So I have an Asus Infinity at the moment. Not very happy with it as it lags terribly and its user experience isn't great (vastyl improved with CleamRom but still not seemless).
I'm thinking of replacing the TF700 with a Nexus 10 or a Sony Tablet Z when its out towards the end of May. Ideally I'd have a tablet with a microSD card but for the £100 (+) differential over the tablet Z I may be able to live with this.
Anyone else thinking about either of these tablets? Any other thoughts or comments?

I have the Nexus 10 and i'm really happy with it. Once I saw the weight and how thin it is, I liked it. However, the price, the angle of the screen, the battery (6000 mah and nexus 10 has 9000), and also the long time that sony takes to upgrade the android, made me not care about this tablet.
@OP: in the exact same boat.
the TF700 has gotten worse over time, despite CleanROM, Brower2RAM, other tweaks — or perhaps my tolerance for a $500 tablet performing like crap has finally diminished to the point where i'm just can't take it anymore.
Tablet Z sounds great, but like IKBZI has stated, the puny battery could definitely be an issue. also viewing angles on the phone Z has been pretty crap, just hope that the tablet is better. microSD is a plus though. the premium price you pay for a Sony irks me though, especially when it's not even running the latest OS version.
that said, i think the Nexus 10 is also a contender because of the front-facing speakers and that massive resolution. i already have a tablet with 1920 x 1200 resolution, you know? however, the colour gamut sucks and maybe there isn't enough horsepower to push all those pixels consistently (based on various reports of lag, etc. -- i know there are plenty happy about it though). plus having to pay extra for a pogo charger, and still have slow charge times, etc.
i'm waiting to see how the Z turns out in reviews, but also eagerly awaiting news of a what a next-gen Nexus 10 might look like.

The Nexus 10 has issues from thermal throttling that cause lag on the stock kernel. Get a custom kernel and your issues will go away. And especially KTManta with its massive GPU overclock you can get great gaming performance on the Nexus 10.
Personally I would choose the Nexus 10 over a Sony tablet because I like the more active development of Nexus devices and how easy they are to mod, and get the latest versions of Android always.
N10, of course... Development matters...
nexus 10 ~
Buy a tablet Z now, and pretty soon you'll suffer from key lime pie envy. I don't want to buy a new tablet every year just to be able to keep up with the second newest version of android.

The next Gen Nexus 10 won't be out for a good long time though (>6 months)? The N10 looks great, however, the lack of 3G and microSD are putting me off. I could live with one, but both will be tricky.
One has to wander why it is so difficult to make an Android tablet with an HD screen, microSD, 3G and a decent battery!
I prefer to the Nexus 10 because I like the pure Android and the timely update. As for the sd card, I can find some other ways to expand the storage of Nexus 10.

No. Sony is pretty supportive of the dev community right now. I would say that the Tablet Z will get Android 5.0 almost as soon as the Nexus devices.
The decision between these tablets should be based on how much you want to spend for better looks, water resistance and all those details...
About the SD card thing: I use OTG and I don't feel too uncomfortable with it. It could be better, but that is criticism on a high level. The Nexus 10 is worth every penny.

I'm glad Sony is being supportive of the dev community but I think you'll be waiting a bit for a 5.0 update. You'll get something un-official long before something from Sony and that will still be a bit after the Nexus devices get it.
You might want to play with the Z at a Sony store if there is one near you.
The N10 is my favorite Android device. Aside from it being a Nexus and all that comes with that, the great performance, the stunning screen, I just really love the physical design, from the look/shape/feel/color, the speakers on the front to the soft touch material on the back. Reminds of the Nexus S that I also loved. Big pat on the back to the industrial design guys/gals that worked on this tablet.
the design of sony tablet z is very appealing to me, but i am really into ultra hi-res displays and the rubber of nexus 10 is quite a pleasure to hold in your hands

intriguing! thanks for the info ...
got me reading a bit about KTManta. came across the odd comment that says it affects the colours/gamut positively. anyone have info/data/screens of that? asking because there doesn't appear to be any specific settings in KTweakerT that you can change to affect colour.
if that screen was a bit closer to sRGB, i'd jump on it.

