I'm running s-off and latest twrp recovery. haven't flashed anything in a while, thought I'd update rom ( superjelly) and power menu option for reboot to recovery simply reboots phone. choosing to reboot into boot loader works but recovery is no longer listed there. phone has been rooted with custom recovery for a long time, flashed many roms... kind of out of the blue issue. think hboot version is 1.12...
Therr have been a few issues with the latest twrp, not like this from what ive read tho. Try flashing an earlier version. Ive been running 2.3.3.0 for quite some time with no issues at all. Worth a shot.

When you reboot to the bootloader screen, what happens when you select the bootloader option? Does the recovery option appear, or what happens?

This is a bad recommendation if you are on the latest firmware. You won't be able to use this twrp version. Download quickboot from the app store and use this to enter recovery if you can't get into it the traditional method.

Not the complete firmware, the touch panel drivers are not compatible with any version of twrp older than 2.4.0.

I flashed an earlier version of twrp, 2.3.1.0 I think it was and works fine now. thanks for all the recommendations

Are you S-Off or S-On?
Ps. I'm not a fan of CWM. I've used TWRP mostly, and I love it, although a lot of people still swear by Amon Ra
do yourself a HUGE favor and just flash Amon RA 3.15....TWRP has come a long long way but by far the most reliable recovery is amon, hopefully that solves your issues
How do I flash using aromna? Also where do I get it?

Curious:
What ROM are you trying to flash. Some ROMs have custom kernels, and if you are S-on they will not be able to flash from recovery. You will need to flash them from fastboot/hboot. That would cause the ROM not to boot properly if you did not have the right kernel.
I updated to TWRP v2.3.1.0 via goo manager and the install seemed to work but now I cant flash any zips and it wont run a new backup.
No matter what I try to have it do it goes:
Finished running boot script
Simulating actions..
Updating partition details..
Simulating actions..
Simulating actions..
and then it says it was successful. But the backup only runs for 5 seconds before saying successful and the zips I flash dont work. Any ideas? I reinstalled via goo manager and got the same result.

You can install it from goo manager it's in the market, open goomanager press menu choose install openrecoveryscript it will do everything for you
someone on the team win website figured it out. you have to go into the twrp settings and uncheck the box for simulating. worked perfectly after that. sheesh, that only took two weeks.
Is there anything negative about updating your TWRP version? I'm on v2.2.2.0 Is there a possibility the update will mess with flashing ROMs?

How come after pressing that button, and going back to home screen, the backup function doesn't work unless you reboot phone and go back into recovery?
Hey guys, I'm new but have been reading these forums for a while. I've rooted and unlocked 3 phones of mine with no problems but My HTC Evo LTE was ready for an upgrade so I tried to install a new rom, in the process I accidentally erased my back up. I have apps and system back up on titanium. I've read the don't panic thread, nothing helped. I've tried flashing the kernel and just about everything I know how to do.
So right now I have an unlocked device Jewel S-on, hboot 1.12, radio 1.02.12.0427 with TWRp Recovery installed. I have tried Vipers jellybean rom, Mean Rom ICS, and and a rooted stock rom.
All do the same thing, TWRP starts installing the rom and then it reboots real quick before the bar gets to 1/2, it reboots in the HTC quietly brilliant screen and the bar in the upper right goes up twice and then it just freezes and sits on the screen forever until i power it down and reboot into bootloader and nothing is installed. any ideas?
What version of twrp are you using?
You may not have the latest twrp recovery. Older versions will reboot or fail on install. There have been a few changes to the installers, especially with son users since hboots have become more restricted

There is nothing wrong with the latest twrp, but the rom you are installing has to be compatible with it. The newest MeanBean is. It's kind of funny that the op has the most out of date phone firmware you can have but somehow updated his twrp to the newest available.

Wow, so easy. I can't believe I spent all those hours frustrated trying to figure what I was doing wrong. I put 2.3.1 on and first try, installed fine. I have one more question, I downloaded titanium to reinstall everything and it's saying ERROR: I could not acquire root privileges, this app will not work. I installed Viperboys Stock Rooted 3.15.651.16 deodexed and SU is on there, I even updated it. Any ideas?
thanks a lot for the help so far.

