[Q] Rooting Alcatel OT-993 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new to this whole Android scene, been an Apple user my whole life. I know the ins and outs of iOS and jailbreaking, but i can't figure out how to root my device for the life of me!
I've looked through Google and found this (bin4ry's recovery), which picks up my device, and I get the screen on my phone saying restore, which I click. Then it comes up with "Starting restore", before coming up with "Restore ended" a few moments later. After that the program just sits there, obviously failing to root the device.
I've also read through this thread but didn't understand any of it, and attempts to follow instructions given were all dead ends
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Have you tried cd (change directory) into the folder where your bin4ry restore is located?
Commonly happens to most phones, there's a video on the site where you download it from.
Also that russian page is for installing CWM (clockworkmod recovery) And you need to be rooted in order to do that.

Ah that explains why I couldn't follow it. Cheers
Also I presume you mean in the command prompt?
puu(dot)sh/2EfaU(dot)png
Would that be correct? Because that is how I have done it every time
EDIT: This is the step it stops on. puu(dot)sh/2EfpJ.png I click restore on my phone and as stated in the OP it starts and ends the restore instantly

Are you sure your phone is rootable via this method?

Its the only method that comes up when searching for my phone, but no I'm not sure. If you know any other methods that work that would be wonderful

Maybe just try some of the most popular methods like unlockroot, or superoneclick,
if all else fails, make sure your drivers are installed correctly, and keep trying and searching around. Good luck.

Same problem
-Ran the latest version of Bin4ry on my Alcatel OT-993 running unrooted Android 4.0.4.
-The script seems to run correctly and I'm able to click the Restore button but it wont reboot the the phone.
-When I manually switch of the phone it displays that the script was successful and says its waiting for the device to reappear.
-When the phone is switched on again the script finishes but says im not rooted

Can't root HTC Hero!Help!

Hey guys,I'm trying to root my Hero, but I am having sort of a technical difficulty.I have tried using the flashrec method, but when I click "Backup recovery image" it says "Backup failed:Command not found".I searched the forums and only thing I found was that if my firmware is patched flashrec will not work. What does it mean that I have a patched firmware?Sorry for the question, but I am partially noob! Also, can I try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543571 method?Seems pretty easy, but the title says "If you have a 2.73+ rom with the new boot you will need to follow This Post to boot the recovery image".I have the stock Cupcake ROM and just fed up waiting for Eclair! My build number is 2.73.405.38 CL#70768 release-keys(yes,it says all that exactly).
And for god's sake guys, please tell me for sure!If I brick my phone I am screwed!Tottaly!
And finally, why the heck will we won't be able to root if we update our Hero with the official 2.1?Seriously,it doesn't make sense to me!
Thanks in advance!

Everything you need is at http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&p=14520#p14520
You will need gold card method iirc.
As for new ROM, there's a new splthat makes it secure, and exploits via. Kernel are patched.
Oops. Double post
Ouch...
First off thank you very much for your reply! But are you absolutely sure there is no alternative? The goldcard procedure seems like a major pain in the a$$ to get working! And,if there is no alternative,is it surely safe?No danger to brick my phone etc.
Thanks!
I'm pretty sure, there's no alternative. But I can tell you, Goldcard Method just sound so much more complicated then it really is. Just read the guide once or twice and your phone will be downgraded and rooted within a few minutes.
Good luck on your rooting. It's worth it
But no bricking,eh?I know I start being annoying, but please try to understand!I don't mind about the complexity,I will nail it,I just haven't tried anything with my Hero and Android yet and don't know what to pay attention to,what to avoid etc..
And another question.I have backed my data up using MyBackup.I will be able to recover it using a custom rom, right?
Also,do I need to be root to flash a radio? And is it necessary?I have radio 63.18.55.06FU_6.35.07.08.Thanks!
You need a recovery rom to flash a radio - you'll find that is very different from "rooting"

As a total newbie to this i managed it on my second attempt yesterday. Most important thing i found was to make sure you mount the card as a physical and not a logical.
It's pretty safe from bricking too, i allowed flashrec to download its own recovery image but from what i can tell it downloaded the wrong one so when i tried to boot into it the phone crashed. Not to worry, back into android and put a different image on it via usb and used flash rec to to install it and that fixed it.
Then later that evening i put a villain rom release on it and found everything on it was crashing, tried a different one and things were still crashing so in the end i put a leaked unmodified 2.1 build on there and that fixed it
Guys,I'm desperate!I've done the Goldcard procedure to the letter, but get stuck where I have to downgrade my phone. It connects allright with the Goldcard's SD plugged into the phone, the RUU starts, recognises the phone, and then it begins by rebooting it into bootloader. Then,my phone reboots into bootloader and the RUU says waiting for bootloader and an increasing number appears next to the "waiting for bootloader" prompt. It waits for a while, but then the RUU stops and says "Error 172:No usb connection" or something like that. What now?
Try BTDAGs guide on setting up drivers for x64 + x86,... then try again.

Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
Nah,nailed it!It was either a wrong driver or that I had left USB Debugging on.Anyway, thank you all for your support!Right now running VillainROM 10.2 and lovin' it!
Only thing is it gets a little hot when overclocked. Will trying a newer radio help?Everything else is a-okay!

It's meant to be a # not a $ for adb shell.....
ok, sorry to be annoying, why is the cid not found then?

Edit: wait a sec - you did actually type the command at the hash line didn't you? After adb shell you type: "cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid" after the # symbol and then it comes up with your CID
Driver is probably not set up correctly (my guess). Try following my goldcard procedure instead (part of newbie guide) and see if that helps.
I havent used this method myself but I have heard good things about it.

[Q] Alcatel OT-910 root and rom development

I have Alcatel OT-910, but i cant find anything about root & rom for this model here on xda-developers forum. I found threads for other Alcatel models (OT-908, OT-980, OT-990) and i was wondering is anyone working on this particular model? Is it possibile to have root access? stock ROM for OT-910? Thanks.
Alcatel OT-910
CPU 600 MHz
OS Android OS, v2.2 (Froyo)
Keyboard QWERTY
root
i have tried to root my OT-910 with SuperOneClick 2.3.3, but it doesn't work.
Keeps stuck at Step #7 Waiting for Device.
also tried to unplug and replug it at this part, but no chance.
any other ideas how to get root? Some of the installed apps are useless for me and eat up my memory, want to get rid of them
rooting problem
I've got OT910 too, tried several ways to root with steps, provided for other Alcatel android phones - no luck.
Try with different versions os superoneclick. Aso you should install Pdanet on your phone and your computer to and try again with superoneclick.
Sent from my ALCATEL one touch 990
No luck still
I tried all SuperOneClick releases, z4root, GingerBreak - nothing really works. The phone is hardly operable without root - too much garbage preinstalled.
Hey, i have an Alcatel OT-909a (which is the same as Alcatel OT-910 but with a lower px camera) and i also am unable to get root access, i already know that there is a stock busybox, and have seen some files of the internal memory but still not having luck, i also flashed some CWM and RA recoveries but i just got stuck while trying to access recovery, so i have to get back to stock recovery, i think there must be a way to do at least a nandroid backup and try to root the backup and flash again, but i dont know, the CWM recovery just boot the android logo, after there is nothing in the screen, but the QWERTY keys are on like if the phone was in recovery, i had tried Super One Click 1.9.2 and 2.3.3 and got stuck in step #7 too, zergRush and GingerBreak doesnt work also, something extrange for me is that the last time i try CWM, it didnt boot into recovery but into fastboot, as far as i know internal memory is read-only except for the installation of apps and some folders (or somehow i push GingerBreak and zergRush to the internal memory isn't?), i can't push su to the xbin or bin folders, but i already saw what is inside xbin an bin (as i said memory is read-only and there are some folders that requires permissions to access), there must be a way to push su to xbin folder (or at least maybe access su in another location?) but i still seeing how?
PD: sorry for my possible bad english speaking
PD2: yes i'm a noob and i hate myself but please some of you that know of this, help us?
Edit: just curious i just push su to "/data/local/tmp" then i just tipe ./su and it appeared on the phone "shell has been granted superuser permissions"