There are no settings as it is not user adjustable. There is no color control at all for any kernels or ROMs on this tablet yet, and there may never be for all we know. There are color tweaks in the KTmanta kernel that bring the RGB values much closer to what they should be, however the blue color is still very far off. These minor tweaks to the colorspace are hard coded into the kernel.

Engadget says that the sony xperia tablet z is that thin that when you do a little pression on the screen, you will see the same that happened on the old screens, when you used your finger to press the screen.
Not sure how to describe it, but I mean, when on an old screen you made pression with your finger, you could see some kind of "bubble" on it.

I personally would never buy any of the Nexus tablets. The bezel is entirely too wide. I am looking for a 10.1 inch screen , jellybean , 32G storage and 2 GB of Ram. Wifi only . The Sony Xperia Z looks good .. It has nice thin bezels. And the specs are good.

Hi All,
I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. Let me elaborate:
[Background]
Currently on my first android phone, the LG Optimus One and considering it's almost a legacy phone, it has an active dev support and even JB Roms were made for this device. However, i'm currently using the MIUI ROM nd really loving it's interface.
[Current Scenario]
A friend of mine will be coming down from USA, and asked me if i wanted anything, So i thought it will be a good time to upgrade my phone, as i am really tired of installing a custom rom almost every other week, also tired of the legacy ARMv6 phone,
So i searched in newegg, amazon for a phone under 350 USD, and narrowed down to Xperia P and Galaxy Nexus.
Now, I know that if i get a Galaxy nexus, I'm sure i wouldn't have to worry about updates and the really strong dev support, but on the other hand I really love the looks of Xperia P. Also i feel a 4 inch screen is perfect and it has a better camera too.
Now I'm really not into gaming on the phone, and would like to use the "phone as a phone" mainly, with internet browsing, music, HD videos and photography as the other uses.
I also feel that a 4.65 screen is way too big to fit in my pocket.
I have a few questions regarding the Xperia P:
So i'd like to know how the build quality of the Xperia P is?
Is having a non-removable battery a major CON?
Is the Sony 'modded' version of android good enough to not use the custom roms?
Will there be a dev support for Xperia P in terms of custom roms and kernels in the near future?
All in all, which phone do i finally choose in that budget range?
Regards,
CD

Ok, I have XP for couple of weeks. Build quality is excellent (aluminum unibody) and screen is gorgeous (bright and colorful). I think that non removable battery isnt a major CON, but the capacity could be (about a day on single charge). Sony ICS ROM is fast enough and it looks ok. We have allready couple of custom ROMs and Kernels including CM9.1 so I think that future of developing on XP is bright.
Which phone to choose? Hm, I dont know, both are good, its up to u and ur taste.
Edit: XP will get JB in Q1 2013.
P looks more slick and feels solid to the hand than GNex.
But spec-wise and current software(buttery JB), it's GNex advantage over P.
Tapatalked from my Xperia P
So Galaxy Nexus's only advantage is the super fast OS updates?
How does the camera and music compare between them? The screen isn't that important to me, as i feel there will be a negligible difference between them... Please correct me if i'm wrong

Build quality is sexy, recieved a lot of compliments from my friends, really looks and feels like a premium product despite its mid range price. Having a non removable battery is only a con if you're the type to carry around a spare battery (I dont tend to this) for when youre running low, but with quite a small battery this might be a phone that people would have liked to able to remove the battery, but you can still reset the phone without a battery pull. I very much like the experience of Sony's android, looks nice and is quite smooth in my experience, but up against JB on the nexus not so great i guess. Im hopeful for some dev support in the future, because Sony arent the best when it comes to updates right now we're close to getting cm9.1 i think, i cant really say much on what the future of this phones development holds i dont know much about development... But if you're picking between the Xperia P and Nexus, the nexus has more future support and a better screen and better chipset. Dunno about the nexus camera but ive found pictures and videos taken on my P a bit grainy, and shots taken with auto settings arent always great.. I'd still go with the P because i like the look of it, that was a big thing for me, how the phone looks.

