LOCKED Bootloader, what does this means? - Motorola Photon 4G

Motorola defy is comes with locked bootloader. But defy have so may custom roms(miui,ics,jb4.1,4.2), custom kernels, and even use two or more roms to boot.( one from internel and others from externel sd card). If defy is able to do this with locked bootloader then why photon ?.
These are the words from defy wiki page.
LOCKED Bootloader, what does this means? For some people is hell, for others (normally non advanced users) is a pretty cool insurance for their phone. This locked Bootloader thing means there is no (so far) way to rewrite the Stock Bootloader or the Stock Recovery. When the phone turns on the Bootloader basically starts all the hardware and make your phone come alive. Then we have the Stock Recovery, this little part of your phone is also locked and cannot be removed or changed from your phone, it will allow you to make Recovery stuff like Full Wipe (Data and Cache) and install Update.zip files. At first this became a problem, because with a locked Bootloader there is no way to install a Custom Recovery like ClockworkMod or install a new Rom.Here is where2nd Initcomes to play, this little awesome app kicks inright after the Bootloader and allows the Defy to load a different, non-Stock Android. With this, you can also install a Custom Recovery, which runs from the Internal Memory, and is not ran from the Recovery Partition (remember: locked, not accessible) what does this means? That even screwing up your phone, deleting allyour stuff, or screwing /system partition the phone can still get into Recovery, be recognized by RSD Litein Bootloader Mode and be flashed with a Stock or modified Rom (more on this later) and it will come back tolive normally. Thanks to this locked Bootloader, is really, really hard to Brick your Defy. Most of the issues seen on the Forums are NOT Bricks, just incorrectly flashed SBFs (more on this later). With brick one mean the phone has no access to the Bootloader or can’t initialize its hardware, requiring you to use a JTAG to directly reprogram the phone (which I’m not sure is possible on the Defy).
Custom Recovery
A custom recovery is a special"App"** that comes in a separate partition in your phone. This"App"** allows Android Phones to do recovery tasks, like deleting data, installing recovery Zips and so on; The tasks you are allowed to do withStock Recovery are pretty basic. Here is where Clockwork Mod comes into play.CWM is a Recovery that allows you to not only do basic tasks but also create Nandroid Backups, Restore Them, Fix Permissions and quite a lot of other useful stuff.Normally a Custom Recovery is installed by flashing the Recovery Partition in your Android Phone witha Custom Image, but since our Defy comes with a Locked Bootloader, this is not possible. Leaving us without many options to proceed. And that's why we have 2nd Init, thisapplication is what actually installs CWM in the Defy, it does it by installing it in your internal memory and not in your Recovery Partition and then pointing the Android system to it right after the Stock Recovery boots.**Is not actually an App, is more likea Linux Console with UI so you can recover.

I think if our devs modify the 2ndint apk for photon, then all locked photon users will able to try all roms available here.

One dev is already working on this....Bt not yet successful...
But we hope he'll b successful.... N we can enjoy the test of different ROMS.

It is glad to hear that and hope he will achieve it. Compared with photons hardware my defy is far behind.
I was purchased my photon from ebay few days back (only looking its specifications!!)
After reading through this forum i realised that its not possible now to try jb, ics, or even some cm7 roms in my photon becouse it is 2.3.5..

