[Q] phone stuck after factory reset - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

my phone froze after factory reset at the "samsung galaxy sII gt-i9100" screen. it has 4.1.2 update via kiess and is rooted. i tried a factory reset and selected usb formatting as well. it restarted and the screen was frozen at that screen for 15 mins till i removed the battery and restarted. still frozen at the same screen. will not start. i can enter the download menu or what it is called (volume down home and power) but i can't enter the other menu (the one with volume up home and power) it freezes at the same screen.
can anyone please help me step by step to reinstall using odin if possible my original version (it was 4.1.2 romanian from orange) or the 4.2.2 (one that you guys know to work on s2)
i would like to try to install the 4.2.2 version to see how it works, but just for warranty purposes i would like to download the original version too (if anyone knows where i can find it)
it's my first rom install so if you can make the explanation as step-by-step as possible i would appreciate it. meaning were to download the files i need for this. i don't know if i am allowed to ask for that on the forum but like i said this is the first time i'm trying to do this.

Rooted phones sometime have this issue while updating via Kies.
Try flashing Siyah v6 beta 5 kernel via Odin. You get it from www.gokhanmoral.com.
Stock firmwares can be downloaded from sammobile.com.

it did not crash wile i was updating. that worked perfectly. it crashed a few days later wen i tried a factory reset. i will try to flash the original version and see if it works. although i would have liked to try the 4.2.2 just to see how it works.
thanks for the address for stock version.

As of now 4.2.2 is not available officially. You get custom roms based on AOSP. So many Samsung apps and features will be missing in them. You do get the stock vanilla feel of pure Android though.
Let know what happens!

were can i find a custom 4.2.2 that i can flash with odin? i found one but i was weird. it had an img file and lots of folders, not the files supported by odin.

Most custom roms are flashed via custom recovery (you have to be rooted for that). You can install CyanogenMod 9 Resurrection version via Odin.
You can find many 4.2.2 roms in the development section.

a reset didn't solve it. i cleared the cashe and flashed the rom again and it worked.
now i have another problem. the phone is locked in orange and i need it unlocked. i had it unlocked before with galaxim unlock and it worked.
now it doesn't. it says it is unlocked but it's not. i had this problem before because i didn't have busybox. now i installed it and su and it still won't work. i tried to relock the phone with galaxsim unlock but it won't. i was able to relock before. any idea why, or how to solve the problem?

A cousin of mine had the same problem. I believe its a software issue, probably kernel related. Try flashing another kernel, or do a cache wipe. If all else fails, try factory reset.

Ok.. try these steps:
1. Turn on Flight Mode, wait a minute, then turn it off. And try switching WiFi on.
2. Forget all connections u have got on WiFi, and connect them again.
3. Reboot ur phone and try again.
4. Try wiping cache and dalvik cache, then Fix Permissions in CWM recovery.
5. Flash another Siyah kernel, or try dorimanx kernel.
Hope this helps...

Where can I DL a rom for s2?
I had this problem on a S2 I bought as a spare/for spares from ebay.
I opened it up and found the button battery (3 years old now) had leaked on the PCS and it's right by the wifi, lots of people have had this problem, google will reveal, some leaked to bad it was too late to save.
In my case I was able to clean up the PCB and all worked fine, I also removed the battery with thin nosed pliers and a twist.
I did not want this to happen to my main S2 and removed the battery from that too, it does not really serve a purpose as the phone gets the time and date as soon as it connects to the network anyhow.
May or may not be your problem but it's a possibility.

Never go back to ICS (especially if you have brickbug affected chip). You can downgrade to jelly bean or gingerbread(I don't recommend this).

