Hi
I've got Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 running as follows:
OS: 4.0.4
Baseband I9100XXLQ6
Kernel 3.0.15-I9100XWLPT-CL941023
Build:IMM76D.XWLPT
The handset is misbehaving in an odd way and I was wondering if you could recommend some troubleshooting steps or let me know how to resolve the problem if you've seen something similar before.
I own the handset for 13 months and so far it was working fine.
I've never root it or install custom firmware on it and all version of the OS were downloaded from the update service on the device.
Problems started with Android 4 update.
The battery efficiency has dropped dramatically down and remain poor until present update.
4.0.4 seems to improved battery life but didn't resolved any of the other issues that started in Android version 4.x.
Handset is loosing it's network connectivity in the middle of web browsing session or the call, even in the areas with excellent network coverage (occasionally without network activity too).
Sometimes device hangs on application or web browser and the only way to start it back is to pull the battery out.
After that device starting up and if the battery was charged to 100% at the time of crash it will drop down to 5-7% after reboot, even if the handset was immediately rebooted after crash. If device had less that 70-80% of the battery at the time of crash the battery level will drop down to 1% and phone won't start without the charger.
Once it's started back I can observer weird battery behaviour. Even without the charger connected to the handset the battery will "charge" itself.
It seems that phone is magically retrieving battery power back to the pre-crash level within 45-60 minutes.
Handset is in good overall condition and although it may sound odd for UK never been exposed to water or very high humidity.
There is no memory card installed, just SIM as the built in memory is OK to me.
Problem happens with handset working on both the battery as well as on USB charger.
Issue seems to be more intense in the applications with high power demand or/and network traffic.
The average battery life time with moderate usage is 11 hours.
At the time of incident handset getting a bit warm on the left hand side of the camera lens (looking from the back) but it's not hot.
As the part of troubleshooting I've formatted USB storage in the device and whipped it to the factory default (from the boot menu).
No luck, problem still happens and it's extremely frustrating as handset doing it even twice a day.
At the moment I've got only 10-15 applications installed (mainly light weight and all from Play Store).
Handset is protected by Kaspersky AV that runs full scan over the night so should be free of viruses.
What should I do next?
Is there any chance to collect logs?
What should be next troubleshooting steps?
Do you think that it's the hardware or software issue?
Any help would be much appreciated.
First thing lol weather in uk ent that bad. Yeah I just lied it is. Second dont wipe anything on 4.0.4 as you may set of the brick bug. Thrid install 4.1.2 through odin. See if that helps

All ur problems suggest 2 possible causes:
1. Buggy firmware
2. Old battery
As for the firmware, again 2 options:
1. Either upgrade it to JB 4.1.2, or re-flash ICS. You can also try 4.0.3.
2. Factory reset and wiping cache partition (NOT RECOMMENDED on 4.0.4 stock kernel)
Regards battery:
1. Try to calibrate battery manually
2. Check if battery is swollen. If yes, buy a new battery.
As for how these are done, use search.
And get rid of that antivirus!

Thank you guys.
So it seems that 4.0.4 is a piece of |&*\$.
Is here any particular version of ODIN that needs to be used with my model?
I would also appreciate if you could send me the link for stock 4.1.2 if you can.
If there is anything else required for the 4.1.2 like the radio driver or something?
The battery seems fine to me. It's not swollen and if the phone isn't crashing seems to be OK for nearly all day.
However I was considering to put the bigger battery to the handset anyway so I may try that latter too.

4.0.4 is risky only on handsets with insane chip.
Use Odin v3. If it doesn't work, use v1.
U can download the software for ur region from sammobile.com, or from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23562820
The firmware includes the radio (modem) also.
Seems ur battery is not to be blamed then.
If you do decide to flash, read this:

Thank you Mate!
I appreciate your help.
I'll post an update as soon as I'll install new firmware.
@ Sewrizer
What would be the benefit of having it rooted in this particular instance?
All of the above plus being able to freeze or uninstall some of the bloatware that Samsung and your carrier put on your phone before you even got it out of the box....and for info....you don't necessarily have to use a PC and Odin to root your phone.....search for PhilZ kernel for more info......