[Q] First Steps: Starting with an already modded P500

Hello all, this is my first post (feel free to yell N00000b LOL) so I'll try to be right to the point since I just need advice on a couple of things to keep on going on my learning process (with the tutorial threads and guides).
I got my P500 off of the local eBay (I'm on Venezuela), it was a great deal for a unit with a couple of months of use (had original invoice) and the phone is really "like-new". The thing is that the guy who sold it to me is himself a modder (probably he's around here somewhere) so the phone is already rooted and it's running a custom ROM (and it's supposedly overclocked). As far as I can tell (by comparing the description and installed apps) the ROM that's installed is the one on this thread:
Light 2.2.2 ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1018839
My about screen reports the following:
Model number: LG-P500
Android version: 2.2.2
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #36 The Feb 10 23:04:17 2011
Build number: FRG83
Software version: V10h-FEB-23-2011
One thing that I should mention is that he deleted all data and apps that he had installed after flashing the custom ROM (or probably he just reflashed the custom ROM prior to giving me the phone), so there's no app for controlling CPU clock, Terminal, BusyBox, etc (I know I'll have to install those from the Market).
My specific questions are this:
1.- Should I have any special considerations on my learning process (with the tutorials and guides) since I'm not starting with a stock phone as most other users?. I want to get to the point of installing/testing other ROMS (it seems that the one on the phone is not one of the most populars around here)
2.- I've read some horror stories around most forums regarding the infamous "radio.img" file and how you can damage your phone data connection if you mess around with that file, but on the guides around here I don't see much mentions of that file. How can I prevent messing around with it?. Is that file part of the custom ROMs or what?. I should mention that my cell operator here in Venezuela is "Digitel", and they operate on the 900 Mhz band for GSM and 3G UMTS/HSDPA service (the other 2 operators here use 850 Mhz for 3G).
Thanks in advance for your advice
U don't need to be horrified with that radio image coz in our phone Ive never seen any update for that so basically u never need to mess with it.. go ahead and flash a gb rom maybe void.. with Franco's kernel.. and follow the steps provided in the respective threads..
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
I wouldn't be concerned about the lack of default apps. You can get them pretty much everywhere here on the forums. Also, Light is not exactly the greatest rom available for the Optimus. I would highly recommend flashing Mik's CM7, but if you'd rather stick with something closer to stock then use Megatron.
Megatron was my first ROM, I ran it for several months. Then I switched to Void for a while, and then when Void was discontinued I waited til Miks CM7 was out of Alpha status and flashed it. Haven't gone back since.
Thanks for your replies... I was under the impression that the "radio.img" file had something to do with the specific radio frequencies that your operator uses for 3G, so if let's say your operator is 3G-900 Mhz and you flash a "radio.img" for an operator that's 3G-850 Mhz, then your phone will not connect to 3G anymore. My doubt is that I don't know if that infamous file can be accidentally flashed when you're installing new ROMS, or if that file is a different story and flashing ROMs does not mess with that file.
I just don't want to be stupid and start flashing ROMs without the proper precautions to avoid bricking my phone.
Hi guys... I got a response from a guy on another forum who told me that the precaution that I need to take is to always check the content of the .zip file of the ROM that I want to flash (looking inside without unzipping) and just confirm that there is no "radio.img" inside the zip. If the file is not there then I'm good to go. Is that right??
Now I need to move on into installing a Custom Recovery (he sold me the phone already rooted but with no custom recovery installed). AmonRA or ClockWorkMod??
Since you say the phone already runs a custom rom then that means you *may* have custom recovery if the guy hasn't removed it. As for the radio.img, no roms for the p500 mess with it.

clockworkmod ...you can use rom manager (download from market) to install it......and try void# forever
You're definitely right on that mihir287... now that I'm understanding things a bit more it makes sense that the phone should have a Custom Recovery already installed since it's running a custom ROM. How can I test/check this??... just by using the key-combo to boot into recovery mode and see what happens?
In the case that he had removed the custom recovery what would happen if I attempt to boot into recovery mode?
If I want to go ahead and install ROM Manager to install ClockWorkMod... will that just replace any previous custom recovery (if it existed) and give me the new one?
(Sorry if I'm asking too many stupid questions )
There are no stupid questions as this is a unique case
Yes just turn off the phone and press home+vol down+power. Remember to keep this pressed till the phone boots onto recovery, or if there is no recovery the phone will boot normally.
If the guy has removed the recovery (i.e replaced it with stock recovery) then this combo will do a 'hard reset', which I think removes all apps so make sure to take a backup using titanium first.
And yes if you use rom manager and flash the recovery then it will replace any recovery you have. So I would say just use rom manager and flash recovery because if you already have recovery or not this method will flash you CWM recovery. Make sure to reboot once before using rom manager.

[Q] I717 fighting ROM flash.

I have a rooted I717. I have tried to load multiple ROMs through CWM (ICS_CLC5_Alpha, SAUROM_XLA2_RCVII, etc.). However, I get the same message every time I start the flash: E: short write of tmp sideload package.zip (no space left on device). I have used multiple apps to confirm that the phone is rooted and have over 10gb of data available on the SD card.
I have rooted multiple devices, namely my past Captivate, and never had much of a problem. I've never worked with a device that fights me like this before.
Any advice, suggestions, tutorial, etc. would be greatly appreciate.
(I also found an ICS ROM that load through odin here:
http://www.androidlookout.com/install-cyanogenmod-9-galaxy-note/168/
Can anyone with a trained eye verify if this ROM would be stable on the I717)
Thanks.
It does not sound to be like you have ClockworkMod Recovery installed. Are you sure you are not trying to flash under Android System 3e recovery? Can you post a picture of exactly what you are selecting in recovery to flash?
I don't know how trained my eyes are, but I can assure you, if you flash that ROM you linked it will bork your device. That is for the International note (our phones weren't released yet when the article was written).
Yes that's for the international note.