Here an idea: Custom Rom
hey guys, if some of you (someone, anyone who might wanna help?) are still maybe reading this thread, i wonder, i have played with the phone a little (unluckly i really messed up breaking the cellphone and luckily for me, the motherboard was replaced at service center), and i have been able to pull out most of the system partition, custpack and others, (except for the recovery partition) and i was wondering if maybe there is a way to create a custom rom with those files?, maybe we could create our custom rom and flash it, after seeing around the files, i got that 909a it's using what it's looks like at least the same kernel than ot910, (actually some information is from the ot910, in the manual it refers to ot909a-s ot910 as same cellphone but with different px in camera), so maybe we could create a custom GB rom based on the files from the stock system partition, and as alcatel has relased the kernel sourcecode maybe we could even do a custom kernel?, i was just wondering if someone can try to do a custom rom with those files, as i have tried flashing some GB roms replacing files and the phone doesn't boot up to android, but in recovery you get su access and pull the other files, but when replacing files, there is a moment when the system lose adb shell access, so maybe someone with more knowleadge (as i'm new to both android and linux) can help?
Rooting -- any news?
Has anyone succeeded in rooting the device in the meantime? I had no luck with either psneuter, zergrush, or gingerbreak ...
OT-910 successfully rooted!
Hi,
thank's to the great work of giantpune over at Phandroid, the Alcatel OT-910 has been successfully rooted (see the attached screenshot)!
For instructions, cf. the thread "Optimus Elite root with an apk" at Phandroid's LG Optimus Elite forum. Put in a nutshell, you have to install the following two APK's:
1. the Poot-debug.apk tailor-made for this phone, and
2. Ministro II.apk.
Both files are linked at the end of giantpune's original post at the LG Optimus Elite forum.
Note that Superuser, but not SuperSU, will grant root access on the OT-910.
Have fun!

If your last hope is xda... then maybe you will not have that much luck, if you're stuck at TCL logo, maybe you could try using the "OTU Upgrade Tool" (by means "OTU = Alcatel/TCL Flasher") and maybe that will do the trick and then you get your phone back to stock, if not (or if you already did that), then you're a little out of luck, as far as I know, there is no stock recovery around, and also as far as I know, there is no CWM recovery, now, in case you did use OTU Tool, and failed flashing the phone, then is almost sure that your nand is bricked, if you used OTU Tool and that didn't get your phone back, then you should see if you can still flash Android Images (more accurately 2.3.3 (since 2.3.4 did brick my phone twice)), at least with a non-functional 2.3.3 image, maybe you could flash from there with OTU again, or try to modify 2.3.3 system to work with your phone, if nothing of that did result for you, then you're out of luck, because I'm almost sure that would mean that you are in a nand brick, and the only way to solve it, is sending it to Service Repair (at least for now)
now, for using OTU Upgrade Tool, you can download it from TCL/Alcatel website ( www2.alcatelonetouch.com/global-en/support/download.html ) in the download section, select your phone model, and from there download the OTU Upgrade Tool, after downloading, install it and follow the instructions for getting the phone in "Download Mode" (in OT910 = (pressing "Q" key with the phone totally off, and after pressing the "Q" key for 30sec. or a minute, then (still pressing the "Q" key) connect it to the pc and follow the onscreen steps (that means, choosing your mobile and getting in to look for the firmware and download it)
I have a kind of "backup" of the system (I mean, every file that is in /system) but sadly, it doesn't have the properly permissions set, and so, it gives also a boot loop (also I bricked my phone once again and for worse, when it was out of warranty), so if you still in warranty maybe you should send it to service :/
that's the sad of life when your mobile is not the one that is being developed by expert developers (not even a beginner one )
Hope you can fix your phone
thanks for help
thanks man you are my captain...
I recheck the upgrade tool it just say that you have latest software.
So if you have 2.3.3 then please give me that i will update it via adb shell as i can still access it as su.

I will, but before, what version of upgrade tool are you using? (mine has a kind of strange bug that the rom is never ever able to get the last update (as always download saying there is a new update (it's a fake but anyway)), that would be kind of a problem since maybe after you flash 2.3.3 the upgrade tool will state that you're still in latest firmware (even through upgrade tool is supposed to be a service tool, funny isn't?), anyway, since you have nothing to lose (since apparently you flashed a custom recovery that didn't work for you), but, there are this two things you should try before, first (and pretty much the must obvious one) if you have warranty (as long as you're in warranty and never tried to see what's inside the phone), and two, there is a little possibility that maybe you can access adb via the recovery you flashed, even, when the tcl logo appears, try to do "adb shell" or "adb devices", so maybe you can recover your phone without the need of flashing android 2.3.3.
now, if nothing of that worked, then there is nothing to loose, if you have the android sdk, from there you can download a 2.3.3 image, that will boot, but display nothing in the screen (still you can do adb shell with su, and try to properly install libraries maybe?), if not, then i'll check if I can do one system image for you, and see what it does
by the way, if somehow you can access adb , try to do "adb pull" and pull the " /system" partition
it's really sad that we can't (at least not me) figure out, how to use the files that the upgrade tool uses ( 570mb of 10 - 520kb files)