Thanks guys.
It sounds very interesting.
I would appreciate if you could drop me a link to relevant rooting guide on the forum if there is any.
I think that I'll go for it as the benefits are obvious.
Regarding network problem I've just noticed that phone is reporting missing SIM card when I'm trying to manually refresh the mobile networks.
Do you thin that the other symptoms could also be related to faulty SIM card?
Just reviewed your OP, and you seem to be having issues in two main areas....battery and network.
The age of the handset could indicate a failing battery....they don't last forever.....
The network issues could very well be caused by a faulty sim card....unless you are seeing these issues while using wi fi too.
Mobile networks are constantly evolving too, so it's also possible that your sim card *may* be simply becoming slowly incompatible with the network....the same thing happened to me in the time before I got my first smartphone. .....

Hi,
I have a Galaxy S2 on TMobile in the UK. Not rooted, just been upgraded to ICS with the official firmware through Kies.
Ever since then I've been randomly getting a black screen - i.e. phone doesn't respond to any of the buttons to turn the screen on. Only way to get the phone to work again is a battery pull. Haven't installed any apps from prior to ICS, and prior to ICS I didn't have this problem.
As well as getting a black unresponsive screen it seems to get really warm. Not the normal been playing a game warm, but bordering on really hot. When I do the battery pull and restart there's also been a big battery drain - have lost half the battery before and the phone warning is on screen saying it's about to run out of battery when it was 60% charged before.
I'm guessing no one's going to have a simple answer to this (although it would be great if anyone does, but I've searched and haven't found anything) - but any tips on trying to identify what the cause is? Could it be a bad app maybe?
I tried logcat but didn't really understand it (!) and I wasn't sure if it would record what happened before a battery pull anyway. What's a way of recording what's going on that will stay recorded after a battery pull?
Any tips to help get the bottom of this would be much appreciated
Many thanks
Andrew
First backup data and factory reset .
Still a problem reinstall the firmware.
Checkfus will let you download it and flash via Odin .
Or take it to a service centre is the other choice .

I am having exactly the same problem. This has started just after upgrading to ICS. (I have an unlocked S2 CSC:XEU). Never had this problem before. I tried hard reset but the problem is still there.
I have upgraded using Kies.
I have the same problem on unlocked S2 CSC:XEU. not rooted...
reset didn't work. full wipe - the same problem

hi, i have the following problems after updating to official ICS,
wifi sometimes gets stuck between on/off
sometimes phone goes to sleep and does not respond
wake up is slower than in GB
after numerous hard resets and re-flashing ICS with odin these issues persist.
I recommend re-flashing the official GB version and wait till samsung sort their crap out.
all these issues are kernel related. the wifi issue is reported to be a faulty stock kernel and the black unresponsive screen also is a kernel issue I faced with some beta kernels.
my tip, before you hesitate to go back to GB, give one of the custom kernels a try. Siyah, Speedmod, ... just for the moment don't tweak anything and make sure you really flash an ICS kernel (!!). Just flash one of these kernels and give it a try, you don't even have to do it with odin and thus increase the counter, but you can use that variant. When you are in CWM, instead of flashing the SU zip file, flash the custom kernel zip which will root your phone, too.
Now give the custom kernel a try and see if your issues are gone.
If you don't like it, just flash the stock kernel with odin and uninstall SU and Busybox, and you are back to stock ICS.
I had the same problem. Kernel. Flash the latest siyah kernel and sleep of death will dissapear

I'm getting the exact same issue running Siyah 3.3.2 and CM9. Also happened with stock ICS.
First few times it happened the phone was in my pocket and I felt it get warm. Only way to recover it was to hold power button in for about 10 seconds and it then reboots. I thought the screen was unlocking in my pocket and it was switching off due to overheating... but
Happened again today whilst I was using the phone. Screen went black and phone started getting hotter and hotter. I now think something is causing some kind of loop that causing the lockup / heat up and the phone is actually still on until I press and hold the power button.
I'm currently trying a "record" with CatLog but I can reproduce the problem easily apart from it happening 4 times in the 4 weeks I've had the phone.
(Its a I9100P if that makes any difference)
I have two galaxy s2s. one is i9100 and the other one is i777 on at&t.
SoD happened once on each phone. The i777 was running stock gingerbread and the i9100 was running resurrection remix 1.9.1 with the siyan kernal I believe.
The screen just wouldn't turn on so I just pulled the battery out (is it safe for the phone?)
This doesn't happen often, well just once each on each phone as stated before, but it does bug me as it makes me think there's something wrong with my phones, and pulling the battery out doesn't seem like it's good for the phone.
I searched around the forum a bit and saw other people are having this issue as well. And not just the galaxy s2, but other phones too.
only sleep of death in almost 10 months of use is when i tried xwlp9.
so no its not common
It's fairly common yes, a lot of people running non-stock ROMs get this. I had this ~25 times on numerous Resurrection Remix ROMs, but since v1.9 I haven't had this issue fortunately. If it's causing you a big problem, try fixing permissions from CWM recovery, that seemed to make a big difference when I was having the problem.
SOD usually occurs when the kernel UV the CPU or GPU a little to much. Not every device is the same and not handle same kernels, UV values etc

