It's a zip file so you have to flash it from recovery... A custom recovery like cwm or twrp or philz recovery
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

Considering you have installed a custom recovery such as twrp or cwm. Just get into recovery mode and flash the zip file (as it is) after backing up your data and fully wiping the device. And don't forget to backup the EFI partition, that's very important.

or better yet - don't touch it before you read the guides, it looks like you have no clue what you're doing, you'll end up with a paperweight in no time. hit those FAQs

Completely agree. Read the guides and faqs. Don't flash anything until you understand everything

[Q] Step by Step guide on how to Flash a new Rom using CWM.

Hi All
I am new to flashing roms, I am having a huge difficulty with flashing roms through CWM, every time I have done so it has always left me in an end boot screen loop.
Can anyone please help, maybe give me a fools guide on how to flash a rom using CWM as I feel like a fool after trying it 7 times and still not getting it.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 - I have flashed Lite-ning rom 2.2 using Odin
Help
What are you trying to flash? What rom?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Usual instructions are to have a rooted phone with CWM 4 or later on your phone .
Download roms zip and copy to phones SD card .
Power off boot into recovery and >> choose zip from SD card select install wait to finish booting done .
But all roms have differing instructions that you must follow to the letter .
So why are you using CWM to flash a rom that has no instructions to do anything other than flash with Odin .
Instructions are at the very beginning of Lightning 2.2 post and are easy to follow with pictures .

CWM tar ???? post a link to it please this rom you cannot flash . Not the rom the instruction for the rom is what i require .

Looping can be caused by not wiping the caches in recovery or cwm.

To use cwm you need to download rom manager and use it to download and inststall cwm or download cwm to your sd card as a zip, it will be called 'update.zip' . Use recovery to install 'update.zip'.
If it comes back as unable to verify zip, then you are not rooted. You may also have to install 'update.zip' twice from recovery!
You must format system and caches then find, via cwm, your rom and install. I am using Designgears Cognition 1.13. There are updates to this but they are beta. 1.13 has no glitches. Remember to download this rom to your sd card before you use cwm. I think this may be a good starting rom for you. It is one of the few roms at the forefront of Linux and Samsung technology. If you try for anything more you may end-up designing the roms or getting confused! Other roms are miui, darkys, insanity and others which you may want to look at.
Please be careful with what roms you can download, there are many old ones and you need to have a rom which had the correct crc or area that you use you phone. Cognition has multi-crc's. Also, a problem can occur if you use Odin because you are using 2 hardwares, pc and pda. I once downloaded a bad rom and used Odin to flash and it terminated the flash halfway through. End of phone unless I use the usb plug and resistors to cross wire and get it into download mode.
Hope this helps.

To use cwm you need to download rom manager
You dont need rom manager to use or install CWM .I and many others have installed multiple roms just using a CWM and root flash .
I believe the OP is flashing a non CWM file and that's his problem or not following the roms instructions probably to wipe as you said ..
But he is not replying to his answers .
jje
No offence meant to the OP but it's scary the amount of people who cannot follow clearly laid out instructions from intratech, codeworkx etc.
No harm in double checking though BUT if you are not sure about how do to it then DO NOT FLASH!
In simple terms
.tar flash with odin by clicking PDA only
.zip reboot into recovery mode (CWM) and install from zip and select file
As another poster said it's always wise to factory reset and wipe cache including dalvik if going from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 BEFORE flashing the zip file.
Feel free to correct me

Buddy i already told that 7zip just puts in tar format but do not convert the files in the tar components(Mdem, etc)
You might explain what you are trying to achieve by putting a zip into a tar .
Are you trying to make a CWM zip file flash-able via Odin .
jje
Can it be done ?
Lol, that sounds cool. Anyway, I think I'll keep flashing tars with odin and zips with CWM because what you sugest scares the **** out of me. Anyway I'll keep reading this thread out of curiosity.
so your trying to make an update.zip file into an odin.tar file to flash in pda?
I think he ment if you download (for example) new clockwork recovery version in zip format (ment for flashing thru phone recovery) can it be transformed into .tar (ment for flashing thru odin) !
I would also like to know this.

Tar To Zip
I dont know why you are trying to flash a zip via odin by converting it CWM works just fine if u have the latest kernel. I did find some old cwm kernels were not seeing zip files on my sd card make sure you have the latest. From here K13 or k14 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 bottom of the page worked for me.
im curious about this, ever since i rooted and flashed my kernel, i cant properly install ANY CWM roms. on aborts drring verification. I was consierding repacking the ZIP and flashing with ODIN.... just annoying i cant flash any of my roms
Thats usual if CWM is 3e not 4e .
jje
I would also like to know if its possible to repack cwm .zip file into ODIN .tar?? Why? I dont want to have root. I tried with yaffey-v0.2 but for now, no luck.
Only problem is to make a working system.img. Tar package can be done with commands in cygwin or in Samsung tool kit...
Help anybody??

You are in the S2 Forum here. Which version of odin and which FW are you trying to flash? Whats the error message you get?
Yes it can be done and it's pretty easy to do. Google is you're friend. I've converted devil recovery and also modems and all work fine with odin.