LG LGL75C (Optimus Zip)

Hello everyone.
Forward
Originally, I was going to flash my Droid X2's MEID to my LG OpZip's MEID and use the X2, but found out when I got home, it had to be unactivated, and I was already activated, so that plan went down the drain. I've spent the last, oh, 2 or 3 days trying to root, install a custom rom, and expand my internal storage to no avail. After doing alot of research on the issue in regards to rooting it, I found (on another site I think) that my sw version is not the same as the other OpZip's that have been rooted, and to all of my research, I cannot seem to find anything that matches my model and sw version.
Phone Information
Phone: LG Optimus Zip
Model: LGL75C
SW Version: LGL75CV1
Android Version: 2.3.4
Provider: Straight Talk (Verizon towers)
Things I've Tried
Super One Click
ADB
LG Optimus Zip One Click (different sw version)
Alright, now for the part I need assistance with... Does anyone know a root method for this phone? Are there any custom ROM's that are compatible, or am I overthinking it, and should assume most are compatible?
I look forward to any and all responses, and thanks in advance.

I'll second that bump. The model of this phone is VS700 - But many report that root attempts are unsuccessful because of the SW version.
Interestingly enough, when trying to use LG update software on my PC, it says the LGL75CV1 is indeed on the supported device list for updates, however when the LG software tries to read the SW Version from my phone, it says ERROR. I call up LG, they say all updates should be done through Tracphone.
Is there something different about the file system? are developers somehow locked out of this? Any update would be great. The phone has potential, alot of potential. Lets get it rooted guys!
bump
a friend of mine has this phone with this sw version (lgl75cv1) and is chomping at the bit for me to get it rooted for him. if anyone, anyone at all, has any info please speak up.
thanks guys
I was able to root this phone today easily using this thread referred by a user at another forum.
I can't post a link but the instructions are at androidforums under a thread called "Finally rooted M865c for Straight Talk"
It works fine for the LG Zip LGL75C 2.3.4
It was a very simple process. I am now looking for a way to install a clockworkmod recovery on the phone to make a backup. Anyone have any insight on how to install the correct CWM please advise.
LGL75c Optimus Zip
Everywhere i look it says this phone cannot be rooted because it has a locked bootloader. I even went as far as paying root android for the software which they assured me would root this phone. It failed miserably.
I am looking for anything that will help me root this phone as I want to tether the 3g to my nexus 7 tablet, to have internet wherever I go with my tablet.
How to root LGL75C
I just managed to root my LGL75C (provided by Straight Talk).
Download 2 files:
Poot .apk: sharesend. com/qe9jl6ij
Ministroll .apk: sharesend. com/8orgvw4r
EDIT: Since I'm a new user, this forums board won't let me link to the apk files. Sorry :\
Step 1:
Download the Poot-debug.apk and Minstro-ii.apk and place the 2 files in the root of Your SDCARD.
Or put both files somewhere on /sdcard and open the files via file manager/explorer.
Step 3:
Install both the Poot-debug.apk and ministro-ii.apk. (You will need to make sure that you have enabled "Unknown Sources" under the application settings menu of your phone before you will be able to install these apks.)
Step 4:
After both apks are installed open Poot. It will open up ministro-ii and download quite a few libraries that are necessary for the Poot to work. Once it has completed click the button that says, "Press here to poot", and hope for the best.
Step 5:
Pay attention the the messages displayed on the screen. Most messages should start with a
, but you should see a couple of [-].
As long as the only warning messages you receive are the following, you should have successfully rooted.
Code:
[-]current && current != last + 1: 0000ffff 0000ffff
[-]Haxx has run its coarse. Reboot the device to play again
A demon materialized while pooting. Error code: 64
You will receive these messages because Poot does not recognize the M865c kernel and is unable to clean things up without rebooting.
Again, the three warnings listed above are nothing to worry about.
Step 6:
Reboot your phone to save changes and allow the exploit to take effect.
Step 7:
Open Poot and click on the button that says Built-in rootcheck to verify that your phone is rooted. As long as Poot is able to find 'su,' and it will display its path along with a corresponding message stating success.
Step 8:
You'll probably want to download/install a Superuser app from the App Store/Google Play store, so you can give other apps su privs.

