The phone part of my gs2 has stopped working without notice during standby ;
Sim cards are not recognized, the baseband is listed as "unknown", so are imei and everything associated with phone and data.
Wifi works, like everything else, it works like normal except for phone and data.
I was on cognition 1.31, I tried to restore a previous working nandroid backup, but with no success ; So I tried to flash separately various modems via Odin , but with no success either...
If I put the phone in offline mode it stays that way handgun it's impossible to disable it.
What can I try next before taking it to service?

Restore your backed up EFS folder as it looks looks wrong/no IMEI .
Service will require no root no custom rom and rom counter at zero for warranty .

I tried that too, copying he efs folder that I copied on the external memory with root explorer, it's the right procedure?
I have the USB jig, so I have no problems restoring it to stock-like conditions.

Obviously is not stolen, I bought it from a local reseller in June, sealed and with my provider's sim/documentation ,it worked like a charm until now..
But how can this matter? Should I contact my network provider?

I have the same problem. The phone is not stolen I went to the shop and I called the provider to check if the IMEI is not in stolen or lost blacklist but it is not.
I went to carphone warehouse and of course they also straight away told me that it is probably stolen but later that backed from that idea and they do not know what to do with the phone they advised to send it to Samsung.
I wonder why the idea that the phone is stolen,
It has no IMEI no baseband . Stolen phone would have baseband and IMEI may be changed but some. Stolen IMEIs are in database and phones with this IMEI cannot use the network (also I know that the changing IMEI is not legal but easy to do) but ours are not. So why the idea that it is stolen?
Anyhow.
Is your EFS folder Read Only as mine and you can not change there anything?
I wonder if there is anyway to be able to completely remove EFS partition and create it again.
This is only Linux and I bet that there is the way.
I got myself second handheld directly from provider and now I am looking dor the way to clone the partition but no success.
Well if you've got all the documents and receipts then I would certainly take it back!
Same advice but still we do not know why it happends to so many SGS2? is it hardware or software error?
As i have 2 same phones i thing that the content of my EFS folder is not corrupted and i will do the test and copy it from the brokrn one to the working one and see if IMEI will change to the one fron the broken one? i think it will anf i know that i can not di this other way around because it is RO. Si if it will work that means it is the hardware

Your Baseband processor is dead, thats the only reason "Unknown" will be displayed, if it was because your EFS was corrupted you would have the U1 default IMEI displayed.
Service is your ONLY option.
Yes thay is what is happened i wonder how much it cost to fix the Baseband processor?
Finally a definitive answer, as soon as I come back home I'll take it to service, hoping that it won't take too long, this is the worst period for service, everything is closed due vacations ...

You should have warranty, since the phone is too young for the warranty period to be over, and it's not some kind of damage that's related to you, but it's their fault.

I've got exactly the same problem. I bought mine from Phones4u when it came out in late april, but i'm now in Hong Kong on a short term contract, and my phone is lost its IMEI and baseband after the battery died.
I took it to Samsung HK service centre and not suprisingly its not covered by warranty in HK as its a UK phone, but they will repair it for about £150, they said they need to replace the whole board, and takes a month to get in.
I rang Samsung UK service centre, and they told me to send it in to the UK for repairs.
Its really shocking that running out of battery can corrupt the phone like this, and how on earth can mobile phones not be covered under international warranty? a mobile phone is mobile right?
Now i having to use my old iphone with all my data such as sms and chat history gone.
So I've flashed my phones a couple of times without backing up the EFS folder (a mistake I will not make again) and my question now is if the warranty covers an IMEI number change that occured when I flashed it.
I have not rooted the phone and have also only flashed official firmwares (some leaks) but not custom Roms.
IMEI number: 00499901064000
You normally shouldn't post your IMEI number anywhere online, but I'm pretty sure that one is the generic samsung one you get if your efs is corrupt (or sometimes you get no imei at all)
Back to your actual question: I'm not sure if the warranty covers that exactly, but what you can do (assuming you have no signal etc) is claim you were updating your phone via KIES and when it booted you had no signal etc, that's what I did when my aunt's EFS was corrupted during an unlock and Orange swapped it out for a new one.
Try GSII_Repair app from market
If that works than you are lucky
if it doesn't then check the flash counter if its zego or more(if you had rooted before sometime) and take it to Samsung and say happened while updating through kies

