[Q] Install ICS on GT-P7500 (3G) XXKG7 - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello *,
I need to install ICS or anything newer on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 3G P7500XXKG7. Stock roms stopped at Honeycomb.
I know there are lots of howtos out there, but I've read lots of them and I'm still stuck with Honeycomb.
I've successfully rooted the tab. I've installed Rom Manager (not sure if it is absolutely necessary, but those guides seem to lead you in that direction). I can "adb moo" all day long and all the rest.
My problem is that Rom Manager does not recognize my tab model and so does not install a recovery itself. I've downloaded what I suppose to be a recovery compatible with my device from droidbasement.com, untarred the recovery.tar.md5 file, obtained a recovery.img file, adb-pushed it in
/mnt/sdcard/clockworkmod/download/download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-6.0.3.1-p4wifi.img
so that Rom Manager may think that's the p4wifi file it downloaded itself and it may use that... except it doesn't.
The question is: how do I manually install the recovery in Rom Manager without using windows crapware? I "only" have linux (heck, shouldn't be windows users to complain they "only" have windows? Android is linux based after all...), I can copy files wherever it's needed, I only miss one information: where should I copy recovery.img file in order to make Rom Manager recognize and boot into it?
Thanks in advance
Lucio.

First, currently there are stock ics 4.0.4 roms. You can download them from sammobile.com and flash it via odin. Second, you have the 3g version, so you should be downloading p4, p4wifi is for the wifi only version. Lastly, you don't need to untar the file. Just flash it via odin or mobile odin. Though i recommend using odin since mobile odin fcked up my tab before.

Thanks for the news. Can you please provide a link to my firmware at sammobile? I've searched for it but I couldn't find it.

You see, Odin does not work without windows... however that shouldn't be a real problem, seems that heimdall is a good alternative.

I know, but I was trying to trick Rom Manager (which apparently does not support p4) by overwriting its p4wifi recovery file with the p4 one (it does support p3, but I don't feel like trying random bits).

Just go to sammobile.com, click firmwares, key in all your details and enter. Keep in mind that u have to be logged in to download.

Already tried that. The problem is that XXKG7 does not show up in the results and I don't know if I can safely use the rom for a different model.
I can't post links, but if you wanna try, just select Tablet/Android/GT-P7500 - Galaxy Tab 10.1/any Italy option (though mine is from H3G).
Is there a way to search by "XXKG7" on sammobile? Tried the search box but it finds nothing.

I believe the XXKG7 is 3.2. The model number is different in ics. Besides, you can also use other countries rom. The only difference is the language. So if the rom has italian language, then you can use that also. On a side note, i wouldn't recommend using your countries rom because of the deep sleep problems. Head down to the development forum, there is a stock ics rom from czech republic which fixes the deep sleep problem. I'll try to find a link for u. Give me a moment.
Edit: here it is. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219964
download the rom from that thread and flash it.

Thanks for looking it up for me. I've downloaded the file (7z format), unzipped and obtained a .tar.md5 file. I abandoned heimdall, it seems it does not support my device, and borrowd a windows notebook from a friend so that I can use Odin.
Odin recognizes my p4 when connected in recovery mode (but not in download mode, e.g. when "Download" is flashing). Anyway I assume this is ok.
Now the problem is: Odin shows 5 file choosers, namely PIT, BOOTLOADER, PDA, PHONE and CSC. Which is the correct one? Where should I put the file I downloaded?

Thanks. Unfortunately it does not work. Here is the output from Odin:

<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..

Now I suspect that the fact my device is being recognized only in recovery mode is not ok at all... even then, I do not know what to do next...

There is another way. Toldo has made a flashable zip of that ROM in his stock ics rooted, deodexed, and zipaligned thread. Here's the link. q.gs/4BYrw. Flash it from any custom recovery. Make sure to make a full wipe just in case to avoid any problems.

Sorry to ask probably trivial questions, but how do I install a custom recovery given that Rom Manager does not support my p4 (any p4), but it only p4wifi?

ROM manager isn't the only way to flash recoveries. Use Odin or mobile Odin to flash. (In Odin hit PDA also.) Or if you know how to use adb or terminal(which I don't think you know given this question), rename recovery file to recovery.img
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p2

What I do not know (what I didn't know until your last post) is the place where I should put the recovery.img file. Now the dd command you posted shows the correct place is the mmcblk0p2 partition, which is basically what I was asking for in my first post. So, before calling my words into question, please take the time to read what I'm asking for:

Ok, maybe Rom Manager is not exactly required to boot into the custom recovery, but the question seems very clear to me anyway.
Whatever, it doesn't really matter, you helped me a lot after all, it's only a bit troublesome writing lots of details in the questions only to find out that people do not bother reading them...
Now that I know the correct place, the next question arises: how do you know that's the correct place? I mean, fstab says nothing about it. Where the fact that "power+volume down" boots mmcblk0p2 and not something else is written? Or is there a magic dictionary of tablet models and corresponding recovery partitions out there?