Help! I have NO experience with this stuff. I used this method, but after I pressed "Press here to poot" I go the messages "[-] didn't find symbols" and "A demon materialzed while pooting. Error code: 20 su binary was not written." Huh? I tried rebooting and then pressing "Build-in rootcheck," but the message I got back was:
Path is:
"/sbin:/vendor/bin:/system/sbin:/system/bin:/system/xbin"
no su was found in $PATH
Any idea what this means? I'm so clueless.

I don't even use it anymore. The version I have I bought before it was on playstore I imagine they are the same but you have to install it on the computer to and have the drivers for the phone.
why wont the touch screen work on my lg lgl75c

[Q] LG Optimus Exceed (aka LG Lucid) VS840PP won't take a root

After scrounging, searching, hunting, and generally scrubbing every tree/rock/bush for answers, I have decided that it is time to post. As I am new to these forums, I sincerely appreciate any assistance in this matter. I have tried the only two methods that I can find to root my phone. the one by Bin4ry which is found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460. and another one from a different site that was for JB. I have made sure that both debugging is on as well as allowing installations of non-market applications. I have tried every single usb mode, that just on the off chance, mine was that one phone that wanted to seperate itself from society. Since my phone is running ICS 4.0.4 I should be using Bin4ry's version, but I get stopped by this
Code:

It says that It's done and that all is done, but I think that because the mounting permission was denied that it wasn't able to root the device. I wish someone would resolve this I see people all over the place bragging they have rooted their exceeds "showing proof" and no-one seems to give a crap that some people can't afford the most easily rooted phones and are forced to get the most workable less expensive phones. I have student loans and would have to pay a $400.00 deposit to be able to pay 150 dollars for a semi decent phone and my carrier won't allow me to use the phone I've had for a couple years that I rooted myself. I just want a viable answer to how do you root the exceed I know what I'm doing but I work for a living (making very little at that) and have a child to support so I can't devote a week to figuring it out and am frustrated that nobody seems to give a crap about anything but the new razr or the iphone (trendys).

Yep, I just rooted my VS840PP, seems you need to use the Lg Spectrum root, but since I'm new I can't post links, but you will need the driver file "LG VZW_United_WHQL_v2.11.0.exe" and "LG_Spectrum_ICS.zip" (put these into a search engine)
Install Instructions
Download and unzip
Connect your phone to your PC
Make sure to have the LG USB drivers installed
Make sure to have debugging enabled
Make sure to have USB connectivity set to internet connection
Run the script for your OS (.bat for Windows, .sh for Linux)
Enjoy
I really did think it would make my phone not boot, but surprisingly it worked! EDIT 8-16-13 treat this phone like any other LG Lucid, which means you can go to CM 10 4.1 Jellybean on this phone.

Yeah one which is Android 4.1.2, the file is called "cm-10-20130424-UNOFFICIAL-vs840.zip", but you have to rollback to GB 2.3.6(due to locked ics bootloader), install root, CWM and finally install the CM 10 based LG Lucid beta rom. I see you edited your post and yes it is the standard LG Lucid Gingerbread downgrade method. The forum thread title is "[ROM][BETA] CyanogenMod 10 for the LG Lucid" and its on "androidforums.com" all info you need should be in that forum thread. I can tell you that Jellybean works very well on this phone, and I never want to go back to 4.0.4. :good: But of course there are some bugs, as it seems signal strength is lower, but I may have the wrong baseband for this phone.

You may have to install the baseband for the Exceed. I think in the CyanogenMod beta thread on AndroidForums there is a link but I'm not sure. Use ROM Manager to install CWM Recovery and then Flash CM10.

As long as you're rooted, search on the internet for "cwm installer for lucid" and follow the install instructions on gingerbread, then you want to flash the CWM touch recovery by searching for LGVS840_CWMT.zip and clicking on "CWM Touch Flashable Recovery for LG Lucid 4G - LG Cell Phones ..." Make sure you have the CWMT zip and LG Lucid CM 10.1 zip on your micro sd card. You then use rom manager to boot into recovery and flash the CWMT zip, then do a factory reset and clear caches and finally flash the LG Lucid CM 10.1 available on androidforums.

May I ask which firmware are you suppose to use to do a roll back? Can you just use the Lucid's firmware or does it have to be the Exceed firmware to work for the roll back?

It's the stock gingerbread for the LG Lucid and you look for the method to install with LG's tool and you will need the file "VS840ZV6_06.S6_06.P58014.R5.cab" and look for how to roll back to gingerbread on the lg lucid to find out how to roll it back.

