Is there any way to do nothing when I press the search key for long? Usually I used an app named 'DispRotation Switcher' while in ICS- this acts as a toggle for display rotation, it could be launched by long pressing search key until I was inICS, but it does not launch in stock JB 4.1.2 . Instead of that, google now opens!

I have a rooted Samsung Vibrant, running Eugene's R2 Ginger Clone. My search button keeps causing search to randomly pop up no matter what I'm doing on my phone. It's becoming very annoying please help.

Can you clarify? Are you pressing the search button and the search is popping up? Or is search randomly showing up without you touching anything?
If it is randomly turning on, then the button is not your problem.
I know there is a mod to change which buttons do what. I saw a guy who changed his so that the search capacitive button actually opened his camera, so he'd have a dedicated camera. If you are interested in changing or disabling that button, I can try to hunt down the thread for you.
Id like the that mod for sure

Not a bad idea....try "button remapper" from the market....it allows you to toggle the function of the hardware buttons...which leads me to believe you can probably deactivate them
report back if you try (it says theres only partial support for Galaxy S variants)

Here you go. It is using Button Remapper like the guy right below you said.

just tried button remapper on my vibrant running nero v5 w/voodoo. worked fine to re-assign the search button as camera. didn't see anything to completely disable it.
button shortcut didn't either.
fyi
Could you remap it so it does the same thing as the "BACK" button ? Or one could make an app that does nothing. An empty main() method.
How do SGS2 users deal with a long hold of the search button? Not possible?
I ask because a lot of people now use long hold search for Google Voice Search as Siri and other voice command software becomes more popular.
This is not asking how to activate search (which I understand is a long hold of the menu button).

AFAIK the stock firmware won't let you do it, you'll need to install MIUI or Cyanogenmod.

It's a stock feature, custom roms usually integrate jkays app to give the user the choice of enabling/disabling this feature.
I desperately need to upgrade to ics i'm on geewiz gingerbread now and I hate it. My biggest concern is that when I use ics is that my search button will be useless. Is there any way to avoid this so that I could still use the search softkey to bring up google search? Any help would be great
Huh?
The search key still works. Short press brings up Google search and long press on the search soft key brings up voice actions.

When opening lockscreen, pull lock up instead to the right, there's Google
I am also looking for this feature. I know I can launch google now from the lock screen but who wants to turn there phone off every time they want to do a search? I know I can use widgets and other work arounds but why not the menu button like stated above?
Anyone have the answer?
aokp on one x
I'm also looking for this feature. Have you found an answer?

did you close the application or just pressing your home button and re-opening the apps ?
in some case, the apps will read your action pressing home button like the exit button, so the apps just killing itself

Did u press the hm button or the back button? If home button, when u switch over to it, it shld resume instead of restarting the app. However if u press back button, when u switch over to the app. It will be new instead of resuming. Rmb if u wan multi task, press hm button. And when u wan to return back to the app. Hold the hm button and find the app and press it. Dun open it thru the apps place.
