Just bought an xperia active thinking that I could essentially use it as a poor man's version of a garmin edge.
It came with 2.3.4 and I updated it to 4.0.4. The problem is I haven't been able to get a GPS lock at all no matter what I do. When I searched around apparently it was a bug that was fixed in 4.0.4 but it doesn't seem to be the case.
I tried it in airplane mode (to try to save battery) at first but it didn't work so I turned the radio on (without a SIM card) thinking that it might also turn the GPS receiver on to no avail.
Can I not use my phone as a dedicated GPS without a data plan?

I think after I have installed a 2.1 android rom (I guess it was Kagudroid's) and switched back to MCR3.2b5 (with wiping of course) location determination via gsm cells broke down. I.e. Google Maps and all other apps are unable to determine my location based on only the gsm network (not wifi / gps).
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Wiping one time or another doesn't help me to fix this issue.
I know even put back up the original 2.73.405.5 rom via the RUU. So I would think that everything would work again, since everything is original again. No luck.
Could this mean a hardware failure?
don't think so, unless you don't have any signal at all?
have you tried upgrading to / reflashing the latest radio?
Yep, tried that as well. Doesn't help me. This really annoyes me.
never had this happen sounds a strange one. on your so list is network location app installed?
none of the 2.1 ROMs have the cell location working properly.
Have you done a wipe since you came back from 2.1? If not, there may still be some bits from the 2.1 hanging around somewhere.
As mentioned in my topicstart I did do a wipe. However I have already determined the cause of the problem. It is the provider. Checked that with an other SIM. Furthermore I have come to the conclusion that changing to 2G mode also resolves the problem although I definitely don't want such slow internet (plus changing to 2g is not possible on mcr3.2). I'm gonna contact the provider to see what they can do. Likely that they're having problems with the gsm antenna coordinates after all... Thanks all...!
Hi
Seem to be havin a great deal of problems getting the GPS to start in programs, like TOMTOM and google maps. I have installed and tried gpsplex and gps gate. and have had some connection success then nothing.
What are the best settings to have the com port on or none or gpd etc.
When updating gps position it will do sometimes then it says failed to save then it does sometimes.
Getting tired of this phone and weakening for the nexus one or back to apple.
search the forum you will find it.

Set com port 4 in External gps, then set gpsgate. Enter Intenal gps and download(check your internet connection if on , if not, try once again,if still no positive result , soft-reset,try again.) After getting gps-data, power on gpsgate, check for incoming data(OK),power on tomtom, get in open air until you got a gps-fix(depending on certain factors it can take a while 2-3 minutes), everything should be fine.
Let me know your progress(or not).
Hi
Thanks for the reply, ended up doing a fresh install of everything and after boot gps worked first time with google maps with gps on default setting of GPD9 in external gps setting, did the internal gps update over wireless lan as it seemed to work better than cell connection.
Installed GPSMod driver and bingo tomtom found it and everything ok.
But later after a few active sync sessions i went outside and again nothing off both google and tomtom, no sats found. Did a power down and again everything seemed to work, strange !!!. So that where im at, a not to reliable gps connection.

I was really frustrated with gps disconnections at first, was the only thing that bothered me in this phone, other than that i loved it. The problem is clearly a matter of rom's radio. When i had a rom with radio version 5005.1600.05 i had disconnection in GSM phone mode but steady signal and no disconnections in HSDPA mode. Problem fixed in 3G/HSDPA mode. Since i flased a rom with radio version 5005.1700.05 i had never gps disconnection problems in both GSM/3G mode. Problem gone!
If you have the stock rom installed, try turning the phone to 3G/HSDPA mode if it's in GSM and check again. But i advise you to install a rom with 5005.1600.05 radio version, great call sound quality and great satelite connection. I personaly found this rom Revamped Release 5 Loaded Radio 5005.1700.05 05/21/2010 best for me and will stick with it for a while.
The phone is ok, this is not a hardware issue it's clearly a matter of radio driver. Don't quit on this phone yet, it's a great device if you can cope with charging every day . But this is the case more or less with big screen-1ghz-small capacity battery phones, except if they have led screen
I have noticed that it is not possible to use GPS on Springboard without SIM card from TMobile and data plan. Does anyone know of any hack? I'd love to run applications like Copilot and use this as GPS.
I am running rooted Huawei Android 4.0.3 version BTW and that hasn't helped!
Thanks in advance for all your help.
you don't need a sim card so that GPS works.
i used my gps software Navigon on the mediapad with Flight Mode (to save some battery
I use GPS all the time without SIM card in my Springboard.
Might check your settings. An app like 'GPS Status' may also be helpful to see satellite status, etc.
Thank you all for your inputs. I guess something was wrong with my ROM - I updated the image to C232B005 and it has started working.
Hey everybody
I hope I can get some help from you guys.. I got this issue that I started to get into the running and started to need more of my gps to track my training and Ive noticed this weird behaviour of my gps.. It just wont even search for satellites whenever the 3g is on (you know the alert that says searching for gps).. installed the GPS checker to see if there was no satellites or something but it wont even search for them whenever I have the 3g on.. I found that the GPS works only if I disable the Mobile Data and restart my phone.. So I cant have both at the same time.. the minute I enable the 3g data it stops working and I have all the GPS options checked at the configuration and the wifi 3g assist.. What could be causing this?
Please let me know if some of you guys have some issue like this.. I have JellyBam 9.0.0 cyanogen mod based 10.1 and baseband XXXKI4

If you don't have this issue with a stock ROM, its probably a bug in the Jellybam ROM. Have you done a clean install? Since Jellybam has been banned from XDA, you probably won't get support for that ROM here. Maybe you should try contacting the dev of the ROM on their forum.