[SOLVED]Unrooting

I need to unroot cause I need to send my phone into warranty cause of some horizontal line screen issue
I have downloaded official 4.1.2 firmware from official samsung website , I am currently running CM 9.1 ( 4.0.4) ,as I read from the forums If I flash the official firmware my phone will be unrooted right?
Also from what I read from the forums I only need to flash the tar file right? I don't need anything to do with the SS_DL.dll ?
Also if you could give me some warnings so I don't brick my phone or anything like that would be really helpful
PS:I would install it by Kies but it does not recognize my phone ,I still have it installed(kies)

Do not uninstall Kies, as it uninstalls the drivers required for Odin to work. However, u must exit any instance of Kies running in the Windows Task Manager.
Flashing official firmware will unroot your phone. But if your binary counter has been tripped, u will need to reset it. You will also have to remove the yellow triangle on booting, if any.
Yes, just flash the .tar.md5 file in the PDA box.
For more info on flashing via Odin, see this guide.
Here is a warning about the eMMC Brickbug on 4.0.4.
Don't forget to backup your EFS folder.

For avoiding emmc brick bug i used siyah kernel, look it up or just google for emmc brick bug free kernels
Three more questions
1.How do I know if I need my binary counter to be reset?
2.Do I remove triange now or after I flash the official ROM? (my logic is now)
3.Any information if the 4.1.2 has the hardbrick bug?

1. Go to Download mode and see for yourself
2. Flashing the stock firmware automatically removes yellow triangle. But to remove it manually, you can use Triangle Away app (which requires root), or purchase a USB Jig.
3. No brickbug issues known with 4.1.2.

So If there's no brickbug with the JB ,that means I should do the standard things before installing a new rom ( delete cache ,data, delvik cache ) ,cause I tried to install the official ROM and have not done neither of those things and I was stuck in a bootloop ,I now rerooted it and installed CM10

Yup, no risk with JB. Or with custom 4.0.4 roms having safe kernels.
Bootloops are common after flashinga different OS version. A factory reset would sort it out.

[Q] Is my phone bricked?

I was running AOKP m1 on my GT-i9100 (rooted with CWM Recovery).
Phone ran out of juice last night now won't boot, and recovery seems corrupted (won't boot into that now).
When I go into ODIN MODE the phone appears in ODIN ok, but fails to upload anything.
Do I need to get a USB jig to resolve this?

I suggest you first plug it in for an hour and then try booting into recovery.
If that doesn't help, take out the battery for two minutes and try again.
If u can get into recovery after this, do a full wipe (cache, dalvik and data) and reboot.
USB Jig just puts ur phone in Download mode mate. Since u already can get into that mode, just flashing via Odin will do.

Stuff to try when Odin flash fails:
*Must run Odin as administrator in Windows.
*Ensure Kies & it's processes aren't running in Windows task manager. Kill them if they are.
*Try different USB ports; you must be using a 'powered' or mainboard port.
*Try different USB cables (particularly the cable that came with the phone if you're not using it now)
*Try different versions of Odin (search on here/Google)
*Uninstall Kies, reboot, redownload & reinstall it, reboot, try the flash again.
*Run Windows Update.
And if all this fails, try a different PC. If it won't work first time on the other PC, go thru the above steps with that PC.

As for solving, simply flash a stock firmware using Odin.
But first why not try taking out the battery for a few minutes, reinsert and try to enter recovery again?

Yes, but the main problem with Kies is it's unpredictable. Sometimes, u don't get updates, sometimes it won't connect and (like in my case) it can mess up ur phone too!
Here is an interesting thread:

Odin is Samsung software. Kies is also Samsung software. Kies is a piece of s#!t.
Odin works just fine for most people almost all of the time if you make sure you know what you're doing before you use it - make sure you're using a PC with reliable USB ports, make sure whatever it is you're about to flash isn't corrupted, only flash stuff for your model phone. If you're careful/use common sense, Odin works fine. 99.9999% of problems with Odin are caused by something the user has/hasn't done, I've only ever seen <10 people who bricked their phone using Odin who were 'unlucky' in the 18 mths I've been here (out of many thousands).
