an updated version on this site but can I just install it via ODIN or do I need to uninstall the one currently on the phone.
3) I would like to try a fresh install of a ROM so i have a clean foundation. I'm not fussed about backing up my apps etc and all my contacts are sync'd via google. At this time I'm quite happy to keep the phone standard-ish looking while I learn more about rooting and roms and have heard cyanogenmod are more popular for the close to stock roms. I have also read they have released a 4.4. Is there a stable version yet? After I have my CWM can I just flash the ROM straight on. Any links for a stable cyanogenmod??
4) Any info on removing the bloatware?
Thanks guys in advance. I'm sure you've heard these questions time and time again. I was an Apple Jailbreaker for along time so hopefully I wont be too hard to educate.
Ben
1. What are you tethering? Simplest way is wirelessly but that doesn’t require root anyway.
2. Yes just update via odin.
3. CM is aosp based rom so it's actually fairly close to stock android rather than stock Samsung, have a look in the Android development forum for a list of custom roms. I won't recommend a particular rom as they all have benefits. Aosp roms cm included have issues due to Samsung controlling some of the proprietary software meaning some things hdmi out, FM radio etc either don't work or have limited function.
4. If you flash a custom rom, you are reducing bloat to a greater or lesser extent. But you may also be sacrificing some Google or Samsung apps depending on your chosen rom, again have a look at the rom threads as there are seriously too many to list.
And welcome to the dark side and enjoy the freedom.

No by tethering I just meant for my laptop or the kids ipad's etc if we're out and about with no wifi. So I can just use the usual stock tethering as opposed to having to use an app?
Is CMW the better one to use?
I shall browse the roms and try and find something that's compatible.
Thanks for your time
JJEGAN I shall have a read of these. Thanks very much.

Stock tethering should work fine, that's what I use. If i was you I'd stick with a Samsung based rom to start with as you'll find most of the apps are available and all features should work, but once you've got the bug the skies the limit.
CWM is probably the benchmark recovery, but if you want a slightly more featured one you could go with Philz.
Just remember nandroid is your friend, keep a backup and if a ROM doesn't suit you just restore.

Many Thanks. Will read the above links tonight and let you know if I still have any questions.
Appreciated!

Hi. Well I've tried to update the CWM through Odin and it says it has passed etc but when I go back into the phone it is still the old version.
Do I need to unlock my bootloader first? I was under the impression the i9300 bootloaders are unlocked from stock?
If so I'm running 4.3 so am I right in reading that it cannot be unlocked?
Another thing. When I plug my phone into Odin nothing happens. If I connect my phone first then open Odin it recognises it. All be it could be an issue with Odin I did it this way for the initial root and it worked fine?
Please helppppppp. I got the bug now. Just like the old apple jailbreak days

You do not need to use Odin to change recoveries if you already have a custom recovery installed..There are two versions of recovery .tar.md5 (you flash these with Odin) or .zip files (you flash these with your current custom recovery)
I would also recommend using PhilZ recovery it as alot more options.
Ok thanks. So do I add the zip version to my SD card? If so how do I run it from there? Via the CWM app on my phone?

Yep.. Add to Ext SD card and choose same option you do to flash a rom (install zip option)... Then reboot!
Cheers pal. I'm out at the mo but will try this evening and report back. Cheers

Should I try that then? Any particular version of the I9300 I need?

Don't flash using CWM, use the recovery, I have read reports of issues using CWM on the i9300

I did plenty of research and didn't see anything myself. What can I flash with Instead? Can I flash something straight over the top?

Sorry my confusion I didn't realise you where using the cwm manager app! This is why you are having problems I never use apps to flash roms or recoveries they always seem to have problems. You need to manualy flash from recovery itself boot into recovery volume up + home+power and flash from there.
Flash PhilZ recovery from there....
Hi thanks. Maybe that's why. I've been doing volume down, home and power.
Flash using odin?
Thanks

That's download mode lol easy mistake your not the first! Yes flash with Odin takes less than a minute to do..
I want to revert an ATT i717 rooted, with CWM ver.6, custom KK rom back to ATT stock rom (I did try KIES but it didn't recognize phone as I understand due to rom being custom.) I don't have a back up of the original stock rom. All download links I have come across are dead. Need help to locate working DL links.
2-Wifey has the same exact phone rooted with CWM ver. 6 with stock JB rom. I am wondering if I take a back up of that and flash it to my phone if that will be ok or if that's a chance for a brick?

You have posted in the development forum. Try Q&A.
Also if you can't find Odin file here, try to search google. You may find an active somewhere else. Other than that, you can wait. if I ever get off work I could probably scrounge up a copy to my dropbox.
Let me know if you find. Sorry, I won't have time until tomorrow afternoon . In middle of a work marathon on 2 jobs.

here's a link to stock jb:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8CfFE5fSiMQS1NuZVZmUnRNYVU/view?usp=sharing
it includes the rom, cwm recovery, supersu, odin, kernel, and modem.
odin the rom first, then the recovery.
copy supersu to the phone and install thru cwm.
you'll need to update binaries.
also included is the current cwm recovery i use to install kit kat roms.

Finally d/l at work, odined the rom and encountered "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue, Please select recovery mode in kies and try again"
Phone cannot enter recov. mode nor download mode. I tried kies and 2 issues came up 1 my phone has no serial number, I entered wife's S/No. (same exact phone, both made in Korea) but the second problem is that kies wants me to turn off phone, and enter d/l mode which isn't coming up.
I tried my JIG thingy but same screen comes up.
How do I fix this?

Could be, really don't know for sure. Note has this screen. Anything I attempt it's resulting in the following screen below. DL mode, hit volume up and bam, same screen. Recovery, same deal, try to boot normally = same. Even a jig gets the DL mode first screen and then bam! Is there any way to fix this or Is the phone at the point of jtag repair, or worse a brick?
