[Q] Flashing Rom - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I tried to flash this Rom : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2208126
I Followed the guide :
FROM AOSP
MAKE A NANDROID
wipe data/factory reset in recovery
wipe /system
flash ROM
flash Gapps
reboot
let phone sit for approximately 10 minutes
reboot
enjoy!
I didn't find in the recovery "wipe system" so i skipped this step and flashed rom... The flashing failed ...
Why did it fail??? : (
Write now i have Ics Passion v13 with 3.1.10-ICS Passion Kernel and i really want to find a good rom with good GPS....
Thanks : )

What exactly was the error message you received when trying to flash?

In recovery mode go to mounts and storage then format system.

Curious as to your error message, failure to "wipe system" usually shows after, with fc's and system shutdowns.

[Q] "Can't mount /dev/block/vold/179:9"

I was attempting to flash clockworkmod and I am now stuck in recovery. Attempting to reboot does nothing, I did a factory reset. Applying update.zip just gives me the error in the title of this thread, plus "can't mount update.zip"
I see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204 as a last option but is there anything else I can do? If I remove my sd card and put a new update.zip on it manually, will this fix the problem?
ok a few things first.
1)which CWM did you install?
2)Which Rom are you trying to install?
if you have the rom on your sd card simply factory rest, wipe cache, and dalvik cash......
then without rebooting flash zip from sdcard [navigate to and flash your rom]
then reboot.
you shouldn't need the apply update zip
if that doesn't work odin a stock image and start all over again

I'm not sure which version, the file only says "cwmrecovery.tar"
I'm trying to install CyanogenMod 7.1
Can you explain a little more regarding wiping cache and dalvik cache, and also how to flash the rom without using any application. I only have access to "reboot system now", "apply sdcard:update.zip", "wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition" as of right now
EDIT: Clockworkmod recovery is not functioning, if that was not clear.
Follow this guide for installing mtd roms such as cm7, aosp, miui...Just replace vgb rom with cm7.

[Q] Stock recovery wipe data vs. CWM recovery wipe data

Hi guys,
A quick question.. I had some issues after installing Batista 0.5 ICS, meaning that in CWM Recovery, when I tried to wipe data/factory reset i got "Error mounting /sdcard/.android_secure". So I flashed stock LPQ, and went back in Recovery, and tried agan the wipe data/factory reset, and it only displayed "Formatting Complete".
Now my question is, does CWM wipe data does something more than stock recovery wipe data?
If not, can you guys help me to stop receiving that error message in CWM?
Thanks alot for your help!
Cheers

NO its the same .
CWM gives additional wipe and format options .
Error message could be wrong /faulty firmware flash or likewise wrong CWM .
Flash rom again .
Basics of CWM are of course in the stickies .

Thanks JJE! I've tried all manner of CWM installs. Even went back to 2.3.6 KL1, so that i could install its respective CF Root kernel (along with an older version of CWM). But still the same issue appears. However, i found a "recovery kernel", that i think could help with my issue, but i'm not sure if i should flash it, since LPQ is 4.0.3 and that kernel says it's 4.0.2 (gt-i9100_clockworkmod-recovery_4.0.0.2.tar).
Is that safe to flash over 4.0.3 LPQ?
Thanks again!
Anyone? Am I alone in my little thread?
Echo, echo, echo...
You should be able to flash a 4.0.2 kernel over 4.0.3 no problems. Obviously backup first (Nandroid backup, Titanium backup, etc, etc). If something weird like the phone not booting happens, you could try flashing the original kernel again & see if you get CWM back & then restore your backup. Or at worst you might need to flash a stock rom in Odin, CFRoot again then restore your backup.
Obviously if you're having problems like that, as JJE suggested it might be a somehow incomplete flash of the rom in the first instance. It might even be worth trying a clean reinstall of the rom. Have you asked in the thread devoted to the rom if other users have had the same problem ?

On which Firmaware are you now?
as you told in your first post "So I flashed stock LPQ, and went back in Recovery, and tried agan the wipe data/factory reset, and it only displayed "Formatting Complete".
that is what actually required to happen " "Formatting Complete". because it will not take more time since it is fresh rom there is nothing to format any user data..
when is your error reappearing?
Thanks Mistah,
I did try Odin installing the stock LPQ and then CF Root > error message. Then I tried Odin installing 2.3.6 KL1 and then CF Root > error message. However, in stock recovery, i didn't get any error message. It says the formatting is complete, so that must mean that it was able to format succesfully. In CWM recovery, however, if i try to wipe data, i get the "Error mounting /sdcard/.android_secure" message. "Skipping format" and so on..
What do you mean by a clean install?
Thanks Zaheed,
The error comes after i flash CF Root (on either LPQ ICS, or KL1 GB), and from CWM recovery i select wipe data/factory reset.
Formatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure...
Error mounting /sdcard/.android_secure!
skipping format...
Data wipe complete.
In Show Log (from CWM Recovery) it says the following:
Formatting /sd-ext
Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure...
I:Formatting unknown device.
W:Failed to mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 (No such file or directory)
Error mounting /sdcard/.android_secure!
Skipping format...
Data wipe complete.
Now I'm on stock LPQ downloaded from sammobile, the Open Europe version.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again for your time, guys!
By 'clean' install I mean format cache, data, system, & sd card then do an Odin install.

