Warranty Question - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

My phone broke so the power button no longer works. I called AT&T and they are going to send my a new (or refurbished) phone. My question is what would be the easiest way to reset my flash counter so they don't know i voided my warranty. the way i see it i have two options:
1. Buy a jig really fast and use that
2. Flash an ICS rom and install Triangle Away ( an app by chainfire).
I'd prefer number 2 but as my power button is broken, I would not be able to manually boot into download mode when i'm done to restore the stock rom. Would flashing an older version of miui or any other rom with an option in the interface to boot to download mode work in my case?
Any input is appreciated. I would really not like to pay $400 is they found i voided my warranty.

Sounds like jig is the.only real option. Maybe find someone locally who has one?

You have 10 days to return it, I think.
You can also buy the parts at a local Radio Shack or other electronics parts store. You need 401,000 ohms across pins 2 and 5 (I think, typing from memory here. Verify before acting.) It's not as easy as a jig, but can be done in a few hours or less.

Best bet is to make it yourself if you can handle basic soldering..Otherwise find an ebay seller within a few hundred miles that has a good rep for fast shipping. Tough to navigate w/o power, good luck!

You can also boot into download mode buy powering off your phone and holding volume up and down buttons and hooking your phone to your computer works for me everytime.

Mmm doesn't an app give u the option to boot into download mode like that cwm app or Rom toolbox?

You can always use adb reboot download to reboot into download if you got adb setup

Why reset anything? It's broken. Drop it in the toilet.

I'm sure you seen this thread already: [GUIDE] How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash Counter!!.
I carefully followed the steps and it worked flawlessly. Haven't had to flash a ROM over USB since the initial Stock+root ROM and never incremented the flash counter.
Are you just playing it safe just in case?

Trying to unroot

Okay, this is driving me nuts. I've found multiple posts on how to unroot my phone but ALL the links are dead for Odin and everything I need to do it. SOMEBODY PLEASE throw me some links that work and instructions! I rooted it with the one click root method thing. I gotta get this thing back to stock so I can get my replacement since the screen is cracked.

Thats great...but when they go to test it and find out that its been hacked, Verizon is going trace that phone back to you and charge you for the replacement. As the poster above stated, its not worth the risk when it takes 5min to odin back to stock.
they actually still can tell that the phone has been flashed even if you odin back to stock. The only way to truly completely hide that the phone has been rooted is to use a usb jig and reset the custom binary download counter.
But they honestly don't care. This is all much ado over nothing.

On the new devices that have flash counters yes...but from my understanding not on the fascinates or older devices. Maybe Im wrong tho?
I was pretty sure that the fascinated had this counter as it is triggered when Odin flashes the phone.
Anyway, I'll try to look into it if I get time.

[Q] Avoiding/resetting the TMo flash counter?

Is there any way that maybe I've missed to either a) root the TMo GS3 without triggering the counter (I saw methods for AT&T and others) or b) reset the counter after triggering it? I've searched and searched without finding anything. Is there anything out there or would it be fairly simple to create something? I'm willing to get my hands dirty to create this if somebody is able to help me through he process.
Are the methods AT&T users use reproducible for us?
Bump
I'm looking for a way too. Havent rooted yet till I find a way. I have 30 days to try out Tmo through costco but I want to root so I can restore my apps+ data back via titanium.

Costco is the best! Great prices on phones too! There will be a way to reset it eventually. That is my GUESS.
Okay, I've found the process for creating the proper files so this can be done. It'll just be a specific Odin file, slightly tweaked from a stock Odin file.
I've never tried this before although it seems to be fairly standard with Galaxy devices. I don't believe ANYBODY has ever tried this on a T999 before.
I'm thinking I'll have something to test with this weekend. Anybody interested in helping me to test this? If you do, you do so knowing that this may
1) trigger your counter anyways, and
2) brick your phone into oblivion and make it blow up and kill your dog
If anybody's willing to take the plunge, I'll chime back in later to coordinate the testing. I need others to risk triggering their counter as I have 1 and only 1 device with the counter still at 0 and I want to personally see it successfully in action before I publicly release it. But if I miss something and trigger my counter, then I'll never be able to test it again until we find a way to reset the counter.
Thanks for taking the initiative. Hope you get successful results.

Hit me up on Twitter (@Jaxidian) or GTalk (Jaxidian)? I'll get you Dropbox links when I have this ready (will be doing it over the weekend unless something comes up).

Anybody else interested in helping test? Remember, I'm probably going to brick your phone and make it turn into a Decepticon where it'll kill your goldfish. And more realistically, if I mess it up, it'll probably be a soft-brick that will require a stock Odin flash and/or it'll trigger your flash counter.
So I'm mostly finished creating the file for this but I'm stopping. mrRobinson beat me to it, and apparently did so last night!

[Q] Bricked Vibrant?

So i was attempting to root this thing and put a fancy new rom on it, but have got lost along the way and now the phone will not boot into download or recovery modes. It just says Samsung Vibrant and stays there until I pull the battery. I am unable to do the key combos for any of the modes. The only way I could get into recovery was through adb command. But now I cant even do that. Any suggestions or should I just throw it in the can! Thanks

Yes a usb jig (dongle) should solve your problem but its not a guarantee. I would recommend buying one anyway, its a good thing to have around just in case things go wrong. They are only a few bucks so its worth it. You can also try using odin, I have heard of people flashing to stock without a download screen, if you see a yellow com box in odin then your good to go.

try this.. it works for me..
1- Open ODIN on your PC. (DO NOT PRESS/SELECT ANYTHING IN ODIN!)
2- Plug in the USB Cable to PC
(preferably the one that came with your phone *My N1 cable doesn't work??*)
3- Power down Phone if you had not already.
4- Remove the battery.
5- Plug USB into Phone.
6- Hold down BOTH volume buttons and while holding both, insert the battery.
7- Two to three seconds later your phone will be in Download Mode.
Be mindful to not remove connection while ODIN is running.

@MikePysh
I have been in this situation. I feel for you. This the mothergoosing EU bug.
Best bet (and this is how I did it) is to replace the motherboard (I know it sounds scary but it is NOT).
Here are the steps:
1. Buy a used/busted/for parts Vibrant (broken LCD, etc) or even a Galaxy S 4G SGH-T959v from eBay or wherever you can. Do not pay more than US $30-35 if it comes down to that. These two phones, i.e. your T-Mobile Vibrant SGH-T959 and the upgraded 4G version SGH-T959v have the same specs with the exception that the 4G radio is activated on the "v" version.
2. You can either fix it yourself (if you feel brave) or take it to a repair shop and maybe pay US 20-25 for labor to replace the motherboard.
It entirely depends on how badly you want to fix it without throwing it away.
Check out this: http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Samsung_Galaxy_S_Vibrant to get a feel if you can do it yourself.
Hope this helps.
Thanks fham! Sounds like a project I might attempt.

Any way to document date of root?

Hi!
Is there any way to find the date that I first modified the software in my phone?
The thing is my screen has been worn out (by my case cover) extremely fast and I want the warranty to be covered, that also means that Samsung is currently saying that it might be the software change that has caused this (no, I'm not kidding).

Stated that in the OP, battery was full when I started the update. Only took it about 5 minutes before it went black, so I know the battery isn't the issue.
You may have bricked your phone. You're not supposed to run the update if you're rooted and unlocked, something about it not being able to update with a custom recovery. I almost made the same mistake.