From the sound of it, it seems to be a software problem.
I got it on the i777 which wasn't running a custom rom. But I think it could be caused by that battery management app that I installed.
anyway, my main concern is that if there's anything wrong physically with the hardware. ( having the SoD caused by software problem is much easier to swallow as to it being caused by hardware problem, as I can just reflash the kernal, roms, factory reset, etc. )
and did removing the battery while in SoD mode damage the phone?
It's normally a firmware issue, or a conflict between an app & the firmware. You'd find it's pretty rare for an 'untouched' (I.E not modded) phone running stock firmware to have SOD's. And obviously if you're flashing custom firmware that's constantly evolving/changing, then sometimes you're going to get SOD's, tho with most well crafted firmware these are fairly rare.
I reckon I've probably had <10 in the 8 mths I've had my phone & I've been running non-stock firmware the whole time save for the week I got my phone, which is nothing when stacked up against all the mucking around I've with my phone.
Edit to add - One way you can test to see if SOD's you're having are possibly hardware related is to do a completely clean install of stock firmware & see if they still happen. If they don't, then it's obviously whatever firmware you were running. If they do, then it might be hardware-related. Re: your question about pulling the battery after a SOD, normally this shouldn't cause you any problems (it's sometimes the only way you can successfully reboot the phone).
The only known SOD issues on I9100 are the old 2.3.3 (don't remember which one) and the XWLP9 kernel.
Custom roms... well. No need to elaborate I guess.
Most of them have undervolted settings as default.

Im pretty sure i rooted my phone on the we with LP9 kernel. Since Sunday, I've had about 10 sods and never had one before... no doubt here as to what's causing it. I plan to change the kernel on the we and hopefully no more sod.

Since it's kinda hard to recreate the SOD. I'll reflash the rom and kernal and do a wipe and see if the SOD still happen

Victorator, forgive my ignorance, but are you saying i should just flash the latest build, XWLPD, onto my fone rather than re-rooting it using a different kernel (i.e. CF-Root-SGS2_DX_SIN_LP9-v5.4-CWM5.zip) in order to stop the SOD?
Never faced such issues ever.
Sleep of death
Hi all, the SLEEP OF DEATH on android phones has even become worse; somebody said this issue is resolved in ICS 4.0.3; thats not true. As of now; i have a galaxy S2 i900, 1 month and 2 weeks old, running ICS 4.0.4 and I have been experiencing this problem lately and took back my phone for repairs last week, got back the phone yesterday and this morning the sleep of death happened 3 times in 1 hour. I took the phone for repairs again later this evening and i made it clear to them that problem still hangs around and i told them that if it comes back with the same problem, they got to give me a new one because it happens on some devices only and im dead serious because SAMSUNG knows about this issue very well and they do nothing. NOW CHECK THIS OUT: the new SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 features this disease too; i was in the queue with two S3 clients reporting this problem. Android is really bad at times; im moving to APPLE

