[Q] Issue with NX-Kernel - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been trying to flash NX-Kernel_v1.1.0 to my phone which is running Rootbox-JB-i9300-v3.9.1.
I have noticed that the file I am trying to flash is not a .tar, which is what I am use to, but a .zip.
When i use TWRP to attempt to flash it boots into download mode and does nothing.
I have also tried using odin and mobile odin but i think because its a .zip odin cannot even see it.
The thread is linked below. I have searched it and people seem to be saying that it is possible to flash with a recovery and odin/mobile odin, all of these i have tried.
Can someone please tell me what i am doing wrong!?!?

Why would a kernel made for galaxy note or note 2 work on a galaxy s3?
There are sure to be differences which will make it not boot.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

oops, didn't see that. Of course it won't boot, you're lucky if you didn't kill it

First off, kernels cannot kill phones. Only corrupted or mismatched or blank boot loaders can.

Hate to tell you it can. I bricked an S3 by accidently flashing an S2 kernel to it which bricked the device to the point that a jig would not even revive it.

That makes no sense if you think of the booting process... I mean crazy things happen. But a kernel should never fully brick a device...

It does if the kernel is not for the proper chip set. Like a kernel for a qualcom chip flashed on an eyxnos chip.

the issue has already been found. The kernel is for a different device.

It should only result in a soft brick... Bootloaders are the first to come (primary then secondary. Secondary passing the booting process off to the kernel. Recovery is in the kernel while DL mode is in the boot loaders.) Oh well. I make sure I don't do stuff like that. I'm really OCD and paranoid about stuff being just right.

\Yeah thats what I thought as well. I was just rushing far more then I normally do and downloaded the same rom for both the S2 for my brother and my S3 and flashed the wrong one to mine. Boy was I not happy. Spent 3 days with some of the most talented developers here and we all agreed that jtag was the only hope.

New to i777, please help

Just moved from iPhone to i777, wanted to get ICS, but eneded up bricking my first phone by installing something meant for i9000. At that time I didn’t know Galaxy S2 has variants, just searched for S2 and got burned. My fault…..should have understood better.
I want to do it right this time so I have been reading about i777, ROMs, kernels, CWM.
I want to put SHOStock or CM9 ROM.
I know where these ROMs are and how to flash them using CWM.
But that’s where my confusion starts, that there are just too many sources and options and I don’t know which one is right.
So please advise.
How do I root?
Using this? It has multiple options
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18576627#post18576627
or this ?
http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-att-galaxy-s2-sgh-i777/
Which kernel to use
The one mentioned in SHOStock thread #3 post the Cherry Picker Kernel for i777 or Entorpy? Siayh
How do I get CWM on these, isn’t recovery part of the kernel or do I flash It separately or may be use ROM Manager, once rooted.
Modem? What does it do? Is it for phone or wi-fi and how do I know which one to use.
My phone’s data
SGH-i777
Android 2.3.6
Baseband I777UCKK6
Kernel 2.6.35.7
Build#
GINGERBREAD.UCKK6
Here's what you need to do:
1. Use Odin to flash stock UCKH7 with Root, available here. Be aware that doing this will require a full wipe, so do what you can to back up your sms/mms/contacts and other data. READ EVERY STEP CAREFULLY. Do not flash a kernel with Odin.
2. Now that you have root access, download Mobile Odin from the Play Store. Use it to flash either Entropy's DD or Siyah. This will install CWM Recovery.
3. Boot into CWM Recovery and make a nandroid backup.
4. Use CWM to flash SHOStock or CM9.
First of all thanks for responding.......
Is there a relation between which ROM will work with which Kernel, I may be wrong but I got the impression, depending on which ROM you are putting, you should have a kernel that supports it.
Also it seems like, ShoStock has its own variation of entropy, named cherry picker.
Thanks.......

Sometimes there is, but it seems like most of the ICS kernels are interchangeable. Just try out each kernel for a few days...once you have CWM, switching kernels is no big deal. When switching kernels, though, it's always wise to flash jivy's Kernel Cleaning Script just before flashing a new kernel.
Can you use CWM to flash kernels as well ? I thought they always have to be done using ODIN.
May be I underestimated CWM, I thought it was for ROMs and zips only.

u can use mobile odin or cwm but its just a matter of preference you just had to use mobile odin at first to acquire a cwm enabled kernel but pretty much you can flash everything in cwm as long as its specified to be cwm flashable zip kernels roms and modems and such
edit: the free mobile odin only lets you flash kernels btw its the premium version that lets you do everything without going to recovery
hope to help

You don't seem to have a firm grasp on all this. Maybe you should do some more reading before going further...
Anyway, here's a brief explanation:
A kernel is the underlying core of the operating system; it is how the OS interacts with the hardware.
A rom (the proper term is actually firmware, but nobody uses it) is basically the whole user interface; it's the part of the OS you see. When you flash a rom, you're flashing everything, including a kernel.
Like I said before, you never want to flash a custom kernel using Odin. Doing so will trip the phone's flash counter, and this will show up if you ever have to take the phone in for warranty stuff.
The reason it's ok to use Odin to flash the stock with root package is that it comes with the stock kernel, not a custom one. Basically, once you're rooted, you shouldn't touch Odin again unless its to recover from a brick. Basically everything else can be done in CWM.
Yes I am still reading & trying to get a grip on it.
So first I will root it, then flash kernel using Mobil Odin
Then get in CWM mode ad flash ROM, which will come with the kernel i.e. cherrypicker kernel and modem I need.
Yes one part I have understood very well is that use CWM as much as one can to avoid committing mistakes by flashing something that doesn't belong.
Sorry for asking so many qs., I wish I could understand this faster.....
Thanks again........