I tried the Omega stock V24 and had the exact same issue..
There's a number of GPS 'fixes' on here, I suggest you search for the threads containing those fixes & try some of them.
Hi!
I just want to share my workaround having same problem as this. After configuring my gps.conf as i've posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239713&page=77, all went smoothly and fast GPS lock for just about 5 - 15 sec, even on a cloudy or rainy day. Then last Tuesday morning, as soon as the mobile data got connected it cuts the GPS. In short, GPS & mobile data won't run simultaneously. I ran a series of reboot, shutdown, clean up... then as much as i don't want to, i ended up reflashing/reinstalling everything but to no avail! Now, since everything is fresh w/ my S2, but still had same problem. I now zeroed in the problem to how my mobile data connects. I didn't think of this before because everything works perfectly fine. Anyway, this time i changed the Network mode from "WCDMA only" to "GSM only". Finally! it works! problem solved.
So far as of this writing, both the GPS & mobile data connection are working simulteously. Only drawback are: (1) I can't browse the net using the "GSM only" mode because of the bandwidth limitation, but works ok w/ Waze app. (2) If i switched & connected to mobile data using "WCDMA only" mode, i need to switch again to "GSM only" mode & restart the phone in order for the GPS to works again.
I don't know, but i'm thinking if our telco here has something to do why I had this problem. Maybe they change some configuration... I dunno.

Android 4.1.2

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem. Searching forum and the internet without results.
Last week I spent a lot of time with my SGS2. The problem occurs when gps and mobile internet data are used at the same time, but only when the phone use 3G or H+ standard.
When mobile data are transmitted on E/2G there is no problem at all. The issue with gps is that when I drive car and I'm in one location at the city (every day at the same place) the gps icon disappeared and no navigation at all. This is quite big square around 2x2 km. After I leave the area I have to turn off and on the phone and everything works ok, even when mobile data 3G/H+ are transmitted.
So described problem occurs only at the specific area. I don't know what cause the issue. After next researching I discovered, that gps disapeared ONLY WHEN THE PHONE USES UMTS 2100 MHz. In the service menu I mark only UMTS 900 MHz and the gps works very good. This time mobile data 3G/H+ are used simultaneusly with gps and everything is ok.
So the problem is olny when we are connected to BTS at 2100 MHz and only at the specific area. It seems that some kind of 2100 MHz signal intereferences wiht gps circuit maybe. I'm not a proffesionalist, I only suppose that.
Maybe somebody will find the complete solution with that.
My problem is at the cetral of Poland. I tried a lot of firmwares, modem drivers, gps.conf modifications. Nothing. Zero results.

Hmmm... it seems our telco here has something to do w/ my concern. Today, simultaneously my S2's GPS & 3G/H+ are working perfectly fine. I didn't do any reconfiguration w/ my S2, i just tried to switch how my mobile data connects, from "GSM only" to "WCDMA only".

Happened today. Was peacefully browsing internet with Chrome using my mobile data when suddenly I lost access to the internet. No messages shown on screen or anything.
Chrome won't load pages, showing the DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET error code. All other apps that use the internet immediately show an error saying theres no internet access. Additionally, when I ping a remote address (eg. 8.8.8.8) via terminal, I'm getting spammed with "Destination Port Unreachable" so much that the terminal app hangs and I have to force close it.
I already confirmed it's not a carrier issue, other SIM cards show the same issue on this phone, when all of them works on a different device. I tried changing between 2G/3G/4G, reinstalling my carrier's VPN profile for internet connectivity, staying in airplane mode for about 10 minutes (per carrier's recommendation), also tried restarting the phone and even wiping the cache partition.
WiFi internet works fine, so does the rest of my mobile functionalities (SMS, calling). Any ideas about that one?
There are many reports of this happening. It has something to do with the fragile antenna connector/wire. You'll have to open the back cover and check if the wire integrity and connector is intact.
If you are in warranty, send it straight to service center.
WiFi and Bluetooth are on one chip. So if one works, the other should work too.
Cellular is on separate chip.
Good luck my friend. I hope you can get your phone fixed.

That's strange, I'd think a loose antenna connection would not be picky about only impacting internet connectivity but not phone calls and messaging?
Either way I can have a look at this, never opened the back cover on this phone, I assume it doesn't void warranty?
Okay, since I was only evaluating MIUI 11 (flashed it a few days after release) and there were already a few things that annoyed me with it, I decided to pull the proverbial trigger and switch to something else.
And I'm glad that I did, giving LineageOS 16 a try (build 17.11.19) and mobile data is now working exactly like it used to do Good news, since it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue, but also bad news, since it seems like MIUI 11 has some sort of an internal issue that can permanently (?) break mobile data. Well, I'm not willing to put up with it, hopefully somebody else more skilled than me can discover what could have been wrong
guys, i just lost my data connection. 4G logo is available but no internet. I swap from Sim1 to Sim2 slot also the same. I have tested my simcard with iphone 6 and it is working.