Yes I know, already downloaded that, it's where my 1st post recovery.img file came from...

If you know how to use adb, just do the commands I posted. I copied them from kasper_h's infamous AOKP thread, so I don't think there will be anything wrong.
I'm sorry I didn't read your first post thoroughly. Its been awhile that I last read your first post that I forgotten what you wrote..
If you want to know more about mmcblk0p2 stuff, I suggest you ask the experts in this forum since I don't know sh*t about this stuff.

[Q] Bit off more than I could chew..

Ok, I am currently using the Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate from Telus. I did some research and i figured I might as well root it. I did that successfully and that's where i should've stopped. I thought I was able to download the mod CyanogenMod but that was a failure. I have no idea what any of the technical terms mean (modem, kernal, how to open random files ie .tar, .rar .md5, flashing, etc). I tried to follow the Guide on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=923712. I got to step 5, and tried to download the .exe file but then installation failed. I am able to get into download mode and recovery mode but my phone won't reboot past that. Did I just break it..? Any help is appreciated but small simple steps are also appreciated
i'm looking to do the same thing but i'm not sure if i should be flashing the initial ROM (or where to find it) or a nightly
i'm no expert for sure but it sounds like you aren't totally screwed if you can get to recovery or download...not sure if you can just try reflashing the ROM (.zip)again from recovery in order to fix the problem (don't see in the guide where to use a .exe) but you can at least recover to stock using odin...just use step 2 in that guide...again no expert but this is what i have sorted out reading around here trying to figure out how i want to proceed
I have tried many things and yes sorry, the CM I used was in a .zip file, not .exe, my fault. I have attemped to go back to stock mod using that step 2 and those files provided but everytime odin fails. It's looking bad.

You should at least be able to go back to STOCK ROM by following Step 2.
If you are failing in ODIN, make sure the files were downloaded correctly. Using 7zip, try to view the files to verify they are OK. Also, be sure to place each file in the correct section.
Good luck!
Unfortunately, it still fails. 7zip says everything is fine but there is one thing i noticed, the file I'm supposed to place into the "phone" slot is under a WinRar file whereas the rest are a .md5 (or .pit in pit). Would this be a problem.. and how would I fix it?

Err.. if the file is a .rar, you need to uncompress first!
Odin only takes .tar or .tar.md5 or .pit files !!
Hmm.. fail. How would I uncompress a WinRar file?
The file name ends in .tar but when I go to properties, the file type says WinRar..

I use a free program called 7Zip. It's best, IMHO. It can uncompress/compress lots of different formats.. http://www.7-zip.org/
Once you have 7Zip installed, find the file with Windows Explorer, then right-click the file and select "Open Archive".. if you can view the contents, then that means the file is good.
Which file are you having problem? If the file already has .tar extension, then you don't need to uncompress. Only do so it's a .zip, .rar or .7z
Thank you for telling me to use 7Zip. I was using WinRar before and that automatically changed a file into an extension Odin couldn't use. So now I have all my files in eaither .tar or .md5 but Odin is still failing at

I have a Fascinate, but ODIN should work the same. I just downloaded the .zip file you mentioned in your 1st post and unzipped and checked all the files. They seem OK. Have you verified each file is OK?
Do you know which file is it failing? Also, the ODIN included in that .zip file is quite old.. only V1.0. Try this version v1.83 (uncompress first).
Also, did you check the "Repartition" checkbox in ODIN? And put the .pit file in the PIT section?
You sir, are my hero. This is the first time I've seen my home screen in a week!! I would hit that thank you button a thousand times. Although it did delete my Titanium Backup and unrooted my phone, it works!
Any advice towards if I attempt to "flash" a new Mod again?
Would the fact that I tried to flash CM7 (which I understand is Gingerbread) and the kernal it has me downloading is Froyo be a factor? Where would I get a replacement kernal?