You don't need any more of a guide than that. Don't worry about breaking wifi, that isn't a problem on any of the popular roms.
If you want a Samsung based ICS rom that works really well, I suggest ShoStock2. If you want an AOSP based rom, most people suggest AOKP. I haven't tried it personally.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 i-777 does not turn on only blinking black flashes

okay so I read through some of the threads and I still don't know how to fix my issue. I rooted my phone using Odin v 1.85 and used siyah 3.4.2. I did it successfully and everything was good. I then gave the phone to my cousin and he said he performed a factory reset to get rid of everything on the phone ( contacts ,etc). Now when I turn on the phone it shows the samsung galaxy display with the triangle and then the screen goes black and just blinks. It still goes back into download mode I just dont know what to do to fix the problem. I know I'm a noob but please HELP!!!
Development section. You'll find the stickies that show how to flash stock packages with Odin. Go back to stock to fix your issue. You should then be able to load a new kernel and flash a custom rom.
Oh, and never let that cousin touch the phone again.

You will need to root first. If you did not flash the stock plus root package already, flash that, and then install a custom kernel which has ClockworkMod Recovery. Then you can flash any firmware.

Flash a kernel with ClockworkMod Recovery, then boot into recovery and flash the firmware. Mobile Odin can't handle the CWM flashable zip format.
There is a Siyah kernel for gingerbread that would give you CWM so you could then flash a custom rom. It would be in the development section. Just make sure you grab the version for gingerbread and not ics

[Q] Kernel not flashing help

I have flashed paranoidandroid 3.15 on my galaxy s3 a couple weeks ago, aside the occasional screen that win't turn on I haven't had any problem, but I set my mind on flashing a new kernel in order to be able to change thez governor. I tried to flash air kernel on, I did exactly what I was told: Boot into recovery, clear cache/delvik, installed kernel from sd card, and rebooted. But after the phone being rebooted, I still had the stock kernel.
My question is, why did this happen, and how do I fix it?

Well, I don't really know either of them, I don't mind stock, but I want to change things, sometimes it just isn't up for the task, or uses up battery when I would rather it didn't, without even knowing what they do, and looking around, I found the perseus kernel, I would like some opinions on the kernel, I would be very grateful if you told me if it fits me, if it's compatible with ParanoidAndroid, and finally if you have a better suggestion for a kernel.

[Q] Just getting TWRP recovery for the i777

I've been having trouble just finding a twrp recovery image for the i777. I see ones for the skyrocket but I wouldn't imagine them being compatible for this phone. Would I end up having to compile it myself, or is there some resource where I can get it from?

It's really simple.
Recovery on the i777 is NOT in its own separate partition. Recovery on this device is packed with the kernel.

I am not using a rom manager of any kind, and do not know why you would assume that. The CWM Recovery images are available on their website, which are flashable from a custom recovery or through fastboot.

So you flash a recovery with recovery? For what purpose? At the end of the day if you have a borked OS and need in recovery mode you will have to use the recovery thats packed with your kernel because that is the one that responds to the three finger salute.
Oh. And fastboot? The i777 doesn't have fastboot

Or I flash the recovery from fastboot mode. Also usually do this to replace cwm touch, since I don't really like the interface, nor do I trust a kernels own skinned version of a recovery. The idea for getting twrp recovery is because it supports updating an encrypted rom, I believe. I wanted to encrypt my phone but still be able to apply ROM updates.
There is no fastboot mode on the i777

+1 to this! OP you're making this more complicated than it really is
@ThomasBags,
Either you are not understanding the advice you are receiving, or you are trolling. I really can't tell which. What is it about "you can not install a stand alone recovery on the SGH-I777" that you don't understand?

I'm not sure. How am I able to install my own cwm recovery top of any kernel? You seem to be implying what I've been doing for the past 4 months is impossible.

Two possible cases:
1) you do not have a i777
2) you have been replacing the kernel along with the "recovery"

If creepy is questioning at you then you know you must be doing something wrong. You cannot just simply install another recovery. Dunno what else you're trying to accomplish but it's been very clear to you.
What he is doing is a temporary recovery. Not a good idea to try and mix temporary and full recovery. Risks abound lie in what the op is doing. I still want to know how he got fastboot on an i777

Or he is flashing a kernel that has the new recovery in it
