Have we received a clear answer on how this works? Has anyone else noticed that when you loose 4g signal while on a call that the call will drop?

i know this is gonna sound mean but it makes sense. if u lose 4g its not a smooth transition. so until it reconnects to either 3g or 4g u tech dont have any service
Unfortunately they are right. There needs to be a better setup as anything up to 3G runs on the same CDMA radio, so therefor it switches and forces a dropped call. 4g is a separate card and works on it's own. Until there is a way to get "just" calling and 4g (aka turning 1X 2g, and 3g off but not 4g) it will continue to do that. I assume custom ROMs will do this in time, but as of the moment it's a known issue that it happens. Sorry to hear it causes you and so many others troubles.

well.....you could go into that secret menu and just enable LTE radio. i dont remember what the code was tho
Your phone calls do not go through the 4G network so that actually would make no sense at all... Your phone routes calls through the standard radio all all data through the 4G radio (if available). If you do not have 4G coverage, the both voice and data are carried on the standard 3g signal. This is Verizon's first simultaneous data and voice over 3g (yes, cdma data and voice) and there are known issues with the tech right now. However these issues have zero to do with any phone using 4G for data while you're on a call. Hope that helps clarify.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. Unless it's poorly programmed, it should maintain the voice connection as that's over 1x and independent of LTE.

It's most likely the same problem that Pantech UML290 users are experiencing when dropping from 4G to 3G, and both devices are using the exact same Qualcomm MDM9600 chip. If you look at the Engineering Mode when the drop from 4G happens, your phone doesn't just fall back to 3G, but it actually lose the connectivity for a few seconds and then "redials" back into the data connection.
I hope they fix this real soon.
When you lose 4g, the data tries to resume on 3g, and since no 3g and calls at the some time, you get data on 3g and dropped call

That's incorrect.
you have to have CDMA service for a voice call. EVDO alone will not allow a voice call, LTE alone will not allow a voice call. you should be able to lose 3g and keep your call going, and you should be able to lose 4g and keep your call going.
Maybe that's their way of preventing talking while driving. lol.

So your saying I can make a call, and have 3g? Cause what I described happens on my phone. It resumes data, and kicks my call.

You should be able to use data and voice at the same time on 3G.
It happens because both radios power down to meet SAR requirements. Two radios at full power = too much radiation

I don't see how that can be true. What does Verizon say?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
SVDO uses two transmitters simultaneously for voice+data over 3g. EVO has been using 4g+voice over CDMA for a long time.
look at the last couple pages of this document
http://www.qualcomm.com/common/documents/articles/1X_Advanced_Benefits_050509.pdf
I don't know if simultaneous voice+data over 3g is only available where verizon has 1x advanced or not. since SVDO only requires the handset to have the capability, it would make sense that it could use regular 1x and evdo simultaneously but it would use more spectrum.

It is true.
Verizon says it is a limitation of their network system and that dropped calls will indeed happen when you leave a 4G zone. They have intentionally designed their network not to fall back onto CDMA when 4G is lost, and they hope their customers will be patient while they expand their 4G coverage - which is occurring at a very fast clip. See the following bit from CTIA this week:
However, Verizon has taken the view that it will minimize annoyances for users handing off between LTE and CDMA, because its LTE coverage will be so wide so quickly. For this reason, it is not bothering to invest in systems to support fallback to CDMA for voice calls when a customer moves out of an LTE zone. Although the call will break in this situation, it will be a rare occurrence, insists the cellco. CTO David Small reiterated the point at CTIA, saying: "At the velocity at which we are pushing LTE markets, this becomes a non issue."
From... http://www.rethink-wireless.com/2011/03/23/verizon-att-cross-swords-4g-plans.htm
But LTE is not handling voice on thunderbolt.

Okay, here is my problem: Every once in a while I will completely lose all signal on my phone. It wont pick up 2G, 4G, nothing. Wifi and bluetooth both seem to work though just fine. I've searched and haven't found anyone with the same issues so I'm wondering if it's just my phone or if nobody has commented on it. I first noticed this about two weeks ago, when my phone refused to find service. I was stuck with the little X next to the signal meter. I figured I was just in an area with poor service and didn't think much of it. An hour later, still, no service. This time I went outside where I know I have good 4G service and nothing for 5 minutes. I enabled airplane mode and disabled it, still nothing. Turned the phone off and back on as a last resort. Still nothing. I ended up finishing the day with wifi calling as that still worked. Sometime later my phone began receiving service again so I thought it was a fluke issue.
Then, just yesterday the same thing happened. This was when I rebooted my phone (which bypasses the fastboot feature) and service was restored right away. I called T-mobile and they said there weren't any network issues in my area and they had never heard of this issue before on the Amaze.
So, this is where I'm asking if anyone has heard of this before. I'm running a stock ROM and it hasn't been rooted. Thanks for any comments!
This might help just a touch. I do live in an area with decent service but my couch and bedroom are deadzones for some odd reason. I bought these signal boosters for 2 bucks figuring "what the hell, I'll give it a shot". No more dead zones, and data went from E to G. Not a miracle worker but for a couple bucks it keeps a signal at least.