[Q] Flashing ROM/Kernel via Creepy's Guide

OK I have read creepy's guide and several other ones and downloaded all the files.
So far the steps that I understand:
1. Recovery Wipe
2. Download Mobile Odin on your phone
3. Use Mobile Odin to flash custom kernel by selecting zImage file. (Apparently I need to use a gingerbread Kernel even though I am going to ICS? this I also don't really understand)
4. He says you can use Mobile Odin to flash a ROM but never explains how. The way I did this before is by loading a .tar file into the PDA section of ODIN on PC and then just clicking start while my phone is in download mode. I looked into Mobile Odin and found no option saying ROM or PDA. My options are Kernel, System, Data, Cache, Param, Modem, or Hidden. So where do I load the .zip/.tar file?
Help would be very appreciated thank you.
You can not use GB kernel on ICS rom. To flash kernel you should put zImage to kernel section on mobile odin and push flash firmware.
To flash rom via mobile odin you should put tar or md5 rom file to system section of mobile odin. Push flash firmware.

if the zImage file is inside of the .tar file does that mean flashing the ROM will automatically flash the kernel as well?
Also creepy specifically states to use a gingerbread kernel, "You must use a Gingerbread kernel when using this method. If you use an ICS kernel while your phone is running Gingerbread, it will not boot!!!"

If tar or md5 file have zImage, mobile odin will leave old kernel.
If you want to flash ICS rom You should put tar or md5 file of rom in system and ICS kernel of this rom in kernel.
f you want to flash GB rom You should put tar or md5 file of rom in system and GB kernel of this rom in kernel.
Creepy states don't mix GB kernel with ICS rom and v.v.
If rom file have inside hidden, modem, zImage, system (factoryfs), cache. You can on mobil odin push "open file or archive .tar, .tar.md5, .exe, and separate file" and choose rom tar or md5 file. Mobile odin will put all file in right plase.

Apparently these are all .zip files? How am I suppose to do this using .zip files?
This is the ROM I am trying to flash:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650948
The .zip file has only 5 files inside of it when extracted, cache.img, factoryfs.img, hidden.img, modem.bin, and zImage with no specified file extension.
When you said it will "leave the old kernel" do you mean it will leave it in place, or leave it to the new kernel inside of the .tar file?
So should I extract the .zip file use the zImage as my kernel and load the whole .tar file under system?
Or do I need to use a different kernel like fluxxi?
EDIT: I was also curious about this ROM, would it be difficult to install? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752232

First rom you should open with "open file" and mobile odin will put all him self. And you can flash. Kernel and modem will be changed to rom kernel and modem.
Second rom is not difficult but you should flash with cwm recovery.

Sorry I gave you the wrong link for the first ROM, I have like 20 tabs open trying to figure this out.
this is the one I meant: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746181
and it is a .tar file
Also for the second link, I'm guessing CWM is Clockwork Mod? is this a mobile software or PC based? I googled it and went to their main website and found no download link for anything similar to ODIN. I also searched for cwm recovery in play store and found an app called rom manager, is this it?
Thanks a bunch for your help, I really do appreciate this

It's same. put in "open file".
After installing rom you can change kernel via mobile odin.
After installing you will have a root and it' very easy.
You can change kernel to siyah kernel nomswap http://www.mediafire.com/?81odsaa6o6ib165. Take from zip file zImage and install via mobile odin. After you will have root and cwm recovery.
But it is for I777 based stock rom. For other rom you should install siyah mswap http://www.mediafire.com/?vihwj8l5wv8v263

Ok great I know have all the files selected in mobile odin. I wanna go over this with you one more time before i begin the flash to make sure I made no mistakes.
1. I did not do a factory reset because I am still on gingerbread(rooted) is this ok?
2. I used "open file" as you said and it placed all the proper files in the right location.
3. There are two options that I'm not sure what they do, "wipe data and cache" and "Wipe Dalvik cache" Should I check both of these?
As soon as you tell me I'm fine ill start the flash! thanks again!
I impatiently started the flash I hope i didnt mess anything up

It ensures that there are no "left behinds" from prior ROMs or kernels that could (and often do) conflict with the new firmware you're flashing. Many of the problems that people tend to blame on ROMs or kernels are actually often resolved when they go back and wipe fully before the install. May as well get it out of the way in the first place instead of ending up pulling your hair out (or frustrating the dev enough to do the same) because it wasn't done with a clean slate.

That has the Odin flashable cwm touch file... that version is outdated so after flashing that, you'll have cwm, but flashing a newer Rom zip might end up with a "status 7 error" in recovery.
At that point I'd personally use goo manager go grab the latest version of a cwm zip, that'll be usable in the version of cwm I posted above.

Are you saying I should _not_ use TWRP to put CWM on?
No, it should work, just saying if it still gives you the proverbial finger, Odin is your friend and that version is just the latest with an Odin .tar
So to have your cake (cwm) and eat it too (flash new roms) you'll need to update your recovery from that older version of cwm
So you said you get an error when you tap to install? You should be flashing that zip in recovery like you would a ROM or mod. Is that what you did? After it installs just reboot recovery within twrp and bam!!! You'll have cwm.
Thanks so much for your help...my problem remains, so I may go back to a stock ROM for T-Mobile, since that is my provider, and see if I can solve it... Before I installed CWM, I could sms/mms to my e-mail address...I can't any longer.

ROM for Odin of PH1 update

This is the Odin flashables for the PH1 update retrieved from Kies3. I find it different that the ROM is in four files, and I don't know how to combine them. You will actually need to select all four check boxes in Odin 3.11 or newer, and select the correct files based on their prefixes. Thank you for this, if I'm wanting to keep my custom recovery and be rooted would I just select the BL, CP, and CSC then flash the stock rooted in TWRP? And can I load all 3 in Odin at once or is there an order I should flash in? I remember when I flashed to OK2 I had to do a specific order and pull the battery in between, wasn't sure if that's still the case. Thanks in advance.
I honestly don't know about the custom recovery using the Odin flash. You could try it, but you'd have to reinstall your SU binaries. These files will not work in TWRP. As for loading the files in Odin, yes, you load all of them at the same time. I would recommend trying the prerooted ROM I posted first.