Ah man I went to the store and asked about it (because I wasn't able to make calls from my phone) and we just switched out sim cards and it started working again.
But the guy I was talking to was actually about to send it in for repair but we decided to try out the SIM card switch first.
For future reference, warranty will NOT cover the phone if the IMEI has changed/is corrupt. Had this issue exactly as you had, flashed an official Samsung firmware release on the phone (without backing up EFS >.<) and lost the IMEI altogether. Samsung would not cover the phone under warranty regardless of the fact it was un-rooted/official firmware.

Okay, thank you for a clear response
Obviously his imei was not corrupt after all, as changing the Sim fixed the problem. If hazard a guess that either the original Sim had become dislodged, or damaged. Our maybe the guy in the shop factory reset the phone as well as put the Sim in the phone. Either way, the imei in the first post is the original, you should take it down. Otherwise, maybe some clever fellow will use it to make a clone of your phone! :-(

No it's not, it's a generic IMEI that generates when your EFS is corrupted. You will still be able to use the phone using this IMEI number.

That can't be since it doesn't match with the IMEI number that is under the battery (which the shopkeeper explained was my real IMEI number). I think it's a generic one.
The IMEI you posted is the standard wrong IMEI usually due to damaged EFS .
The legal IMEI is the one under the battery .

Yep definitely looks like it's stolen, and even though the phone doesn't show the IMEI the network can still read it and looks like they have blocked it. And this is exactly why I'd never buy expensive phones from eBay.
If you got it from eBay report the seller to eBay and PayPal and demand money back
It's illegal to sell blocked phones because 99% of the time they are stolen or a dodgy insurance job.
The first phone I got from eBay was blocked and I got a full refund when I reported him to eBay because it's illegal to sell stolen phones. Even though the guy had the phone advertised as sold as seen etc no refunds blah blah but it's either they Give the refund or reported to the police and they will get in huge trouble .
Goodluck I hope you do get it refunded

Their is no solution .
No EFS then cannot restore .
Normal route is return unit to the seller as not fit for use .
As XDA does not know the providence of this phone their is no help outside of what you have been given .
No IMEI sale is usually a stolen or blacklisted phone .
Contact the original network .

if you have the box then it should have the imei on it, take it to Samsung service centre and if it hasn't been reported stolen then they can fix it for you, only solution I think
I had this on my old GS2 after flashing a dodgy ROM. It replaces Your IMEI with an american generic code which unfortunately doesnt work. There is an app on Play Store which restores Your efs folder but this didnt work for me so was a repair job with o2 who sent it off to Samsung in the end.
App was called Ktool and another called GSII Repair but obvs that prob wont work on GSIII.
Good luck

I cant help you more than that..
Sorry I am new here,
Device Model: GT-I9300RWXPAP
I realize the question has been asked several times over but I was wondering if I had missed anything and what my options are at this point.
I recently bought a new Galaxy S3 from eBay, the phone was described as having a "problem calling out" but the seller promised everything else works perfectly. The item was sold as "faulty" in eBay. So the phone was sold for around £250.
I followed the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021 (making sure to backup my EFS folder) and found that an original EFS folder was missing a file called ".nv_data" when I looked for it with Root Explorer, however there was a ".nv_data.bak" file. So I tried that file instead and continued with the guide. However the IMEI number is still the generic one (004999010640000/01) after I rebooted it.
Is there any other way I can restore the original IMEI number?
(This isnt a clone)

Then you are going to have to use it as not a phone .
No original backed up EFS No original IMEI .
You cannot recover whats not there and i suspect a phone that is missing the IMEI sticker is more than just faulty .