Thanks a bunch, I thought it would be okay to do that but just wanted to make sure before doing it.
Hmm, after restoring successfully, for some reason I cant get the Wi-Fi to work. I tried both versions the V5 and V6 in the dropbox posted on android forum. Can root and everything but unable to access any internet without wifi. Kinda stuck without CWM. Any clues?
Edited: Whoops, Haha, a Factory Reset fixed it.
Edited: Blah after being able to install Rom Manager and installing CWM "Successful" I still get into CWM recovery.
Edited: CWM solved but now I get the "Cant Mount Sd" in CWM. Trided both "fat and "extFAT" and no go. Any Help?
Edited: Finally! Bad SD card! CM 10 up and running! Woot!

Glad to see you got CM 10 on this phone, since it runs pretty good, the only issue I had is the way it handles low signal areas, which is why I upgraded to the LG Spectrum plus I wanted Verizon 4G LTE.

I think I may have had the same issue and it turned out the root files didn't extract correctly the first time, so I deleted the root files and extracted them again and it worked. Of course I can't exactly remember it now, but its worth a try. EDIT: Wait no, it looks like root installed fine, are you on stock ICS or Gingerbread? As Gingerbread has special root tools that are different from ics, also make sure you have superSU installed and try the root checker from the playstore.
Will I be stuck in activation mode?

New to the community and was hoping this was a good place for a related question. I have an exceed and I rooted without problem yesterday. I believe my SD Maid app deleted some important files or something because I stopped receiving incoming calls and texts. Anyway, I soft bricked my phone a few times and got the "Long time no see" message. I thought I unrooted my phone so I tried doing a hard reset thinking I would possibly fix the problem. That made matters worse. My soft brick became the only thing I could see no matter how many times I pulled the battery out and rebooted I was stuck at that screen. After hours of trying to get my pc to recognize my phone/get my phone in download mode, I finally fixed it and rooted again. Problem is that when I went through the unbrick process and flashed the kdz file to my phone, it was then stuck in activate mode. It wasnt a big deal because I just played dumb with verizon and they fixed it in their system being that when trying to activate it didnt give me the option to activate on my same plan/number. A bit annoying but better than nothing. My question is when I roll back to gingerbread or flash CM10 will I be stuck in activation mode again? Sorry for the long post, just figured I would give the what and why before my question!

You mean the activation screen, that you can quite easily bypass, also once it is is active it doesn't need to be activated again. Here is how to bypass activation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WGKCdlnt1s

lg l9 p769 - droid 4.0.4 - i'm lost, could use help, linux user

i have been seeing a lot of threads about rooting this phone, but, they all have windows scripts, even the thread that is said to have a runme.sh does not have it in any of the links that i unzipped - only a runme.bat, but yet, people keep mentioning a runme.sh in it... also, i really don't see any one lying out the steps for doing this with linux.
i'm a noob, and dont really know much about this stuff, but i've done this ONCE before with a galxy exhibit, but it was very easy, i just copied a file to the phone (stock rom?), rebooted into recovery, told it to recover from that file, and i was done.
i have no idea how to do it with my new phone, and so i'm wondering:
1: where can i find the files i need to do this with linux - i just want root, nothing special
2: where can i find the steps necessary to do it - in the easiest manner possible?
3: it says i have droid 4.0.4, ICS, but every one who talks about lg l9 p769 says its JB, so, thats a bit odd...
any help is appreciated.

Your phone is running ICS 4.0, that is the version which it shipped with. Pretty much everyone on here has upgraded to JB either with software update on the phone or they have manually updated with the offline KDZ flash method.
I dont have any experience in linux so I cant help. I hope you can get your phone rooted!

i just started to restart my phone into recovery mode to see if i could put cyenogenmod on it without having to root it first, and it's saying "software upgrade ... please wait while upgrading...", so, i guess it's upgrading to JB right now... i'll see shortly.
but even if it does upgrade to JB, i still wouldn't know how to do it on linux. i figured there would just be some files to download, and a sequence of adb commands that i could type into bash, but, i'm kinda lost. i guess i'll wait and see if it upgrades to JB before asking more questions.
thanks.