I'm so glad I could help! That image you flashed through ODIN is the stock, so it's probably not rooted.
Now that you know how to restore to original stock, you can experiment more. But always remember to read the instructions carefully..
Installing CM7 is a bit more complicated, specially for people who never done it before. I'm not even sure if CM7 or other MTD based ROMs can be installed on a Telus, but I'll do some research. I'm running JT's vanilla Gingerbread myself and it's a great ROM. If you want, I'll tell you how tomorrow..
Well thanks to you, I successfully installed CM7 on my telus following this new guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115090 - (with a couple restoring back to original), the only problem now is that i'm unable to get service. It says if I can't then just flash back to original and try again. I did that a few times but same outcome, no service (or 3g). I also noticed my home button no longer works.. that might be a problem too but I'm sure it's just a bug. Any extra assistance is always appreciated!

Did you wipe Data & Devik Cache when installing CM7?
In my experience, sometimes, you can fix the Wifi/3G issues by toggling Airplane mode, wait a bit and try again. You don't have service at all or is the signal icon just white instead of green? Also, maybe try 1st with just installing the stock CM7 without the glitch kernel..
Yes, i wiped my system, dada and cache (which the instructions said). Toggling airplane mode didn't fix anything unfortunately. When i looked into mobile services available, my phone can only pick up a rodgers signal (which my sim card cannot not connect to it for obvious reasons). Once I downloaded CM7, the guide says that CM7 has a default kernal already in place so i believe i don't have the glitch kernel running. My screen shows 3/4 white bars but no signal or mobile internet.

You can still boot into CWM, but either using ADB, type: adb reboot recovery on a command prompt, assuming you have ADB working..
If not, another way to get into CWM is by using ROM Manager, which is included by default in CM7.
Like I said, I have a Verizon Fascinate, so I don't really know anything about a Telus Fascinate.
Best of luck...

OK. Here is the thing.. As far as I know, CM7 doesn't flash a modem, so when you restored to stock TLJL3, that's the modem that you still have. You can verify by going into Settings, then About Phone. The Baseband version is your modem version. What does it say? What about the Kernel? What's the kernel version? And what version of CM7 did you flash? is it the latest nightly?
Also, when you flashed CM7, you didn't flash another kernel right?
Last thign, although unlikely, I've heard people here having success after reflash CM7 again, after wiping DATA and Dalvik cache..
I've attached the TLJL3 Tulus modem here just in case, flash it in CWM

A question. After attempting to flash a theme... I got a bootloop. So I flashed the provided undo file. Now my phone will not boot past the Galaxy S 2 screen with the warning triangle. Any help? I'm kinda panicking...
dont you make any cwm backup first ?
i believe u can still enter recovery mode ( power + home + volume up ) ,
and do full wipe, and flash any other rom .zip .
p/s: i believe you already have root, and install any rom before
no i didnt... i was rooted. i have both cwm and download mode... but phone wont boot. I live in canada so samsung has not uploaded our stock rom files...
If it is not backup-ed, then you will have an issue.
Now, try wipe phone via CWM, clear cache and clear dalvik.
Finger's crossed it work.
If not, last choice will be install any Custom ROM and it will wipe (hopefully) all the not 'right' files.
nope.... nothing... guess i will take it in for warranty... thank you anyways my friend
I got that as well in the past, although mine was caused by incompletely flashing Cyanogen. Had a major freakout before I figured it out.
The only way I found to fix it is to flash stock firmware using Odin (and you will not be able to restore stock Canadian as it hasnt been released for us yet). I went with the xxKG2 (polish firmware I think).
There may be other ways to fix the problem but this will 99% sure take care of it. Your warranty will of course be void untill the Canadian firmware is released.
Cheers!

An additional note: from what I understand you're also getting the insecure kernel triangle. If the counter in download mode also shows that you flashed non-official firmware/kernel, your warranty could already be void. In that case Samsung may now honour their Limited Warranty Agreement.

/emmc is the external sd card, you probably don't have one in the slot so it wasn't able to mount it.
The Yellow Triangle means you had something changed in the kernel partition, so the custom binary counter went up by 1.
As for stock rom, you will have to wait for Bell Canada to release one.
If you are not looking for stock, I'd recommend CyanogenMOD7, however it is still on nightly development, which means it has it fair share of issues.
I prefer CM7 and its problem over the stock which also has a fair share of issues.
if you can use downloading mode , you can flash back stock rom. believe me it will work.
you can study how to flash back stock rom using odin here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278

Are you sure you've "repeatedly" followed those instructions? You claim that flashing a stock ROM isn't possible. But those instructions require you to flash a stock ROM.
You don't have to flash the ROM that is specific to your region/carrier. Just flash ANY stock ROM to get your phone working again. Then you can flash back to whatever ROM you were on previously.
But if you wanted to get back onto whatever ROM your phone initially came with, you're out of luck.