Screenshot didn't come through, but I do believe that is the Android System Recovery version. You can only flash custom stuff through the ClockworkMod recovery here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526431
Use Odin to flash that. Then you will be in a blue recovery that will look like this:
http://dl.xda-developers.com/attach...3fd0/4f7f5e62/9/3/3/4/7/6/20120305_160801.jpg
You can flash your zips from there successfully.
I'll try that tonight. Thanks for the heads-up. The shear number of threads here can be daunting to sort through.
By the way, will I be able to delete unwanted applications after correctly rooting the device without flashing a ROM? (I was able to on past devices. Just curious.)

[Q] Stuck in boot loop

I have been reading a whole bunch of stuff but can't seem to piece together what to do. My atrix is unlocked and rooted. I was flashing a rom and it started to boot loop. I would like to just flash it back to stock now. Confused if I should use fastboot or rsd. Some of the possible fixes I have found have bad links for downloads. I also saw a few things that said flashing back to stock with rsd could brick the phone??
After unlocking the phone I /would not/ recommend using RSD to flash /anything/.
When you unlock your phone, you burn a bit fuse that tells the phone you've unlocked it. There is no way to undo that. Using RSD improperly can cause your phone to hard brick and render it useless.
To avoid possibly breaking your phone from this point I would recommend taking a close look at what ROMs are available in the development section to see which one(s) suit your needs. Listed below are the ones I use on any of my three Motorola Atrix 4G's ( US ATT )
Neutrino ( CyanogenMod 7 Base )
NottachTrix ( Closest Stock Experience IMO and more customizable )
Currently I run NottachTrix because I like webtop, but prior to getting a lapdock for this phone I ran solely on Neutrino EE with 0 issues.
You'll want to take a look at setting up Motorola's USB drivers for ADB / Fastboot usage these are a must.
For either ROM to flash properly, AFAIK, you'll need to use ROMRacers Recovery found here.
These are just my personal favorites, as there are a plethora more ROMs out there in the development section. There may be a stock ROM that I just am not aware of you can flash through recovery, but I wouldn't know off the top of my head.
As far as fixing the boot-loop issue goes I would go into recovery and wipe cache / data / dalvik cache, under advanced in recovery, and then reflash the ROM you're trying to use.
That got me on the right track. Thanks it's fixed.
Awesome! Glad to have helped. =)

[Q] UNLOCK screen stuck -- no solutions

Hello.
I have a Motorola Atrix that is not working and I have no clue about the history of the phone. I have no idea how it was messed up, or what was done to the phone.
Currently I see a screen with the M logo on it and the word unlock in the top left corner. I have seen many other people with this phone have had this same issue. I tried doing the common tip of wiping data and cache but nothing worked.
Can anyone help me out here. I dont care what the phone looks like I simply need it to turn on without a hitch and be able to navigate the menus. I could go completely stock and be thrilled. My only problem is that I am a complete beginner and cant figure out what to do or where to find current files. I have done a lot of searching here and a lot of the links seem to be broken, probably because this is an older phone...
Thanks anyone in advance!
PS: Im trying to fix this to turn into ATT for a credit towards a new phone, anyone who helps me solve the problem gets a free meal!

Try flashing the 4.5.141 (2.3.6) SBF file via RSD for a full stock experience. This makes the phone "forget" that its unlocked (the unlock at the top left disappears). If you want to keep it unlocked, flash a fruitcake via CWM.

Here's the post that gives you 4.5.145 (2.3.6). It returns the phone to stock and unlocked, but gets rid of the recovery. You'll need to dig through your system partition to delete the file that forces the stock recovery to show up before flashing a new recovery.
Warning : This may brick your phone . I am not responsible for damaged devices.
OTA IS ONLY FOR AT&T
Here is the OTA update zip
CAUTION!!!!

I dont prefer to flash ota

Also, here's another way to do it. Either method will work. The method below tells you where the recovery file i mentioned earlier is in the system partition.
I have made a cwm flashable zip for anyone that would like to test the new build. It includes kerrnel, system and webtop. I have tested this on my device and seems to work fine. However i will not be responsable for any bricked devices. flash at your own risk.
i have rooted this build with an older method so su binarys may need to be updated
also you will need to have a way to reflash your recovery there is a recovery-from-boot.p file in /system that will overwrite recovery with a stock one on every boot. it should be a very easy fix just find the file in /system and delete it reflash whatever recovery you like and the problem should be solved (sorry i just didnt have time to fix this)
For non AT&T users if you would like to try this build you can probably use the ramfix or one of faux123's kernnel. I can not tests this so i have no idea if it will work