well, i tried that "LGpwn" and it didn't work, as well as a fake lg-recovery app. i figured out that i've got a "10g" phone (P769 V10G ICS). i'm not sure what the next step is. some one mentioned downgrading to JB... is there some where you can point me to for that???
i've GOT to get this t-mobile junk off my damned phone... i've even TRIED to install cyenogenmod, but i can't figure out how to get my phone to go into recovery mode (NOT factory rest) - i've tried volup+power+home and volup+power, and neither seem to be working.
Setup a sandbox, windows xp. LG uses windows, no other way to root as of right now for the t-mobile version.

yeah, it's starting to look like i'm gonna have to try this with a virtual machine, or, pay some one else to do it, or, go get my money back and downgrade to a samsung galaxy exihibit (not sure if the new model of that phone is just as easy as the exhibit 4g, but, it's screen is about an inch smaller than the lg, and they're all 3 the same price, so i'd rather keep the lg).
just out of curiosity, how do you get this phone to boot into recovery mode? you don't have to root it for that, or have windows, right? you just hit the right keys on the phone, right? i couldn't get it to work, but, maybe i was doing it wrong. and, if you can go into recovery, does it have to be rooted to use a cyenogenmod image, or will it not really know the difference?
thanks again. i'm sure this thread may help other noobs as well.

If you are rooted on stock T-Mobile 10e or 10g ROM and have the CWM installed from this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095825 follow my instructions.
Place one of these CWM ROM images on your SD-Card:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136204
Place this JB radio firmware from T-Mobile 20d ROM on your SD-Card:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256350
Power off the device.
After power on the back/menu capacitive buttons will flash repetedly. Press Volume down while the lights are flashing and the phone should go into recovery.
Flash the ROM first.
Flash the radio second.
Reboot.
***Notes***
1.) 20d is the latest T-Mobile, 21b is the latest Wind Mobile. Both work.
2.) 21b is lighter/faster but has no wifi-calling.
3.) 21b will require you to manually enter your APN settings for cellular data and MMS. Be sure to write down your APN settings before flashing this ROM.
4.) Some users say battery life sucks on JB. I notice that 21b is better on battery life than 20d.
Option #2.
In Linux install a Windows VM and follow the standard instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173465
Use KVM with a GUI or even easier use VirtualBox.
I'm a die hard linux geek too. I even run linux at work while all of our msp software was written for windows. You are better off just running an old copy of xp inside virtualbox trust me its just easier that way. You can use adb if you like (its the same thing the windows users use in their batch files and just rewrite the bash script, but you will save yourself lots of headaches just using virtualbox. -- my .02

i'm not exactly sure what the end result of your instructions are, as i assumed it was to BE rooted, but the first line of your post says "if you are rooted ...", so, i'm guessing you're telling us how to ... unlock the boot loader?
by the way, that reminds me, i still haven't come across any posts on this site that tell noobs:
# what's the unlocked boot loader FOR - why do you need this - what does it do?
# what's the difference between unlocked boot loaders and being rooted?
# do you have to unlock the bootloader to get root access?
all some one like ME needs, is root access, so that i can edit the /etc/hosts file and test mobile compatibility of web apps on the development server before making them live - and to remove t-mobile damned bloat-ware. i hope this helps others who are trying to understand the basic concepts of getting control over the phone they paid money for.
thanks again. now to find a winxp image to load into a virtual machine...
My bad. I should have read through your original question all the way before posting. I see that you are not rooted.
If you are on 10e ROM you can root in Linux:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1990705
It will require rewriting the batch script as a Linux shell script. It is possible but nobody has done it yet.
If you are on 10g you will need Windows. I have also answered your questions below.

Welcome!
I know that a long time ago when I ran VirtualBox in Ubuntu there was something I had to do to allow USB access to the VM.
Here are the current instructions directly from Ubuntu:

Good luck.
hey, i've got 1 more quick question: is there a way to simply load a pre-rooted ROM onto it, like i did with my samsung? where you put it onto the device, the go into recovery mode and choose the pre-rooted ROM? i haven't seen any mention of that, so i'm not sure if that's an option...
also, how the hell do you make this boot into recovery mode? i still haven't been able to get it to do that?
thanks \m/ (>_<) \m/

Yes you can flash a pre-rooted image. They are available. Use the search?
I posted instructions on the first page showing how to boot recovery.
that's great news - that's all i really needed - i didn't see them before, at least, not conspicuously, but i'll search around again.
and, i must have some how missed your instructions, i'll look again.
thanks!