It's kinda sad that Sony ditches it's products even before a year is completed for the phone, for example the 2011 models aren't getting any updates and i'm sure the same fate awaits the current series of Xperias.
To be honest, I'm really tired of installing custom ROMS frequently, but then i have to depend on them as my current phone(LG Optimus One) has a pathetic stock rom. But Hats off to the devs at the optimus one thread, they even managed JB(CM10) on that phone.
As long as the stock rom is decent enough, i don't mind using an 'older' version of android. Therefore the advantage of frequent updates that the galaxy nexus enjoys doesn't apply to me. i just want a stable phone.
Even the bigger screen of Nexus One is a deterrent for me. Atleast thats how i personally feel.
I'd like to know how the battery life of the Xperia P is, as i'm reading a lot of conflicting reviews regarding this part.

Battery life is decent, about one day on moderate use (1 hour of talk time, 2-3 hours on wlan, couple of sms, couple of camera shots). And about updates, I got ICS update, and one small update after that (bug fixes). XP will get JB in Q1 2013 (new rumor say in early December 2012). Three updates in less than a year, enough for u?

If you just want to use your phone as a phone without gaming or watching videos the battery should be good enough in the p.
The stock roms are great and look amazing, I prefer them to vanilla android.
The update policy of Sony is okay, even if the 2011 only 'got' ics. I mean, not many other companies update their low end / not flagship phones. Many people I know didn't even update their 2011 Xperias to ics because they don't like it (or don't care). For anyone who depends on the newest firmware there are custom roms.
I'd get a p because of the look and the camera. You can update the p to a newer firmware with custom Roms but there is no way you'll ever get a better camera etc. for the nexus.

I feel the screen legibility outdoors is unbeatable in the case of the XP (maybe due to the extra white pixel) , though I have only compared it to the nexus s and HTC legend...
I like the feel and class of aluminium finish (HTC and Sony) more than the plastic feel of Samsung...
Outdoor shots using the stock Sony camera are truly brilliant in detail, but I wish I could say the same with indoor photos and low light photos -both are afflicted by a great amount of noise...
For music, as mentioned earlier, you get the Walkman app, nuff said
I get a day's worth of battery life with moderate 3g/WiFi usage and 1hour of calls, but I carry around my charger just in case and I have a car charger for busier days... Sony's implementation of fast charging is also good, the battery reaches 90% within an hour...
The software updates for Galaxy Nexus will definitely extend beyond JB, but the same cannot be said about Sony...
I ordered the Xperia P guys
Thanks to everyone for helping me making the decision
I realise posting in this section will get me biased reviews, but Im 99% sure the xperia tablet s is right for me just want a few opnions from people who have one.
My situation is that my windows laptop has about had it, it still works but even after a fresh format it just doesnt keep up with me these days. For the first time ever since my first wndows 3.1 machine I am wanting to move away from microsoft completly and move across to android (I will be keepig the windows laptop in a cupboard just in case theres something I cant do on android such as root a phone and such, you just never know)
I got myself my first android phone back in April which is an xperia T and I have fallen in love with it, I have rooted it, unlocked the boot loader and now got it running exactly how I want with no glitches, at the time it was a close call between the T and the Samsung S3 however after owning the T I am glad I went with sony over sammy mainly for how professional and business like it feels, the samsung just looks and feels like a childs phone compared in my opinion
This leads me to the tablet obviously the xperia z tablet would be my ideal choice, but I just cant warrant having that much in a tablet so my options came down to:
Xperia Tablet S
Nexus 10
Galaxy Tab 2 10.1
I really want to stay with the Sony Brand mainly because I love their take on android over samsung or stock android, Im just a little worried that Im buying something that is a dead or at least fast dying tablet? Mainly because sony seem to have discontinued everything now, obviously they are really pushing the z phone and tableand seem to be neglecting almost every other model
Would I be better going with the much more popular tab 2, samsung do seem to keep things well updated and there is a much larger raange of accessories?
Or paying out a little more and getting the superior Nexus 10? The display sounds fantastic and I am sure I would love the nexus 10, but its quite a lot me expensive than the s
I would use it for emails, typing on the internet in forums, surfing the net and controlling my synology disk station, then maybe when me and the misses go away watching a film, but that would be about as far as I would ever need to push the tablet
Just wanting to hear real world opinions and such on the xperia tablet s, if you have one, do you with you had something else or do you love it?