Wireless Coverage
I have 2 brand new Amaze 4G for a few months now and had no problem with the coverage. I know the coverage is good with full signal bars and have not found any issue with coverage.
Sometimes, different phones have different received signal sensitivity. Also depends on user behavior. If you are always using a handsfree device (cable or BT) and your phone is in a bag, then your coverage is reduced by your action. The best coverage you can ever get is when you have line of sight (unobstructed) to the cell towers.
There are a few issues with your problem:
1-Poor inbuilding coverage
2-Poor coverage in your area
3-Network optimization issue
4-Hardware issue
If you are going from 1 bar to no bar, then most likely you have coverage issue. You lost signal since the level is already very low.
If you are going from full bar to no bar, you might have hardware or network optimization issue. Try your phone is the city or area with known good coverage first. If the behavior persists, then you have phone problem.
I used to manage wireless network for carriers.
same issue
I've had the exact same thing happen to me. Red x, no signal except wifi, in places where signal is not normally an issue. Battery pull doesn't work, return to signal seems arbitrary. Had the same thing happen with my Desire. I have no answers, but you are not alone.
Yup, it happened with my first Amaze. I got it back in January and started playing with it - rooting, custom ROMs, etc. Then later that day, the signal just died on me. I thought I must've screwed something up, so I flashed back to everything stock. No luck. I waited for half a day, then it randomly started working again at night.
You probably noticed tha tI said that happened with my first amaze. That's because after that signal issue, I discovered that my camera stopped working. I returned it to T-Mobile and they sent me another one. This one is working great though.
Well thank you for all the input so far. Id like to say that this isn't my first cell phone and I'm not new to weak or poor signal areas, especially from T-mobile. I was using my phone at work at the time, which has anywhere from no signal to 3 bars depending on where you are. This wasn't one of the cases that I was standing in a dead zone when I checked my phone. I had no signal for several hours, including over 30 minutes of standing outside trying everything I could think of. I have had excellent signal outside in the past, exactly where I was "Hiding". I got the Amaze because I was tired of playing with my old HD2 and having to work around bugs and possibly not receiving calls. So far, I'm not happy that the radio seems to quit responding all together and leaves me without a phone (minus the wifi calling but I'm not always around a hotspot).
I also experienced a dramatic signal loss at home, going from full signal strength to maybe one bar right around the time that I first had issues. I don't know if this is related or if this is a completely different thing.
I am 99% sure this is an error with the phone - probably software related with the radio driver(s) or radio firmware. I guess I will try taking it back to T-mobile and seeing if they could exchange it for a new one. I was just really wanting to avoid that as I finally got my phone setup how I like it. Again, Thank you for the input and let me know if you are having the same problem or if you know of a solution.
I am on my third Amaze and also tried a Galaxy SII X due to the same problem at my home. Even the Samsung did the same thing. In my house and especially in the driveway, the signal varies wildly between -85dbm to as low as -111dbm. The frustrating thing is once it loses the signal, it doesn't seem to reacquire it without a reboot.
I'm with Telus, and they said they will check on it, but I'm not holding my breath. In my immediate area, outside my house, the signal isn't great, but it will usually hang on. I have been to different cities, and all has been well with it. Coming from a rock steady 2G Touch Pro II, I am disappointed as well..
I am new here to this site, but I am having a similar problem with my Amaze. At work I always have a weak 4G signal, but the last few days it has been gone altogether. I have full phone service (4 bars) but no data. The 4G indicates I have signal, but I can't connect to anything on the web. I called HTC and they had me pull my battery and sim card so they could send a "reset signal" to my phone. After my phone came back up I had faster service than ever, but it only lasted a few minutes and went away again. I am thinking this is a phone issue. Oh, the Amaze is my first Android. My only previous smartphone was my Nokia E71x.
I know if I have WiFi calling selected, an x will show up on my signal if i turn WiFi on. I've personally only had slow data in the area I work. I blame it on the fact that it is a busy corporate park with lots of hotels, cuz my signal is fine elsewhere. Try calling tmobile and seeing if they have known tower issues in your area. I know I had that problem with sprint and they sent me a free airave. Maybe tmobile could do something similar if its.a known problem.