In order to recover legally you need orignal IMEI number.
But you do not have Phone imei or serial number, I think even samsung service centre cannot recover it.
Sorry m8,but that phones original imei is reported stollen.
Why..
they removed the sticker on the back,so its almost impossible to recover imei except through samsung.they do it with the phone-id.

The item was sold as faulty, so you have little recourse for returning it. You were told what you were buying.
Your only hope is contacting Samsung, who might swap out the main board for you, for a price.

A faulty phone is a working phone with a problem, in this case it had a problem dialing out. This is a display model, so it technically could never dial out, and it wasn't a problem. He should return it and get his money back.

i tried several micro sims but still have same result. I also flashed the official rom from the sky vega website (i have sky vega iron) but still got no luck and my phone still has no signal.
i saw that my IMEI in the back of the battery and in the #*06# are different i checked it from an IMEI checking site and the IMEI is from different phone models, at the back it says in the site that the imei in the back is for a870L and at the #*06# it says its for a870S (S is for SK provider in korea, L is for Lte+ provider and L is for Olleh) but both imei is not blocked based on the website result my question is,
is having different IMEI is the reason why my phone cannot register to anynetwork?
whats are my option to fix this problem? (having a money back from the one who sold it is not an option because i already flashed a rom because i think rom is the phones problem)

Don't think there is an known way for phones like that. If it was a MediaTek based phone, then possibly. However, you are incorrect about it being illegal to change the IMEI as OP is trying to restore his own correct IMEI. It'd only be illegal if they were using an IMEI from another phone they didn't own to defraud the carrier of unpaid services. Changing the IMEI to properly reflect the number the phone came with is not illegal in any way, shape, or form.
my phone is not Mediatek sir.
Which is why I said I don't think there is a way for phones like that...
A different IMEI on a battery won't matter.
More likely your problem is your APN settings.

Wrong. Tampering with the imei in any way is illegal in many places. The only people that have the right is the OEM. The laws differ a bit from country to country which is why all talks of changing the IMEI are banned from XDA.

I think it would have to be a ridiculously strict interpretation of that law to include restoring the correct IMEI to be considered "tampering". I'd like to see some citations for that. It's not considered that in the US, at least nor not allowed here - for example:

Once again, restoring the correct IMEI is not tampering. And you are incorrect about banning tools here that can edit the IMEI because MobileUncle has been on the site and in many of the subforums for plenty of time for the mods to remove it if it were an issue. We aren't talking about dealing with any cloning or tampering of the sort. I'm not sure how to make it more clear that restoring the IMEI isn't considered tampering or off-topic here.
What difference does it make if you are restoring from a backup after your IMEI is unknown or 0000000000049 or using an app to do it?
Edit 2: We even have tools to restore the IMEI on some phones if you didn't even make a backup. How is THAT different?

It's unfortunate to hear that considering it shouldn't be that way. I don't get many Mediatek devices at my shop but I have had a customer with a faux S5 that tends to randomly lose it's IMEI and MobileUncle was the only available way to fix it. It's absolutely ridiculous to think that restoring the correct IMEI would be considered tampering or not legal in anyway. I've still yet to find any evidence that that is the case here or otherwise.

It's absolutely ridiculous to think that restoring the correct IMEI would be considered tampering or not legal in anyway. I've still yet to find any evidence that that is the case here or otherwise.

Well let's look at this. As clone devices do not use legal IMEI anyway. It has already been proven that the IMEI on cheap POS knock offs do not use valid IMEI any way so what your doing is against the law under the Fcc ruling. Look up the Fcc ruling on cloned devices. Now if you search well enough you will find the info needed. Mainly as it was a huge deal with Samsung devices that place the IMEI files on a writable partition that can be erased on roms flash.
