Any way to document date of root? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
Is there any way to find the date that I first modified the software in my phone?
The thing is my screen has been worn out (by my case cover) extremely fast and I want the warranty to be covered, that also means that Samsung is currently saying that it might be the software change that has caused this (no, I'm not kidding).

Any idea where I can find the stock rom? or is it included in Odin?
And thanks by the way!

Omg, never give rooted or modified in any way phone for the warranty! They can cancel it and you will do nothing more.
Also there is few good tutorials how to bring back your phone to stock, use the search button at the top.

[Q] USB jig

Edit 10/11/12
I received my jig from mobiletechvideos.com today. It worked as advertised. It reset the triangle, as well reset the custom binary download count to No, and reset current binary to "Samsung Official" even though I am running entropy512's 10092011 kernel.
Here is a link to a video, mine works just like the video

----------- original post below -------------
Has anyone tested a usb jig with the att gs2 yet?
It should work the same as with the i9100 version, but I was just wondering if anyone who has the phone that might have a jig and tested it yet.
I just tested my jig (I am rooted and had the triangle on my att version) and my count now says NO and the yellow triangle is gone.
Thanks, I wanted to just make sure before I bought our made one.

no problem man....glad you asked because i never would have tested it lol. So fantastic question!
My captivate jig did not work. Had to use the button combo and plug in usb.

If I recall correctly, there are a few different possible resistor values for jigs? Which one is yours?
Now that I have a device with the bootloader counter, I need to get some resistors and finally open that package of MicroUSB breakouts from Sparkfun.
I'm considering buying the SGS II in the next week, what exactly does the Jig do? I didn't see much in terms of why you would need this for rooting so I figured I would inquire.
It will put your phone into download mode as long a your bootloaders are not corrupted (which can be done by other methods also), but more importantly it resets the binary flash counter to zero and removes the yellow triangle from the boot splash screen if you have a custom modified kernel or ROM flashed to your sgs2 phone.
All in all not a necessary device, but very useful to those who flash and modify their phone

So if I am not mistaken it's just a way to prevent AT&T Support from visually seeing you have at somepoint flashed a different kernel and theoretically voided the warranty.

Oh that wouldn't bother me in the least considering how rarely I reboot my device. Thanks, I appreciate the help. I anticipate that the community will have roms churned out left and right for this device based off the ease of hacking and the number of ROMs that were available for the Captivate.

my captivate jig worked on the S II
I think we will see a few people with old jigs that do work and old jigs that don't and it will be because slightly off the mark resistance. I bet those whose old jig that does not work will just need to tweak their jig by an ohm or two.
By the way I ordered a jig from mobiletechvideos.com yesterday and I will report back on if it works when I get it here.

Do you recall how many ohms your jig is and what wattage? I built mine with 301 ohms @1/4 Watts. Would unbrick Captivate to DL mode, but not soft-bricked Infuse. It would put working Infuse into DL mode though?????

Trying to unroot

Okay, this is driving me nuts. I've found multiple posts on how to unroot my phone but ALL the links are dead for Odin and everything I need to do it. SOMEBODY PLEASE throw me some links that work and instructions! I rooted it with the one click root method thing. I gotta get this thing back to stock so I can get my replacement since the screen is cracked.

You don't need to unroot your phone. I sent mine back rooted with a custom rom and got a replacement.

IMO its not worth the risk when it takes less than 5 minutes to Odin back to stock.

Thats great...but when they go to test it and find out that its been hacked, Verizon is going trace that phone back to you and charge you for the replacement. As the poster above stated, its not worth the risk when it takes 5min to odin back to stock.
they actually still can tell that the phone has been flashed even if you odin back to stock. The only way to truly completely hide that the phone has been rooted is to use a usb jig and reset the custom binary download counter.
But they honestly don't care. This is all much ado over nothing.

On the new devices that have flash counters yes...but from my understanding not on the fascinates or older devices. Maybe Im wrong tho?
I was pretty sure that the fascinated had this counter as it is triggered when Odin flashes the phone.
Anyway, I'll try to look into it if I get time.

Warranty Question

My phone broke so the power button no longer works. I called AT&T and they are going to send my a new (or refurbished) phone. My question is what would be the easiest way to reset my flash counter so they don't know i voided my warranty. the way i see it i have two options:
1. Buy a jig really fast and use that
2. Flash an ICS rom and install Triangle Away ( an app by chainfire).
I'd prefer number 2 but as my power button is broken, I would not be able to manually boot into download mode when i'm done to restore the stock rom. Would flashing an older version of miui or any other rom with an option in the interface to boot to download mode work in my case?
Any input is appreciated. I would really not like to pay $400 is they found i voided my warranty.
Sounds like jig is the.only real option. Maybe find someone locally who has one?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
You have 10 days to return it, I think.
You can also buy the parts at a local Radio Shack or other electronics parts store. You need 401,000 ohms across pins 2 and 5 (I think, typing from memory here. Verify before acting.) It's not as easy as a jig, but can be done in a few hours or less.
Best bet is to make it yourself if you can handle basic soldering..Otherwise find an ebay seller within a few hundred miles that has a good rep for fast shipping. Tough to navigate w/o power, good luck!

You can also boot into download mode buy powering off your phone and holding volume up and down buttons and hooking your phone to your computer works for me everytime.
Mmm doesn't an app give u the option to boot into download mode like that cwm app or Rom toolbox?

I'm sure you seen this thread already: [GUIDE] How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash Counter!!.
I carefully followed the steps and it worked flawlessly. Haven't had to flash a ROM over USB since the initial Stock+root ROM and never incremented the flash counter.
Are you just playing it safe just in case?

Help fully restoring phone to stock.

I've noticed on my phone that on the right side my phone is developing dust in it and on close inspection you can see that there's a big gap compared to everywhere else. I've had the phone for a few months on contract and got it through carphone warehouse and after speaking to them they said they will send it back to Samsung.
I'm on a custom ROM and need to get back to stock and reset my flash counter to get my warranty back. I've got an idea how to do it but would appreciate your guys expert knowledge. I've read that you need to use triangle away but heard people say that it can break your touchscreen.
Thanks.
Use the guide in the stickies. Easy like that.

On the triangle away thread it says if you're on s3 you need to be on stock rom for it to work but the instructions on the sticky don't say that plus he's using ICS.
Here you go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2148708
Triangle away also runs with custom roms as it is more connected to the bootloader (?) Or recovery then the rom.

[Q] Broke the screen on my rooted S4. Can anyone point me the stock ROM?

I figure I can just use Odin to unroot, but I need help finding a good stock ROM. I heard the NoWipe version isn't the best to use because they might search for SuperUser apps and deny the warranty, and that's all I've found.
Thanks

I think you'd be fine to uninstall the super user app. I think you can use the no wipe tar. But they might update it. Or they might not. If you don't have the custom screen on boot send it in.

Oh, I'm sorry I should specify. My screen is broken, as in I can't see anything on it. Not just cracked glass. So it's not necessarily just a matter of uninstalling super user. Since I'm not sure I can do that with a broken screen.