It's most likely a network issue. I get the same thing, it will timeout/refresh the network where it will not get a signal for about 30 seconds a few times per day. I blame the network, since the same thing happened to me with my mt4g

Thank you! This fixed it for me. It was happening only today while I had WiFi enabled, it would turn the mobile radio off completely and the box would be grayed out so I was unable to turn it back on. I had my sim updated today to enable wifi calling so after I read your post, I turned the wifi calling off and the mobile radio signal came back immediately. Strange bug.

I was told It's by design. It saved battery life by not constantly searching for a mobile network it won't use (due to wifi calling). It's not like you can hand off the call to the local network. I do notice that if i start walking outside, once my wifi hits a low signal it logs back on the network.

There is actually an option to specify how the WIFI calling works: either all the time or only when cellular signal is gone. Sounds like you have it set to be on all the time. This means that if you have a good WIFI connection, the cellular radio is shut off and all traffic goes through the WIFI calling app. The other option (which I use) only uses wifi calling when there is no cellular signal.
I have lost cellular signal 3 additional times since my last post. Its not just that I'm in a bad spot and I have no signal for 30 seconds. This goes on for 30 minutes or more - up to several hours. I have found that rebooting the phone fixes it as I believe it completely (as much as possible) removes power from the radio and requires it to be completely re-initiated during the reboot. Simply shutting it off doesn't work as the quickboot is enabled and most likely doesn't perform a complete re-initialization of the radio. My only guess at this point is that there is some kind of possible leftover code from development which never was removed from the radio (this happens more times than not). It could be a timeout or simply causing the radio to hang because of 1. excessive heat generation, 2. excessive power drain, 3. buffer overflow, 4. excessive RF transmit power... In any case, one of those issues could trigger an event in the radio to cause it to simply stop responding.
I am in the process of trying to get T-Mobile to get me a new phone as I am outside of the 30-day window. I have also confirmed it with them that this was not a tower issue.
Thanks

Ok, back on topic now, if it's only dropping when you go in your room, then I don't think it's anything wrong with the phone. Not sure who your provider is, but u may be able to call them and have them look up your address and tell you what kind of signal u should get outside your house, and what to expect inside your house. Well your situation is a little different than other peoples in this thread if u can't connect al all. Ok wait so first off, it won't connect to a network at all? AND you only paid 50 bucks for it...? Sounds a little fishy to me bud, why did he say he was selling it...?
Next thing, I don't know why a t-mo rep would tell you to root the phone, rooting has no effect on your signal strength or your ability to connect to a network.
And lastly, is the phone a T-Mobile branded amaze owhat carrierr...? and will it not connect at all, period, or can u make calls just not data...?

My phone - I have ICS - S-OFF Amaze with Energy ROM and I had tried to apply blas0id tweaks.
The problem - In certain areas I don't have phone signal for a few minutes, then suddenly it will show 4 bars for a few minutes. In general the signal seems fickle.
Before ICS upgrade, when I had GB, I always had 4 bars in the same places. I *think* I had good signal with ICS before I did blat0id tweaks, but I am not certain of that. (ICS and the tweaks were within a few days)
My wife's Iphone still has excellent signal in those places. Tmobile Mytouch also has excellent signal in the same places. So something has changed on my amaze and not the cell towers.
What I have done so far -
1. went back to stock ICS by flashing the img file. That did not improve the signal. So then got back to energy
2. Tried another ROM - speedrom. No improvement in signal
3. Tried few apps like fresh network. They did not help
Please help me
What can/should I do? I love my amaze, but if I dont get consistent signal, I will have to replace it
Are there any tweaks that I can try?
How about the custom kernels that have been made for ICS recently, would those help?
Is there a way to increase the power to look for and catch on better signal? I can trade battery life for better signal
Thanks
I have same issue but with WiFi only. I never had GB I hope there is a work around