those steps assume i have CWM installed, and i don't. i looked at installing CWM, and it doesn't have an official recovery app for the p769, and when i went to look at that thread you linked to, it says you must be rooted already. this is the aggravating part of us ignorant people dealing with people who know many things: it appears to us that you have to do some thing that requires that it is already done before you can do it. it doesn't make any sense - just a bunch of circualar requirements, with no beginning.
so, let me ask this a different way: how do i reboot into recovery mode, on a STOCK LG P769 v10g? the lights do not flash, and i'm assuming that is a CWM feature - but CWM is not installed - this is COMPLETELY STOCK - fresh out of the box. so, what do you press, when turning it on, to make it go into recovery mode, so that you can recover from a pre-rooted rom (which i am still looking for)?
i just want to "recover" to a pre-rooted rom, that's it, so that i can delete bloatware and edit the /etc/hosts file (for web app testing). this thread says you cant do this for LG phones http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2174767 - i got the same result the last guy got . trying to borrow a windows computer now...
also, does any one know if it is safe to put a jelly bean rom onto a device that was using ice cream sandwich? is there a difference between the versions that would brick the device? is it not recommended, or is it highly recommended?
thanks again. sorry for all the confusion.
you know, as a side note: it may help more noobs understand this stuff if there was a sort of simplified glossary, perhaps as an official site thread, for the orientation of noobs, that would give an outline of the basic concepts, AND their order of operation. exmaple: "rooting is when you... bootloader unlocking is when you... CWM is for people who want to... you MUST do A before you can do B and then you can optionally do C if so desired...". that would help them understand where to START, then, where to GO next.
well, borrowed a windows computer and i got it rooted, but, i found out a few things about this exact model: it has no "boot to recovery" option, by default - it's locked down pretty good. you can not use any of the other root methods on this model, and you can not do it from linux (f*ck me).
so, that long-winded fake-software-update-while-switched-out-a-hex-edited-binary-file is the ONLY way for this exact model, it seems...
but, at least i can confirm that this exact model CAN be rooted at all
now to remove alllllllll the bloatware... and look into this CWM more and learn more about what is actually IS and WHY so many people install/use/flash it...
hey, does any one know if cyenogenmod ever got themselve's an "app/marketplace"??? that was one of the draw-backs to installing it, last i checked.
thanks @everyone for your help.

I've decided to help you out This page will give you some more info on the P769 and several kdz (roms) for the P769
The fastest way to root is to flash the V21B kdz (this is the Jelly Bean version for Canada) using this guide, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36351786
The reason why you want this rom is because it has a vulnerability that is easy to exploit with Jcase apk
Once your followed everything (and rooted), install Super Su and Busybox
Next install artas182x second init CWM (in case you can't find it on his page, the link is here )
Note: you will see blinking led lights when you see the LG logo (booting up) appear after a couple of seconds. To enter the CWM press the vol (-) when the lights start flashing.
After you installed Artas182x CWM you can recover from someones clockworkmod backup.
following info from Cmahendra's thread
Note: only restore CWM backups from P769 versions or MS769!!!!
Or check out the V10B (MetroPCS "JellyBean") CWM backup
Now the only 2 reasons to unlock the bootloader are:
1. Install a safer and better CWM
The reason why is because Artas182x CWM is a second init (bootstrap), so if you mess around with a busybox apk and something goes wrong or you remove a file that is required (for CWM), it will stop operating. You will have to reflash the kdz or fix what you changed to get it working again.) I've had this problem several times while messing around with different busybox apps and etc.
2. Custom roms
(which you stated you are not looking for) not worth talking about right now.
Answer to questions
The only pre rooted roms are clockworkmod backups, lol
The default recovery is useless to us (unless you feel like solving the problem)
Flashing back and forth (ice to jelly) comes with risk, the program used on Windows to flash is buggy at times. The best way (in my opinion) is to flash only when really required and mostly restore from clockwormod backups. The device is actually hard to hard brick, but it will require at lot more knowledge to get your device running again.

So what version are you on right now
Ice? Jelly?
i'm still on ICS for the moment. still trying to understand what i need to do next. re-reading your post for the 2nd time, and all the threads it references. making sure i don't screw any thing up. thinking about upgrading to JB, and trying this CWM. and looking into this "cyanogenmod" some more, to understand why i never see any one on this site mention it, and what all these "other roms" are about. lmao, like i said, i'm way new to this . it's a lot to take in, even for a web developer .
thanks \m/ (>_<) \m/