Hi,
I'm also trying to solve this problem, since weeks.
My observations:
SOD happens most on higher battery status (e.g. more SOD's at 80% battery then at 20%
The Phone gets hot after SOD and also before the SOD comes.
While loading the Phone SOD's happen more often
The battery status drains rapidly while SOD (cause of the resulting heat)
My SOD's are independent of kernel, rom, firmware or what ever.
I think it's a hardware problem, but I've no warranty and what to solve the problem without changing the mainboard. It couldn't be a really defective of an important part, cause the phone works apart of this SOD-problem.
Maybe we could find out together howto solve these anoying sod's
Hey. Im trying to solve the SOD problem myself cause its been happening every day and its really annyoing since the phone isnt even a month old.
I got the newest cyanogen mod running.
The phones model is GT-i9100
Android is 4,2,1
I still have warranty on it, do you think I should go back to stock, go exchange my phone where I got it and see if the new one has SOD too or should I just try fixing it first.
Also apps I use constantly : go launcher and dragonvale
I have a 8 gb micro SD inside as well, dunno if that could cause this.
Hi,
I got the OTA update to 4.0.4 a few days ago on my SGS2 (network O2).
Coincidentally I've been running with various launchers (Nova, Mii, ADW etc) but I decided to go back to TW. So I deinstalled them all at around the same time.
Anyway, since the update my phone has been playing up constantly. I've had random reboots whilst the phone has been in my pocket. I've had plenty of short and long freezes. The stock browser locks up quite regularly if I have many tabs open (or any one of them has many images). It also reports inability to connect to the proxy server (though I haven't got a proxy set up).
And to top it all off, my battery life seems to have gone back to being terrible (if I use the phone as a web browser for an hour or so can see 50% of the battery life go!) The battery usage indicates the screen and the internet are taking 75% and the OS only 6%, which is different from what I've seen before. The phone runs very hot sometimes - the screen can get too hot to hold my finger on.
So is this something anybody is seeing, or has my phone just freaked out? Is it worth a factory reset? Is it possible to force the 4.0.4 update to be re-applied? Anything else I can try?
Cheers,
Ross
I have observed the same after moving to 4.0.4. Especially stock browser likes crashing. Anyway, all crashes happen much often for me on ics than on gb.
When I've tried LPT I've noticed extrem battery consumption while using but no crashes.
My wifes phone had similar stuff Ross so we sent it back to Samsung. Was very hot around camera and was freezing a lot,and wireless hardly connected.
When it comes back Um sticking on GB like mines..

Thanks very much for all the replies :good:, it sounds like an Odin downgrade and then upgrade is the way to go, I'll try that tonight. And if that doesn't work I'll try using an older modem.
And if that fails, I'll go complain to O2.
Factory reset should solve that! I had similar problems after upgrade from GB to ICS, after FR all was right.

Never recommend factory reset to someone running stock 4.0.4 ROM on stock kernel
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII
An update, in case anyone stumbles on this thread...
I chickened out of doing the Odin flash, as I googled for a 'how to' and saw it'd invalidate my warranty.
I'm aware there's a way to decrement the flash counter, but I'm a noob at this. I'll stay 'chicken' for moment.
So I did the easy thing... I ran my battery absolutely flat, then recharged the phone to 100%. It certainly seems better - maybe the battery state wasn't being detected properly and caused some issues?
Certainly I've stopped getting the overheating / rebooting / freezing / catastrophic battery life.
I'd be inclined to leave it as-is, but my battery life is still pretty poor compared to how it was... if I browse the internet for a short while (over wifi) I can see big chunks of my battery percentage disappearing.
So I'll go to the O2 store that's nearby, and see if the 'guru' can help me - either by okaying an Odin re-flash, or by sprinkling pixie dust on it or some such
I had another lock up and self-reboot, so I decided to take the plunge and re-flash it, which was relatively simple.
Fingers crossed it does the trick! But if it doesn't, well I can go back to 4.0.3 now.
When I got my SGS3, I could have it on for about 2 days (with minimal use and bluetooth and gps off and such), but ever since I updated to 4.1.2 (from ICS to JB), it looks like the battery drains a lot faster. So I got Titanium Backup and removed most of Samsung's' bloatware, disabled Google now and finally got BetterBatteryStats to pinpoint the source. I found some minor things and disabled them too... I've optimized all settings across the board, yet I still can't get much longer than one day.
Now I get that one day is nice, and most people charge every day, but when you're used to having 2 days (or at least 1.5 on normal use), 1 day is just.. less
So, I am kind of hoping that someone with more knowledge than me (basically everyone here ) would have a look at my BBS dump file, because I'm kind of at a loss.
It would be much appreciated!

Do you mean "Location determined by wi-fi and/or mobile networks"? Isn't that used (among other things) to find the GPS sattelites way faster (because if it knows where you are, it knows where the sattelites are)? Because I use my phone for car navigation, I really would prefer not to wait 5 minutes while my phone searches the sky for GPS...
I'll turn the option off for now, but do you really think that's the main problem? Because I had the option on before this update.
Still, thank you for your suggestion
Location by wifi is unrelated to GPS location, it's just a way of roughly fixing your location by the networks and wifi around you.
It's a battery hog and doesn't matter AGPS, which is used to speed up GPS fixes but gets downloaded via your data connection.
I found JB to be better for battery life that ICS, even on a stock ROM. Since changing to a minimumcustom ROM based on the latest stock I get two days use with around 6hr screen on time.
If you are still on stock that was updated from ICS then you might be better off wiping the phone and flashing a fresh install, even if you only use the stock JB ROM for your country, as things might have become corrupted over time.