I think you dont want to worry about this error, after this wipe are you able to boot into the ROM? were your all apps and user data wiped? then no need to worry...
once again make sure are you selecting the correct matching CF-root for your ROM..
another option : I tried before when I got an error in my CWM was, I downloaded ROM manager (i did not concern to donate the silly bucks to Koush) and flashed the latest touch recovery (note: this will work only with ROM manager, not with CWM Manager)
and selected reboot into CWM from Rom Manager, then it will temporerly flash the touch recovery on your recovery partition, all options in that was working like a charm,
But when you select reboot into from anywhere else, or with Vol-up+Home+power you will be booted into your current custom recovery which was flashed along with the kernel.
regards
When i wipe data/factory reset from stock recovery, the image of Android comes up and that blue interrupted line at the bottom, and yes, the apps and settings are reset. However, in CWM recovery, when i wipe data/factory reset, that image of Android is somehow corrupted, with 3 blue interrupted lines showing up, but no animation. Even so, the apps and settings are reset.
So i'm thinking it has to do with recovery partition.
Anyway, I'll try your suggestion later on, as i'm at work now.
Thanks again, Zaheed! Guys..
Much appreciated!

[Q] error in flashing new rom through recovery

I am trying to flash rom called " ICS Euphoria RC 2.1"
I had ICS Passion, so I tried to wipe first, then flash ICS Euphoria.
However, it failed to flash. So I odin back to stock first, then flash to
Cyanogenmod 7. Now, I am trying to flash ICS Euphoria RC 2.1 again, but it
keep failing. I wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe delvich, format system,
then flash through cwm recovery mode. I get a message " e: can't
open/sdcard/euphoria_rc_2.1.zip (bad) " when i click to install from sdcard.
Please help me out!!
Download the rom again. File might actually be bad.

Probarly you need a custom GB bootloader or the file is corrupted or you need to have it in internal/external sdcard wich ever works(I say that cause it happend to me)

[Q] unlocked bootloader + custom kernel, flash custom rom success.. but stuck

hello..
i've search thru the forum, and my prob is somehow differ than others..
already unlocked bootloader.. apply custom kernel successfully..
step i do to flash rom:
- backup in CWM
- reboot into recovery [power button then repeatedly press volume up]
- [wipe cache partition, advance wipe dalvik cache, battery stat]
- install custom ROM zip from sdcard (with no ERROR reports or problem during flashing)
- reboot into system
still stuck at sony logo.. wait around 1 hour.. nothing happened...
then i remove battery, try to boot into cwm..
success..
but the cwm background pic changed with wording "CWM-based recovery v5.0.2.7 Full (by DooMLoRD)".. not like before.. and i restored back..
the ROM i tried is Pureness build 3 and jjHybrid 3.1.. both give same problem..
check screenshot of my system below.. is there's any problem with my system?
or it is related to odex?
so.. got any idea or possible solution?
or my phone problem itself?
thx in advance...
try other kernel...
1. Pureness build 3 ,Kernel :Night Elfs ICS Kernel mod
2. jjHybrid 3.1,Kernel Use any of Following
a) STOCK Kernel (No OverClocking)
b) shardul_seth Kernel
c) Night-Elf Kernel
d) Adridu kernel

I see that you are not wiping/formatting your data.. Wiping data is essential when installing a custom ROMs or switching ROMs..
Before wiping cache, format your data first!

The data has to be wiped when you install a custom ROM.. Since some of the data can cause troubles to the new ROM you have installed..
I advice you to do the following when installing a ROM.. Follow step by step..
- Flash the kernel first
- Boot into CWM mode by pressing 'volume down'
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- wipe dalvik cache
- install custom zip from sd card i.e your custom ROM zip file
- reboot now
there you go now!
PS. Data formatting has to be done in CWM mode and it will not erase your sd data! So relax!
Also, press 'Thanks' if I helped you!

before this with alliance1.1 and suave6 kernel work with no probs.
must i tell this in every reply?
this is the exact step doing all of this..
flash kernel via fastboot thru command prompt window..

- reboot into recovery [power button then repeatedly press volume up]
- [wipe data/factory reset, cache partition, advance wipe dalvik cache, battery stat]
- install custom ROM zip from sdcard (with no ERROR reports or problem during flashing)

and chill bro. i have problem here, and i ask about it because i dont know what to do.
and fastboot folder must placed in android-sdk folders or it is not necessary?

Are you sure the kernels are compatible with the custom ROM you are using? Usually the developer suggests some ROMs. Also, you might need a different baseband for the kernels you are using. Which ROM are you using? Some have extra steps you have to perform.

Only boot.img has to be placed in android sdk folder.

Sorry I'm not awake today. Boot.img must be in android sdk and only the fastboot.exe file. I doubt it's got anything to do with that though, if you can successfully flash kernels.

what he is trying to say is that you should flash the kernel AFTER you flash your ROM
the ROM you chose is [CM10][Jellybro] i9100 Nightly Kangs, yes?
anyway..
here is what you should do
1. flash your rom
2. flash gapps for cm10
3. flash a kernel [an example of which is Dorimanx Kernel]
if you are still confused on some terms, please refer here
I hope this helps
EDIT:
you should root your phone first
You know, after flashing a new rom booting may take some more time, at least a few minutes. Have you been waiting enough time?
First, check md5sum of ROM [what Saywhatt wrote a few posts back]
a. If you are no longer in recovery modes then you can get a kernel [tar file] Flashing with Odin.
If your phone then starts normally, then flash the ROM you want through CWM.
*** wipe data / wipe cache / wipe Dalvik cache / format system in mounts and storage / flash ROM from sdcard***
b. If you can get into recovery mode, not flash with Odin, but do these same steps;
**** wipe data / wipe cache / wipe Dalvik cache / format system in mounts and storage / flash ROM from sdcard***
PS. If it fails in step a first flash stock ROM with Odin
sorry for my bad english