Wow... you repartitioned the phone. Something that was repeatedly told not to do. Now you have a screwed up partition.
Now you will have to find a official stock rom for your phone, and the correct pit file, then repartition it and hope it works.
The first rule of Odin (for 99% of us) : you never flash a PIT file.
I feel like that should be stickied front page. It would save a lot of people a lot of trouble and possibly around 700$.

Double check the md5 checksum to see if it is the same as posted if it is posted at all. If not, double check the file size to see if they are the same. Most browsers say the file downloaded is complete when it was disconnected somewhere, and the file is incomplete.
I find it hard to take devs seriously, when they don't post filesize or don't post md5 checksum. Either that, or those two information is really hard to find, not on the download page.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 - Bootloop stuck, no recovery mode but do have download mode!

Hello there!
I have read through all the Boot loop posts before anyone asks!
My phone is stuck on the Samsung galaxy s2 boot up with the yellow triangle and the black "!" inside (Boot loop). This happened after flashing the wrong kernel on the device first time. Here is the thing, no matter how many times I try to flash the Kernel which I think is "KH1" (99% sure) in download mode with Odin and all the right drivers installed right from Kies, it still won't work! I've tried stock kernels, insecure kernels... you name it I've tried it!
The phone it's self will go into DOWNLOAD mode (which works fine) , but not RECOVERY MODE at all!
I have been trying for days to fix it, but nothing on here will work.
Please some one get back to me and try to help me fix this problem as I want to use my galaxy s2 again. :/
Thanks, Sam.

A link to what? Neither in this thread nor your original post in the correct thread have you said what happens when you flash with Odin (what errors, what messages, what options you're picking), what ROMs you've tried (I try to flash the Kernel which I think is "KH1" (99% sure) sounds rather flakey).
The full, detailed instructions are in the very first post, here in case you missed it.
If it doesn't work when you follow the instructions to the letter, explain in full what does happen and someone might be able to help you.

Alternatively, it is possible to flash VillainROM 1.1 if you are not comfortable in wiping via recovery, or if you cannot do so for any reason (corrupted kernel etc), as it wipes all users data when installing. Simply ignore steps 2 to 4, and flash VillainROM 1.1 via ODIN instead of the stock ROM.
Any questions about boot loops? Ask them here rather than making new threads.

Tried it, didn't work. :/ I don't think I am using the right stock Kernel though. It said JKH1, but not sure if it is the stock one! Please find a link with a stock one that will work on my phone as none will! Thank you.

Assuming you really do have an I9100, stock ROMs are here [ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KG, KH1/2/3/4, KI1/2/3/4/8, KJ1/2 Download and you should probably be looking for a WIPE ROM, such as XXKI3:

These packages have the new bootloader removed and repacked with the old ones so you can safely reset the binary counter with a Jig.

Have you checked task manager for kies related processes? (ctrl+shift+esc, processes), are the drivers correctly installed, what operating system are you using and which architecture? Have you tried it on a different computer?

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and I have tried on a different computer but the phone won't connect at all on that one! (Windows 7 Ultimate 84 bit.)
If you try to flash a multi file firmware and checking re-partition it still fails? I had this by using one file firmwares. Go to Intratech's thread and download a multi file firmware with new bootloaders to get comletely stock. This can not fail.
I have found out that the most stable multi file is xxki3.
While flashing this that way you should not encounter any failures with Odin.

hi guys, any help would really be appreciated.. i think i have the exact same problem as op. let me articulate it in a slightly more clear manner:
1. i flashed an insecure kernel in order to get root access. somewhere along this process somehow something got messed up.
2. the phone is stuck in a bootloop. this shouldnt be a problem! simply flash stock rom/stock modem, enter recovery mode and do a reset!
3. uh-oh. recovery mode crashes instantly, and the endless bootcycle comes back.
4. ive tried using cwm recovery, stock recovery, both of these have failed.
5. download mode works completely fine (using odin 1.85)
im running the AT&T version of galaxy s2 i777, but posting on those forums havent really gotten a solution, with build version UCKH7. I've tried to find a "wipe" package for this build but although i can find stock PDA and stock MODEM, i cannot find stock CSC. in desperation, i have also tried flashing PDA/MODEM/stock PIT at the same time, but this also has not worked. someone on the i777 forums has recommended trying to flash a new bootloader, but im a little wary with taking that step. noone has done it before.
any ideas?
TL;DR: my phone is stuck in a boot loop, but unlike others, recovery mode crashes instantly before i can even explore any options, and reenters bootloop into main android.