Wait for 2nd gen Nexus 10. These Sony tabs are locked down and don't really get any updates anymore. I would wait for the next Nexus 10, and either get the new Nexus 10, or get a used 1st gen Nexus 10 when the prices drop.

Thanks I have been half thinking that, I just love the Sony android style, like the idea of phone and tablet being the same. Does the final fw for the xps have issues or is it a great firmware? If it's perfect I don't really need future updates, however if it's poor and the bootloader is locked, guess I would be stuck. Thanks

Right now, the XTS has some issues with Wi-Fi even though one of the updates was supposed to fix it, and I've heard of a bug where the Tegra 3 will only use 2 cores instead of all 4. The core count bug is fixable with a root app, but it's not exactly permanent and it doesn't always work. And trust me, even though you say you won't mind not getting updates, once you flash 4.4 or some future version of android on your phone, you will change your mind. The screen on the XTS is crap too, with bad color saturation, low resolution, and bad viewing angles. You would be much happier with a Nexus 10.

There are plenty of Sony themes for ROMs with the theme engine anyway, so if you unlock the bootloader on the Nexus you could make it look similar to a Sony anyway

Yeah thanks for the suggestion as I said in my original post its a little more than I want to have in a tablet to be honest.
I have actually ended up buying a nexus 10 and a 2nd gen nexus 7, as I couldnt decide which would be right for me, Ill have a good go with both of them and decide before factory resetting one and sticking it back on ebay, fortunatly good condition second hand ones go for about £5 less than brand new ones on ebay.
I just couldnt decide between them if I wanted the screen size or the weight advantage
I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the Nexus 9? And if I would be worth selling the Nexus 10 and jumping ship out wait until 5.0 lollipop is out and then see how out tablets hold their own.

Wait for the update. It's said to have improved performance on nexus devices.

I'm gonna wait for the update on mine. I really hope it improved the tablets performance and battery life. Because my batteries starting to suck. If it doesn't really make a difference i may sell mine but i probably won't get the nexus 9. I'm waiting to see how the xperia z4 tab turns out because the z3 compact like like a beast though i want something bigger.

I'm going to wait and see what "L" brings to the N10. Still a very good device in my opinion.
Having Similar thoughts!
The specs bump up is not that signficant for an 'upgrade' to N9. I would prefer to hold on the nexus 10 unless there is a very good trade in offer.
Yeah I think I'll wait then. I was so disappointed with the kitkat update as it seemed to of made my tablets performance rubbish. When I had it, it was quick, snappy and a dream then the dreaded update and went down hill from there. I hope the 'L' update sorts that. But I can be doing with the wait haha so jealous of the guys with there nexus 4/5 haha.
I love my N10 and don't really have any issues with it. Like many, I use a custom ROM because it seems to get faster response to bug fixes and has more customizations. At first there were only a few ROMs and now there are many of them to choose. If I were to consider an upgrade, it would be to for possibly a bigger unit such as a 12" or 14" - even though I like the 10".
Already ordered Nexus 9. 10's battery is getting weak, screen has the yellow splotch and keeps getting buggier. I may keep the 10 for use around the house, but it won't stay as my daily user.
I think the nexus 9 looks nice, but I'm keeping my 10.
While I do like 4:3 aspect ratio more thatn 16:9, since I do mostly reading on the tablet, I don't see any big improvement on the Nexus 9, so I'm going to keep my N10 for a while.