I usually wait at least a week to see if any problems come up
I tried flashing a couple ROMs but none of them would get more than about sixty percent done before they stop making any progress. I literally had one trying to flash for over six hours. I am s on, with twrp 2.1.8. I was trying to flash mean bean from cm10. I realize that I would have to flash the kernel separately but I could not flash the cm Rom either. I ended up having to restore my nandroid.Any ideas?

You have to update your TWRP. That version is so out of date no rom will install with it. The latest version is 2.4.4. Either download it from the teamwin site or install goo manager from the play store and let it update the recovery.

2.4.4.0 will only work if he's on the latest OTA full firmware including touch panel drivers
If he is not I suggest 2.3.1.0

Sorry to necro this, but I haven't been in a position to answer until now. The link you sent me is no longer available. So I am wondering if I can grab the 2.3.1.0 from This repository? and will this video be the correct way to do the fastboot to update my recovery?

Yeah, that repo is good. As for vid, didn't have time but would guess yes. If you want confirmation, check YouTube for vids by qbking77 about flashing recovery on galaxy nexus, it's a great tut for setting up adb and fastboot.

So the 2.3.1.0 version would be okay for me as far as being able to flash? I am not sure which one would be okay as far as what OTA I would have
Also video tuts show that I should fast boot with "fastboot flash boot boot.img". Since I am doing the recovery.img I should be able to instead type "fastboot flash boot recovery.img"?

If you have the latest OTA (software version 3.16) and newest firmware you need TWRP 2.4+. Otherwise 2.3.1.0. is fine. As for your second question, you are correct. I normally will rename the recovery file 'twrp', so I use the command 'fastboot flash recovery twrp.img'.

Today I picked up my new GS4 and it comes with MDK (sw ver on box ends in MDK). I want to root right away and probably unlock in a few days, so I have a question.
Do I need to activate before I do anything or can I just turn it on for the first time and root? I ask because I have heard that it will try to update as soon as I power up the first time and I do not want ME7.
I have searched a bit and wasn't sure so I am in a holding pattern. I have found the rooting directions and have everything together.
Thanks!
You can go ahead and root. You can put your phone in airplane mode so it wont download anything. Afterwards youll have to disable it so you can update root binaries. The update file is a hundred megabytes so youll have time and by chance if you get the whole file you can postpone it. After rooting I recommend freezing/renaming/deleting sdm.apk to get rid of the update notifications. This will also kill the update process as well so you dont have to worry about it updating your phone afterwards.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
I don't think you have to activate but even if you do, just root your phone now like right this second root and install a custom recovery. I activated my phone, deferred the update and then got root and installed twrp.
P.s. incase you accidently press accept on the ota, pull your batt and come back here for help.

Ok, I have another question. Does installing a custom recovery break 4G? I ask because on my last device (Motorola Photon 4G on Sprint) lost 4G service when flashing a custom recovery. I have Rom Manager installed and would like to flash the latest CWM as long as 4G will still work.

It doesn't have any affect on 4g.
That's a nice change. Thanks!!
One final question before I become a serial flasher trying a few ROMs that just interest me so much. Which recovery? I want to eventually run Cyanogenmod, that is, unless I like something else better than CM (it was hard to beat on my Photon). Should I use the one I can install through ROM Manager, TWRP, or a CWM based recovery (such as the one linked on CM's webpage)? Whichever it is needs to work installing CM.
TWRP is cool, but wasn't working for downloading as of yesterday (for me). I used Rom Manager since it was easy, quick, and I'm very used to them. I always hesitate a bit on CWM just because I remember some bricking issues on the SGS3, however, it never happened to me.
Cool, Thanks! I'm familiar with CWM but for some reason I don't have the same good feel with the GS4 as I did with other devices. I guess I'll go with Rom Manager.
Let the flashing begin!!

It freezes on the boot logo too often and in general isn't as stable as 2.5.0.2 also I hate the new placement of where cache and dalvik-cache are in the wipe menu. It makes it way to easy to accidentally wipe the wrong partitions. But if you want to try it I can make a zip.

Just made the TWRP 2.6.0.0 zip. Flashed it myself to make sure it works.
Note: I dont recommend flashing twrp 2.6.0.0 unless you knew what you're doing and have a way to restore a recovery. If you do install it you may get stuck on the teamwin blue screen the next time you reboot recovery. Don't freak out, just hold menu + power button for ~15 seconds and the device will shut down. Reboot and it should reboot to twrp this time, without getting stuck on the splash screen