What exactly are you putting into each section in Odin, and which settings are checked? How long does the process take? Did you ever (either when you originally messed it up or while trying to fix it) choose any of the pit/repartition settings? What did you originally flash to cause the problem in the first place?
Is it possible to get screenshots with phone connected before flashing and one afterwards with all the options you're using shown?
This thread mentions something I asked earlier as the solution but you didn't respond to. Have you tried a different USB port and reinstalled the drivers (in Kies: tools -> install driver).
Kies also has a "firmware emergency recovery" though I've got no idea what that does, or if it's recommended to try.

It takes like 2 seconds on this one, other kernels which I flash take about 30 seconds then say PASS, but still boot loops. I haven't choose any of the pit/repartition settings. I just flashed the wrong kernel from trying to root the device for the first time, but this just put it into the boot loop.
I am just putting the "New_Bootloader_GT-I9100_OXA_I9100XXKI3_I9100XXKI3_I9100OXAKI3.tar" in into the PDA and then pressing start. I can't put a screen shot up here though as it won't let me.
I have tried different USB ports and reinstalled drivers. I also tried "firmware emergency recovery" but kies doesn't connect to my phone.

To OP, have you tried this? If all of your attempts thus far have involved a single file, and no repartition, if could be worth a try with one of the packages which has PDA/Phone/CSC as separate files (as on Intratech's description here: http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/8290/odinxm.jpg). Failing that, you could try a ROM which comes with a PIT file to repartition the phone in case the partition table is somehow corrupt/damaged/incorrect, but you might want to consider that a last resort.

Brick Bug? (This the problem where i not sure whether i should root phone or not, or rather HOW do i root with this)
YES. Insane Chip
Download a custom kernel like siyah or dorimanx and install it via Odin. That'll provide root access as well as safeguarding you from the emmc bug.
Look around for a guide on how to use Odin. There's a very comprehensive one somewhere on this site.. if you can't find it, I'll post a short tutorial here.
Also you can download siyah from here. www.gokhanmoral.com
Ensure you download the TAR version of siyah 4.1.5 (for the S2)
Hope this helps

so download the TAR version of it only? i got odin installed previously as i manual update my phone.
and if u dont mind the post, i will be thankful since it would be more situational wise for me. thanks
Yeah. TAR version is for installation via Odin, zip for installing using CWM.
if you've used Odin before the process is the same. Too lazy to search? Tut tut.
Here ya go. Coz I'm nice.
The steps involved (credits to chainfire) are as follows:
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select the .tar file.
- Put your phone in download mode
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure repartition is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot.
- Done
Ensure you have the correct drivers for your phone before starting Odin. And also that you have disabled KIES. It tends to interfere with Odin
Good luck.
Using the thanks button is preferable to typing out thanks. Easier too.

You should have done a bit of research before you muck about with your phone. You know about the potential brickbug, but you should know the basics of recovery/cwm/odin.
If you cant follow what Haxtreme is saying then

Then backup efs
Then flash latest siyah kernel
Then make nand backup
Then stay as you are or install custom rom.

Theres a difference between a noob and a lazy noob.
You see you can eliminate pc/odin problems by using recovery to root and mobile odin(after your rooted) to flash kernels etc.
If you dont learn the "basics",then its your phone that wont work.
no. actually its done(rooting). just want to know what are those u typed.
1.efs can get corrupted
2.to avoid 4.0.4 stock brickbug
3.makes a system snapshot
4.faster/sleeker than samsung roms
Theres the clues, its now up to you.

Try with latest Odin. 1.85 i think. Also, before you try, unistall the phone from the PC and be sure that you have the correct drivers installed. Another suggestion is to try a different USB port.
If you phone boots, you can try Mobile Odin, its on the Play Store. No so sure about this one because i have never used it, but i guess you could give it a shot.

You should not be bothering with ClockworkMod Recovery at all if you are flashing with Odin.
Recovery is built into the kernel.
Do all suggested above and also make sure you have a good usb cable. Cables do go bad.

It seems you need to Odin flash a rom with a kernel that includes CWM recovery.
You are new here so the first place to go are the stickies like here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301682
Work from there and READ, READ, READ!!! Learn what you need because there is a huge amount of "old timers" here that will not spoon feed you any information.
It has been so long since I had to root my phone from stock and load a kernel with CWM recovery. I will try my best to help but will be pretty busy tonight. There may be additional knowledgeable people helping you in the meantime.
Good luck!!
Edit: Firmware corrupted may be an incomplete download. Try downloading the file again. BTW: Don't bother trying to Odin flash CWM recovery....it is built into custom kernels.

You should be able to pull down the status bar after connecting your phone to the compute and it'll give you the option to use different storage modes to transfer.