need help with flashing roms to my phone

Hello Everyone,
Ok so not sure where to start, umm yesterday i decided to root my phone i have the HTC Desire C from Cricket wireless. I was successful at unlocking my bootloader and rooting the device. Now for some reason im unable to flash a custom rom or whatever to my device, not sure if im doing something wrong, but i must have screwed something up because i cant even perform a factory reset or a hard reset to the device at all, and the google play store no longer works and the sync icon never goes away. Now when i attempt to flash the custom rom the clockwork recovery tool wont allow me to do a full wipe which i believe must be completed before you can even install the roms.
any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You.
Just unlocking and rooting the device should not affect how the Play Store works at all. That seems odd. What's the error? By the Clockwork recovery tool, are you referring to the Rom Manager or the actual ClockWorkMod recovery?

Actually you know what, I think i know what happened. when i was trying to flash the rom i also flashed the gapps for jelly bean into my phone which is running ice cream sandwich currently because the rom flashing failed. So basically i think the gapps apps are conflicting with the stock apps on the phone ? It seems like all the google apps are the only ones messing up and the google account sync is messing up also the google playstore and google plus crashes a lot so its only the google apps. so what do you think and how do i restore the phone ? I didnt make a back up recovery either. If someone could also just walk me through how to flash a custom rom like CyanogenMod i believe everything will probably fix its self (hopefully). oh and as for the Clockworkmod i think its the actual clockworkmod recovery the one with a black hat, i accessed it through bootloader recovery options, anyway it doesnt allow me to flash any custom roms ive tried like 3 so far and everytime it ask me for some update file or something about a update not sure.
Yep, the other Google apps is what did it. You don't need to flash Gapps on a stock rom, only for ones like CM that don't come pre-installed. Well, first off, it's good to take note of what system version and baseband version you have, in case you need to find the files for later to reflash. As far as CM, well, you might want to check on how stable a version is for your phone. Often times less popular HTC CDMA phones don't have as good of support from CM. If you just find another stock rom and install it through CWM, you'll probably be fine. Just make sure to wipe everything suggested in the install guide for the rom you pick. Some devs and roms require a full wipe including /system and some do not. ProTip : Do a backup in CWM before ever wiping /system, even your system now which doesn't work right, because if you wipe the system and the rom you downloaded doesn't work, then you will be stuck with nothing to do and at that point would need to find the RUU from HTC to restore the phone back to stock.
FYI: If you unlocked via htcdev.com, this is not a full unlock and whenever you install a custom rom that has a different kernel than what is already on the phone, then you need to extract the boot.img from the rom.zip and install it via fastboot. You should get familiar with fastboot as it is very handy for reviving the phone in a worst case scenario.

Ok Thanks for the reply, now as for the full wipe my CWM wont allow me to do this im only allowed to do a cache wipe and I believe this is why im unable to get a Rom working on my phone and this is getting very frustrating, the CWM is the latest version and TWRT wont even flash to my phone so that one doesnt work at all if you know of any others please let me know. Yesterday morning i soft bricked my phone and none of the roms are working because i believe i must perform a full wipe which i am unable to do at this time. oh and about unlocking my bootloader via htcdev.com and it not being a full unlock, do you suggest that may have something to do with the fact roms wont work on my phone and how do you do a full unlock ? oh and i tried to restore back to stock also thats not working either, I get a status 7 error when installing the roms and sometimes a status 6.

Are you sure you don't have the recovery from another version of the Desire C - GSM maybe? I still don't understand what you mean when you say you can factory reset. Why not? What is the error? And sounds like at this point you should just use the RUU to return to full stock and start over.

Ok not sure what the RUU is and how im suppose to use it to return to full stock, and correct i cant perform a factory reset in bootloader period, when i select factory reset it does nothing but reboot and say HTC "this build is for development purposes only do not distribute outside of htc without written permission. Failure to comply may lead to legal action." then it stays like that and nothing else happens period, not sure what im doing wrong but no worries im going to buy a new phone tomorrow and never use custom roms again, if i want a upgrade ill just go out and buy a new phone which i should have done in the first place, only thing ill be doing is rooting my devices for now on and nothing more thank you for your help.
Well, once you have a custom recovery, you don't factory reset from the bootloader screen, but via the recovery itself. That's one of the main reasons for the recovery - better options to wipe the phone as well as backing up, restoring, and flashing the custom stuff. Not saying you shouldn't buy another phone, but no reason to give up on this one. I just think it would require a bit more reading since you don't see very familiar with what to do with CWM after you installed it. Have you even booted INTO CWM?