Found a workaround
This was dumb luck, but when I was trying to play around the app opensignal, it wanted me to set 2G for some of its functionality, since that functionality does not work over 3g. So I went to setup and set Network mode to "GSM Only" from "GSM/WCDMA Auto"
And walla! right after that my signal jumped from 1 bar to 4 bars and has stayed there. I went back to WCDMA and signal dropped, so now I change the network mode only when I need 4G. Its a pain, but at least, the signal is good when I need it.
So with that information, can someone help how I can tweak something to get my 4G and also good signal?
Thanks

yup, that's what this setting is supposed to do, but it increased the quality of my phone signal, that is what I am trying to make better/consistent. A new sim card is a good idea.. so is removing the back cover and cleaning off the contacts with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. Taking something and SLIGHTLY bending out each of the gold contacts so they make better contact with the case, making sure there is no debris.
Another thing to look into- there is a TON of hacks for cellphone signal that can be done in build.prop.. playing with those settings is probably a good idea.
The last idea- the signal is actually NOT different. The number of bars it shows you is now just more ACCURATE. You still lose signal in ONLY the exact places you would have before.. but now when your phone would show you as having 1 or 2 bars(on gingerbread) right before you lose all signal, on ICS it shows you as having NO bars because you truly have almost lost the signal. It is VERY accurate, now that I am in an area with bad signal.. I have actually flashed gingerbread again and things did NOT get better, there was just fewer bars that weren't as accurate. But I lost signal in the same spots, and would lost 4g in the same exact spots..

Guys, OP here. This question/workaround is not about getting 4G. I am getting 4G just fine. Its about the phone signal (the bars). My amaze does not get good phone signal in some areas and when I set the network mode to GSM only (2G), phone signal strength and stability increases. and now I want to figure out how I can keep the setting to 4G and get a good phone signal

Hi SBD, thanks for coming in. I will look into build.prop (ro.ril properties I think) I will also clean any dust inside the phone, may be that will help. The sim card was new when I got my amaze .. but no harm in trying. So I will ask for a new sim card too.
However, in my case, I have a different experience. This is what I did in a weak signal spot.
Have 4G on. I get 0 signal. Can't make a call
go to 2G at the same spot, I get 2-3 bars. I can make a call
I used opensignal app to check signal strength in both cases. with 4G it showed 0. With 2G it showed 42%
Another test. On my route to drop kids off for their day camp, I was on a call (with 4G on) and dropped the call twice (bad reception areas) while going. I switched it to 2G and while coming back did not drop the call.
Before I found this workaround .. people called me and complained that it directly went to voicemail and I never got the call. (no signal). Since I found the workaround, I haven't heard that from anyone.
So I am convinced that there are some real issues in catching the signal with 4G on that get resolved in "2G only" mode. (may be it has to do with the kind of cell towers we have in our area and nothing to do with the phone)
will update if I find more

Hi SBD, thanks for coming in. I will look into build.prop (ro.ril properties I think) I will also clean any dust inside the phone, may be that will help.

Yea, it should be lines that have ro.ril that youd eant to change.. and fortunately one of those that you can add(it isn't included by default) will do exactly what you need, default to 2g signal when 4g is too weak. I actually need the same thing, in Jacksonville we have great signal.. except in this new place I moved into. It drains my battery by trying to stay with 4g.. but I don't have time before work to find it.
Look for a tthread by "master&slave" titled something like "super build.prop tweaks" in the vibrant forums, I THINK they had that line.. otherwise google around for something like "build.prop signal tweak" as if it isisn't in that thread, there's a really good one on some other forum.
Also, I remember there being some app that requires root that allows you to toggle between GSM preferred and 2g only.. it changes it at system level, and I don't think it was on the play store, I think it was on Xda.
But yea, I understand your dilemma, and until we get an alternative radio to flash(which I don't forsee), that is the kind of workarounds you need. If you find a reasonable solution make sure to post as it will help me too!

I will try to figure out what these different ril properties control and which one to modify .. will report after my experimentation. I haven't found a good comprehensive explanation of all those properties yet.
Glad I'm not the only one...

I have had this problem ever since I got my phone in October (right after launch). Updating to ICS didn't help. i've been planning to root and try another ROM, but so far have been skittish as this is my only phone. hasoon, you say it's the SIM card? I am trying the switch to GSM only to see if it makes a difference. My problem is at home - I have terrible service and I live on a mountain with cell phone towers everywhere. My daughter's AT&T and my old AT&T Nokia E71x had excellent service there. I'll let you know if this helps. Maybe a trip to my local t-Mobile store is in order.
It's not the sim card. I noticed on google a lot of people have this problem with htc phones. It's just a bad radio.