'Not significant'?? Well i guess it depends in what area. The screen resolution is similar, but the screen cant possibly be anything other than far better. Its got more up to date Wifi, much much faster RAM and more of it, a CPU thats at least 5x faster in raw terms and a GPU thats an order of magnitude faster at least.
And all those specs on the N9 weren't necessary if Lollipop would truly bring an enormous performance update [emoji6]
I think we (the N10) can also forget the "coloring notification bar" like my N5 has with apps which have Material Design (like Gmail: red; Documents: blue; etc), because we didn't have transcluent not bar either with KitKat.
I'm intersted in seeing how well is N10 going to perform with 5.0, but I'm decided on getting the Nexus 9 anyway - I think the 4:3 9" device is a good compromise for using one device at home and outdoors or at university rather than having two separate devices for each task (I currently go to uni with N10 and use N7 at home due to its weight and portability)

So it won't be transparent in lollipop either? That's sad and just seems like a lazy decision. I highly doubt that it lowers performance. Almost every custom rom has it as translucent and I haven't seen any performance drops on there

Yep I saw that just now as well. I can't wait hopefully we can get a factory image soon as tonight or tomorrow. (Its 6:36 right now eastern time) and still like 2:30 mountain time I think so its still resonab!e to expect it to day

I'm still very much sitting on the fence on this one. I use my N10 almost exclusively in portrait mode and find it really heavy and awkward to hold. Plus web browsing (and even PDF editing on large PDF's) on the N10 can still be a sluggish experience. The N9's 4:3 aspect ratio, ~180g weight saving and ultrafast chip would be really helpful in countering my main gripes with the N10.
The initial reviews though don't sound hugely promising - especially about the poor battery life (4-5 hours) and flimsy back cover...
Hm...
Quite a few big reviewers have slated the N9 saying it's simply not worth the price tag.

Most of them have reviewed it before am 800 mb ota came out to fix any issues. They should've waited and Google should've not let them review until the ota was out. Wait for android authority's review they said they're gonna do it after spending a good amount of time with it. Also it's releasing at the same price point as nexus 10 and 20 dollars cheaper than nexus 10 for 32 GB version. So it's not really bad pricing. People just think that because of the nexus 7 being so cheap. Anyways you pretty much get an upgraded processor, upgraded GPU (which is very much needed for nexus 10) boom sound speakers (though the nexus 10 front speakers are pretty decent themselves) more compact device with only 1 inch smaller screen, much lighter and easier to hold. Slight camera upgrade as well. And probably a better screen even though the resolutions are the same. It's not that much of an upgrade over the nexus 10 but it's an update definitely. I myself am sticking with my nexus 10 since for my needs as a media device and some school stuff it's perfectly capable. Maybe I'll upgrade next year but after the nexus 10 I don't think I'll be getting a tablet anymore. More likely I'll get a touch laptop or one of those two in ones.

Well the N10 is both moving much more pixels (1600 x 2560) and the density is higher as well (300 ppi vs 288 ppi).
Hi!
I have currently nexus 7 (2012) tablet and I've been thinking of updating it with 10" tablet. One of the greatest tablets on paper is xperia z2 tablet but there are couple things that make me think about some other device (nexus 9 or some samsung tablets). That is custom software support.. I've been using cm for a long time on my devices and luckly z2 has official cm12 support. My concern is however how stable is the device tree of z2 and recovery support seems to be everything else but good. No TWRP, not even unofficial as far as I can see. Otherwise sony's tablet seems to be hardwarewise device and that's why I'm seriusly thinking of buying one. If someone could recommend/not recommend this tablet to me or give me any other information about the device I'd appreciate it a lot!
Regards,
rockknee
I have both Nexus 7's a Nexus 9 and a tablet Z2.
Paid about the same for N9 and tab Z2, about $400 new.
N9 is heavy and thick compared to Z2 tab, but may have more CPU power. I don't use them much except for app testing and light reading.
I much prefer the Z2 tab to the N9 due to lighter, thinner and FM radio.
Tab Z2 (and Sony in general) development is low.
But N9 is a relatively unpopular Nexus too...
As long as you're aware you're getting last generation cpu/graphics (which BTW snapdragon 801 is still plenty fast), its still a great tablet.
- Thin and light
- Great build
- Snappy
- Relatively clean / close-to-stock software build, the tweaks actually add value/functionality and improve on stock (quick settings toggles, stamina mode, mount windows shares etc.)
- SD card
- No complaints on the screen whatsoever. Sure its 'only' 1080p but I can't see the pixels so I don't care
- Software buttons means its actually usable when rotated in whatever orientation you use. I know some samsung owners who really regret their purchases because they like to use their tablets one way, and samsung has hard buttons the other way
As long as the price reflects the fact it came out a year ago, its still a good choice.
Yeah dev is dead but
- there's nothing wrong with stock at all. I've been flashing since Nexus One and I've had zero inclination to custom this.
- we're definitely getting official lollipop shortly
- BL unlock is officially available if you want CWM/TWRP anyway. (look harder in the dev forums... defo CWM/TWRP available)
so nothing to see here IMO