I think your issue is fast dormancy as you have the secril_fd wakelock.
There is an app on playstore that can toggle fast dormancy on or off on the Galaxy S3.

Ok, I've installed it and turned FD off... I'll do a full charge now and see how long that keeps. Thanks for your suggestion! Is FD a new feature since JB? Because I haven't changed providers so if this has always been the case, it's probably still a seperate problem.
To be completely sure, I'd still like to do the complete reinstall, so I would really appreciate it if someone would point me in the direction of official updated stock roms. Thanks!

You can reset it completely through Kies if you go to Tools>Firmware Upgrade and Installation and follow the instructions this will flash the latest firmware and reset your phone, do any backups you need first like contacts etc, then root the phone again or do whatever you want afterwards.
FD is not new. It just depends whether you provider supports it or not. If it is not supported and switched on it can cause battery drain.
Saying that my network does support it but when I first upgraded to XELLA I started getting the secril_fd wakelock. Switching off FD solved it at the time. Since then I have made a few changes, including modem and have switched it back on again without issue.
I noticed you've also got the Multipdp wakelock. A modem change sorted that one for me.
As I say I've since moved back to XELLA without issue and neither wakelock has returned.

I've found all the JB ROMs that I've tried to consume alot more battery than ICS, with the same set of apps running and the same location/sync settings. I eventually reverted to CheckROM 3.5 (ICS) to get decent battery life again.

Ok, thanks for the info. I don't think that's my problem though: my provider hasn't changed, the only thing that changed is that I upgraded to JB. Either way, I tested it: with FD off I still have pretty much the same result (maybe a bit better, but I need to properly test that. Yet it's definitely not the problem ). Too bad, it was a good suggestion.

Thank you! I just did this. I expected that all my settings would be gone, but apparently that's not the case. All my apps remain, so I wonder if this wiped it properly? I did lose root though. Well, I'll charge it to 100% and we'll see what happens from there. Thanks!
Perhaps rolling back to your previous modem would help.

overnight it lost 25% in 11h42m, so I'd say that's a definite improvement. It didn't see any use in this time, but it should last me at least 1.5 day now, so I guess the problem was in the update after all. The battery of my (6 months newer) SGS3 still holds out longer, but I think that's the battery itself: hers also charges faster than mine.
Thank you all, for helping to think up solutions and get it working for me again! :victory:
Edit: Multipdp is now a lot higer up in the list (it's the top partial wakelock), maybe I should change modems. Can someone tell me how?
You can download a flashable zip from here.

just flash it from recovery.
XDLID is a good one to start with.

Hey
I have been flashing ROMs over the past year. Not sure if its related but I eventually managed to almost blow up my battery (excessive bulging), and my phone started experiencing massive heat issues. (Though I think its predominantly due to bad charging habits)
Got a new battery but the phone still heats up with basic phone usage (browser,BBC app ) around the camera, though not as much as before and eventually the SIM card stops being detected.
The problem with the heating and sim card detection came first during MIUI Rom. Since then I have tried revolution and carbon ROMs and still the phone heats up and sim card stops being detected. I eventually need to restart the phone and wait for it to cool down before the SIM is recognised. (The IMEI is intact)
Sorry I dont have actual temperature ranges but even basic usage causes this. I can barely get through a call before the call drops due to the same issue.
Can you help me in understanding if this is a software issue - incorrect baseband?kernel?ROM issue?
Or if I have done permanent damage to my hardware when the battery bulged and the phone overheated?
I have a i9100 bought in India currently being used in UK on Revolution ROM XWLSW V4.0.
Thanks
My wifes phone(the one i now use) was the same using 4.0.4,so now i use 2.3.5 with speedmod and i never get any problems.
For me,it must be the hardware that doesnt like certain roms.
Have you tried Neat ROM lite?

Thanks for your replies.
I haven't tried Neat. The issue first came in MIUI. I am inclined to think that had to something with this issue. I recently tried 4.3 based Carbon but absolutely the same issue. That made me think it's the hardware or something wrong with the sim tray.
Just keep trying different roms til your phone likes one of them.Different roms have different effects on each phone.
Just decide whats more important for you.
Yeah try NeatROM lite, as it's close to stock it might help you