We know. If you wanna help read my post number 16 or try some of the links he posted in 17.. we just need a decent workaround.
Hey guys I have a question. I live in a area where there is FAIR 4g coverage. Mostly 3G coverage. Hardly a place I cant get any cell service. Now my Verizon S4 a lot of the time will want to switch over to 1X speeds... very annoying. I dont believe its a phone or ROM issue cause I have had the Droid Charge and the Galaxy SIII and they both done it. Now my question is.. on the S4 is there any way to permantly disable the 1X only? basically I want 3G or 4G only and if i cant get either of those I would rather have no service. 1X seems to make my phones freak out about internet stuff. Like sometimes IMs wont come through and the phone constanty retrys sending the IM... ect.. wasting battery. Anyway to just turn that off? Thanks!

So, I've been tweaking this, playing with PRL's and working with some of the RF engineers I know at Samsung and Sprint, but I wanted to see if anyone else is having problems like this.
1- You have solid signal strength, but continuously drop calls 5-10 seconds after connecting.
2- Your signal strength and data connection type fluctuates rapidly while stationary. (LTE to 3G or no data connection at all, often times with bars going to zero before immediately changing technology type)
3- Showing good signal strength until you push send on a call, then bars drop to zero, call fails, then you show good signal again.
I never had great signal at my house, but at least I had 1 bar and could make and receive calls. Since I got the Note 3, my signal strength looks great, but issue #1 from above happens 100% of the time. My wife's iPhone 5 and daughters LG Optimus do not have this problem.

My coverage actually improved when I got the note 3

I was having the same issue of 5-10 second drop calls. Exchanged phones and same issue still so returning the phone altother to sprint until the fix the issue. The tech at the sprint store told me Sprint and Samsung looking at ways to resolve the issue, but I have no patience for a phone that can't make phone calls... Going back to my SGS2.
I have yet to get a LTE signal on this, my third Note 3. I'm at places that I know for a fact have LTE but this piece of crap won't pick it up. This phone has me so aggravated already.

Do you have the sim card in there activated? LTE operates over the SIM card, I removed my sim card for testing and it would not pick up any LTE signal whatsoever. Also make sure your account has LTE activated as well.
I am having the same issue with my 3G signal also, I even got a unable to connect to data network message very strange and I can't update my prl the normal way just flash them, i called sprint technical support and they told me to switch between cdma\lte to cdma only and keep it like that for a few minutes then switch back.

had the same issue the first 3 days that I got the phone...has improved a lot on the last 4 days....after multiple restarts and PRL updates
Sprint had sent me an Airave device, so I'm going to test with that over my home internet as backhaul. If it works fine, the network is the issue. If the same things still happens, it's the phone that's the problem. I suspect network, but I'll keep everyone updated.

I had three Note 3's. All had the same voice signal issues.
I bought the first phone on the day of release. When I got home, I noticed that on a connected call, the voice I heard popped and had varying signal distortions. I returned it on the 5th, and repurchased another.
Same problem. It's only during a connected call, not when listening to music, video or recorded voice. Thus, I posted a meagre on the Sprint community forum regarding voice popping, distortions and morphing.
Sprint Note 3 people nation wide began stating they also had the problem. My third Note 3 also had the problem. I returned the phone until the problem is fixed.
I did get 4GLTE briefly in one location, but for the most part, I get 3G only. I did notice that the DATA signal/antenna is slightly better than the Note 2, which is the phone I've reverted back to.
Sprint has been active in that message thread, stating they are working closely with Samsung for a fix. Some have posted that they've received a call from Sprint informing them that an update is due out the week of the 28th. Sprint Technical support confirmed an update is coming out but wouldn't commit to a timeframe.
The voice signal issues are not present during two conditions: roaming, and VOIP calling.
Take care
John
You are correct on the device update. I worked with some engineers at sprint and Samsung and an updated build is being pushed out now in waves that is to correct call audio, blue tooth audio and dropped calls, along with minor system tweaks to correct random reboots that have been reported.
If you're rooted or have modified recovery that tripped the counter, you will need to either return to stock for the OTA or wait for a dev to make a flashable version.

I am on MJ4 now and the voice quality is a lot better now but I'm still getting dropped call though. I also got a message from sprint a few days ago that they are working on towers i my area. I noticed if i go to a different side of the city, that i don't get these dropped calls at all. It is definitely sprints/vision upgrades that are messing up all the phone calls. Some towers are old technology and some are new so they can't communicate with each other from what i have observed.

Dropping calls like crazy
Just throwing in my observation:
I am also experiencing dropped call issues with my Sprint Note 3. I was on baseband MI5 and I just upgraded to MJ4 today. The issue is still there and calls drop sometimes 5 seconds in (while ringing) other times it will happen 2-3 mins into a call. I am lucky if I can hold a call for 5 minutes.