Thanks for these opinions and experiences guys! I really feel like xperia z2 might be better device for me due to it's larger screen compared to nexus 9 and the ratio is also much better for watching movies and so on. Now that I've been testing the device on couple stores I've noticed that the screen responsiveness is far from best. Could be also just problem on some z2 tablets and caused by people "giving hard time" for these test models at the stores.. Have you noticed touchscreen problems? I mean one device was absolutely ****ed up on one of the stores I visited, even scrolling thru homescreens was very painful and didn't leave very good impression at all.

none on mine, doesn't miss a beat.
There were people here talking re: bad touchscreen when it was first released, but I believe it got ironed out with later firmware / later batches
Running it with CM12 and i love my Z2 Castor Windy.
Z2 is now on the way! I found nice sale from one Finnish store, approximately 394$ price and 32gb model. I think it was a great deal, can't wait to get my hands on it! Thanks guys!
Guys,
I sent the Pixel C back. It died in 2 days. I was looking at the Sony Z4 tab along with the google one. Now I am looking back at it. Is that Sony Z4 tablet still a fantastic tablet? Issues? Just looking for overall comments before I look to find one to buy..I dont see them for sale much right now so I find it might be hard to get one anyway. But thought I would ask before I started looking..
Well I was in the same boat as you. I recently purchased the Nexus 9 lte tablet but wasn't happy with it due to the poor construction and some light bleed issues in the screen so I decided to look for this Z4 in Amazon and got it for $589.00 Free shipping and no Tax. Man best choice I've ever made! Really well build table, super thin, great speakers and water proof. Doesn't have many development support or Roms support but you can root it, install Xposed, debloat it and live with it.....oh and great battery life. Compatible with T-mobile and At&t LTE even it says 4G.
Yes is still a great option almost a year after of his released.

My topic My Z4 Tablet Pros and Cons gives some of my and other's thoughts that are still relevant for the most part.
Also, the tablet flies on Marshmallow. I'm still super happy with my choice.
Does anyone think they might come out with a replacement for it anytime soon?

The problem with android tablets is that they do not sell well. That causes OEMs to only release mid to low end tablets perpetuating the situation. It's a sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Instead of making their tablets better so that they can sell better, they make them worse so they sell even worse than before.
That lets (as a result) old tablets to still be excellent. For example my Note Tablet is the best pen-based tablet to this day (maybe ipad pro 9.7 will change that), portable, unlike the 12inch behemoths and awesome functionality coming out of the pen.
Similarly Xperia Z4 remains even after a year of its release one of the best if not *the* best tablet, period. It's the lightest 10 incher ever created by far, making it the only choice for heavy readers. After MarshMallow some of the best battery lives in the industry, excellent screen and the lack of Roms can be fixed by xposed (which pretty much has *all* the features of custom roms).
Still whilst my wife has one, I won't buy one for myself because I don't want to support Sony's ridiculous DRM-Warranty policy. If that doesn't bother you, I don't think you can go wrong with this tablet, I'm hard pressed to find anything better (maybe ipad pro if you don't mind jailbreaking).
